Excerpt: “Jiang Cheng,” Wei Wuxian said, slowly. “Do you really think I… carried a child? Lan Zhan’s child?” “Who else’s child would you carry?” Jiang Chang demanded, yelling as quietly as possible. “Are you suggesting you cheated on Lan Wangji?” Wei Wuxian dropped his head into his hands. “How could I cheat on Lan Wangji?” Wei Wuxian asked. “I was never with Lan Wangji!” “You had a child with him and you weren’t even together?” Jiang Cheng demanded. “It was in a dream!” Wei Wuxian protested and then realized what he’d just said. He stood up and grabbed the toddler. “I can’t believe this,” he said. “I’ve been gone from the cultivation world for three years and everyone’s gone insane.”

i’m pretty sure this was done on the tlt subreddit once before but i haven’t seen it here and i’m curious to know tumblr’s opinions on the topic! personally i like the second two much more than the first—gtn didn’t really grab me that much and i wouldn’t have even called myself part of the fandom until i decided i might as well give htn a go and immediately got sucked in—but i’m guessing that most people’s experience is different, since the first book seems like the most popular based on the impressions i’ve gotten. also feel free to put in tags where you’d rank the short stories (as yet unsent and doctor sex) relative to the books! i would have stuck those in the poll too but there are. 120 different ways to order 5 unique objects

#personally it’s always going to be ayu >/= htn > ntn > dr sex > gtn for me #i do think that gtn might have had a chance against ntn if i had read gtn in the same mindset that i read nona (i.e. already completely 100%#obsessed with the world and characters) but there’s no way either of them could possibly hope to compete with the EXPERIENCE that is htn #and ayu is absolutely perfect for what what it is (character study of judith subtle worldbuilding exercise etc.)#like that short story more than anything else to me is where it’s clear that muir has written fanfic before because in the best possible way #ayu feels like one of those extremely high-quality 10-15k oneshot fics that you read and find your entire life permanently changed by #also the night that story leaked on this website was my destiel night so i will always have a fondness for it tied to that experience #the locked tomb #polls #if this HAS been done on here then i’m sorry and i’m not trying to steal anyone’s thunder! i just really want to know

you know it might just be that my tendency to overwrite might have something to do with the fact my chapters end up being 15k even after undergoing mitosis

#like obviously im at the point where im throwing in the kitchen sink bc well the point of this fic is if i wanna write it i do #but also like .. i once had very very short scenes and chapters like 90% were under 1k short #and i know a lot of it was that necessary detail got left out #i was underwriting then #but now i have def swung too far this way #fortunately i just write for fun so like i dont actually have to address the overwriting issue #but it is 3am and im awake so it is ponder things time #like the fact the current chapter is at like 15k and i still have at least three scenes left if not more #because the first four chapters are essentially fics in their own right #but also the chapters after the first four would feel weird if the first four chapters were to declare independence and create a series

Tkachuk holds out his arms, bare wrists up, pale skin on display in an ancient form that Leon hasn’t seen beyond pictures. Okay, perhaps it isn’t ancient, but it is not the done thing and hasn’t been in a long time - so it’s odd for someone as young as Tkachuk to do it.

Not that the sight of those vulnerable wrists, paler than the rest of Tkachuk’s skin, doesn’t awaken something in Leon. He is being given something precious, something that isn’t easy for Tkachuk to give up. Something not without risks for Tkachuk, and… It’s like Leon’s dog baring his belly to Leon, trusting him to take care of Bowie’s needs.

“Is this how you want it?” Leon has to make sure.

It earns him an eye roll. “I’ll tell you if I don’t. Can you just… Oh.”

New chapter is over 5k so far and its literally still just one long scene that has no end in sight. Why do I love writing detailed visuals and introspection? Why are my scenes for the reader and Jon, who are the more quiet characters, always the goddamn longest?

#i mean i know why #robbs internal dialogue is shown a lot more in his physical interactions with the reader so whats on his mind is usually pretty clear #whereas Jon is a lot more guarded and needs more time to open up the way a scene needs him to #boy i wish i could just write short fics that people actually wanna read #and not fucking 15k long character studies every chapter #no one wants this why do i write this way why cant i just churn out short fics everyone can easily consume

My comments: In which lwj gets a little soused, loses all his inhibitions, and gets exactly what he wants. The other chapters are from the viewpoints of wwx, jc and lqr.

Excerpt: “It did not miss my attention that there was some kind of secret Lan sect ribbon nonsense happening as well,” Jiang Cheng continued. “Or that my brother has been in your brother’s rooms all night. Poor Jiejie wept herself to sleep thinking of what abuses your brother might be laying on our poor, defenseless Xianxian.” “Actually, I slept fine,” Jiejie said. Zewu-jun’s fake smile slipped into a real one. Cute, Jiang Cheng tried really hard not to think. “Defenseless?” he asked. “Wei-gongzi? On the contrary, I think that if any two people have ever been evenly matched it is Wei-gongzi and my brother, who was, I might remind you, falling down drunk last night; hardly in a position to take advantage of a cultivator who netted over a third of the prey in yesterday’s hunt single-handedly.”
