i have this silly little undeveloped au in my brain that's just like. tedependent but it's the sarah jane adventures. sort of. not literally in the doctor who universe necessarily but like. local intrepid reporter trent crimm investigating weird shit except the local neighborhood kids will not leave him alone.

i have so many thoughts about this but none of them are coherent enough for a proper fic i think:

i just think trent being good with kids, generally. go mentor figure trent! (what this has nothing to do with my thesis what do you mean)

trent, like sarah jane pre-series, having a sort of reputation in the neighborhood (or in general, since i'm also incorporating his actual canon vibes/story) as to being standoffish, aloof, cold, etc., and generally anti-social, keeping to himself. and as the kids keep dragging him into things kicking and screaming he might also be dragged kicking and screaming into a community <3

if his daughter is essentially luke does that mean he adopted her under Strange Alien-Related Circumstances? absolutely it does, yes.

see i've got two great ideas for ted/tedependent. on one hand, although in the context of SJA/nuwho i'm not so much one for sarah jane and the doctor as a Thing, ted playing the role of like. someone from trent's Mysterious Past who he won't talk about who set him on this path? someone who was kind and wonderful and changed his life but then--at least it feels like to him--abandoned him? someone who made him a better person--from doing whatever journalism he used to do to this--someone who he's still kinda in love with... but trent can no longer even really talk to......until he shows up again? that's some good shit, not gonna lie. although i'm jimmying that into a happy ending somehow, goddamn it.

ALTERNATIVELY. henry being one of the Neighborhood Kids (as if we're using "canon" kids, we've got limited options) and ted being an oblivious parent. trent is trying to get these kids to STOP POKING INTO DANGEROUS ALIEN NONSENSE PLEASE THIS IS HIS JOB PLEASE STOP BREAKING INTO HIS HOUSE but they're stubborn and smart and they may or may not have saved his life once or twice and oh GOD THIS IS SO IRRESPONSIBLE but he can't just TELL THESE RANDOM NEIGHBORS about ALIENS. but like anyway this just painful secret identity-esque nonsense where ted knows henry's taken a shine to that nice journalist down the street and his daughter but does NOT know that henry is getting into Shenanigans(TM). this could lead into all sorts of drama about, you know, his kid being in danger... or, alternatively, ted has worked with some unit/torchwood-esque place before and is like OHH you know what? this explains that time i thought i heard you speaking an alien language. cool, cool. and trents like. .....WHAT

etc. i'm not wording this well but i think you get the idea.

if you really really wanted to make it complicated you could do both, considering the doctor's whole thing--either a fob watch or a regeneration--but honestly, i don't want to do that, so i won't

some of the adults do definitely get involved though. keeley either clocks that shit right away or thinks she's clocked it but she's actually clocked something entirely different. she's like i know you're mi6 babe ;) and he. is not. meanwhile roy having ten freakouts in a row and then being like nvm i'm fine with this. (is not fine with this, but will be eventually). jamies like yeah aliens. everyone knows about those. and they're like what?? no they dont?? and so on.

is beard an alien? genuinely no one's sure. he's not telling.

anyway my point is. trent crimm, intrepid journalist, running around trying to stop alien shenanigans while Those Meddling Kids keep following him around. trent crimm doin a little Breaking And Entering. scooby doo shit. and he has such an interesting mix of seeming suave and badass and then immediately doing something embarrassing. trent crimm--via shenanigans and also Those Meddling Kids dragging him into their lives (aka he tries to keep his distance SO badly and only is involved when dangerous shit is going down but like then it's all. child knocking on his door like IT'S AN EMERGENCY OPEN UP and hes like WHAT WHAT IS IT and theyre like can you help me with my homework :( and hes like. fuck. yeah fine what do you want help with. (some subjects he's very helpful on others he's VERY not) until they're like okay but you're coming to this bbq right. and he's like? no? and they're like you're coming to this bbq right. and so on) ANYWAY the point is they keep dragging him into their lives and now oops! trent actually knows his neighbors and has to go through the mortifying ordeal of being known. but that also means that when he gets badly hurt or sick he's used to the empty hospital room but now he actually gets people showing up and forcing baked goods on him and shit and i'm just feeling a lot of things about this extremely hypothetical au based on my already existing feelings about trent gaining a community in s3/post-canon,

wait does this mean trent gets sonic lipstick? HELL YEAH IT DOES

It's been a while since I wrote anything, partly because of technical issues. But I'd like to get back to writing in the next few weeks. Which fic do you think I should go back to first?

stormlight au number 27. Elhokar and Kaladin time travel from Oathbringer to Way of Kings.

