Chapter 1: Part 2
The streets of Brooklyn were bustled with the feeling of summer. People dressed from head to toe in their fly start of the summer fits, booming car stereos blasting dancehall, soca, and dembow as they rattle the ground below.
Traffic was bad as usual due to the many parties and events happening this evening. Kids played and laughed as they ran through the park. Gavin and his friends took over the basketball court as they usually do. Call it a cliche, but it was a dream for some of them to be a part of the NBA. Especially, Gavin. But they were kids.
It was two against two: Gavin and Terrell vs. Ramir and Fabian.
They were too into their game to notice the little girl staring at them in awe through the fence. Her name was Tamara. She stood there for a bit, watching their moves, desperately wanting to play but was too shy. It was a new place, a new country. Everyone here knew each other. Ramir was the only kid she knew, since they’re cousins, and she thought it would be great to play with him and his friends. She continued to watch them play until she finally got the courage to speak up and join.
“Can I play?”, Tamara asked. All four boys looked back at her, startled. Ramir rolled his eyes and yelled out, “No girls allowed! Its only two against two! You’re an odd number”. Tamara knitted her eyebrows together, annoyed at his lame excuse. “I just wanted to play!”
Ramir replied, “Go play on your bike or something!”. Not wanting to deal with her anymore, he turned back to his group, trying to get back to the game. “Come on”
At times, Tamara hated that her and Ramir were cousins. He was more like an annoying and mean older brother. She was slightly hurt because she had no one to play with. NYC was nothing like Trinidad. So, what better to do than just to ride around on her bike, right? Wrong. The thought of riding her bike was dreadful. Her father bought her that bike, hoping she would learn but it was still so difficult for her.
She reluctantly hopped on, trying to keep her balance. For a few seconds, she was able to ride steadily, but it quickly turned bad after she lost control, steering the handlebars left and right, rapidly. With this fast movement, she was launched from her bike, hitting the concrete.
Startled by her fall, she felt a hot, stinging feeling on her knee and the palm of her hand. Tears started to swell in her eyes as she stared back at her bloody palm. She tried to stand up but instead sat there, holding her also scrapped knee. A cry escaped her lips as the burning only got worse.
Over at the basketball court, the boys took a short break from the game to get water, but Gavin squirmed, feeling his bladder getting full. He quickly ran the nearest bathroom to relieve himself. After washing his hands and exiting, he looked around for his group only to find them back on the court. But before he could make his way over there, he could hear crying not too far away. Taking another look around, his eyes landed on Tamara sitting on the sidewalk, crying. The eight-year-old stood there, contemplating on if he should go on about his business or to go over there and check on her. Although Gavin could be inconsiderate at times, he had his moments of humanity. And this was one of those moments.
He calmly walked over to her, inspecting the scene. It was obvious that she had fallen off her bike. He looked down at her as she still sat there, crying with her eyes shut. It took her a few seconds to realize that there was someone standing above her.
Her cries stopped when she looked up at him with tear-stained cheeks. They stood there for a few seconds staring back at each other not saying a word.
He finally extended his hand out. She sniffled and wiped her tears with the back of her hand, before reaching out to him.
Thinking quickly, Gavin lifted her up and walked her back to their apartment building that was around the corner. He was a little hesitant in letting someone in his apartment, but it was the only way. He sat her on the couch while he searched the bathroom for rubbing alcohol and band aids.
She whimpered and hissed at each dab from the alcohol-soaked cotton ball. Gavin continued to clean her wounds and finally bandaged her up.
It’s only been two weeks in the states, and this was the first kind gesture that she had. As Gavin stood up and gathered the first aid supplies, Tamara stared up at him with glistening eyes, saying ‘Thank you’. He looked over his shoulder and nodded his head. He hurried to the bathroom, hand full of supplies, thinking of how to get her out of the apartment. He didn’t want his mom or dad coming back seeing a stranger in their apartment. As much as he wanted her to leave at that moment, he felt bad for her. He could tell that this was her first genuine experience with another kid since she moved here. After placing everything back in the bathroom, he jogged to the kitchen, got on his tippy toes, and reached for two popsicles from the freezer. Making his way back to the living room, he let out a big sigh and plopped on the couch beside Tamara, handing her a cherry flavored popsicle. She smiled at him, warmly. “Thank you”
“No prob”, he replied while peeling the wrapper off. “What’s your name?”
