Inktober day 19: Plump
Yeah, I'm several days behind. Hoping to catch up this week. But I was on a hunting trip over the weekend and didn't have the time or energy to get caught up then.
I singled out this background character from HoND and named him Xavier. He's Clopin's second-in-command, and the highest ranking member of the Court of Miracles' kris (council). He's a few years older than Clopin and is his most trusted advisor and friend. He eventually succeeds Clopin as Rom baro ("big man"; chief).
In canon, he's the Rom who helps Esmeralda bring a wounded Phoebus to Notre Dame. He later helps capture Phoebus and Quasi when they enter the Court of Miracles, accusing them of trespassing. I believe he stopped Esmeralda from bringing Phoebus straight to the Court, as even though Phoebus was no longer captain of the guard, he was still not someone Xavier felt could be trusted with the knowledge of the Court's location. As Clopin's second, it's as much Xavier's job to protect the Court as it is Clopin's.
Xavier is normally a very friendly guy. He's fond of kids and has a bit of a sweet tooth. He always has a funny story for every situation. He helps keep Clopin grounded and acts as the voice of reason when Clopin's temper gets the better of him. He's a jungle gym for several of the children in the Court. He has his own family, and his children are mostly grown by the events of HoND. He has a few grandkids by the time of the sequel (which I rewrote and in which he now features prominently). When Esmeralda was young, Xavier was one of a handful of people she felt safe venting her frustrations to. He was always a good listener and had some good advice and nuggets of wisdom for her. When she's in trouble, Xavier is one of the people she feels safest falling back on. Which is why she went to him for help bringing Phoebus to a safe location.
I've made his hair a bit curlier than in canon. Romani hair types tend to have more curl than average. More Roma have hair like Esmeralda's than like Clopin's.

Senses and Other Oddly Specific Headcanons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. What does your muse smell like?
Sweet spices and fresh flowers. Esmeralda values personal hygiene, regardless of the era she lives in. In Disney verse, she learnt from the older women that hygiene plays a large part in keeping healthy. And so while she may be poor, she makes it a priority to always have soap. Soap in medieval times is usually made from olive oil, as it is commonly available. She usually purchases soap that contains minced lavender leaves or the like. Her clothes, she boils them in water with herbs and spices. In modern times, Esmeralda also uses products that are lavender-based, given that her parents now live in Aix-en-Provence and sends them to her in Paris from time to time. As a perfume however, she has one that comprises mainly roses and cinnamon.
2. What do your muse’s hands feel like?
Small and soft with lithe fingers, there is no hardness about Esmeralda's hands just like Esmeralda herself, as her fingers tend to soothe and welcome others. But one must not be disingenuous and be blind to reality either. Disney Esmeralda has coarse calluses on her palms which her modern counterpart does not, because she is constantly doing chores such as making fires, carrying buckets of water, and repairing things in the Court of Miracles.
3. What does your muse usually eat in a day?
Simple tastes for a simple soul. Disney Esmeralda eats whatever she can afford, and that usually means bread, cheese and stews / soups made of any vegetables or questionable meats that she gets when stalls have sold their best products and wish to close. In modern times, Esmeralda grew up on her mother's hearty Romani dishes with Spanish influences, such as stuffed peppers, cabbage rolls, and Spanish tortillas. After Esmeralda moved to Paris and can no longer enjoy her mother's cooking, she begins to try different French cuisine, though she mostly falls back on foods she is familiar with. She also has a sweet tooth and indulges in them at least once a week by checking out different cafes or patisseries as she walks or cycles around Paris.
4. Does your muse have a good singing voice?
Her blushes! Esmeralda is not tone-deaf and she can carry a tune, but she considers her singing mediocre at best (a less harsh critic may call her singing pleasant though nowhere near professional standard). Esmeralda does not sing in public, and has to be coaxed by friends or family to do so in private settings.
5. Does your muse have any bad habits or nervous ticks?
Unconscious mannerisms forever ingrained. Anyone who knows Esmeralda well enough will notice that her hand wanders up to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear whenever she is nervous or uncomfortable. She also speaks at a quicker pace.
