Will you review the Maraquan pets? I think Buzz is my favorite based on design, and there are so many really creative/punny ones. Personally, I’ve never liked Wocky.
Maraqua is probably one of Neopets' most distinct lands given that it's, you know, underwater. The idea of making a color that fits with the Atlantis-esq aesthetic just makes logical sense, and the actual designs tend to be pretty cool. I like how there's actual thought put into how [X] Neopet would function if it was adapted to life underwater, with the bubbling pit area vaguely implying it might be a natural mutation (given the amount of "painted" Maraquan pets we see in Maraqua).
Maraquan also didn't do too badly with customization, mostly because they're not compatible with normal clothing anyway so the poses are at least somewhat distinct. That said, it is weird that they changed the poses at all; they already have to have clothing drawn specifically for them, so why force things like fists onto some of them? It's so weird.
Even weirder is the seemingly arbitrary decisions regarding which ones got UC versions; Maraquan Chombys barely changed at all yet somehow got a UC, while Maraquan Zafaras changed drastically but never got a UC. What gives?
(I can't count it on the favorites list because there are too many good still-obtainable Maraquan pets, but shoutout to the unconverted Maraquan Zafara for being one of my favorite Maraquan pets. Shame it's no more.)
Favorite Species:
Gelert: While the unconverted Maraquan Zafara is my all-time favorite Maraquan pet, the Maraquan Gelert is a very close second, and is definitely my fav if we're talking pets that are still obtainable. I love Maraquan pets where the design is just abstract, taking cues from various sea creatures without being a 1:1 parallel of them, and the Gelert is particularly beautiful in this respect. It plays with the Gelert's long ears and tails by making it vaguely eel-ish—adding in a back fin, a few spots, and a lovely green and purple color scheme.
The UC version is particularly gorgeous, having this lovely flow that curves back from the head and leads straight into the curled tail. The converted version is still fine, as it's a fairly accurate recreation all things considered, but the pose is much more awkward (the body suggests an S shape, but the paws and ears are going opposite directions and the chest sticks out too much).
It does, however, at least fix the shading; for some reason the UC Maraquan Gelert has one layer of shading with no highlights or shadows to speak of, which is really weird. (See the above, which is an edit I made years ago that just adds the layers of shading that the actual UC is missing. The lineart should also probably be thinner but I digress.) Anyway, the point is that both are beautiful designs.
Uni: Maraquan Uni are also really beautiful. Similar to a Peophin (arguably too much so, but hey, there's no Maraquan Peophin at the time of writing anyway), they've swapped their legs for a tail and their wings and mane have become fins themselves, with a pretty curved horn and some subtle striping to boot. Even better, the converted version is basically the same as the old art, so there's no difficulty in obtaining one (other than the PB cost, of course).
Lutari: While there are still a lot of great abstract Maraquan designs that I love (Eyrie, Draik, etc.), I have to give a shoutout to the Lutari for being a really great design based off of an obvious animal (in this case, an axolotl). The cream and pink color scheme is lovely, and I love the subtle mottle gradients on its limbs. The multiple sets of ears forming the gills is fantastic, the tail is pretty, the black claws add contrast, and it still reads really clearly as a Lutari despite the animal influence. Really good stuff.
Least Favorite Species:
Kacheek: The Maraquan Kacheek just looks incredibly uncanny to me. The best Maraquan pets are either ambiguous or choose an animal that fits the Neopet, but here they just... took a Kacheek head and slapped it on a goldfish body??? Don't like that at all. The head in isolation isn't terrible and I could see it working on a more Kacheek-ish torso, but this... no. At least it's nicely drawn on a technical level, I suppose?

Arkley’s Alumni
For years I’ve toyed with the idea of Arkley’s Alumni, kids who successfully grew up and graduated from that hellish academy, becoming fully-trained agents and assassins for the Arkley Gang. And while I struggled on how to make this work regarding the timeline and other logistical questions… I think I have a compromise!
There’s a first and second generation of students. The first generation was pulled together some years ago, I dunno the exact number. Arkley gathered a bunch of kids, mostly orphans, within a certain age range; Not too far apart, but with some flexibility to work with, because he couldn’t always be a chooser. His teachers raise and train these kids up to adulthood, where they officially graduate. As gifts, Arkley bestows as many as possible something strange from his collection, or some weird experiment Draik and Arakchos devised; Anything to add to the armaments of these kids and make them stand out from regular humans.
