AHOY!1 AND WELCOME TO THE FIRST SHRIMPO FACTS SUNDAY!1! WHERE I (wirlbue) WILL TALK TO U ABOUT SHRIMPSSS!!! :DDD

Alright! for this shrimpo sunday we have my favorite shrimp! the Pistol Shrimp!1!!

the alphaeidae or pistol shrimp or snapping shrimp (or as i like 2 call em cowboy shrimp :] ) are a family of shrimps characterized for their asymmetrical claws, the biggest one which is capable of causing a LOUD snapping sound, *thanks to the phenomenon of cavitation!!! (mantis shrimp can also cause this phenomenon!!) that happens when the motionless pressure of a liquid (water in this case!) its below the liquid's vapor pressure that form tiny vapor filled bubbles on the liquid, when these bubble experience the higher pressure of the liquid they collapse1!! and generate shock waves (that are literally boiling water thanks to the amounts of pressure) this way being able to knock over their prey! all thanks to the mechanism on their claws!!!*

these funky guys can move its claws at an amazing speed of 97km/hr!, this species haves about 38 or moree genera, the 2 most common would be alpheus and synalpheus, with species of the number of well over 250 and 100,

Most snapping shrimp dig burrows and are common inhabitants of coral reefs, submerged seagrass flats, and oyster reefs. While most genera and species are found in tropical and temperate coastal and marine waters, Betaeus inhabits cold seas and Potamalpheops is found only in freshwater caves!

When in colonies, the snapping shrimp can interfere with sonar and under the sea communication. The shrimp are considered a major source of noise in the ocean! wich is pretty epic i think

🦐.Some pistol shrimp species share burrows with goby fish in a mutualistic symbiotic relationship. The burrow is built and tended by the pistol shrimp, and the goby provides protection by watching out for danger. When both are out of the burrow, the shrimp maintains contact with the goby using its antennae. The goby, having better vision, alerts the shrimp of danger using a characteristic tail movement, and then both retreat into the safety of the shared burrow. This association has been observed in species that inhabit coral reef habitats.

🦐.Eusocial (its the type of kinda society that ants n bees have) behavior has been discovered in the genus Synalpheus. The species Synalpheus regalis lives inside sponges in colonies that can number over 300. All of them are the offspring of a single large queen shrimp. The offspring are divided into workers who care for the young and predominantly male soldiers who protect the colony with their huge claws. (I find it very peculiar how i can't really find any information of other pistol shrimp genus that haves this cuality so this is pretty cool i think)

🦐.Pistol shrimp have the ability to reverse claws. When the snapping claw is lost, the missing limb will regenerate into a smaller claw and the original smaller appendage will grow into a new snapping claw. Laboratory research has shown that severing the nerve of the snapping claw induces the conversion of the smaller limb into a second snapping claw. The reversal of claw asymmetry in snapping shrimp is thought to be unique in nature.

Oh snap!

It’s (snapping) shrimp time, babey!!! 🔫🦐

Snapping shrimp!! Aka ‘pistol shrimp’ are all part of the family Alpheidae, which consists of over 1,100 species of these freaky little fellas!!

Snapping shrimp are one of my FAVORITE seacritters, named after their funky asymmetrical claws. Their ‘snapping claw’ is much much larger than its partner, and capable of literally shooting fish dead with a jet stream of bubbles that reaches speeds of up to 56 mph/90 km- that’s literally almost as fast as a cheetah’s top speed all in a millisecond. And not only that, but the snap produces up to 12 psi- that’s roughly the psi of one atmosphere. They use this to quite literally shoot their prey down so they can eat it. Not very love and peace of them.

