the thing that's got me really fucking hooked with black sails so far though is that lately i've been going man i really do enjoy splashy violence & gratuitous gore & such, but i want to see something where the violence enacted onscreen has a real and heavy weight to it. (this is of course the fault of me reading what happens next & it entirely + permanently changing my worldview) & this show fucking does! there's so much blood in this show & so far it is always a shorthand or a parallel or a metaphor or foreshadowing or five different layers of such...

The treatment of Randall plays into how Silver views himself once he becomes disabled. Randall was already disabled when the series began and we are told the crew likes him and they keep him around because his disability was caused aiding the crew. Randall can also work. When Randall has his leg amputated the crew then tries to get rid of him. They liked Randall though but they still got rid of him once he couldn’t work without aid. Silver insisting on becoming his care taker was why Randall got to stay. Silver didn’t even do this out of concern for Randall it was to save himself. We see Dr. Howell tell Randall he can’t use a crutch because it’s too much on an impediment. Randall also doesn’t use the prosthetic because it hurts him. Randall is stationary after that we only see him sitting and standing places  He can’t move freely about. Silver is treated drastically different than Randall by the crew. Silver loses his leg because he protected the crew. After Silver has become disabled the whole ship has rope rigged up to aid in movement for him. He isn’t forced to be stationary. He doesn’t even have to rely only on the prosthetic as his only aid. Dr. Howell even tells him to quit using his prosthetic so much. Silver still insists on using the prosthetic despite the pain it causes him. He’s terrified of being viewed as unable to do the work he’s supposed to do as quartermaster. Silver is flat out told that the crew will be there for him and take care of him but he views that as terrifying. He already knew he’s liked by the crew but the crew liked and cared for Randall till a point. Silver doesn’t want to reach his point because he believes then they’ll be rid of him too.

so shout out to @rougedemigods for the post that inspired this but:

randall exists as silvers cautionary tale. for the first season, he is the being who does, in fact, play the walrus crew to his advantage. he needs the crew for his safety, and the crew needs a cook. randall in and of himself is a survivalist, just like silver. then silver appears and threatens his whole position, and randall does everything in his power to be valuable over silver. eventually silver displaces him (the younger generation taking the place of the older, in a way), and randall is left with nothing. but then randall isn’t just a foil, but the ghost of who silver could become without his power. he literally loses his leg to the ship, but metaphorically he loses his leg to flint. flint who careened the walrus unsafely. flint who put the whole crew in danger. and silver sees the loss that randall deals with, he actively contributes to it, and he sees the threat that flint poses to him. then he does everything in his power to not become expendable anymore, to not be like randall. and when silver loses his leg, it’s not in spite of the crew, but because of it. to diverge from the fate that randall represents, he willingly becomes part of the crew and loses part of himself. then even after randall dies and flint loses his leg, he has this fear of being like randall. he cannot be expendable to the ship, he cannot be a liability, because that is weakness in his mind. anyway i think randall + silver parallels are neat

What about Geoffrey and Suzanna?

Suzanna and Geoffrey? One of best potential wise dang it. 

They start off as simply trying to be friends and partners but they work too well together to not be more in my opinion. Especially since they trust each other so much they tuck each other into bed! 

Anyway, one of the things I love about this ship in particular is because of how they operate. Instead of "Where's the spice?" It should be "All the Spice". While I do think these two can be very cute together, they just exude the vibe of something a bit darker and more intense. Geoffrey might look a bit innocent (and act it), but how he operates behind the scenes gives me all sorts of ideas. 

Plus there's also all of their post credit scenes in the light novel together. I love how they seem to care and know each other more and more in these instances, however, the angst is very fresh since while they care for each other, they also seem more inclined to try and do things on their own for the sake of "protecting" the other. Geoffrey's dark eyes that Suzanna points out in LN 9 is evident of him doing something else, even if Suzanna just sees it as him overworking himself. 

The only thing holding these two back is their determined plan of just keeping things as associates and friends, since both see their engagement as a good arrangement and marriage as the danger to that status quo. 

I have a feeling that while these two have great communication in regards to their work and their friendship, they suffer a lot of assumptions and miscommunications in regards to any romantic feelings they have for each other. 

They are cute when they are trying to figure out their feelings and understand that they can't handle dangerous stuff on their own. But when they fully realize it, all the spice happens. 

All of it. 

(Sidenote, they feel like the protective couple that if someone looks wrong at someone they care about, they'll slowly plan their social fallout in their heads at the same time)
