Someone's been getting too comfy around the enemy Sniper...
Not a fantastic render, but posting it to get it out of my drafts lol
It was only when he shifted that he suddenly noted the extra weight pressed against him. The quiver, along with the intruder's bag, made for an effective buffer, he reasoned, which is why he only noticed the sleeping enemy Scout when he came out of his scoping hunch. It wasn't the first time this had happened, either, which was the worst part. It meant that he'd have to work on being more alert while sniping, lest a blade be pressed up against his back rather than a rogue napper.
He turned back carefully, to not alert the enemy, of course. Scout slept peacefully, head hung in a way that'd give him an awful crick in his neck later, arms and legs crossed lazily. He breathed evenly, well and truly asleep. Now aware of his presence, Sniper noticed the heat he emanated. Sweaty, probably, tired, from running through the dry heat.
Sniper exhaled, returning slowly to his original position. It would be too cruel to shoot at an enemy while they slept. He'd blast Scout's head off when he was done with his nap.

TF2 updated so I'm taking this post out of drafts:
The TF2 Mercs are a part of the internet equivalent of the commedia dell'arte stock characters. Being automatically included in Source derivative software such as SFM and GMod, they're very easily available as premade rigs for amateur animators to use in their works. The simple, cartoony, and discernible designs make them very easy to read at any angle, which although originally used to be easily read in a competitive gaming environment, translates well to comedy skits. Unlike similar games such as Overwatch, where they're practically over-designed in a very definite artstyle, TF2 characters are lacking in accessories as a default. Generally wearing simple single color jackets, t-shirts and pants. In fact, the varied nature of TF2's cosmetic system makes them perfect as dress-up dolls, making it very easy to reuse the same base model and differentiate between them.
That brings me to their characterization. Even though most if not all have pretty well defined backstories and narratives, outlined in the supplementary media of comics and Meet the Videos, their baseline personalities can be easily transplanted into various skits and narratives with minimal introduction. Scout is a cocky jackass. Soldier is a dimwitted, overly patriotic American. Heavy is simultaneously soft-spoken and boisterous Russian who revels in violence. These simple yet understood personalities mean you can bypass proper character introductions by identifying who's in what role from the start, similar to the archetypes from the aforementioned commedia dell'arte.
You don't even have to be a fan of tf2 to grasp these roles. The ubiquity of SFM as free 3d animation software is a self supporting introduction. If you are unfamiliar with tf2's narrative, simply consuming a handful of these animations can get you up to speed.
Simultaneously, TF2's narrative is just as batshit as the fan animations that are inspired by it. You could certainly use other valve properties for similar reasons regarding animation accessibility, but TF2 embracing comedy from the start and the simple insanity of its characters means you can transport them to a wider array off stories while asking for a much smaller suspension of disbelief.
A Half Life animation is far more likely to be about Half Life than any given TF2 animation is about TF2. Many of them are, but way more are simply not.
TF2 as a property has a lot of staying power. 16 years now and even with minimal support from valve, it still soldiers on (pun intended) as a significant part of internet meme culture. I find it's notoriety akin to Hatsune Miku, where they're given a second life outside of the purpose of their original creation. They're less FPS characters, and more little dolls novice animators smack together for the entertainment of others.
And at the end of the day that's almost all it really takes. A significant slice of media engagement and fan works for the internet at large could not care less about Canon or the main narrative, even if its well regarded, because the biggest draw for many is simply taking strong personalities and putting them in funny situations. It's why incorrect quotes are absolutely everywhere despite the fact that a good 80% of them do not fit the original characters one bit. Meanwhile, TF2 as a property actively encourages it.
The following are all fan animations that have jack shit to do with each other or the original canon--be it in game, the original animations, or expanded comics--and yet they're still ultimately cohesive as these little shorts that play with the cast as archetypes, with their own recognizable appearances and roles. (Tucked behind Keep Reading to save space)

