(shakes tumblr) PLEASE TELL ME WHEN IM RAMBLING TOO LONG I CAN TAKE IT
anyways i'm going to continue the ramble here bc tumblr ate it:
But going back to the scene with Hope getting Alexander, like I don't know how to stress the idea that this group was a group that argued and fought early game and even split because they just couldn't see eye to eye on anything.
You get to that scene with Hope, who now lacks any reason to go on because at that point the only thing that he had going for him was the hatred and desire to kill Snow before he realized this was no way to live and it wouldn't save him from anything, and only finds that both as the youngest and least experienced, he felt more or less like a burden to the rest, even expressing the rest of the group to leave him behind.
This group who argued and fought early game all came together to protect Hope and assure him that he deserves to be here, just as anyone else does.
Like!!! That character development!!! The relationship building???? It's all so smooth and well done at that point that it felt so natural that they'd take care of each other. We are in this hellhole together, and we will get out of it together.
It's just!! I don't know. The charm that I have with this game is not in the battle system or the plot itself, but rather the characters and how human they all feel, and the relationship they build with one another. It's a really wonderful game if you're looking for something more character driven.
I need to replay this entire series at some point,, ahhh

It’s the year 2023 and people are still mischaracterizing Lightning into some vengeful bloodthirsty woman who gave a knife to an equally bloodthirsty teen to kill a man she isn’t fond of, when in reality she gave said bloodthirsty teen a knife to PROTECT HIMSELF, BEFORE she found out said teen wanted to murder Snow, and that’s when she realized “oh shit what have I done” when she learns what Hope wants to do with it, and tries to talk him OUT of his revenge, and tries to get Hope and Snow to talk to each other. Tired of those takes man.

snow and lightning have always mirrored each other. as he contemplates relieving her, her sister, his friends, and his city of his burden she contemplates the same; giving herself over as the goddess of death and staying behind for the sake of their (his) love and happiness. “you'll protect them, won't you? there's no need for me.” ‘snow and serah would survive and be happy. the only one who can save them is me.'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
one of the reasons him being right behind hope in standing by her is so monumental. returning the favor and having her back as they have always done for each other.
Tumblr media
the ‘you'll protect them, won't you? there's no need for me’ ‘you’ll protect her, won’t you? there’s no need for me’ parallel goes crazy. both teetering on the cusp, so afraid of what could be if they just SETTLED together to build a new home like they promised each other centuries ago, like they were always meant to do the moment he got on his knees to commit himself to her family.
“snow, am i the one who’s at fault? for leaving you alone for so long?”

some thoughts on the first couple hours of ff13, after picking it up for the first time in a decade
it's fun how much the party 1) doesn't know each other and 2) doesn't like each other! it's very different for a JRPG for the party to just NOT get along to this degree. the only people out of the initial 5 who even know each other are lightning and snow, and lightning has VERY good reason to dislike snow on the outset. the rest are just complete strangers! it's such a fun dynamic.
the dialogue does a perfectly fine job of explaining what l'cie are. like, they explicitly tell you multiple times. fal'cie is a little more murky, but even then, it's not hard to figure out.
that said, the opening is pretty slow in both story and gameplay. not having any magic makes sense for the world, but it makes the game very dull to play for a good 90 minutes. i think if it was remade today they'd streamline it a lot more, because while it's a fine tutorial, there are genuinely too many encounters before you actually get your magic powers.
hope's motivation is pretty thin from the beginning, tbh. watching your mom get killed and being understandably upset about it is perfectly serviceable as a motivation, but then hope runs into snow and doesn't confront him right away. i actually think hope is written quite well, better than i remembered — he comes across as an emotional teenager rather than someone making logical, rational decisions. but if you don't give the character that grace i can understand finding him frustrating.
snow is almost intolerable. i'm really leaning hard on the memory that i liked him a lot more in lightning returns, because he is so fucking annoying in the opening here. calling yourself a hero when there's absolutely no evidence of you being one (and in fact clear evidence that you're NOT a hero) is just obnoxious. also, snow's friend group just comes across as a bunch of weirdos than characters i want to know more about.
vanille is also a weirdo, but at least i know that's wholly intended. i really like the subtle touch of her already having 3 ATB bars when you get to play her initially.
the overall choice to start the game where it does makes sense from a gameplay perspective — it's where the fighting actually starts — but weakens the overall narrative, IMO. FF13 begins in medias res and leans hard on the fact that there were 13 days of prior events that culminated in the Purge... but since the player has no knowledge of all this and a lot of the background isn't immediately clear, it makes for a harder sell. i personally very much enjoy the storytelling in this game, but i can understand why others don't. it requires you to put the narrative together as you go.
once you actually get your magic powers, the game takes off like a rocket. the gameplay remains SO much fucking fun. it's a fascinating evolution of turn-based combat and it works SO well. i do remember how long it'll be until i have 3 party members again, and that part of it is a drag, but the actual combat is so enjoyable i hardly mind.
the game still looks gorgeous. i'm playing on steamdeck and am frequently amazed at how good it looks. obviously the FMVs are still incredible, but the ingame models look SO far ahead of their time, to say nothing of the environments. (also, the fact that i can play a PS3/360 game on handheld and have it Just Work is like magic to me.)
there are so many save points! this is hardly important, but it's making me laugh because i really didn't remember there being a save point around every corner. it's certainly convenient, though!
i don't know how much of it i'm going to play — i'm really supposed to be playing new games right now, not replays — but at the same time i've had SUCH a good time revisiting it that i may carry on for a while yet. we'll see!