These Alumni are granted automatic positions of command and authority in the Arkley Gang, as Arkley’s beloved children. Regular members of the Terror Triad aren’t sure how to feel about this, but they have no say in it regardless and have to live with it. The project proves a relative success, and vindicated by the results, Arkley allows maybe a few years before he begins work on raising the next generation.
This second generation is the one whom Lloyd, Breda, Lycan, Gene, etc., all belong to. They’ve got big shoes to fill, considering how the first generation of Alumni turned out. I think there’s a lot of potential for fun dynamics here; Like, how do the Alumni feel about this second generation, and vice-versa? Do some students admire the Alumni? Do some Alumni feel a camaraderie, a sense of kinship with this new generation?
Do some of them have mixed feelings, object to more of them being created, put through the grinder? Or do they feel bitterly entitled to see the second generation suffer at least as much as they did? It’s a generational mirror to explore; Every Alumnus is an example to our protagonists of the kind of person they’re probably gonna end up as, if things go Arkley’s way. And do they want to end up like that? Are these Alumni something to strive towards, or a cautionary tale instead?
Plus, there’s the personal stories of each Alumnus, the transition from being a student to a full-time enforcer and agent for Arkley. How do they respond to their authority over members of the Terror Triad? Do their subordinates accuse them of nepotism, or argue that since these Alumni trained and studied their whole life for this, it’s only fair? What is the relationship like between an Alumnus and a regular Triad recruit, who has a skewed idea of what life in the outside world is like; And how do the Triad members interact with these kids they’ve watched grow up and seen so many glimpses of?
Having tasted the power and life that Arkley trained them for, how many Alumni decided it was worth it, and how many only resent Arkley even more, now able to definitively declare it was for nothing? Is there any twisted gratitude, lingering anger; What exactly IS the dreaded result of this whole process, what do you end up like, what impact can we see emerge from years of conditioning?
It’s a lot to look forward to. A second generation in the shadow of the first, with a noticeable divide in age. Some of whom could act as mentors, twisted or otherwise, to these kids. Maybe one of the teachers IS an Alumnus! I’m still figuring out the timelines and ages for the teachers admittedly, and I’m not sure if it’s feasible for Trexdis to have taught the first generation, which raises the question of who was the English teacher before her? What happened to them?
I might change up the age and timeline for Trexdis, add some more years, since I like the idea of a few Alumni who fondly remember their lessons under her, and feel a sense of loyalty and gratitude as a result; So when Trexdis defects and needs allies, a few of these Alumni call upon their old experiences and decide, you know what, I’ll follow you to Hell and back. I think there’s a very sweet tale there, even if these kids were basically kidnapped; But then again, they have the choice between Trexdis, who chose to show kindness, or the Arkley Gang as a whole. So they mean it when they decide.
(That, or Trex never taught any of the Alumni and only joined after graduation; But a few did serve under her command on some missions, and that’s how they built trust together.)
Which, having said that; I really should go into the ages and timeline for the Arkley Gang, for the faculty, alumni, and students. That’s something I never really got around to, so I should get started. On another note, I guess Nick Dragomir Kajumon might be an Alumnus, then…? That’s surreal; Imagine him being made during the tenure of the first generation, and then Arkley went F it and threw Nick in with the rest of these kids. Just this giant, hulking behemoth of armor and metal, who hasn’t aged at all since he was made. Imagine Nick hanging out with (mostly) human kids as they grow up and he doesn’t, at least physically; Developmentally, mentally, I imagine Nick progressed quite a bit. How did he stick out like a sore thumb, then and now?

I just gave my Techo, Anjamin an epic makeover! Here’s how I did it:
Transformed him into a Pirate Draik via morphing potion
Used my Rainbow Fountain pass (had it for a long time) to color him Desert (for the accessories!)
Opened a Faerie Quest Fortune Cookie to get a Faerie Quest every day for 9 days and, on the fourth day (today!), gained access to the Rainbow Fountain again via a Grey Faerie quest and changed his color to Shadow!
