Oh boy this is...quite an ask. Especially bc fanfic recs are so personal? What I think is a good fic will be vastly different from other people. I have a really high angst tolerance, so please double check tags with these. Also keep in mind that I mainly read donnie-centric fics.

Firefight by remrose | 94,480 [ON-GOING]

What if donnie gets trapped in the prison dimension with leo? I’m usually not a fan of changing plot points in the rise movie or suicidal leo, but this fic is the exception. It is VERY well written and has some of the best exchanges between the disaster twins. You WILL be scared for the characters and your heart WILL be crushed. Proud to say I was here for this fic since chapter 1 bc that NEVER happens with me

Corrupted Upgrade by Dandy | 25,898 [FINISHED]

Donnie Villain AU with a twist. He really gives off megamind vibes. DO NOT BE FOOLED. THERE’S A REASON EVERYONE IS OUT OF CHARACTER IN THE BEGINNING. I almost slept on this fic and it became one of my favorites. It’s the type of fic that I can read over and over and over.

Turning Purple by Lizardstuff | 48,123 [ON-GOING]

Donnie slowly gets more and more sick post rise movie and the rest of the characters must find out what’s wrong and find a cure. THIS ONE’S FOR YOU, MEDICAL NERDS. Author has done research and any inaccuracies have gone over this EMT’s head. I reread this one every chapter update and every time I’m haunted by “the blueberry french toast paragraph” No I will not explain further, go read it.

MY TOP FIC RECOMMENDATION

Spider's Web with Strings Attached by CurlySwirly | 125,661 [ON-GOING]

Donnie and Leo get kidnapped and are forced to fight in the battle nexus. This is my pick for the most well written fanfic and most in canon characterization with ALL the characters. You will HEAR the characters not just through the dialogue but also through the writing itself. As the reader, you will be beaten down and have your heart crushed mercilessly which makes the pay off the most rewarding, satisfying experience that I've personally ever felt with a fanfic. This fic lives in my head rent free and I think about it at least once a day. It is my all time favorite rise fic and I highly recommend it.

hi, I don't use tumblr often, but i when i do, i always check your account to check if you posted something. LIAB is amazing. i truly have no words. i have read a LOT of fanfics from very different fandoms and i can confidently say that Leaving It All Behind is the best one i have ever read. the world you've built around the main characters is so deep, and realistic. even though benders are not real, it feels like i'm reading about true events. you describe the horrors of war and trauma so well. i'm actually very, very impressed. i happen to be a person that suffers from ptsd and other mental illnesses and and the way you portray traumatized characters is very realistic. i know you always say that the main characters' recovery is unrealistically fast, but don't worry about that. the way you describe zuko and sokka's feelings is perfect. their recovery doesn't seem rushed. it just looks like they're adapting and learning how to deal with it fast (we have to remember that the war is still very much happening and sadly they don't have a lot of time to deal with everything that happened to them). i'm so grateful i found your work. it's truly amazing, i hope you won't give up on writing when you finish the LIAB trilogy. have a good day/night

seriously this was so kind I’m still in shock. I’m so happy you think the healing arc is realistic because I try to balance the stories pace with the characters struggles and emotions (some of them make it DIFFICULT haha) but I’m always worried it doesn’t translate well.

#This is so validating you have no idea ahhhh #I have read so many fics where the chatacter (zuko lol) has gone through extreme trauma or torture and he gets rescued or escapes #& then it’s like after a quick patch up job he is essentially back to normal #Which… no. lol. okay okay okay, i have so many thoughts and they are all a bit jumbled but I NEED TO TALK ABOUT GOOD OMENS.

this season just hit me full force in the chest as someone who was brought up in a christian household and who is still slowly deconstructing.

i felt like i saw two halves of myself in crowley and aziraphale; the current version that is more jaded and disillusioned and the younger version that was so desperately hopeful and believing. crowley has some fond memories of heavenly duties, didn't hate every aspect of being angelic, and still generally believes in helping people, but has seen behind the curtain and has been rejected for it and now he can never see it the same. whereas aziraphale is still hanging on, he's still at the start of figuring it out - he thinks there are just bad apples and can fix it by giving his input.

and maybe he will change a few people's minds, but it is an "institutional problem". the foundation is rotten. he still thinks they are the good guys, and can't see that there never were any.

ugh, there's so much more to say here but i can't figure it out right now. just- mr. gaiman you menace! what have you done to me.

every day I sob over the fact that Lan Wangji probably didn't think he even mattered all that much to Wei Wuxian before the the whole Mo Xuanyu situation. Like, it was one thing watching WWX going through the the whole "villain arc" thing (which he WASN'T but-- for argument's sake here) and doing everything he could to protect WWX.