6. What does your muse usually look like / wear?
Free-spirited. Esmeralda wears dresses / blouses with loose skirts, as she likes to move freely. No tight skirts for her. In Disney verse in any case, there are not many choices because she has limited belongings including clothes. In modern times, she does wear trousers / tights and she adopts elements of the Parisian style, like this. That said, one practical thing that she does which may be frowned upon by Parisians but she does not care is that she does not wear stilettos at all. Heels / pumps, yes, not stilettos. They are uncomfortable and harm the feet, and as a ballerina, Esmeralda looks after her feet.
7. Is your muse affectionate? How much? How so?
Bright affection. Esmeralda is very physically affectionate, and she shows her sheer delight by hugging those she loves or kissing their cheek or smiling sincerely. She also shows her care and interest by listening intently to what they say or through little actions such as making tea or chocolate.
8. What position does your muse sleep in?
As little space as possible. Esmeralda sleeps curled on the side, brought on by years of sleeping in that fetal position during her childhood. In Disney verse, she used to travel in a bandwagon with other children and women. In modern times, when her family was much poorer when they moved to France, they stayed in a one-room apartment and all slept on the same bed.
9. Could you hear your muse in the hallway from another room?
No. In a world where Romani are considered criminals by virtue of race, stealth is key, and Esmeralda moves with grace - and silence - along the streets of medieval Paris. In modern times, Esmeralda is also light-footed. But anger her, and you will hear her voice ring across a large space!

Hands you my Mastersona™️ (it’s just me):
Tumblr media
Commissioned art by QUEEN of Mastersonas @xviicprc
Name: Haley
Favorite servants: Gawain (aka sunshine), Chiron, Dantès, Izou
Favorite singularity: Babylonia
Some things about her:
-Likes tasks done quickly and efficiently while working.
-Doesn’t like phone calls and has hung up on Romani dozens of times for not cutting to the chase.
-Is rather blunt and honest because complex lies is too much energy and effort. Is rarely rude or cruel even with her honesty. She has accidentally hurt people before for saying truths they don’t want to hear.
-Is a vegetarian (works very well with Gawain being vegan) and has a massive sweet tooth.
-Summoned Gawain around London and married him in Babylonia (Gilgamesh officiated)
-Is cold to start but very affectionate and has a dry sense of humor.
-Has an awful sense of time so Gawain tells her what time of day it is and she tells him when it’s night.
-Has the two brain cells for her and Gawain but rarely uses them for good.
-Can’t remember names or faces but will remember if you’ve done something to her or Gawain.
-Has big tiddies and a bigger heart and Gawain loves her for both.
-Gawain and her call each other ‘sunshine’ for different cheesy reasons. (Gawain is the light of her life and she gives Gawain strength)

The Doctor and the Hunted (Solomon, Gudako, Gilgamesh, Hakuno, Mash)
She seemed to just cascade from the heavens above.
The world was filled with explosions, dirt and blood flying through the air. He could hear the screeches of the beasts they fought and the sounds of Mash screaming for Gudako to retreat so they could fight another day.
Heads turned this way and that as they attempted to rally against the large set of dragons. So accustomed to the waves of beasts and the time to maneuver and plan their attacks, their team had stood no chance against the monsters. Three sets of dragons had descended upon them, their fire turning the fertile lands to ash. The fires were needing to be dodged as they ran. The heat was oppressing them, kicking them back with vicious whipping flames.
Their talons had torn at flesh, pouring crimson to feed the eager flames nearby. Their teeth had glinted, like bitter sunlight before they would find themselves staring straight into the depths of hell itself.
Nightingale was down first.
Without their medic, things escaladed.
Gudako held onto Karna’s body, shouting in his direction, but it was impossible to move.
Not because he was trapped, but because the large selection of trees had fallen upon him and one of the sets of roots was providing his body an all too tight barrier between him and the beasts. Gilgamesh had no choice but to look up, staring at the unrelenting faces of the beasts.
Their scaled faces glinted.
Their roars shook the earth they stood upon.
Even their wings, grotesque as they were, seemed to turn the lands into a hellscape to which there didn’t seem to be much possibility for escape by his master and the other useless Chaldean servants.
“SOLOMON! FULL THROTTLE!”
A large and powerful light illuminated the skies.
Sound seemed to crash violently, leaving his ears to ring as all three beasts were thrown into that strange ethereal light. The lack of sound had him wavering, his eyes flickering to the world around him to see if anyone else could hear.
