In the Shijo-Kawaramachi neighborhood, which is always crowded with tourists, there is a ramen shop named Mendokoro Janomeya, which has been attracting a lot of attention since it was recently selected as a Michelin Bib Gourmand.
Founded in February 2016, the store was originally located near Takasegawa River in Nishikiyacho, but closed in October 2020 and reopened in December of the same year on Kayo Koji, a slightly confusing location that requires Google Maps. It is crowded with many customers every day, mainly young people who love ramen noodles.
I had been interested in Janomeya since before it was listed in the Michelin Guide, but I could not find the right time to visit the restaurant, so I finally made my first visit in October 2023. What kind of ramen will I be served at this Michelin-starred restaurant? I was very curious…

I went to "Sarada No Mise Sancho" that I've been interested in for a long time.
Sancho is a long-established western restaurant in Kawaramachi, Kyoto (Second restaurant is in Fushimi, Kyoto).
I went there just in time for the opening time of 11:30, but there was already a line!
After waiting for about 40 minutes, finally I was able to go inside.
As soon as I opened the door, I saw chefs cooking and people enjoying their lunch🥺✨
We ordered "Terikoro Steak Lunch (Teriyaki Steak and Crab Cream Croquette) " and "Teritama Burg Lunch (Egg Teriyaki Hamburger Steak)" and extra Fried Shrimp.
Both of dishes comes with salad, rice or bread roll.
The steak meat was tender and hamburger was juicy, Fried foods were crispy🤤🤤🤤💕
The salad looked a lot, but the dressing was delicious and went well with the food, so it was gone in an istant! (You can also order a salad on a separate plate)
The restaurant is small and crowded, so it's not a relaxing atmosphere, but I really recommend you to try when you have any chance to come to Kyoto!

Celebrating the well-known and well-loved Anime Bungo Stray Dogs, Sweets Paradise are hosting a special crossover café with brand new original illustrations and goods exclusive to this collaboration. While it is possible to freely walk in and hope for a seat, they prioritize reservations, which are done through their app. This crossover event will run from 3/11/2020 to 20/12/2020 at 12 Sweets Paradise locations throughout Japan. These locations include;

---
I visited this café on the 7th of November 2020. It was my first time visiting Sweets Paradise, and while I had a bit of trouble finding it, it was a very nice looking place on the inside. A slight complaint I would have was that the location was not dedicated fully to the crossover theme, and instead had a mix of café visitors, and general people visiting for their buffet lunch and sweets. It felt a little awkward to be completely honest. You order from a list of dishes when you enter the café, and then enter them into a machine on the side in order to pay. Unfortunately your orders will arrive as they’re made, and due to this, I got both my main and dessert at practically the same time, and my drinks came when I was almost done eating completely.
As per usual, for each order you'll receive a random coaster in 2 different styles, as well as a placemat which you can take home.
Now onto the food, quite frankly I found the food beautiful with all the flowery decorations. I'm not used to seeing such pretty food, it was a bit of a shock! In the end, I ordered 'Chuya Nakahara's Sandwich' for my main dish. It was a delicious sandwich of roast beef with a strong mustard dressing that matched it perfectly! The only complaint I have is that the dish was too small! I'd love to have had another slice or two.
For dessert I ordered 'Ryunosuke Akutagawa's Chocolate Cake'. Another beautiful looking dish, with the taste to match! Chocolate cakes are one of my absolute favourites, so I knew I had to try this one, and was not disappointed!
Lastly, I ordered two drinks, 'Kenji Miyazawa's Fruit Punch Cider' & 'Akiko Yosano's Sangria (non alcoholic)'. While I don't have anything special to say about them, I found them nicely refreshing, and the fresh fruit inside were a great bonus!
All in all, while I found the atmosphere of the café to be a little off, with both café-goers and... general people both in the café, I found the food to be top notch in both flavor and beauty. The entire café had a lovely elegant feel to it, and seeing all the characters dressed up so nicely was a great bonus!