Lmao I can't believe how badly you triggered the FF13 apologists on twitter. It's an objectively bad game, people. The "storyline" is garbage and requires that you spend hours reading codex entries so you can understand wtf just happened. The characters are vapid and uninteresting. The only one worth a damn is Fang. It's so bad that I, someone who has played and finished all FFs since I was a kid back in the 90s, couldn't finish it the first time I played it because it was so stupid and boring.
They're so angry their fave game sucks. That doesn't stop them from liking it, but it is objectively shit.
I don't think it's shit across the board. The ost is one of my faves and I have several tracks I listen to all the time. The combat system for XIII is pretty good but limited once you reach a certain level and can basically destroy everything. Tactics become meaningless. The locations are stunning! Definitely one of the prettiest FF games. The cut scenes are good for the most part.
Honestly it's just the story and majority of the characters that are shit. And I find it incredibly skeevy that Snow sits on Shiva's face and rides her. Isn't anyone else disgusted by the connotations of that?
Lightning absolutely is gender bent Cloud. I'm not even the originator of that. Everybody calls her gender bent Cloud. She literally is a soldier with a fake persona she puts on. She literally meets her "real self" and resolves her inner weakness FFS.
Did these people not play through the lifestream scene? Toriyama is a rip off artist.
Icba to go into all the other shit he stole from ffvii, but pretending XIII is some groundbreaking new storyline is deluded. It's a bunch of recycled tropes and characters combined into a messy garbage story that makes no sense because Toriyama can't write.