Mash had fallen.
Gudako was pressing a hand to her ear, falling against the fallen lancer she had been protecting from harm.
He turned his gaze towards the skylines again.
The two figures were drifting down, the woman holding on tight to her servant.
Their feet touched upon the land, with the woman reaching a hand out and waving it over the vision before her. With that wave, the air seemed to stir to life, humming with an energy that one would feel before a great rainstorm. Yet, it wasn’t rain that fell upon the heavens, but rather a great wind that seemed to blow the fires right out before lightly grazing the trees behind them.
“Well done,” the servant told the woman. “I will see to the servants this way. They seem to be in greater need of a medic at the moment. See if the other servant can be spared from death.”
“I’ve got it.”
She had the same voice. She had the same hair color and face and- she even had the same little run that seemed to bring her onto her tip toes despite that being a poor way to run. He could see her running towards him, his ears ringing less and less by the minute.
A hand pressed to his shoulder, her eyes looking over the roots.
“I need to get you out of there,” that very same voice declared.
“Hakuno.”
The woman paused, brushing her large braid back over her shoulder and out of her way. Those brown eyes were wider than before, looking at him in wonder.
“The trees…”
“R-right!” She jumped a little, shaking her head. “I just… no one knows me.” She pressed her hand to the tree, closing her eyes before he could see a strange red series of lines running across the bark. The very tree holding him in its protective vice was surging with power, that energy tightening and tightening before-
She covered his face a second before the damn tree burst into splinters of wood chips and misshapened chunks. He could sense them, protected against the chest and jewelry of the woman holding him. The strange designs pressed into his cheek, the thick fabrics covering him before he could be injured again.
“HAKUNO! I THOUGHT I SAID NOT TO USE THAT METHOD!”
“SORRY,” the woman shouted towards the servant she had come here with. She pulled back, hair falling forward once again.
She was different. Not much. It was just the power levels that had increased, but there was still the sheepish look on her face. The eyes that seemed to linger for a second too long as she went to help him with injuries. She still had that quiet and calming feeling to her, despite that incorrigible sweet tooth of hers.
“Your leg looks to be in bad shape,” she lamented, frowning and looking around a moment before she found one of his used blades nearby. “Ah! Perfect.”
Her robes were pulled off, the undergarments far less covering than her outer robe had been. She wrapped the fabric around and around the blade, taking the last of the fabric to press the sword against the side of his injured leg and tie it into place.
“It should be heal-“
“I’m not really a healer,” she murmured, smiling sheepishly again. Her eye contact had him fall silent, noting her words.
“Hakuno!”
The other was calling for her.
Gilgamesh shifted only to find the woman moving in compliment. He pushed against the earth, grimacing at the mud and the dirt his fingers found, but the woman didn’t leave him to dwell on it. She had him by the waist, slipping beneath his arm to help him onto his good foot.
“I’ve got him! He’s safe with me,” Hakuno called to the other.
She had this backwards.
He couldn’t take his eyes off the woman as she tugged him along, leaving him to hobble over to where Gudako was spluttering, her eyes filled with tears.
“S-So-So… Romani,” she choked out.
“It’s nice to be back, Gudako. I hope it hasn’t been too long.”
The red head threw herself at the servant, clinging to him.
Confused, Gilgamesh glanced over to Mash only to find her leaping into the hug as well. The two were blubbering away as he held onto the woman at his side and exchanged a look with Karna.
It seemed Karna was no more aware of what was going on either.
“Solomon, what’s going on?”
“They’re friends,” Solomon told her. “Long and lost, but very dear to me, master.”
“H-How?” Gudako pulled back, running her sleeve over her cheek.
“Hakuno has taken good care of me. She is considered something of a grand mage.”
“Wait! You’re-“ Gudako glanced towards the woman under his arm, the one providing him the support to stand on his feet at the moment. “You’re the grand mage that the Mage’s Association is hunting down?!”
“I-It’s a long story- And it’s Solomon’s fault too!”
The man gave a similar sheepish smile.
This felt complicated.
“We should get back to Chaldea.” Mash smiled, looking towards the strange Solomon/Romani servant. “Do you both mind joining us? As guests.”