Guess who made a heavymedic au !!
Tumblr media
ME I MADE ONE
I love this and I love them **takes a big deep breath** let me tell you what this heavymedic au is
Ok So heavymedic died on the same day and same year. ( April 5th 1945 ) and after their death they turned into some monster thing medic is a demon and heavy is a bear / bull. heavy died due to an avalanche and medic died due to a landmine in World War II Medic got drafted into the World War II German axis as a Frontline medical doctor. Heavy didn't get drafted but he is a lumberjack for mann co and ships wood from Russia to America. Heavy is a bear / bull because there are a ton of bears in the Russian Mountains medic is a demon because he was a Nazi since he got drafted to the German axis. how did they die? medic died in my au because. one of his "colleagues." Was injured and called for him except. he was running across a battlefield of landmines in wwll he stepped on one it exploded he was very very severely injured and was on on fire so technically he burned to death. And how heavy died is mountain goats were screaming and he was chopping wood making it worse. an avalanche hit shoving him into a cave full of snow and ice. the only thing he can do to stay warm is a coat and after 7 hours he freeze to death.
And I have some screenshots of what I had on my notes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BTW !!!
I might make an account where I just posted about them and where you can ask them questions so
stay tuned
These are the type of ideas I get from one in the morning

After Work Hours.
this composition has been in my head for a while now (before i even made the college!soap render). i wanted to finally turn it into a render.
no heavy editing for this one. i wanted to convey the pureness these two have.
i DID edit the necktie though. turns out the necktie for ghost's suit was static (albeit togglable) so i scrambled to my collection looking for a model that had a black necktie. i found one from a policeman (a security guard from hitman 2, to be exact). the only downside was that only the tie itself was moveable - the base remained on his neck. this led me to make two renders; one with ghost's necktie toggled on, and one toggled off. i used the other one and made it so the base of the necktie connected to the one soap is holding (to make it look like he really IS holding ghost's necktie). modern problems require modern solutions, as they say.
the pose didn't take me a while to do. in fact, even without references i was able to picture out exactly what i wanted them both to do. what took me a while was figuring out where to place soap's right hand (i didn't want him to look awkward), so i settled with them holding hands to symbolize the closeness and intimacy they have together.
fun fact: this composition came to me in a dream (a lucid one at that). my subconscious might've aired to me how much i wanted to be treated like this... another story for another time tho, but i suppose that's why i was able to pose the two flawlessly without even looking at any references at all.

You bought your werewolf one of those human sized dog beds and now they won't leave it alone. They've found a way to use it while gaming, taking naps, reading, the whole nine. They love the shit out of that stupid thing- and you love them all the more. It's adorable as hell.
One day you notice small articles of your clothing are missing and find them there, tucked into the plush sides like little hidden treasures. You think nothing of it- it must be the cats doing cat things. It keeps escalating- a shirt, a pair of underwear, a small blanket. Until you leave for a couple of days on a work trip and return to your werewolf cuddled into a nest of your clothes, napping peacefully. You smile and take your shirt off and put it right next to their nose, and they snuggle their face right up to it and hug it like a teddy bear. You don't have the heart to wake them, but this does give you an idea. You know when they work, so you leave again and don't tell them you're home. You return and unpack, trailing all of your dirty laundry to the oversized bed like breadcrumbs, grab your blanket and lay naked in their new favorite spot and wait..
(part two later)

was talking about thedosian politics with some of my friends and ofc it got me thinking about my read on them, so here's my take on orlais note that this will be mostly dai-based bc that's the game i remember best, altho i've played them all, and will have nothing to do with any other da media
orlais
at its heart, orlais is about performance. nothing is sincere or straightforward - and that's by design. during wicked eyes wicked hearts (WEWH), in the winter palace, the practice is explained of hosting exuberant parties for grim/challenging events and somber ones for joyous events. explained in canon, it's about remembering the other half of the coin, but in practice, it's also about how well individuals and groups can perform.
WEWH is superficially a fun masquerade ball. but in reality, it's an effort to stop a devastating civil war, and a lot of the people attending have family caught up in the war. the people are not happy. i mean, yes, sure, some of them probably are, but many are not. they are performing happiness.
taken beyond the court, i think this performance can be seen in a lot of orlesian culture. there's always the excess. the grandeur. the respect and the poise and the self-control. self-expression appears to be conducted through a series of maneuvers and oblique references. it would not surprise me if straightforward expression was seen as tactless and perhaps a "lower-class" behavior - the kind of thing that doesn't have a place in high society, or for those wanting to become part of high society
interestingly, vivienne is pretty good evidence that people can rise above the class they were born in. a Black woman in a racist society (yes, orlais has canon anti-Black sentiments revealed in dialogue between cole and vivienne), a mage, and someone who was born poor, being able to rise not only to grand enchanter, but to court enchanter, and eventually able to become divine (as a mage!!!). her particular degree of ascension is probably safely considered an outlier, especially to divine, but her ability to navigate and utilize circumstance and to foresee the potential opportunity - and have an active role in shaping said opportunity - is a lot of what raises her in the political system. so those who are good enough at the game can end up "above their station" and it functions.
so, to me, what this implies of orlesian culture is that: 1) explicit, sincere expression is frowned upon, 2) performance is assumed, 3) seeing through the performance is also assumed, and a skill people actively work to refine, and 4) being such a good performer that people cannot see through your performance is a large part of what makes someone good at the game.
i also think a society like this would tend towards expression through the arts. and it is quite likely that soldiers are allowed to be more blunt and straightforward, which would make the military appeal to many who can't effectively play the game.