FF13 has six main characters in the party, and in my heart I think my favourite is Sazh. And a part of it is that Sazh seems to be the guy who gets left behind by the narrative the most.
I like all the cast - I'm defensive about Lightning and Hope because of the hate they got, and I thought that both of them had perfectly fine character arcs which got them to where they needed to go. Vanille is okay, probably damaged the most by the vocal director asking her English VA to emulate the Japanese VA's vocal intonation exactly, and while I don't remember Fang a whole lot, I remember the parts of the game where she's hanging out with Lightning and I honestly ship it pretty hard. Snow is a cool guy and he doesn't afraid of anything etc. - jokes aside, replaying the game, I really like Snow and I like how it's setting up his whole "hero" bluster to fail so he can develop and grow into the hero he naively shouts about being at the start of the game.
Sazh is cool because he's probably the oldest guy in the group, and his motivation is tied to his son and wanting to save him - the web of motivations across the board tends to get a bit tangled, but his whole deal is about his son. They make him a bit overly wacky, but I thought that he had some pretty cool interactions with Lightning and Vanille, and I like that compared to characters like Lightning and Snow - a talented but jaded military grunt and an overly optimistic hotheaded rebel leader, respectively - he's just a regular, down to earth, blue collar dude with a straightforward, personal goal that gets him tied up in the ensuing mess.
And like - while Lightning is a soldier and Snow is this like peacekeeper guy, Sazh is a pilot. He's a guy who loves his son and flies planes. I like down-to-earth characters like that. So yeah, while the more anime-adjacent characters get all strong and important and stuff, Sazh just kinda hangs out. He's definitely around, but in 13-2 he's basically just in a DLC and I read that he's doing his own thing in Lightning Returns.
The thing about Sazh - being a bit more sidelined than the rest of the crowd - is that he fits a mold that I tend to fall into pretty hard. Like when series 11 of Doctor Who aired, I found myself really rooting for Yasmin Khan; the other two companions were having their own played-out personal character arc, and she got the short end of the stick regarding characterisation. But also, because the other two companions were having their character arc with each other, Yaz was the primary companion who went off with The Doctor, and that kind of blossomed into its own thing.
And then when Ryan got shafted for series 12, I felt bad because his step-grandad was written as missing his nan more than he was, one of the episodes where he gets to shine and just be himself was arguably my least favourite episode of the revival series (not because of him, he was a bright spot - because the episode was predictable and bland exactly like how a low-effort Syfy original movie is) and his individual character arc - overcoming his dyspraxia - is ignored for most of the run, then suddenly reintroduced at the end of his run so it could culminate with him throwing something like a basketball. I have a lot of sympathy for Tosin Cole, who I thought was underutilized as an actor, and for the character of Ryan Sinclair for being an underutilized character. I love an underdog; Yaz got to rise above and Ryan got shafted.
And while I haven't played LR yet, Sazh gives me the same vibe. I'm pretty sure he only appears once in the main portion of 13-2 and then in a casino DLC, and I could be wrong but I think he's fairly well removed from the main conflict of Lightning Returns, at least compared to the main players in Lightning and Snow and stuff.
So yeah, as much as I already like him, I kinda have no choice but to stan considering the circumstances. Sazh Katzroy is great.

no one asked but the music in argenti's quest was driving insane for a while and i was wondering why only to realize that they both sound very ff13-esque.
"Cosmic Sacrifice for Love" sounds like "Giant's Fist" by Naoshi Mizuta
"A Gentleman's Fantasy"... I can't even pinpoint exactly which Masashi Hamauzu song it sounds like BUT IT USES A LOT OF SIMILAR HAMAUZU MOTIFS AND ITS REALLY GOOD LMAO just like listen to "Blinded by Light" :)

Currently Playing Final Fantasy XIII-2: Episode 1
April 29, 2023
I started Final Fantasy XIII-2 today and… wow! Such an intense intro and so many new things!! 😳 But I love this world and I’m looking forward to learning the new stuff, and honestly I’m just very happy that they kept the Paradigm system!! 🤩
Intro
Tumblr media
ALRIGHT, THAT INTRO. There's a lot going on. Lightning is kicking ass (as usual) but she is fighting against someone we know nothing about. It seems like she is in some weird end-of-the-world dimension? (We later learn it's called Valhalla.) And in the middle of all this, a guy named Noel randomly shows up and she gives him a mission to find Serah.
Tumblr media
But before all that, we get into a couple battles which are CHAOTIC. Moving battles, cinematic battles... it's all...so... NEW! I was very confused but quickly learned the gist of it.
These screenshots will probably come in handy later:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 1
At the end of Lightning's fight, Noel escapes through a gate and we are then taken to Serah. She has a dream, which is the intro we just watched. Her clothes change and she's confused (we're all confused).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, you get control of the CRAZIEST camera EVER. It took me awhile to get used to the mechanics of it... it's so... strange! It feels like FF13's camera, but almost like the developers wanted to create a "VR" experience... I don't know how to explain it, but the camera feels like it wants to "pull me in" instead of watching the game through a lens. It was weird at first, but now I'm used to it.
Tumblr media
The battles are also different and feel very strange at first, but again, once you get the hang of them, they become more fun. I'm so glad that Paradigms still exist. The Paradigm system is so good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So anyways, I think the game so far is doing a good job at setting up the new story of this game. But uh... WHERE IS SNOW!?! We learn he is off looking for Lightning, but it's weird that he's not there. Why would he leave Serah? The other NORA members are there (who are very friendly and silly).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Story-wise, what what I understand is that... Noel is from 700 years in the future, but possibly a completely different universe. He is the last of the humans, so he wants to change the future to have more humans living. Cocoon (in his world) doesn't exist anymore... Lightning is believed to be part of the pillar holding up Cocoon (in Serah's world, but Serah doesn't believe this, she thinks Lightning is alive).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We are going to join Noel in finding artifacts (things that don't belong in the present world) and use them to open gates to time-jump between times and universes. I told you, chaotic.
Tumblr media
We also have a moogle friend, is who is actually very cute. AND THERE ARE CHOCOBOS IN THIS GAME - THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY RIDE!!
Tumblr media
As Serah and Noel get ready to enter a time gate, the camera pans to 2 familiar people (the girl and guy from the intro!). Very suspicious... I wonder what they are doing in "the present" and what they are up to...