“I still need one more healing done,” Hakuno pointed out. “I’m not leaving this man until he’s walking on his own two feet properly.”
Gudako finally looked at him.
He wanted explanations. He wanted a great number of things, but right now…
Right now the woman under his arm was clearly the master he had spoken of time and time again to the fool that had found him lost amongst the cosmos. Right now, somehow, he had Hakuno.
His fingers tightened on the woman’s person.
She was right. She would not be leaving him.
Perhaps he’d decide never to walk properly again.

a café drink: the patriot
it is no longer july fourth here but it IS still july fourth somewhere in this godforsaken country, so this is fine 🎆👀🎆
the story.
when eve was an agent, one of her favorite things to do was sample local drinks. wild coffee in yemen, romani compot, rhubarb soda wherever there was an upscale supermarket. she never grew out of her childhood sweet tooth--something about the quick, sugary burst of energy during the afternoon or midnight or 72-hour stakeout slump. she’d live on smoothies if she could, has, in fact, spent a few days here and there surviving on liquids alone, and the cocktails. when she was an agent she wasn’t allowed to be picky. some agents like bond go the other way and train themselves to savor everything, to find strange food a sensual experience, if not always a pleasant one. eve just stopped tasting things altogether. she ate whatever she could, at bars she ordered easy, generic drinks like cosmos and gins & tonics and bond’s fucking martinis, and she never, ever let her distaste show.
now, though, she’s a young woman with a disposable income and a job that (mostly) doesn’t involve killing people, and she can be self-indulgent, she can be eccentric. she discovers a particular penchant for drinks that taste like some kind of dessert. she finds a cachaça thing that tastes exactly like an orange creamsicle. she makes bond cringe when she orders martinis that come with descriptors like “lemon drop” and “key lime pie.” at one point, she drinks something that tastes more like apple pie than actual blended apple pie. she’s going to try something called a “starfucker” the next time she’s at the weird little cocktail place that’s become her local. she can’t wait.
the real story.
weird, but true: one of my closest friends--a boxer, a cutie pie, a woman with a voice of command that could freeze serial killers in their tracks--reminds me of nothing so much as a 5′2″ captain america. so this is a cocktail recipe for steve rogers on his birthday. & it’s a gift for the definition of “spunk” that peeled itself off the dictionary page and started walking around boston. guess which is which?
ingredients: easy mode.
1oz / 30ml vanilla-flavored vodka 1oz / 30ml fireball whiskey 4oz / 120ml apple juice 2oz / 60ml ginger ale 1tbsp + .5tsp / 15g granulated sugar .25tsp / 1g cinnamon ice lemon wedge for garnish
ingredients: hard mode.
.5oz / 15ml apple-flavored vodka (preferably pearl apple pie, but smirnoff green apple & ivanabitch dutch apple also acceptable) 1oz / 30ml vanilla-flavored vodka 1oz / 30ml fireball whiskey 5oz / 150ml apple juice 3oz / 90ml ginger ale 1.75tbsp / 22g vanilla sugar .25tsp / 1g cinnamon a very small pinch each of ground cloves & ground nutmeg & allspice ice honey, cinnamon sugar, lemon wedge, apple slices, & cinnamon stick for garnish
instructions.
(rim a mason jar using honey and cinnamon sugar. jauntily arrange the lemon wedge and cinnamon stick in the empty jar.)
in a cocktail shaker, combine alcohol, juice, ginger ale, (spices,) and ice. shake vigorously for thirty seconds.
pour into glass (or mason jar over the garnishes). add remaining garnishes by sticking the lemon wedge on the rim (or, if you’re making the overachiever version of this cocktail, arranging thin apple slices and dusting with cinnamon sugar).

Seduce Me at Sunrise
Tumblr media
On to book two of my Lisa Kleypas re-read-extravaganza. Wow, what a read. Or should I say re-read. Spoilers ahead for anyone browsing the tag and who hasn’t read this gem. (Really all her books are gems, imo.)
Back in the day I was obsessed with this one. It had everything I loved--brooding hero, vulnerable heroine and so much ANGST. Age has mellowed me some because I didn’t respond to the angst as much as I did ten years ago. More than anything I found myself wanting to kick the hero repeatedly.
