This just came in the mail. A pencil. A beautiful book that has my words in it alongside mentors and colleagues and friends and strangers. Also, a towel. A poster. A collage. A letter from a friend. I wrote two essays for THE NEST by Scott Massey—one is about racism, postmodernism, history, and graphic design called “Other Processes” and the other about form languages wreathed in poetics called “This is a pencil.” My friend, along with other friends, literally made it into a pencil. THE NEST is the result of years of work by so many people coaxed into one of the most beautiful books I’ve had the luck to bear witness to. Published by @slantedpublishers THE NEST is a book about process—the process of designing, and how it changes both what we make and who we are. THE NEST is also a book about memory—how memory builds up in layers and influences our experiences, as well as the things we make. The focus of The Nest is a series of posters created in celebration of the exhibition Inside Out & Upside Down: Posters from CalArts 1970–2019. @slanted_publishers asked me to contribute a poster for their upcoming slanted magazine #36 @coexist.36 Posters have to promote. Visual, graphic, or generally designers must need to have something to say or express. Here is my second submission. In this difficult period we all live in, there are many questions. Much as the uncertainty surrounding issues such as poverty, political and economic changes, human progress, political turmoil, social isolation, climate changes, human rights issues and freedoms. Leaving your fate in the hands of others is in itself a resignation. So, choose how you'd like to live. Make your dreams come true, work with yourself, try to be better, read books, stay or be creative, raise your voice, talk about what's bothering you. This is not a ego push or ego pressure to become sad, or bad-competitive, but to be better for yourself. It is time to live, do not just exist, do not stand idly by.
