He doesn’t know when he fell asleep but when Bradley blinks an eye open, he sees the sun through the window, noticeably lower than when he got here. It casks a golden hue into the room against the baby blue walls. He rubs his face as he sits up, hears the sound of splashing outside along with laughter. Bradley forces himself to get up, the jet lag and time difference already messing with him, making him tired. “How many we need?” Bradley opens the door upon hearing the voice in the living room, maybe a bit too hard as the noise stops Jake in his tracks. Bradley doesn’t fail to notice how Jake’s shirtless, just in his swimming trunks, water dripping down his chest and abs. He feels a little light headed. or in which Bradley never realized how hard it would be to watch Jake Seresin walk around in swimming trunks for 2 weeks.

Seresin men love with reckless abandon. It’s put every man before him in the ground. Jake refuses to be buried. He flies like he has nothing left to lose (he doesn’t), a one man army (he is), leaving everyone else in the dust (so they don’t leave him). Admiral Kazansky claps him on the shoulder, says he expects great things from him, and Jake’s smile is feral as the rest of his flight school cohort looks on in disbelief. Hangman, they all say, like Jake’s entire personality was a long con, and he ranks first in class. Rooster doesn’t look at all. (They've got history spanning the better part of a decade and they are absolutely, positively not over it.)

All seven of them that were in the air are ushered to the carrier’s medical wing to be checked over; most of the attention is focused on Maverick, who’s trying to brush the doctors off, but Rooster can feel two sets of eyes on him. Phoenix is expected, the slight worry between her brows suggesting that she can tell he’s in pain despite his brave face. Unexpected is Hangman, who puts a gentle hand on Rooster’s back and looks at him with something akin to concern.

He figures he can be generous enough to share the surplus heat rather than suffer through the nuisance of watching Seresin gradually edge closer to hypothermia. (In which Hangman is often freezing and Bradley, who is a human furnace, notices and starts feeling begrudgingly obliged to do something about it.)

"-ster, hey," Jake snaps, holds his face in both hands and forces him to look his way, "breathe." Bradley does as he's told, as painful as it is, and his vision clears somewhat. Jake's crouched beside him, concern etched on his face, and what happened comes back to him in flashes. The mission going sideways at every possible turn, seeing Jake's plane get shot down in the sky, the less than smooth emergency landing in the woods that followed.

Truth be told, Bradley hadn’t been expecting to be team leader. Given Maverick’s continued criticism of his flying and the shit Bradley had said to him—it had startled him to be Maverick’s choice. It had startled Hangman too, judging by the way his jaw had tightened and how he’d looked away, avoiding Bradley’s eyes during the briefing. Bradley should have been ready for Hangman’s reaction after everything that had happened between them, but it had still stung. (AU Canon Divergence where Rooster is Dagger One, Hangman is Dagger Two, and the mission goes as badly as in the film. When Rooster is shot down, it's Hangman who follows after him.)