I’m planning more outfits for him as I speak, and it’s already so much fun! 👏

Scrying my Neopets as Flight Rising Dragons Day 11: Flyro the Red Scorchio

Oh hello, these look different! Why is that? Unlike most of my Neopets, Flyro is an incarnation of an OC of mine, and I can do far better than simply copying the Neopet version. Especially because the Neopet version is incomplete.
I made Flyro with the intent on turning him Darigan. This was before Conversion. I didn't actually make the change before Conversion happened, and the Converted Darigan Scorchio is... not what I wanted. (You know, I'd almost entirely forgotten about this when considering what I would Unconvert, but Flyro's a great candidate if the Unconverter isn't too expensive. Darigan Draik takes priority, though.)
So I was left with a Neopet I didn't know what to do with, and I certainly wasn't going to Pound an OC. The most interesting thing about him is those Island Scorichio accessories, and those are only on him because I was using the side account he's on to zap Pound pets and got Island Scorchio at one point. I just put them on him because why not? When the Island Scorchio got repounded, he couldn't take them with him (or her, I don't remember).
Flyro the OC is one of my earliest OCs, thus the uncreativity of the name. He's Spyro's evil twin, and in his original incarnation he was just Spyro with red eyes, who had the goal of killing Spyro and replacing him, but was too cowardly to actually attack his brother himself. He also has no elemental abilities but can fly.
I have developed him more, though. In the main story he's in, he's trapped in the Shadow Realms (Shadow Legacy; not to be confused with where Yu-Gi-Oh villains threaten to send people) for entirely too long. Everything in there, in my headcanon, becomes corrupted, eventually transforming into those monsters you see in the game. Thus why the Sorcerer looks the way he does.
Flyro, being an evil twin, is more resistant to the transforming affects of the realm, but isn't completely immune. His scales grow darker in color, striped by dark energy, and his crests grow spikier.
Naturally, his Flight Rising form will reflect that. He's a Pearlcatcher because my Spyro fandragon is a Pearlcatcher, but he is darker in color from his Spyro counterpart. The Tiger and Noxtide represent the corruption darkening his scales, but the Underbelly is necessary to keep him with the same approximate color scheme as Spyro.

Trexdis’ Powers and Abilities
As a result of her exposure to the Mirror World’s energies, Trexdis is permanently, uncontrollably invisible. This is a passive-effect that even somewhat radiates from her body as well, so any clothing and armor she wears, or reasonably small objects she holds, will also turn invisible; So for the longest while, Trexdis could only operate completely unseen. When she eventually joined Arkley’s inner circle however, Principal Draik made sure to enchant a special set of armor and clothing just for Trexdis. This enchanted set remains visible even when Trexdis wears it, allowing her to be seen and more easily interacted with; However, she can also turn off this visibility at will.
However, due to the contact with Trexdis herself, whenever she wears her outfits, they don’t appear in reflections, don’t cast shadows, can’t be captured on film or photo, etc. When separate from her, this is no longer an issue… Initially, Draik and the others tried to work with an eternally-invisible Trexdis, but found it to be quite tiresome and frustrating, and in addition to her inevitable role interacting with entire classes of children, and the decisions for the accommodations was obvious. Trexdis, despite her true intentions to eventually betray Draik and the others, nevertheless accepted the gifts wholeheartedly. She reveled quite a while in being able to somewhat see herself; Not really, but indirectly, and it was more than she’d ever had for years.
Trexdis wears bandages around herself, as an obvious homage to H.G. Wells’ The Invisible Man… She read the book and thought it was a no-brainer to apply that kind of aesthetic, she found it supremely cool, because deep-down, Trexdis is also an utter dork and nerd herself. She doesn’t manually wind and unwind the bandages around herself, actually; What she figured out to do was put on a body-suit, wrap the bandages around THAT, and then attach them to the body-suit, so she can take off the whole thing in one piece, and re-apply it as well. It’s much more practical and efficient… And sure, Trexdis could settle for JUST the body-suit, that alone is sufficient; But it really is about that aesthetic. It’s also why her mask is covered in bandages, even though it’s a mask.
