so uh. for anyone still looking at using cohost. they shared their March financial update.

they are, at best, four weeks from closing up shop and ceasing to exist. They may not be able to get emergency funding from their benefactor who they've been out of contact with for a while in time, and even if they do it just delays the inevitable.

Centralized social media is inherently expensive. Especially developing the software from scratch, and extra especially when one of your main devs is working on a different but mildly related project meant to be a better version of patreon and kofi. A good idea, but like.

you can barely develop and work on ONE platform to make it break even.

anyways. despite it's promise I cannot even think about suggesting cohost as an option. They've been in this "oh my god we're running out of money" situation for MONTHS now, this isn't a new "oh shit sudden expense" time. If they can't get money now, it's joever for cohost and ASSC.

#which SUCKS because I admire what they were trying to do #unfortunately they're inevitably proving a point: spinning up a new social media is so expensive that you have to exploit users #be it advertising or selling data #unless you want to get paid barely what your role is worth #personally I hate how much they dissed on volunteer labor (re: the fediverse) in their March financial update post #like. do they not know how the old web was funded? it was passion projects. done for the sake of hosting.#maybe they ran ads but ads then weren't garbage like today #(and even then user submitted ads are always an option)#the fediverse is generally run like the old web. but if the old web could talk to other parts.#volunteer run. paid for as a passion project. donations jars to help cover costs & as a nicety #if I ever run one for a community I'd only want to open up a donation box under very specific needs #and to see cohost be so dismissive of fedi as a concept just felt wrong.#it felt like a disrespect to the old web. to how we used to do things.#cohost fundamentally relied on the good grace of their proprietor to exist.

#spn 14x10 #kill your own desires to prioritize raising and supporting everyone else - the script underlined this in a way the shot version did not #dean’s bar was like when the housebound parent breaks out of expectations to have something of their own #yeah dean loves kitchens but ofc dean doesn’t find the kitchen to be a respite as much as others bc the kitchen is at its core more work #ergo the kitchen is not wholly escapist or relaxing #the caretaker will not find quite the same respite in the home although they ofc love and labor with that love #he’s having a hallmark parent moment - reaching for something nice something of his own #dean keeps the kitchen nice for everyone else but the bar represents an actual career #he’s failing ofc and the scooby doo villain wants him to sell out so it's not perfection he won't allow himself that #it's not HAPPINESS it's merely contentedness as au michael said since happiness would tick dean's danger meter #of note - dean doesn’t conceptualize the kitchen as cas does in season 11 - it's not pure escapism for him #for cas the kitchen is *void* of duty - somewhere he can relax and watch tv without expectations to do any work - he gets to bask #after coming home FROM work but escapism WILL look different for the keepers of the kitchen #vampires can mean so many things in SPN - here it's hunger #usually it's perfection and black-and-white thinking as AU michael remarks in 13x01 #occasionally it's a devolution to pure tribalism - that family is only blood - as in season 15

girl scout cookies are like a weapon of mass destruction when it comes to marketing. cheap delicious cookies sold by cute little girls in adorable matching uniforms that you'll feel like a monster for saying no to, has ties with dozens of charities, brand recognition off the charts, girl scout cookie season is such a widely anticipated for drop. they have vegan and gluten free options. they even have card readers on their phone now so you cant even say "oh sorry i dont have cash on me". its PEAK americana. can you imagine the damage they could do if their funding went to like weapons development or something.

how "No one would work these jobs if they didn't have to" mfs look when wide-eyed kids at the library and target and McDonald's and construction site come at them

A thing that kinda grinds my gears when it comes up- if someone asks how much it costs to get into a game, answers like 'oh you can just proxy everything in cardboard' or 'if you 3d print its basically free' are deeply unhelpful responses. Yes, I realize I can spend less money by not giving it to James Workshop or whoever, I'm asking because I want to know how much time/money I need to invest to start playing the 'proper' way and then make a judgement about whether or not I want to actually do that orput my energy into cheaper ways to play.