Trip to KYOTO, August 2020 - Day1 Night in Kyoto
Good Evening from surprisingly quiet Kyoto, when there are no tourists in the city. We had a walk around Ninenzaka, where the hotel is located, and then went to have dinner at Shijo-Kawaramachi.
■Bar文久
お気に入りすぎるバー。
「季の美」のジントニックをいただきながら、マスターと京都のあれやこれやをお話。
■K36 K36 | The Bar & Rooftop

RIKU’S KYOTO TRAVELS (1)
Since my 2018 trip to Japan is slowly getting closer, I started thinking back to the insane itinerary I followed last year in Kyoto and decided to share it. I 100% tried to fit too many things in one day, but it is possible if you are as insane as me.
I added some tips & explanations in case you want to follow this route yourself.
DAY 1
07:40 Take the Shinkansen (Hikari) from Shinagawa (Tokyo) to Kyoto
(Arrival in Kyoto: 10:11)
10:30 Arrive at Guesthouse (A) & drop off luggage
11:00 Walk to Yasaka Shrine (B) / Maruyama park (C)
(If you’re not staying in the area, take a train to Gion-Shijo or Kawaramachi and walk from there.) I think it’s a pretty temple and pretty park worth checking out. I originally planned to have breakfast here, but since I had visited this place on a previous trip already, I didn’t spend quite as much time here as planned. So, from here my original plan was thrown away and I started improvising, so I’m letting go of the time stamps now...
- Check out Chion-in Temple (D)
I originally planned to check out the temple and enter the hiking trail to Mt.Higashiyama park from here, but I was so far ahead of schedule, I decided to check out some other places first. So, in the end I didn’t look at the temple that much, expecting to be back later... spoiler: I didn’t come back.
- Check out Tomb of Akechi Mitsuhide (E)
Just follow the signs and you’ll find the place. Or so I thought, it was pretty hard to find, because it didn’t look quite like I expected and it was literally smashed in between houses. But yes, the signs are correct, so just follow the signs and keep your eyes open for a tiny temple and not a tomb stone.
- Find Awata Shrine (F)
I’m not sure if I had signs to follow, or I used the map on my phone. Either way, it’s not that hard to find. It’s really nice and quiet here. So, I did have a little snack here while enjoying the view.
- Enter hiking trail to Mt.Higashiyama Park (G)
Instead of walking back, I decided to enter the hiking trail from here. Although it is visible from Awata Shrine, you can’t enter it from the Shrine grounds. At least, I couldn’t, so you have to walk around to find the entrance. From there just follow the signs to “Higashiyama Sancho Park” (東山山頂公演)If you reach a fork and both paths seemingly lead to the park, just choose whichever, they go the same way and are about the same length. It should take you about 20-30 minutes to get to the park.
- Check out view from park (H)
There are two viewing points. The old one and the new one. As far as I remember, the new one isn’t free access, but the old one is free and gives you a pretty enough view of Kyoto.
- Enter trail to Kiyomizu-dera (I)
Behind the playground (or near the lookout) you’ll find the next part of the hiking trail. To make it to your next destination, just follow the signs to Kiyomizu-dera. (清水寺)If you feel like you have time to spare, take the detour going by the top of the mountain. Just follow the signs to Mt.Kiyomizu’s top. (清水山頂点)Once you’ve been there, follow the signs to the temple again. This part of the trail will probably take you 30-40 minutes.
- Check out Kiyomizu-dera (K)
Unfortunately they were doing restoration work when I came around, so I couldn’t enjoy this place in all it’s glory. But it’s pretty, the temple grounds are pretty too. I definitely recommend you go here.
- Shopping (L)
I just wandered around the shopping district outside Kiyomizu-dera until it was time to find my way back to the Guesthouse.
17:30 Return to Guest House (A) & Check-in
18:00 Take train to Fushimi Inari Shrine
Originally I planned to have dinner first, before checking out the shrine, but since I wasn’t hungry yet, I simply bought some rice balls at the convenience store outside the shrine grounds and stuffed them in my bag to eat later. Checking out this shrine completely, means climbing the mountain, so I climbed as the sun set and went down in the dark. Thankfully there are plenty of lights to light your path, so I 100% recommend you visit this place in the evening. It’s so much better than climbing during the day, when the paths are littered with people and the sun is hot. Evenings are pretty quiet, barely any people there.
- Return to Guesthouse

Thursday 26th January 2017. 14:30 Kyoto Japan.
Me and Yoshiko were talking about how ever-changing the landscape here is in Kyoto. It changes on a daily basis, not just the nature, mountains and trees but even in the city centre. On such a beautiful day like today, Kawaramachi was shining, literally. The colours, reflections, shadows were all on point.
