Just finished watching Silver Linings Playbook finally, it’s been on my list of movies to watch for awhile now. I was looking for movies awhile ago that specifically showed bipolar or bpd although the latter is harder to find in a non stigmatising light although surprisingly as I was looking for some gifs to reblog from the movie I saw someone comment it was full of harmful and ableist stereotypes which kinda surprised me because upon watching the movie I think it handled mental illness pretty well. It showed a very specific type of Bipolar disorder that could I relate too? Not 100% but there were bits I could relate too for example the dinner scene with them both discussing medications that made me smile a little because damn if I don’t know the woes of being on drugs like seroquel. That being said he seemed to portray someone with heavier manias maybe Bipolar type 1 than necessarily what I have which is type 2 and milder manias. I don’t think his portrayal of type 1 was wrong or harmful but rather an honest look at the illness. The not having a filter thing is something I’ve personally experienced during my manic episodes and I have milder mania so..and one thing I do like is that whilst to set the scene in the beginning he was detained in the mental hospital due to a violent assault on the man his wife was cheating on and there was one very VERY brief mention of him having delusions in a meeting with his therapist neither of these were played up into harmful stereotypes. The delusion was barely mentioned it was an in passing line in his therapist appointment and never brought up or shown to us again well unless you count him sometimes hearing the song I suppose that does count but again I believe even that only happened once maybe twice in the entire movie. He was never portrayed as some violent scary threat not once and they didn’t play up on that stereotype either nor the ‘delusional crazy person’. In fact he was portrayed in my opinion as someone struggling who has been struggling for so long with undiagnosed bipolar whose now coming to grips with his very recent diagnosis. The topics on medication is very true for so many of us with the disorder his behaviours are typical of a manic episode staying up all night going into his parents room ranting about a book. I can’t count the amount of times I’d wake my parents up at odd hours when manic although for me it was usually that I had been baking and was getting them to test out my new recipes usually cakes/muffins and anything dessert based. I liked that they showed him going to therapy, struggling to make sense of things, issues with medication I don’t think anything about that was harmful or playing up on stereotypes and actually the family dynamic in all its dysfunction but ultimately love is something I could on some level relate too not any specifics that happened but in a more general context like the mothers love trying to keep things together the father not really knowing what to say or do both of them just trying their best to support their son and keep him out of being re-institutionalised.