IMPORTANT: kaladin and elhokar develop weird unhealthy codependent situationship.

Kaladin isn't pulled away by Adolin when he has his meltdown over Elhokar's death, over not being able to Save Everyone, and instead clings to Elhokar's dying body as a symbol of his failures. When Kaladin is killed in the confusion, something - the universe/ sja anat/ tattered pieces of honor and odium / hey maybe even adolnesium themselves who knows is like - errr. What. nope. Not my special boy!  Go back, Try Again. 

Kaladin wakes up in Way Of Kings, maybe a highstorm or two before the Tower. Kaladin is just like ah i see eternal damnation. Eternal damnation for my failures. Takes a little time before even considering the idea of time travel. Fortunately his attitude and response to thinking he's been consigned to everlasting ironic torment is remarkably similar to his response to the events of the first book, so a few days go by before the bridgecrew notices he's more fucked up than usual. 

Elhokar wakes up and (i enjoy the idea of THE COSMERE ITSELF SAVING KALADIN STORMBLESSED! and also Elhokar is there!) has no idea what to do. Testy with both thadeus and dalinar. Figures out some lightweaving. Maybe passes an order that the bridgemen should all have shields, in case Kaladin doesn't remember the future either, as a little goodwill present. After a couple more days he sneaks out to thadeus's bridgemen barracks to ask the hero for help, since none of the other kholins are responding to his leading mention of things he saw in 'dreams'.

Obviously he's not going to show his actual face when the guy who murdered him is in the room.

Dark amorphous blob with glowing blue eyes entering the barracks: Greetings Stormbles - do you all just sleep on the floor? And what is that smell? Heralds, this is depressing. Bridge four: WHAT THE - VOIDBRINGER! VOID- Kaladin : calm down, men, that's not what a voidbringer looks like. I think...its an unmade? Are there unmades in damnation? Only - that voice...do i...know you... Dark amorphous blob with glowing blue eyes: well, looking around, i suppose i can see why you would think this is braize, but come on, we're not actually dead and the almighty sent us ...here... for a reason. I need you to do your hero thing, huphup. Kaladin: ...shallan? Dark amorphous blob with glowing blue eyes: I suppose I am glad for the memory confirmation, but do i look - ugh - okay for hopefully obvious reasons i'm not going to put my true face on, so don't be an idiot and blurt out my real name, but i can probably wear the, ah, outfit she picked for me in Kholinar [Amorphous dark blob turns into pretty light eyed woman]: tada! Bridgefour: uh Teft: storms...you're one of them too...i think... Skar: does anyone else feel like we're in more danger now? Like better we were found with a voidbringer in our quarters than a brightlady? Drehy: no, i agree Hobber: shh! We're finally getting the captain's mysterious backstory ! Bissig: i TOLD you guys he must have got involved with a brightlady Leyten: and i bet on voidbringers which we all agreed was 10 to 1 so i'm pretty sure i'm winning Kaladin: Kaladin: [starting to tear up] Brightlady: uh Kaladin: [grabbing brightlady and audibly sobbing] Brightlady: UH Teft: storms you really broke him  Brighlady: what! I have no idea whats happening! He doesn't even like me! You all must have done something to him! Kaladin:  i thought...i failed you...that I cohldnt save you...i saw you get stab ed Brightlady: oh...huh. you really take that 'protect everyone' thing seriously. Do you do this every time someone you're guarding gets hurt? Moash: yeah... he's pretty much always like this Bridge four: [general nods of agreement] Brightlady: [awkwardly patting kaladin on the back]: well. The good news is i'm much more stab resilient now! Aha. Still would prefer not to... Kaladin: [weeping] Brightlady: come on bridgeman, there's a desolation coming remember? Saving the world and all that? Rest of bridge four: 

Anyway Elhokar somewhat intentionally leads the non Kaladin members of bridge four to believe that the actual Elhokar is dead, and that he (she? No, he, i think. Maybe they? Just - just go by what face i'm wearing!) has taken the king's place through dark magics. He assumes that the bridgemen will like him better if they think he's some sort of unholy kingkilling blood sorcerer, as opposed to the actual elhokar kholin.

Depressingly, he's right.

Unhealthy situationship! They both see each other as a Symbol. Elokhar is the Chance to Save Everyone. Kaladin is the True Hero and Leader. Kaladin starts tutoring elohkar on how to be a good person and leader, blaming his death on not doing so earlier. 