Ooh, have you never played 13 before!!? I hope you enjoy! I know people say awful things about it, but I actually really liked it. I absolutely adore the cast, especially Hope, Serah and Lightning. 💕

Serah & Terra
I’ve come to the conclusion that Serah (from FF13) is definitely designed after Terra. The game that makes this the most obvious is Dissidia NT.
In Dissidia (2008) they connected Terra with Rinoa though mannerisms, certain scenes (like the end), how she runs, etc, and I guess that in Dissidia NT they chose to connect her the same way with Serah. It’s more obvious when you look at the Dissidia NT scenes of Terra followed by FF13-2.
It’s odd really, since Terra isn’t Rinoa, Rem, or Serah...it makes me wonder what her default mannerisms and expression actually are. There are similarities they all share no doubt (they’re all noticeably thin), so we’ll just have to wait until she finally appears in another game (or just play WoFF).
However, Serah is a bit too much like Terra. Going through FFXIII and Dissidia NT...I mean, there’s even a mod that changes Terra’s clothing into Serah’s, so it’s not like I’m making some incredible observation!
There is a little thing I look at to see if a character is being tied to Terra in a direct way. In FFXIII-2, these things are...
Tumblr media
The character has a moogle, hugs a moogle, etc. However, Cinque in Type-0 is the moogle character in that game, so this can’t be enough (y’know, the character that looks like Aerith’s sibling?).
Tumblr media
Next one is children, and this one seems a bit forced, which makes it perfect! There’s almost nothing different with this scene and everything that happens in FF7R Sector 5! Surely, you all want Unreal engine default children NPCs in the next game, right! But yes, she’s just a school teacher. That Sarah girl from the FFXV DLC also deals with children.
Tumblr media
The most important one though is that she has a cat. She also has cat earrings, which leads credence to the theory that Terra was supposed to have had a cat in FF6. I mean, Serah is so literally designed after Terra that why wouldn’t it be believable? This cat doesn’t tell kids to kill her to prove her immortality though, so it’s not completely similar or female.
Tumblr media
And then you have those things she does with her hands. Terra does the same stuff with her hands in Dissidia NT. It’s too obviously the same. It disturbs me almost as much as Kuja’s thin waist and lack of pants. Even their clothes look similar now that I see both pics at the same time.
Tumblr media
From what I’ve read, people ask why FFXIII-2 went with the “time travel” plot. Why do they constantly say they’re in “another world” if they’re just in another time? Why are both Lightning and Snow missing? Who’s this random guy named Noel? Why do they mostly just focus on Serah in this game?
Well, it’s a rough draft for FF7R, is it not? FFXIII-3 may also be, but probably about the more latter part of the Remake. It’s the best explanation that I can give you as to why these two sequels exist. The key may just be that Serah “is” Terra, Snow & Lightning “are” Cloud in different ways (because they “come from clouds”), and Noel “is” Zack (although he’s more like a narrator about all the weirdness of this game...maybe Zack got the part later, since they started pushing him in 2018).
At least, that’s how I see it, because certain things are very similar to this Clerra stuff.
Tumblr media
The gist of it is that the main character of FF6 disappeared when Terra was “sleeping” (”Midgar Blues” line), and the FF6 opera/”Hollow” describe this character’s smile or laugh as if it were something that Terra remembered.
In FFXIII-2, Serah uses these same descriptions to describe her remembrance of Lightning hearing about her wedding with Snow before she just...vanishes. She vanishes to another world, just like the main character of FF6 who we now know of as Cloud. Serah is the only one who remembers this, and I would guess it’s the same with Terra (if Cloud magically remembers, why not her?)
It’s a bit weird though...Cloud is remembering Terra in the original FF7 AND FF7R, but how would the “canon” explain that? There is a story element they may use to explain it...
Tumblr media
The above line was to explain why Lightning disappeared from Serah’s life. If Lightning symbolizes Cloud, then the above could describe why he disappeared from FF6.
Although, seen in the original FF7′s perspective, this wouldn’t make sense, but would that stop the developers? Did Cloud appear in FF7 because there was some random disturbance in the timeline and he just ended up living in Nibelheim, but it wasn’t enough of a change so his girlfriend split into Tifa & Aerith and his arch-nemesis split into Sephiroth and Hojo? It sounds stupid, but what can you do?
“Midgar Blues” explains that he just...took the train to Midgar! Of course, the train could just be a symbol. It even explains how he met Terra in games like Dissidia, because they were under contract to...behave like they don’t know each other? It’s already silly when you think about it. Terra’s first line to Cloud is just “Why are you here?” Like, she already knows his name in WoFF too, yet Tidus didn’t know who Yuna was?
So, here’s another two pics showing the same hands being in the same positions in two different games with two different characters. I suppose you need to be the judge of these similarities yourself. Look into FFXIII-2 and maybe even FFXIII-3 if you want to more-or-less know what may happen in FF7R. That’s crazy to hear, but not as crazy as FFXIII-2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, Serah is just “Sarah” with the first ‘a’ changed into an ‘e’. Although “Sarah” already sounds like “Terra”, they went one step further!
It still means “princess” though, right?
Speaking about similar characters. There was once an FF7R promotional screen that released. The scene it showed did not appear in FF7R, but I felt something was odd about that Aerith. After posting the similarity on Twitter, some people told me that they almost look like the same person wearing different clothes. If scaled right, the torso and right arm are exactly the same. This is Terra’s Dissidia (2008) render btw.