Like yes, in (I think all, but we'll say) most adaptations, WWX and LWJ confirm to each other that they do both still consider each other zhiji (on the computer again so we get no pinyin or characters, bear with me) but that's all before WWX takes the Wens, before Jin Zixuan's death, confrontation with JC, the literal entire battle and desecration of the Burial Mounds and the Wen family. Oh, and WWX's death... Like, in the live-action adaptation, u can pull a bit of the "oh LWJ can see that WWX does still care about him and tries to save him even when JC appears as a threat" but that original version??? (0_0) bro literally told LWJ to "scram." Like that's a bit harder to rationalize the person you're in love with and have spend the past years bonding with and protecting also still has any affection or respect left for you.

And then he find A-Yuan, raises him and names him, remembers WWX every day for over a decade and welcomes him back with open arms when WWX fully expects the man to kill him on the spot.

kills me when i see two people arguing and one person is like “i am so sick of people lauding things like ‘fanfiction’ and ‘YA’ over real art. cheap entertainment is no replacement for true intellectual stimulation” and the other person is like “well maybe real art isn’t as intellectual as you think it is. people just assume that the classics are good because everyone says so. but in fact, a lot of so called ‘cheap’ literature is more intellectual because—”

intellect doesn’t exist within the pages of a book. intellect exists inside your brain. reading Shakespeare doesn’t magically increase your intellectual ability any more than reading Pokémon fanfiction magically dissolves it. a 13 year old applying critical thinking skills to a Young Adult novel is using more of their intellect than an adult reading Sartre under the passive assumption that it will make them smarter

it’s one thing to attack the thoughtfulness of a specific author—but that’s not the case here, is it? this is an argument over the reader’s intellect. “smart people read this; stupid people read that. if you don’t like what i like, it’s because you just don’t Get It.” give me a break. that’s not an objective analysis, it’s an ego-boost

#what extra kills me if that i often see where the argument is coming from #it’s frustrating to see people dismiss the entire notion of a ‘classic’#it’s amazing to read a passage from hundreds of years ago and think ‘wow. this could’ve been written yesterday’#because so many of our feelings and concerns are ancient ones #on the other hand i love cheesy fanfiction and easy-to-read young adults novels #i love stories that have a low barrier for entry #i love seeing books that were clearly written to make a 14 year old feel a little better about life #i know people who have written MILLIONS of words of fanfiction—for the joy of it #it kills me when people dismiss things that aren’t for them #and it kills me even more when they start doing it at each other #each side both attacking and defending something that can be wonderful #*young adult i’m not re-writing the tags just to fix that u can’t make me #me when i make a post

coming out of my baldurs gate 3 delirium (aka i am working a night shift and can't physically play it. at work.) to say that horikoshi. horikoshi when i GET YOU. you are NOT leaving izuku with no quirk and no arms. i am in your walls

#bnha spoilers #also. more evidence that horikoshi read zero-sum game #like come on the twins thing the izuku losing his quirk thing the losing his arm thing the shiggy getting decay from afo thing #TELL ME THE TRUTH HORIKOSHI. DID YOU READ MY FANFIC.#i'm joking of course. he's just done a really good job of foreshadowing through the series. its a marker of an amazing author #and i know that izuku probably won't lose both his arms and his quirk. i fully expect it to be a happy ending in some way shape or form #this is a sixteen year old boy who sacrificed EVERYTHING. more than he ever had to give #and he had less than a year. LESS THAN A YEAR.#sorry i'm already crying thinking about the scene of him holding shigaraki's hand even though it will decay him........#izuku who knows better than ANYONE what shigaraki's power can do.... reaching out to him. caring more about others than about himself.#he's just. he's so good. he's SO GOOD. he deserves the world #tbh i feel like eri HAS to be involved at this point. she's the deus ex machina in all this #that or overhaul #both of their abilities can at least physically restructure izuku's body #it would actually be a very interesting redemption point for overhaul.......#i mean WHY ELSE RESCUE HIM. and why give him THE SAME FUCKING INJURY #what a powerful thing it would be to have eri give overhaul his arms back #and overhaul learning about goodness and forgiveness from this girl he's done nothing but abuse and torture #and saves izuku........#its about ATONEMENT. its about GROWTH. its about IT NEVER BEING TOO LATE.#AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I LOVE YOU MY HERO ACADEMIA #... ok. i'm normal. its fine.#on another note #i loved the ending to my first bg3 run which i think i finished Tuesday/Wednesday. i cried.#IMMEDIATELY started a durge run where i'm playing a male human bard instead of the female half-wood elf ranger #i was like 'haha. i'll make a character based on hisoka from hxh! i'm gonna be SOOOO evil! >:))#and guess who still isn't good at being big evil. ME. at worst i'm probably chaotic neutral.#its wild i'm already finding SO MANY new scenes i missed on the first playthrough even though i'm making a lot of the same choices #so it still feels super fun and fresh. more so now because i kind of know the characters and the mechanics better #my current playthrough i'm with lae'zel shadowheart and asterion with no intention of switching out