Additionally, if Trexdis concentrates and focuses, she can also extend her invisibility into larger objects, and even entire people, that she’s in physical contact with! She’s decapitated quite a few people with invisible swords, greatly surprising any witnesses and bystanders, who just see someone’s head inexplicably popping off. It also aids in kidnapping, which alas, Trexdis is more than familiar with… She’s even abducted a few kids to take into Arkley’s school as well. She’s not a fan of it by any means, and she DOES remind and justify it to herself, considering that in the end, she’ll overthrow Arkley, and devote his resources to letting the abducted kids live proper lives… Even so.
In her invisible state, Trexdis also becomes undetectable in certain other fields of vision as well; Heat scans can’t pick up her, nor X-ray scans, and even the noise and scents she gives off are diluted. Combined with extensive training, and it’s incredibly difficult to keep track of her; It’ll take indirect means of seeing her, such as checking for footprints, or changes in the air currents, if you can feel them THAT closely. Sonar is a pretty good bet as well. However, if Trexdis focuses on some of her other abilities beyond basic invisibility, she’ll become somewhat visible as a vaguely-defined distortion of light. Trexdis has tried in the past to see if she can take advantage of this, perhaps concentrating all of her energy in one place, in the hopes she becomes fully visible… But to no avail.
When touching a sufficient reflection, Trexdis can turn it into a portal into the Mirror World. She can access the Mirror World through them, and the reflections don’t even have to be that big; Her body can briefly distort into light-energy when it touches the reflection, absorbing her entire form and transporting it within the Mirror World. The Mirror World itself is a void of light and reflections, somewhat spatially parallel to the regular world, but not completely… For example, a few feet north in the regular world, is a few feet north in the Mirror World, and vice-versa.
For example, Trexdis can enter one mirror, travel a few feet in the Mirror World, and then exit the Mirror World through another mirror in the regular world! She can drop objects and even people into the Mirror World, sometimes dragging them with her for escape and transport, and sometimes as storage. If she’s in a particularly nasty mood, Trexdis can leave someone trapped in the Mirror World; Regular exposure without the medium of an Automaton Mirror causes the person to eventually dissipate, no new abilities or powers or anything… And even in such scenarios, the abilities don’t last before the body falls apart.
Trexdis can spy on others from within the Mirror World, using reflections as windows; But through these reflections, people can again see the vaguely-defined, humanoid distortion of light that alludes to Trexdis. Likewise, she can’t stay in the Mirror World for too long… She may have built up the most resistance to it out of anyone else, but it’s not an actual immunity, so Trexdis uses her Mirror Travel carefully and sparingly. In the Mirror World, Trexdis can freely float and move through, and even use it to move around objects that are also in the Mirror World as well!
Trexdis’ minor manipulation and control over the Mirror World can also allow her to access certain ‘pocket spaces’, through any reflection she chooses. These pockets in the Mirror World can store a wide variety of objects, but the space IS limited, so Trexdis has to treat it like a backpack that is small on the outside, but huge on the inside; Depending on the mission at hand, she might trade out some objects for others. Once, she made room for an entire car, just to drop it on someone after launching it from a reflection!
Objects have no issue with the Mirror World and will not distort. Arakchos has theorized that the presence of a soul within living things and people is what causes distortion; It potentially interferes with the body, which is actually made of the same type of energy that comprises the Mirror World… So when contact is made, the body begins to change and dissipate. This is all of course conjecture and hypothesis, but evidence seems to support this idea; Trexdis certainly agrees at least. Objects can be stored indefinitely in the Mirror World, even plants, because plants lack a soul… Animals, on the other hand, are not so fortunate.
Trexdis can even summon objects stored within her pocket-spaces, simply by touching a reflection; She can grab a pocket-mirror, focus, and then out comes a phone, or whatever object she desires. Unlike Trexdis, these objects of course have to be able to fit through the portals she creates, so she needs larger reflections for larger objects. To help with this, she carries a shield with a mirror surface on her back, to access the Mirror World and its pocket spaces conveniently. It’s not out of the question for her to grab a mirror and hide behind it, even as a weapon launches from its reflective surface at an opponent, and then slinks back into the Mirror World.
