[NEWS UPDATE] PolluSute: Live and Archive Streams of the Opening and Final Days of "Castor & Pollux" have been Announced

STORY DESCRIPTION

The year is 2045 AD. Humanity has been wiped out from the Earth due to repeated wars and environmental pollution. The people who have been left behind have made a life together in an underground shelter.

Leaning on each other, there are two brothers who live in a rundown apartment. Igarashi Souji (Fujiwara Itsuki), the older brother who is quick to get into fights but who cares for his friends, and Sho (Shinya Seiji), the kind and gentle younger sibling who writes about his life with his brother in his diary. Having been raised in the shelter since birth, they have never seen the starry night sky, and their dream is to see stars that are real.

Watching over the two brothers, the one who also taught Souji how to fight, is the junk seller Saginuma (Nakamura Seijiro). His buddies in a fight, Ichijo Kengo (Kitazono Ryo), Saruwatari Ryoto (Uekiya Satoshi) and Kijioka Kuon (Yamazaki Shogo) as well as Tsuda Yosuke (Tamura Shogo), who has a strong admiration for Souji, become the brothers' support.

Meanwhile, Shinonome Shuta (Ryu) and Rei Seiya (Sato Ryuji), members of the committee which protects the peace of the city, are marking the impoverished people who are a threat to the public order. Even amongst them, Souji, who has an overwhelming strength, catches Shuta's eye. Using despicable means, he drives the brothers into a corner...

Anime’s Glass Ceiling: what keeps women out of the director’s chair?

One of my favorite current manga is Beastars, by Itagaki Paru. A bizarre mash-up of high school soap opera, murder mystery and obsessive thought experiment on how a world populated by animals might function, it earned itself enough acclaim to garner an anime adaptation produced by Studio Orange.

Orange is the best CG studio in the anime industry, but there was one aspect of their otherwise fantastic adaptation that stood out to me, like a splinter lodged in your hand from an otherwise beautiful coffee table. While Itagaki, the creator of Beastars, is a woman, the director of the anime—Matsumi Shinichi—is a man.

The world of manga is home to many talented and successful female writers and artists. Takeuchi Naoko combined the appeal of tokusatsu drama with magical girl aesthetics to create Sailor Moon, and in doing so created a whole new kind of magical girl story that remains popular to this day. Arakawa Hiromu wrote and drew one of the best shounen comics of the 2000s with Fullmetal Alchemist, and then proved herself equally capable of easy-going slice of life stories with her farming comic Silver Spoon.

Then you have Takahashi Rumiko, who is a manga industry unto herself, with masterpieces ranging from Urusei Yatsura’s zany comedy to Maison Ikkoku’s relationship drama to Mermaid Forest’s horror; not to mention that her series Ranma ½ played a central role in introducing countless American fans to anime in the 1990s.

The popularity of these authors led to their work being adapted into similarly successful anime. But most of these anime, if not all of them, were directed by men. Sailor Moon made the careers of countless animators and creators at Toei, but the main directors—Sato Junichi, Ikuhara Kunihiko, Igarashi Takuyai—were men. The 2003 anime adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist I watched as a kid was directed by Mizushima Seiji and written by Aikawa Sho, both men. Urusei Yatsura served as the proving ground for one of anime’s most famous auteurs, Oshii Mamoru—a man.

Anime’s Glass Ceiling: what keeps women out of the director’s chair?

One of my favorite current manga is Beastars, by Itagaki Paru. A bizarre mash-up of high school soap opera, murder mystery and obsessive thought experiment on how a world populated by animals might function, it earned itself enough acclaim to garner an anime adaptation produced by Studio Orange.

Orange is the best CG studio in the anime industry, but there was one aspect of their otherwise fantastic adaptation that stood out to me, like a splinter lodged in your hand from an otherwise beautiful coffee table. While Itagaki, the creator of Beastars, is a woman, the director of the anime—Matsumi Shinichi—is a man.

The world of manga is home to many talented and successful female writers and artists. Takeuchi Naoko combined the appeal of tokusatsu drama with magical girl aesthetics to create Sailor Moon, and in doing so created a whole new kind of magical girl story that remains popular to this day. Arakawa Hiromu wrote and drew one of the best shounen comics of the 2000s with Fullmetal Alchemist, and then proved herself equally capable of easy-going slice of life stories with her farming comic Silver Spoon.

Then you have Takahashi Rumiko, who is a manga industry unto herself, with masterpieces ranging from Urusei Yatsura’s zany comedy to Maison Ikkoku’s relationship drama to Mermaid Forest’s horror; not to mention that her series Ranma ½ played a central role in introducing countless American fans to anime in the 1990s.

The popularity of these authors led to their work being adapted into similarly successful anime. But most of these anime, if not all of them, were directed by men. Sailor Moon made the careers of countless animators and creators at Toei, but the main directors—Sato Junichi, Ikuhara Kunihiko, Igarashi Takuyai—were men. The 2003 anime adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist I watched as a kid was directed by Mizushima Seiji and written by Aikawa Sho, both men. Urusei Yatsura served as the proving ground for one of anime’s most famous auteurs, Oshii Mamoru—a man.

Hideo Ishikawa Reprises His Role as Ryoma Nagare in Getter Robo Arc

    Nine days ahead of its premiere in Japan, the official website for the forthcoming TV anime adaptation of Getter Robo Arc, the final installment of the Getter Robo Saga manga series created by Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa, announced 11 additional voice cast members, including 51-year-old Hideo Ishikawa who will reprise his role as Ryoma Nagare.

  Ryoma is one of the protagonists of the original Getter Robo series, who piloted the Getter-1 (Getter Eagle), Getter Dragon, Black Getter, Shin Getter-1, and New Getter. Following Akira Kamiya, Ryoma's original voice cast in Getter Robo (1974-1975) and Getter Robo G (1975-1976), Ishikawa voiced Ryoma in Getter Robo Armageddon (1988-1989), Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo (2000-2001), and New Getter Robo (2004). It has been 17 years since he played Ryoma for the last time for an anime series (Meanwhile, he has since played Ryoma frequently for the Super Robot Wars game series).

  Ishikawa says, "It's been 17 years since 'New Getter Robo,' and I was surprised to see a new story of Getter on TV in the age of Reiwa. The first Getter was in the Showa era, the three shows after 'Armageddon' were in the Heisei era, and 'Arc' is in the Reiwa era. So the world of Getter has been connected for three generations. Once again, I think it is a great series. This is the fourth time for me to play Ryoma's character voice. I want to watch over the activities of his son Takuma, who has inherited the fate of the Getter, and the passionate battles of the new Getter team, together with all the fans."
