Could you talk about your relationship with Seung-Gil a bit?
Sure!
So, I broke up with Isabella in the early 2017. I knew I wanted to explore my sexuality, though I had no one in mind at the time. I’m not sure how things with Seung-gil happened. We hadn’t talked much before - he’s not much of a talker, period. But somehow, we did. I remember thinking it was kind of weird at first.
We got together, officially, in the late summer, but it was kind of.. unofficial before then. It was one of those things where... one day you’re just talking, and the next day you’re talking, you know what I mean? Things were never bad, but it felt like everything was against us from the start.
His life is in Korea. My life is in Canada. It was... never going to work. When we were together, things were great, but those times were few and far between, even during the summer. What some people don’t understand is that, you hear “break”, we hear “okay one season over, let’s prep for the next one”. Neither of us was ever going to give up our lives for each other.
We held on for a long time, and in the late summer of 2019, we finally just admitted that it was never going to work, and putting ourselves through this was just stupid. So we broke up. Isabella and I got back together a few months later, and I re-proposed during New Years'.

A morning, one of many, when all Seung-gil wanted was silence. Just a small bubble of silence where he could enjoy the warmth of Jean’s body wrapped around his, and the soft breaths that ghosted over his skin.
But there was no respite for him. Not when he lived on borrowed time. Because happiness was transient, emotions were frail, and duty was inevitable.
And Seung-gil would eventually have to make a choice.

Sometimes I see the notion that the reason people ship so many non-canon m/m pairings is because we’re desperate for representation. That, if we had canon mlm relationships in media, we wouldn’t need to ship characters that are “clearly just friends!”
But here’s a fact:
In the Yuri!!! On Ice fandom, my favorite pairing is Jean Jacques Leroy x Seung-gil Lee.
To be clear:
Yuri!!! On Ice has a canonically mlm couple. You can argue about explicitness all you like, but Viktor Nikiforov and Katsuki Yuuri are intended as romantic interests. It’s not subtle.
If that weren’t enough, many would argue that Otabek Altin x Yuri Plisetsky is implied/intended.
I have my representation.
And yet.
My favorite pairing remains Jean Jacques Leroy x Seung-gil Lee. A man engaged to a woman and a minor character characterized by his disinterest in getting along with others.
Why?
Do I think Viktuuri and OtaYuri are boring? No. I ship them, too.
Do I hate Isabella Yang, JJ’s fiancee? No, I in fact adore her. She’s a wonderful and supportive partner.
So why?
It’s simple.
I like it.
It has nothing to do with representation.
I just like the dynamic. Two of my favorite characters. An unwaveringly friendly and charitable neurodivergent man and a cold, seemingly unfeeling man that rejects invitations of friendship and gets annoyed with flirty women. They canonically shared a coach for a brief period, and thus have history. The stageplay establishes Seung-gil as the kind of gay guy that’s attracted to spoken-for men. It also shows him as a clingy, touchy-feely drunk.
The image to me, of Seung-gil Lee, this man who holds himself so highly and apart from others, falling for the warmest person around, is simply the most attractive dynamic for me.
Because it has nothing to do with representation, I’m not trying to meet a quota. I’m not a dog that will chew any old bone. I have tastes, preferences, an imagination.
You can give us a dozen canon gays in every piece of media from today onward, and you’ll still end up pulling out your hair over people shipping characters you scream to the heavens about being “just friends!!”.
You can die on the hill about how it’s so important to protect the sanctity of platonic male friendships if want, but people are still going to ship things based on dynamic, interest, chemistry, shared pasts, shared dreams, shared futures, or even just the ever-shallow, but ever-valid, “I think it’s hot”.
Representation won’t make people stop shipping your favorite bromance as a romance. We aren’t here for numbers. We’re here to enjoy ourselves. Shipping isn’t activism, we don’t do it because we need rep or we’ll starve without it. It’s just for fun.
But hey, by all means, give me canon mlm pairs too. I’ll happily ship them, provided they have chemistry.
Right there beside Jean Jacques Leroy x Seung-gil Lee. And Tsukishima Kei x Yamaguchi Tadashi. And all the male friendships. And rivalries. And even male characters that don’t so much as exist in the same story, let alone interact.
Because I ship for fun, not rep.