Kaladin's ability to do so is somewhat hindered by his deep unwillingness to see elhokar in danger, and his extreme tendency to take control when he sees something wrong. He objectively recognizes that this was also dalinars problem, but still shakes like a chihuahua sometimes to avoid grabbing elhokhar by the scruff of the neck when he does something stupid. Definitely questionable how qualified kaladin is for teaching, but like. There is progress.

Elhokar uses kaladin ruthlessly as a glowing flying tool to instill fear in his highprinces, which makes kaladins skin crawl a little, but it is helping enforce a lot of social changes protecting darkeyes that he never dreamed could happen. 

Elhokar at somepoint offers to lightweave kaladin and make him king elokhar instead. 

Kaladin doesn't even know where to start unpacking that.

Intriguingly, the whole not seeing the man for the symbol thing, while being Not Great, is also the source of a bit of solid common ground for each other. A few dizzy moments in private where they connect uniquely on what it is to have no friends who are not followers. Of never being allowed to be just a man.

Also some incredibly specific trauma bonding of living through the actual apocalypse. Both have some serious issues regarding dying in the absolute shitshow that was that the unmade palace. Mutual extreme distress when elokhar accidentally lightweaves a flashback. Please imagine a servant walking in on King Elhokar and Lord Stormblessed clinging to one another and shaking on the ceiling while a nightmareish orgy of death takes place beneath them. Paid off extremely well to never discuss what she saw, not that she'd be able to explain it.

Hard to completely cover up because she ran away screaming. Couple people assume the two men were fucking, but honestly most assume by her genuine distress, i mean jokes aside, those are two very good looking men and she was, you know, screaming in terror, so almost definitely not that. Some sort of vision from the almighty? Maybe a voidbringer?? 

Bridgefour, under the impression that 'elhokars' 'true form' is closer to the shadowy nightmare blob they initially saw (do you know how hard it is to lightweave invisibility? It was a rough draft, alright?), are largely convinced that she walked in on that. And maybe them fucking, uncertain about that part. They are initially supportive of their captain's potential monsterfucking (the man deserves to relax) but grow increasingly concerned about some of the red flags in their relationship. 

Anyway, needless to say, dalinar and kaladins dynamic is weird in this one. Still a fair amount of instant mututal respect. But now elhokar is cribbing shamelessly from dalinars hero journey and calling him out  on his tendency to seize power, undermining elokhar. So dalinar feels a lot more wobbly about his place. 

Apparently not even the visions from god are special, elhokar and his secret radiant (a real radiant!) had been receiving some too? Better, more useful ones even? 

And the radiant is taking his place in elhokars trust, and calling him out even MORE for not teaching elhokhar how to be a leader when he was younger, stormfather,  did you want him to fail? how did it get this bad? Fortunately, Dalinar is willing to get humble and Grow. Honestly, dalinar and kaladin are probably in a better place. More mutual trust. Less constant exchange of unpayable debts. Kaladins rank is really confusing, but theyre closer to equals than they were in canon.

Teft: lad we need to talk about you and the Uh. Lightweaver. shapeshifter? Kaladin : what? I thought you guys were warming up to eachother Lopen: gancho they're the best unholy creature i've ever met. Proper respect for herdassian women. Skar: lopen does not agree with this intervention but the rest of us are...concerned. Rock: is how he looks at you that we are worried. Like starving man looks at beloved pet axehound. Kaladin: Kaldin: what? Moash: you know i'm fond of the guy, it's like Skar said, we're a little...concerned. That he wants to, you know, kill and eat you so he can take your place. Kaladin: he wouldn't - he definitely wouldn't eat me. Teft: see, the fact that you didn't immediately argue with the 'murder you to take your place' part of that is concerning. Kaladin: he's just going through a lot. Rock: yes, but way you circle one another...again, like axehound and man, only you change places Kaladin: hes my king! and im secretly tutoring him on how to be a leader! of course our dynamic is going to be odd!  Teft: look its - he's not a normal person. He doesn't know how to...be a human, i don't think.  Kaladin: yeah, sure, I'll give you that. but he's getting better! You saw how he said thank you to sigzil the other day! Moash: kal... Kaladin: i can fix him Moash: kal

Sure hope dalinar never overhears bridgefour and elhokar talking about how glad they are that his nephew is dead and that new elhokar took his place! He definitely wouldn't go into a murderous rage and do something regrettable if he believed that were true!