The ‘snap’ is achieved using cavitation! The ‘snapping claw’s’ dactyl (the upper part of the claw that can move up and down pinchy pinchy) is specialized, the hind portion of it shaped akin to the hammer of a gun. The ‘hammer’ of the claw fits into a chamber, which fills with water when the dactyl is open. The dactyl then quickly shuts, forcing the water out of the chamber so fast it creates a cavitation bubble. While this doesn’t sound like much, this silly little shrimp with its silly little snap contests with the likes of sperm whales and belugas for the loudest animal in the ocean. The snapping shrimp’s snap can produce up to 218 decibels- not only is that louder than an actual pistol, but it would cause instantaneous and permanent hearing damage.

As for their behavior, snapping shrimp are also quite peculiar! Some species of snapping shrimp are roomies with goby fish- the shrimp building and maintaining burrows while the goby keeps watch for any impending danger. Truly, the rarest pair in the sea.

Another behavior I particularly enjoy has been observed in the genus Synalpheus, specifically in the species Synalpheus regalis. These fellers remind me of bee hives on land- a single queen shrimp spawning an entire colony of over 300 shrimpy servants who all live together in sponge colonies. The worker shrimps take care of spawn while the soldier shrimp (usually large males) protect the colony.

These idiots are literally so fucking cool. I think I’ll have to do a part two on this at some point.

The chances of getting sniped by a shrimp are low but never zero.

Rules: Share 10 facts about yourself and tag 10 other blogs! I want to get to know my mutuals, and the people I follow a little bit :) The facts can be about anything!

I love to cook, and I'm happy to try cooking anything once but I tend to favor more dessert dishes... My current all time favorite is the lemon tart recipe by "pretty.simple.sweet" but melon pan (don't know the recipe writer for this one) and a Portuguese tart recipe from my friend over there are my favorites :D

I have a betta fish named Mr Cobra Bubbles because I liked the name and he is grumpy but also incredibly sweet for a betta... he has not eaten any of my cherry shrimp cleanup crew 🦐 💜

I like to try different crafts so the doll hobby is so much fun. I love doing face-ups, re-rooting hair and creating really cool outfits! Plus seeing what other artists like dollightful and hexian come up with is so cool! It does take me a while to finish a project though

I am terrified by spiders but I hate the idea of killing them! Huntsmen in particular freak me out but I will dutifully capture them in a glass cup and put it outside (hopefully without getting said spider on me). I have captured a white tip to take outside when I was younger and told off by my auntie :( which was probably a good thing 😅

I adore birds! I don't care about species or rarity, seeing a birb out doing its thing always makes me happy! Even seagulls, their brazen thievery just makes me like them more...

My online name comes from a mlp oc I made in highschool and I have basically committed to that name ever since

My sleep schedule can be affectionately called a hot mess, I am currently trying to get to sleeping at 10pm and waking at 7ish... It was previously 3am to 11 😅

Actually my whole organisational side could be called a hot mess, I struggle to keep to a schedule and the procrastination is strong in me. It's another thing I am working on lol.

I cannot stand mint. It actively makes me nauseous as I had some minties while sick when I was younger and that association has stuck around ever since

I am almost finished with my master's degree and I still have no idea what to do next. I was contemplating a phD but I don't think I have the academic stamina for it.

My favourite food, it’s name is shrimp.

Everyone are you the kind of person that eats shrimp tails? I eat them every time (Especially on fired strimp) No matter how many of them I eat I want more and then against my better judgement I eat the whole thing and before I know it I’m eating the tail because I feel like it’ll go to waste if I don’t eat it (.. )

Yesterday Kuu-san gave me only the tail off of her fried shrimp ( ´∀`)HAHAHA

Well then, today is the Hiroshima Live 🍋

Thank you for all the wonderful flowers!

Together with all these amazing people, I’m so glad to be able to perform while surrounded by all these beautiful flowers ^ ^

Even though we said our goodbyes to Seira-chan at her graduation ceremony in Osaka, I kept thinking that it still felt like we were performing together. I’m said but I’ll write more about it later.

Dean - feels my tail getting hit making more said shrimp noises as they die as I lose consciousness

Gabe - How’d I do? taking blindfold off

Dean - dies as tranquilizer is too much
