Roman imperial portrait: The Severan Tondo (199 AD)
One of the few preserved examples of panel painting from Classical Antiquity. The panel depicts the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus with his wife Julia Domna, and their sons, both also Emperors Geta and  Caracalla. Geta's face has been removed after his murder by his brother Caracalla and the ensuing Damnatio memoriae (Condemnation of memory)
The image is an example of imperial portraits that were mass-produced to be displayed in offices and public buildings throughout the empire.
Antikensammlung Berlin. Altes Museum, Germany (Inv: 31329)
Of this family, only Geta was born in Rome (city). Septimius Severus was born in Leptis Magna (near Tripoli, Libya). His wife Julia was of Arab origin and was born in Emesa (modern Homs, Syria). Caracalla was born in Lugdunum, Gaul (modern Lyon, France)

Whitewashing no one see ( 'cause at the end Hollywood is still racist )
So, Ridley Scott really wants to do Gladiator sequel. I found it an horrible idea 'cause the story will be a new story with new charcter and new plot but finding a new title was more difficoult than using an old one, I get it.
Now, we have the cast, or the majority and... HELL NO !!!
I know, Scott ( and Hollywood in general ) never were too historically accurate so i can excuse Lucilla and adult!Lucio Vero still living, thei are a bridge between the old film and the sequel.
Ther's another problem.
Barry Keoghan was casted as Geta and Joseph Quinn as his Caracalla but ther's a problem.
They were born in England but they weren't English. Their father, Emperor Settimio Severo, was black and had berber origins, he was a Roman citizien but he wasn't Italian. Their mother, Giulia Domna, was Syrian, born in Emesa where her father was high priest.
So, how it could be possible that an African and a Syrian had two white sons?
yes, I know, it's cinema but... everyone were pissed for "black Cleopatra" but no one is pissed for "white Caracalla&white Geta" , and here we have images... only Caracalla 'cause Geta was cancelled after his brother decide to rule alone.
Tumblr media
Severan Tondo, Settimio Severo, black, Giulia Domna, Caracalla and a cancelled Geta
So, why everyone had to be pissed about a "blackwashing" and not about a "white washing"?
I really want someone respond this question 'cause I'm very curious.
Btw I can accept white!Caracalla only if I can get Caracalla/Giulia Domna... yes, this is incest, they were accused to be lovers but the Romans dind't really believed this and Geta's death for some one was not for power but for jealosy. For this gossip Domna took boot her sons as hers lover and Caracalla was so jealous about this love triangle to plot his brother/rival's death.
yes, it was a xenophobic rumors, and a racist too, oc

The Roman emperor Septimius Severus was born in Leptis Magna (Al-Khums), Lybia.
His wife, empress Julia Domna, was born in Emesa (Homs), Syria.
They started the Severan dynasty.
I suppose this is one of the reasons fascists don't study history.

What hairs would you choose to "Simprovise" a hairstyle like Julia Domna's? (I know she wore wigs, but the way she's styled in the Severan Tondo is something I'd like to have one of my Sims pull off!)
Oh dear, this is a really hard one, and the only hairstyle I’ve seen closest to the Severan Tondo is this frequently used by simctacher:

The Severan Tondo of 200 AD
When one first sees the Severan Tondo, they immediately notice the scratched out face of a young Geta. But, few know the scandalous history behind the defaced fresco.
The Roman emperor Septimius Severus (portrayed in the upper right), had two boys with Julia Domna (portrayed in the upper left.) These boys, Caracalla (lower right) and Geta (lower left) were destined to rule one day as Caracalla ruled alongside his father and brother at one point. Caracalla obtained the throne with his brother at their father’s death.
Caracalla did not wish to share this throne and decided to kill his own brother, Geta. Then, to put the final nail in the coffin, he issued the damnatio memoriae upon Geta. This entailed the removal of Geta’s likeness from all mentions or art.
The Severan Tondo is a perfect example for the history that lays upon each fresco and the story that lays behind defacement.