carry me home
“Where are we going?”
“Keep walking, Lil.”
“Mary, she has a point. You dragged us out of bed at two in the morning.”
“Bea, you know I love you, but just-” Mary begins, looking over at the younger woman, “Just trust me on this, okay?”
There’s a glance between the women behind her, “Okay.”
Dirt under the soles of their boots fills the silence between them as they continue up the trail. A trail lit up with Mary’s flashlight’s soft yellow glow, and she couldn’t blame them. She had shaken Beatrice awake and instructed her to change as she wiped the sleep from her eyes with her palms. Lilith was simpler. Interrupting her rosary, bearing the brunt of her infamous disapproval, and tossing a jacket at her had worked. In ten minutes, Mary had unceremoniously collected them in the courtyard and began ushering them toward the mountains of Andalusia.
//
“So, you brought us to a cliff in the middle of the night,” Lilith observes. She’s turned away from Mary, so all she can see is her outline washed in moonlight, “Can I ask why?”
“No,” Mary answers, fingers occupying themselves with a bundle of kindle. A lighter, glinting in the light, in Beatrice’s hand appears near the bundle. She takes it, nods a thank you, and flicks it open. Dried grass smolders in her hands, white smoke puffing around it. Mary gently places it underneath the various twigs.
“Did you bring us to stargaze or freeze?” Lilith has turned around, staring her down from ten feet away.
“I thought I might get some company or, at the very least, a decent conversation. Should’ve known that’d never happen with you.”
“How can I converse when the halo is still out there.”
“Oh, will you give it a rest, Lilith-”
“Enough,” Beatrice interrupts, dust rising as she sits back on the ground. Her eyes are on the growing fire. Mary watches her gaze switch between Lilith and her, “Let’s please try not to argue right now. I’m sure Mary had a reason for bringing us up here, right?”
Something deep within Mary’s chest pulls at her heart, threatening to let the tears that well in her eyes lose. Sometimes she forgets just how much of Shannon Beatrice has picked up. It almost made her forget how she had held Shannon as she shuttered her last breath. It almost makes her think she will walk up that path and offer that smile. She swallows, digging her sole into the dirt, “To mourn.”
“Shannon,” the word falls out of Beatrice's mouth, the firelight highlighting her delicate features.
Mary nods, looking up at Lilith, and she despises how small she sounds, “Sit with us, Lil, please, just for right now.”
There’s a fluidity to Lilith’s movements that have always unnerved Mary. In combat and everyday life, she has moved like a ghost. It has not changed as she moves across from Mary and sits across from her, flames building between the two.
“Why here?” Beatrice asks, leaning back on her hands, gaze gradually moving towards the stars, “It is a remarkable spot, but why?”
“It’s a place Shannon and I found,” Mary starts, dragging her heel across the dirt, “We come up here when we need a break.” Her hand finds the picture in her pocket, “It’s a place that she loved.” The picture’s edges are rough. Shannon, drenched in the snow with a snowball cocked, smiles back at her. She sighs, “She’d want us to mourn properly, and I thought of this place.”
Beatrice’s hand is heavy on her knee, “We’ll mourn her together then.”

doctors and nurses, everyone insisted, on account of the extent of damage sustained, that lee dutton should be dead but perhaps this entire ordeal is proof john dutton's been generous enough to spare some of his stubbornness and pass it on to his heirs. 'least that would prove useful. he's slowly recovering, actually, though he's been warned the process would be twice as fast if he agreed to take it easy and rest but the call of fresh air and mountain breeze is too alluring to pass on, even from his bedroom window!

at eliza's warning, his neck cranes to peer at shoulder, arm hanging in an annoying sling. ❝  ah, shit!  ❞ she's right, injury's bleeding again, crimson tainting both his bandages and a cherished plaid shirt and lee grimaces — probably more out of concern for lasting stains than the pain radiating through his shoulder. droplets of red start rolling down to the ground and he casts a troubled glance her way. ❝  you, ah. you got a hanky i could use, 'liza?  ❞