To facilitate her abilities, Trexdis also wields a pair of Mirror Blades; Swords who have been hollowed out and had mirrors fitted into the empty space. These specially-crafted weapons can be used to summon objects from their reflective surface, and sometimes when parrying, a weapon can be summoned to sprout from a Mirror Blade’s side and strike at a foe. Additionally, Trexdis can also concentrate and pool light energy into her Mirror Blades; Doing so causes them to burn with intense, magnified light, enabling the Mirror Blades to swiftly cut and melt through most defenses. This of course takes plenty of effort and focus, so Trexdis has to use this ability sparingly.
Not only that, but this concentrated light energy can alternatively turn her Mirror Blades into deflective surfaces, capable of completely reflecting any force or attack directed at them, at least until past a certain threshold; Sufficient force CAN break through this barrier. Nevertheless, Trexdis has deflected many projectiles, from bullets to even missiles, back at attackers; And she’s had enemies strike her blades, only for the attack to bounce back in their face. The Mirror Blades can also charge light-energy to function as blinding flashbangs. When they aren’t in use, Trexdis keeps them sheathed away on her back, where they can click and hook into place, to later be removed.
Perhaps most bizarrely of all, Trexdis can briefly split herself into parallel reflections; These reflections move in tandem of one another and can only remain separate, before they must rejoin and make Trexdis whole again. As a result, she often carefully maneuvers this ability to surround opponents, striking at them from opposite angles. Any damage a reflected half of hers take, is also felt by the other half as well; So in some ways, she’s twice as vulnerable when utilizing this ability.
Trexdis is a clever, cunning fighter who sets up traps and times her actions well; She’s tricked many foes into stumbling through a portal into the Mirror World, only to close it in on them, leaving them trapped; Or even closing the portal as they’re halfway through, bisecting them- Yuck. She takes into account her environment and will use it to her advantage, and is proficient at blind-siding others with tricks and hidden weapons or even bombs. She’s adept at hit-and-run tactics, often rushing enemies while invisible; Even if they can withstand her onslaught, Trexdis’ other abilities can quickly overwhelm foes. Often in battle, she’ll remain hidden, striking when invisible, only to occasionally reveal herself as a distortion in the light, in order to summon and use some of her more lucrative and dangerous abilities.
Even if one can keep track of her general presence, such as by sensing her soul, keeping track of Trexdis’ fast, individual movements, and her weapons, is an entirely different matter. And while she can easily hold her own in a fight, she’s often not one to fight fair, either- As an assassin, she prizes the pragmatic efficiency of fighting dirty, of surprising others through ambush. The best fight for her is ended ASAP, sometimes before it can even begin.
She’s an incredibly dangerous, powerful, and skilled individual, and will utilize her abilities to whatever lethal extent she must; But ultimately, Trexdis does have a reasonable end-goal in mind, and she’s no wanton murderer. She does what needs to be done, and usually plays it safe, but ultimately for herself and now others. Trexdis is inevitably a sentimental bleeding heart, and she doesn’t regret this one bit- It informs a lot of who she is, her values, and even the relationships that she was lucky to form.

Koialias (Koi) the male Darigan Hissi: Kabs’ lazy brother. Doesn’t do much but watch tv and complain, the other housemates have to put up w him, since Kabs pays the rent. Can be nice if he cares about you. Edgy Gay
Desalination (Sal) the female Water Lutari: Commutes to a college a little outside of the Haunted Woods. Uncertain and undeclared, but likely going to go for something to do with environmental sciences. A little awkward and easy to fluster. Lesbian
JadelynnFleetwing (Jade) the female Ghost Pteri: Some fucking child Kabs n Co stumbled upon? She’s a sweet, little girl w/o a home, and their collective sibling instincts kicked the fuck in.

Dolorophobia (Dol) the female Plushie Cybunny: Living doll, created by Xeinta’s former teacher. The two fell in love, and ran off together. She is very uncertain of her purpose in this world, but is finding joy in sewing and gardening. Xeinta is supporting her every step of the way. Bi
Bifv the female (soon to be) Halloween Ixi: A relative of Xienta, who is letting the gals stay at her large farmhouse. Rents out a couple rooms as a bed and breakfast. Kinda rough around the edges, a country gal. Currently taking some agriculture classes at a nearby college. Lesbian