Gwyn’s firstborn son and real examples of political familial iconoclasm: a 4am rant
in ornstein and smough’s boss room there are pedestals holding statues of royalty. one pedestal at gwyn’s side is empty, his firstborn having been removed.
lord gwyn’s firstborn son was condemned from memory for siding with dragons. i take (paraphrase, rly) the term ‘condemned from memory’ from irl academia on roman history. the latin term damnatio memoriae, coined in 1689, refers to the roman act of 'erasing’ memory of an individual declared an enemy of the state. all depictions of condemned individuals were taken out of public image and/or attacked by the people.
this same style of iconoclasm (destroying art) can be seen in anor londo, with gwyn’s firstborn. the god of war is declared an enemy of the state, and images are removed. however, this is not outright revisionism or total erasure. the goal is not to give the impression gwyn’s firstborn never existed. rather, it is to show there WAS someone on this pedestal at lord gwyn’s side, but they fucked up and now they’re gone. the preservation of empty space turns that pedestal into a propaganda piece.
on the right, i’ve included a real example of this kind of thing from the romans. this is the severan tondo, an egg tempera on wood painting from roman-period egypt. it is the only known surviving painting of a roman emperor, so obviously it was actively preserved at the time. however, someone was condemned here. the scrubbed out face was geta severus, condemned by his brother caracalla severus on the right. the severan tondo is a great example of damnatio memoriae and political iconoclasm, because it perfectly and dramatically showcases that preservation of empty space.
somewhere in wider anor londo, i bet there’s paintings of gwyn’s family with the god of war’s face blotted out, but his body still clear so that everyone knows who it was and what happened. i bet there’s plaques and engravings erased and left blank, and statues with no hands and mutilated faces.
i have no real point to make with this text?? i just find the usage of iconoclasm, condemnation of memory and preservation of void really interesting in a video game. it really helps dark souls to feel real, and like it’s full of real, vibrant history.

Week 6
Week 6 of my time here at the Chrysler has come and gone. This week has been filled with looking through archives and researching some artist that I did not even know existed. I spent my day Tuesday delving deeper into the archives in an attempt to truly discover the scope of the Chrysler’s Virginian daguerreotype collection. The museum actually has several daguerreotypes that were either made in Virginia or depict Virginia citizens, and a great bulk of them come from a recent gift of 36 daguerreotypes all of which are made in Virginia! This acquisition is especially exciting because these daguerreotypes will help form the bulk of the items to show in a new exhibition. One of the daguerreotypes is especially interesting because it looks as though someone has erased a third figure by rubbing the metal plate. When Seth showed me this photo I was amazed, I wondered what the person in the photo had to have done to the family to warrant getting erased permanently. The act of erasing the third figure in the daguerreotype is called Damnatio memoriae. The practice dates back for centuries and was heavily practiced by the Roman Senate as a way punish those who discredit the Roman State. The most famous example can be seen on the Severan Tondo, a painting that once depicted the Septimius Severus, his wife Julia Domna, and his two sons Geta and Caracalla. The face of Geta was erased sometime after 211 A.D. when he was murdered by Caracalla. A more pop culture-centric example of Damnatio memoriae can be seen in the Harry Potter series when Harry views the Black Family tapestry and asks Sirius why there are so many burn marks. The burn marks are Sirius’ mom’s version of Damnatio memoriae. Wednesday and Thursday I shifted gears to work with my other boss Kim. Kim is the Modern and Contemporary curator at the Chrysler and she is in the process of accessing the museum’s Modern and Contemporary collection. She wants to access the collection because she plans on reinstalling the galleries someday as well as locate and fill gaps in the collection. In order to find out what is in the Chrysler’s collection and to identify gaps Kim had me go through every object and note the artist, the artist’s geography (so where he/she is from and/or worked), the artist’s gender and ethnicity, and  the objects date. One of Kim’s main goals is to increase the diversity of the collections. Currently our collection is made of primarily white American males, and Kim wants to acquisition more works by female artist, Hispanic artist, African American artist, and artist typically thought of as originating from “Eastern” countries. While looking through the collection I discovered some really interesting artist and discovered that we have some pretty big names at the Chrysler such as Piet Mondrian! Today (Friday) will be spent in morning meetings and an afternoon at a collector’s house. Seth and I will be heading to a local collector’s house to look at his photography collection in the hopes of doing a future show with what he has!