Here I was, going “I’m going to read so many fics”, and then I didn’t. So yeah, I skipped a week because last week all my free time went to the viddy game Ni No Kuni II. The only thing I read last week was non-fic (Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid) (which apparently got adapted into a TV show), only to give my Switch a break after being on for 6 hours in a row.

But I finished the game and here we go!

First off, last Friday I woke up to an AO3 e-mail, saying that @thnxforknowingme​ has written a gift for me. Yeah folks, it’s Plucking Daisy Petals, the unofficial, but definitely canon, prequel to my fic Ljubim te. It’s been a week and I am still not over it. It’s Blaine/Quinn, which will not be everyone’s cup of tea, but that is kind of the point. Comphet, babey! I will not shut up about this fic.

Not a fic, but I also read the first two graphic novels of the Percy Jackson series. I read the Lightning Thief in Dutch, because that was the one available in the library, and the Sea of Monsters in English, although someone drew a lot of dicks in it.

Back to fics, sort of. It is a fic for all intent and purposes. I read @truffeart​‘s Zelda AU String of Fate. I am a sucker for Zelda AUs and Zelda redesigns and this one is just lovely and the art style is gorgeous! (This post also taught me that you cannot chrono tags on Tumblr’s app-desktop hybrid lay-out.)

I also finally posted some SJAEU content and someone kudo’d it. Broadstrokes on AO3 also has 4 small SJA fics and I read them all. Ah, the pain of being in a small fandom. It’s a small fandom AND a lot of the fics posted on AO3 are crossover fics, with SJA being mashed together with others, especially with other Whoniverse shows. I am not judging. I did the same thing when I wrote A rip in time, or as I call it, the Ultimate Doctor Who clusterfuck, but that means that when there’s a SJA fic that’s only SJA, I go 👀👀👀. Aka, I read all Broadstrokes stuff and I also read Still holding my hand (canon MCD warning... untagged... ah well) by Beezonia on AO3 and now I am incredibly 🥺🥺🥺.

@cerriddwenluna​ has been recommending some smaller fics on @the-lima-bean​! @starsanchor​ wrote Waves Are Rising, a new take on the superhero trope. It isn’t about superheroing, it’s about being a loved one waiting for a superhero to come home.

Another one is A “Safe” Choice by @special-bc-ur-part-of-it​. Iz, I am a sucker for people lifting small things from their own lives for fic, so learning about a safe guy. A Hot Safe Guy, in this case. A Hot Safe Gay Guy, sorry Tina. This is also so funny to read right after listening to the podcast episode where Jenna explains where Tina’s crush on Blaine comes from.

This is an idea that’s been floating around my head for a bit now (also because I’ve been rewatching The Sarah Jane Adventures again)

Basically it’s like a fantasy au with the main cast from sja and a few appearances from other doctors and companions!

So Rani is the crown princess of the kingdom Foloresia and is set to marry an old childhood friend of hers.

Rani runs away a few days before the wedding and meets one of the magic users in her mothers court who goes by Sarah Jane

She offers Rani a way out from the wedding and from royalty for a few months after a bit of pestering from the princess (rani knows Sarah Jane is a bit of a loose cannon and she’s heard from her dad that she travels a lot)

The meet at midnight along with Sarah’s son Luke and one of the knights Clyde along with his friend a healer Maria.

They tell Rani all about the journey their about to embark on to stop a dark force named The Trickster, a long time enemy of Sarah Jane who she now finally knows how to defeat for good.

But they have to travel across several kingdoms so she can get the three artefacts that can seal the trickster forever, and one of those kingdoms includes Sarah’s old home with her ex fiancé Lord Peter Dalton and some bad memories.

Another artefact leads them to Sarah’s old friend John and his wife Rose who pretty much want nothing to do with the impending war due to their past.

And the last artefact (a cursed necklace) means that Sarah has to face the past she’s tried so desperately to hide, along with her growing dark magic that could potentially kill her.

All whilst the trickster plots to make Sarah Jane his once and for all

35 Questions for Fanfic Writers

Do you prefer canon-compliant, AUs, or something in-between?

I'd say mostly canon-compliant. I usually like to work within the canon stuff, while adding into it with my pairings and headcanons. For instance, with Classic Doctor Who/Sarah Jane Adventures, Fourth Doctor and Sarah are a couple. I have them separate in "Hand of Fear" like in canon, and not see each other again until post-SJA.

Another example with TNG, Data's canon first attempt at a romantic relationship is with Jenna D'Sora, so I don't have him and Geordi get together until after that.

Ramble about any fic-related thing you want!