I've been replaying FF13 lately and... Snow is much less annoying to me this time around. I remember finding him really annoying the last time I played this one - I did like him better in what little of him was in FF13-2 and I have no memory of FF13-3 though to be fair I did not finish that one because something came up and I don't remember what, but I'm gonna finish the trilogy this time.
Not my favorite FF game because it is very linear with only monster hunts for side quests introduced late in the game. But I do enjoy the story itself and the way in which it starts in media res with flashbacks to explain how the Purge was caused. And I think I find it more compelling now than when it came out because the first game is so focused on fear and prejudice and how easily people are 'unpersoned' by those in a place of privilege.
The first game stands alone really well, but I'm a sucker for complicated time travel stories so I do enjoy the overarching storyline.
But yeah. Snow. I do get why past me found him annoying. He's a laugh or cry type of person, but instead of 'laugh' it's actually more of 'unearned bravado while boasting he's a hero' and... I get it now. He needs the front to keep going. He's declaring himself a hero because then maybe he'll start to believe it himself. He calls himself a hero because someone has to do the hard jobs and he's not going to wait to see if anyone else will volunteer. He says he's Serah's hero because he knows she needs one and even if he's scared he's going to stand by her and support her no matter how hard things get, even if her sister won't believe she's a l'cie, even if she's turned to crystal, even if it means risking turning into a monster and defying his focus to do her proud.
I do still find him a bit annoying tbh, but I'm much more sympathetic to him now. And he may never really believe it, but he is a hero. The moment he realized his anguish over Serah being a l'cie did no one any good, got up, found Serah, and swore to stand by her anyway... he really was her hero, all game long.
