2000 Château Smith Haut Lafitte
Happy Thanksgiving friends! Thankful for you all and of course, good wine. This Smith Haut Lafitte is no exception. Bright fruit on the nose - blackberries, dark cherries, fresh leather, and tobacco. Similar notes the palate with a nice velvety finish. This guy is still so young, despite being 22 years old! Lovely Bordeaux from an awesome vintage.

France day 18 part 1
Tumblr media
Today is the day we start our northwards journey. First stop source de caudelies in Bordeaux part of the chateau Smith haut-Lafitte.
We have a tour of the cellars at 2.30pm so we go the direct route. We arrive in enough time to get a plate of fresh goats cheese and salad for lunch.
Excellent tour from somebody who clearly knows a lot about wine. Really interesting seeing into the cooperage where they still make 90% of their own barrels. Their cellar is enormous and dug under the ground of the vineyards.
Really enjoyed trying the wine - both the 2nd white and red are very nice - the first wine is nice but still young and difficult to justify the price difference.
Then to the pool to enjoy some sunshine, reading and a little bit of swimming.
I jumped into the hot tub in the shape of a barrel! Really enjoying the book I'm reading ted Chiang - exhalation - a series of Sci-Fi short stories that got a cover quote from Barack Obama. Really interesting investigation of technology and philosophy - dealing with time travel, multiple world theory, AI, and free will. Separate stories but intersecting in theme. I loved the last one with the prisms. I have been boring Laura with my plot summaries and how they make me feel. Particularly relevent is the one that deals with memories and more specifically the difference between verbal and pictorial memories - the idea being that there is a machine called the life logger invented that records all of your life and more significant they then figure out a way of indexing and making it semantically searchable (I'm pretty sure Google are pretty much there with this - partly so that they can stop baddies on YouTube) - and then having it appear in your HUD automatically - effectively replacing the fallable human memory with something precise and emotion free. Intertwined with this is a story of an African tribe adjusting to using writing as opposed to their traditional oral histories.

Our friend Dave is joining us for a few days which is fun!
Dave joins me in the hot tub!
There's a funky coffee machine in the room which makes a change from the endless Nespresso machines - somebody at Nestlé did a great job of selling these to hotels...
Tumblr media
Cocktails predinner in the bar - great Mexican- French bartender ages his negronis and vieux carres in little barrels. I have a negroni and it's lovely - it was served with smoke which looks nice and gives a good effect but makes no difference to the taste imho. Laura has an off list French 75.

Dinner in the bistro was pretty decent but not great and fairly pricey for what we got. Pate en croute and pork with chickpeas.

Les Sources de Cheverny
After an extensive renovation, this 18th-century castle in the heart of the Loire Valley was acquired by Alice and Jérôme Tourbier, owners of a sister property to Les Sources de Caudalie - a vinotherapy spa in the vineyards of Bordeaux’s Château Smith Haut Lafitte.
A 49-room country-chic house hotel, spread amongst six buildings, on a 110-acre estate outside of Cheverny, a two-hour drive south of Paris. The property was redesigned by architect Yves Collet and the studio Be-poles.
Guests can opt for one of the 13 rooms in the main chateau or a wooden French barn house scattered in the meadow close to the small lake adjacent to the restaurant.
There is plenty to discover on the estate grounds, exploring the forest paths either on foot or by bike. There are two restaurants whose menus change with the seasons. Open for dinner, in a barn-like structure, is restaurant L’Auberge, the other is Le Favori in the heart of the estate and, of course, there is plenty of wine to select from being in the Loire Valley region.
In the wellness and yoga retreat is Spa des Sources which uses Caudalie vinotherapy products by Alice’s sister Mathilde Thomas, co-founder of the skin-care line in which wine products such as grape seeds, skins, and stems are applied to the body.

TAUPE IS DOPE
by Daniel Penny
Ahead of a trip to Paris, I splurged on a new suit. My wife and I were headed to France for two weeks in celebration of my new godson. There was going to be a fancy party for one side of the family and a more casual fete for the other. I firmly believe in traveling with only a carry-on bag, so whatever I bought needed to be as flexible as possible. The answer to my conundrum came in an unexpected form: a lightweight cotton suit in taupe--not quite brown, not quite gray--a chameleonic color of surprising versatility. Below are some excerpts from my taupe-themed travel diary.
Day 1: We arrive in Paris early in the morning. The flight was freezing, and I wish I’d worn my new suit, if only for the extra layer. We make our way to an apartment in the Marais and unpack. That night we’re grabbing dinner with some relatives, so I bust out the jacket to wear as a blazer. It looks a little wrinkled, so I hang it in the locker-sized bathroom while I take a shower, and voila! Good as new.
Day 3: The first party is being held at a townhouse in the 16th. Damn. Since I’ll be ceremonially washing my godson’s feet in front of a bunch of swanky French strangers, I opt for the full suit tonight, paired with a Post-Imperial shirt, and some slightly beat white bucks. Champagne by the boatload and a dozen relatives with the Gaullic equivalent of nicknames like Muffy, Biff, and Chip. I do my best to smile and keep them all straight. Bon Soir!
Day 5: We take the train from Paris to a little village called Soup-Chateau-Landon, where we’ll be partying in this baby’s honor with the other side of the family in a rustic little farmhouse and barn. It’s actually kind of chilly today, so I wear the taupe pants with a white linen shirt and a jean jacket. The party is held outside, and the baby’s great-uncle leads a jazz band in a smooth rendition of “A Foggy Day (In London Town).” Wine, cheese, and a lot of bizzous past midnight.
Day 8: Not much use for a taupe suit at a farmhouse, but for the train ride back to Paris and then on to Bordeaux, I decide to wear it paired with a navy polo--if only to minimize wrinkles from schlepping it in my duffle. Between trains, we kill some time with an aperitif at Le Train Bleu, an art-nouveau restaurant in Gare de Lyon. It makes the Oyster Bar in Grand Central look like an oyster shack, so I’m glad I dressed for the occasion. I have never traveled while wearing a suit before, and am amazed by how much better waiters treat me (even in France!).
Tumblr media
Day 10: We wake up in Cap Ferret, which is a beach town on the Atlantic coast. Most of our time is spent in bathing suits, but on the last day, we head to a vineyard for some mind-blowing wine: Chateau Smith Haute Lafitte. The dusty color of my jacket goes with the setting perfectly, but even the lightest material is no match for the Bordelaise sun. I just wear the pants; luckily, my waistband has been accommodating my diet admirably. After a few glasses of delicious reds, we head back to Bordeaux for a return trip to Paris, and a few final days in Batignolles.
Day 11-13: When we arrived in Paris, the first heat wave of the summer had just ended, but now the second one comes wafting into the city. It’s a dry heat, but by midday, we’re over 35C. There’s no AC in the trains, or even in some of the museums, so with some regret, I realize that I must throw in the towel, or at least, hang up the suit. It’s earned a break as the hardest working outfit of my vacation.