A background detail for my wip "Deal with a Devil". I don't know if I'll somehow mention this in the story itself, but In the canon timeline, this story takes place soon before "DS9: In the Pale Moonlight."

So I have Data calling Garak for advice for dealing with the devil that is Kivas Fajo for this mission, shortly before Garak has to be the devil for SIsko in order to bring the Romulans into the war on their side.

Something something about parallels and all that :P

You ever have a funky au concept that gets stuck in your brain???

So, hear me out....

The (now "retired") Knight, Sarah Jane Smith - most known for her travels with the powerful and mysterious wizard, The Doctor - encounters one of the village girls (Maria, who keeps sneaking into her garden, but she allows it because she's always very amusing), who has suddenly been very odd. When she starts investigating - with the help of her squire, Rani - she discovers that Maria and another village kid, Clyde, have been wandering around with an odd new boy and researching odd things, like magic and the fae. When the terrible sorceress Wormwood's servants attack them, she steps in, only to be dragged into a plot of intrigue all surrounding one young Changeling, recently named Luke.

How AU should my Molly Yates fic be?

By this, I mean that I'm toying with the idea of having Maria Jackson and her dad Alan stay. At the end of The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 1, Alan receives a job offer in America. He and Maria move and the Chandras buy their house.

If I have Maria stay, I still plan to have Rani in the story. Yes, I know it will take some creative thinking to have Maria, Molly, and Rani take part in adventures together. But I can't bear for Molly to lose her new best friend.

Torchwood/Sarah Jane Adventures Headcannon

Luke misses all the alien adventures with Sarah Jane so he moves to Cardiff and joins torchwood

Jack is originally hesitant but warms up to the idea when he learns of Luke's background

Jack becomes a sort of father figure to Luke and they both talk about the doctor too much according to the team

Each member of the team gets protective over him and teach him new skills

Ianto walks in on Luke and his boyfriend and they have a talk about his sexuality with Jack too

Jack secretly always knew and Luke secretly knew of his and iantos relationship but neither ever mentioned it

Tosh and Luke find out that Sarah Jane talked to the same alien tosh did in Greeks Bearing Gifts and they come up with theories together

Some pieces of alien technology are new to the team and Luke casually mentions he already knows about it

Some nights Luke and Jack stay up late looking at the stars and wondering if the doctor will ever come back to them

Luke cant pronounce the pterodactyl's name (Myfanwy) so he gives it a new, easier nickname

Sarah Jane had always said torchwood had too many guns so Luke would rarely use them even when the others insisted

16. Do you re-read old fics? Is there a time in your writing you won’t go back to? I do, every now and then! It's often out of nostalgia - missing not just a particular fandom but also the time in my life when I loved it so much that I was creating content for it, and that fandom experience. I'm definitely far more inclined to go back to more recent fic just because going back too far definitely has a much higher risk of cringe, but I think I'm generally more amused at my much older fic than totally mortified. A few months back I found an old laptop from middle school that had some absolutely batshit fic I have NO memory of writing, and that was a really fun, if embarrassing, throwback.

18. Do you only write when you’re inspired, or do you try and sit down at specific times and write no matter what? I am absolutely terrible at sitting down and writing no matter what, and am guided almost entirely by fickle inspiration. I do try to sign up for gift exchanges and things like that to put some fire to my feet, which is helpful!

19. If you could write an ideal fic, what would it include? Something long and plotty, which is not my forte. The most recent concepts that I'd like to magically manifest into existence are my Succession/Damages crossover AND my SVU/Damages crossover concepts, a rewrite of seasons 2/3 of Succession where Gerri steered the phone call in 2x04 in a different, non-sexual direction and the Roman/Gerri dynamic evolved differently, an SVU AU where Kathy died in Paternity, and a Doctor Who/Sarah Jane Adventures crossover featuring post-SJA Sarah Jane, Twelve, Clara, and - down the line - Missy, Bill, and Maria Jackson (I am single-handedly captaining the JackPott ship!).

There have been a couple of very long-standing fic ideas I've had and have toyed with over the years, some going back over a decade:

Post-School Reunion AU where Sarah Jane joins Ten and Rose in the TARDIS

The Cat Grant Backstory Fic that has been pretty jossed at this point but is still true to me

Sansa/Margaery angsty high school AU

Alas, all of these currently and likely always will live in my mind, or in rambling texts to patient friends, scribbles in long-lost notebooks, word docs on old laptops or Google docs filled with incomplete outlines, etc.