Oh don’t get me wrong, Kev Merripen is HAWT. And smexy and tortured and protective and everything I like my hero to be. But what struck me on the the re-read was just how strong and capable Win is. She is the star of this book. I love how Kleypas takes us on this journey with Win, starting with her being weak and nearly an invalid and turns her into this take-charge, independent woman, all without sacrificing the vulnerability and compassion that makes her who she is. This heroine has a backbone of steel, an enduring, fighting spirit of a survivor. And she does not waver in her love and devotion to Merripen. She fights tooth and nail to get well so that she can have a life with him, so that she can be his wife in every way. After her fight for survival, I hate how much she has to fight his reservations for them to be together. It’s like half of her battle was getting well and then she had to come back and wage war with him too,
If Kleypas hadn’t done such a good job of showing why Kev was so tormented in both this story and Cam’s story, and of showing his utter adoration of Win, I don’t think I would like him nearly as much as I do. But Kleypas is such a talented writer that even when our hero is being an idiot and constantly (and might I also say literally! I counted at least three times he wrenched himself away from Win during a passionate moment!) pushing her away, the reader can’t help but adore him and root for him to come to his senses. He really does love Win too much. So much that he can’t see how necessary he is for her happiness. Win says it best herself...”Merripen is convinced he has nothing to give me. There’s a kind of arrogance in that, don’t you think? Deciding what I need. Disregarding my feelings.”
This book has such a Wuthering Heights feel. I love that about it, but at the same time it’s not the sort of story I want to read all the time. But the whole idea of these two people from totally different worlds, with totally different outlooks on life, being utterly in love since they were children...so sweet, so special. And you know that once all the obstacles are out of the way, they really will live happily and be devoted to each other always.
Favorite quirky/random moment: Win returning to Ramsay House and seeing the wallpaper with robins that Merripen picked out for her. (Also in that scene is mentioned the fact he washed her windows when she was sick, which was mentioned in greater detail in Mine Till Midnight.)
Things I loved:
Leo’s humor and the introduction of Miss Marks. I know I said before that I don’t like prickly heroines as much as other personality types, but these two are so hilarious as they jab each other, that I can’t help but love her. And she isn’t really bossy or prickly except for when Leo is involved and this is totally the type of woman he needs, so I’m down.
Leo’s conversation with Merripen at the jail,  where he opens up about Laura and really puts himself out there for Win’s sake. I love that vulnerability. Leo is one of my favorite Kleypas characters of all time--so many layers.
The Romany ritual of courtship, where Kev steals Win away in the middle of the night. When Kev comes to his senses, he gets it so darned right.
Cam’s joy at finding his brother. Cam might be one of the delightful heroes I’ve ever seen. He is just so easy going and good to the people he chooses. It takes Kev longer to come around, which makes it all the more special when he does. Love Kev calling him ‘phral’ for the first time. (I also love that there are three Irish half sisters out there...would be overjoyed to see their stories and get more time with our precious Hathaways!)
The little bit where Leo and Cam negotiate for a bride-price.
Favorite Moment:
There are lots of swoon-worthy moments in this book, but I can’t choose them because nothing compares to Win lighting up the wardrobe with Julian inside. This might be one of my favorite moments in a book ever. So unexpected, so funny because Leo is there with his WTF reaction and Win is just a freakin’ boss!
Favorite Line:
‘I love you for being the answer to every question my heart could ask.’-Kev thinking about Win
Scene I wish we could have seen: Kev’s thoughts after his discussion with Leo. It obviously had an impact, since the next scene involving Kev is the ritual scene. Would have loved to see his immediate reaction. Very glad for this scene because it brought healing for those two characters that was needed.
Scene I would have cut to get the above scene: Kev not claiming Win when it’s obvious to everyone she was ruined. Ugh, Kev...seriously? I’m only forgiving you for that because Win did. (I wish that whole thing had been handled another way. Like Kev had left the ball not knowing she was compromised and Julian stepped in or something. And then afterward, Kev doesn’t say anything. But for him to just stand there while it’s happening and not to do anything...so wrong. Such a betrayal to Win and their bond. Okay, maybe I’m not quite over it yet.)
Still an wonderfully sweeping read with two characters who are clearly soulmates, even if the hero is his own worst enemy at times. Kleypas puts them through the wringer but they all come out better and stronger for it.
