TVB KING & QUEEN WINNERS 2020
LMAO. Man my predictions were wrong. Never did I think Sisley Choi would actually win. I thought at most she’d win in Malaysia or get Favourite Character award again. Also I had no idea Vincent Wong would actually win this year again. Nevermind the fact he won the most awards.
Okay, so I know Sisley is getting a lot of hate from Hong Kong locals for her win. First, of all. Don’t blame her, blame management for making such a DUMB move again. They really did not learn from 2017 when she won Favourite Character. I’m always surprised by how much TVB likes her. She’s a rumour magnet (not her fault she just has a very outgoing personality). She technically lied about her education. And the local audiences in general don’t like her compared to past Miss HK winners. BUT. You have to give credit when it’s due & it’s the fact she has made immense improvements in her acting. Unfortunately TVB pushed her way too hard in dramas. People who support Sisley are mostly oversea fans. Who shows high favouritism. I remember how she was the most hated actress that TVB was promoting at the time. I’ve seen arguments like “TVB decided to give it to someone that actually had the best performance this year”. The thing is, I agree Mandy Wong didn’t perform well this year. But if we really give it based on “best performance”. Sisley still shouldn’t have won. She improved a lot in Legal Mavericks 2 & Line Walker 3 but it wasn’t anything impressive. People say she was amazing in LW3 but her screentime was reduced after episode 21. Her character was no longer important. And I mention that cause when Mandy was in that drama people praised her in the beginning especially at the elevator scene. And then everything went downhill for her too. So simply put I feel like they both gave similar performances. If we actually go by who acted the best Mandy Lam was super well liked & praised for her portrayal in Come Home Love: Lo & Behold. I know people found Selena Lee boring in Forensic Heroes 4, but the fact remains in she gave an amazing performance. People said she was able to speak clearly & pronounced forensic jargon smoothly & believable. Ali Lee resonated with audiences in Death By Zero. She was hilarious as Cash and people found her very memorable there. These actresses didn’t have “outstanding” acting this year either but they are lot more deserving then Sisleys role. Despite me liking Legal Mavericks 2, it did poorly ratings wise & it was barely talked about. Getting lots of votes from Mainlanders doesn’t mean much. Those votes can be faked & adding on to the fact LW3 aired in China which gives her an unfair advantage. So really. No Sisley didn’t win cause of her acting. She won due to TVB politics. Even when she received the award she didn’t look shocked or touched. I think it’s cause she knows deep down she shouldn’t be getting this & also cause she knows the amount of hate that is gonna get thrown her way now. People need to understand that Sisley has only been in the industry for 7 years. And in those 7 years she never had it bad. She’s always been leading in dramas or put into grand production. She never had to rough it like Nancy Wu, Tavia Yeung, Kristal Tin or even pageant winners like Myolie Wu etc did. She was given lots of opportunities and won so quick. Hence why she wasn’t emotional when she won. Which is not her fault. She has what it takes to be an actress & I am still looking forward to her future dramas. I just wished TVB didn’t have to be like this and promote her this way. She’s gonna continue to get unnecessary hate from this. And since she only won 7 years in, I can see her winning again for a second time in the near future. She has a long contract left & with the lack of talent at TVB it’s highly plausible. But I know one thing for sure, is when she does win it for the second time it will be deserving.
Vincent Wong has thoroughly confused me. He won so many awards. Best Actor & Best Drama in Malaysia & Hong Kong & Best Partnership. It was so awkward when he thanked Al Cappucino instead of Legal Mavericks 2. I wonder if he got confused or believes he should’ve won for Al Cappucino instead? Either way, I did not see this coming. I really thought Raymond Lam or Lau Dan. Vincent is an amazing actor but to win for Legal Mavericks 2? The same role he won for the first time? It makes it seem like he has no acting range. Since he has left TVB for Shaw, I believed TVB wouldn’t treat him so well still. Bosco Wong & Ron Ng also signed with Shaw and didn’t even get half the treatment he got. He’s also starting to focus more in the Mainland China market. And has vocally expressed it too. Is this TVBs way of guilting him to film more with them? He also did not have the best performance of the year. That would go to Wayne Lai & Moses Chan from Death By Zero. When that aired people were talking non stop about it. Eddie Cheung also killed it as a villian in Of Greeds and Ants. I feel like the winners won only cause they got recent bias from how their dramas are still fresh in their minds. Forensic Heroes 4 though was really badly written got the highest ratings & were not mentioned at all. Death By Zero was of course shafted. I guess TVB didn’t want Wayne to win a 4th time. And Moses doesn’t care about awards anymore so they didn’t bother with him sadly. Vincent works hard and is a good actor but I feel like he shouldn’t have won this year at all. Like I always knew Vincent was gonna win again but I didn’t think it was gonna be so soon. This year for Best Actor & Actress TVB only gave it to those they wanted & not to those who deserved it. I’m still confused on what even happened or what TVB was thinking though. At least Vincent winning won’t be as controversial compared to Sisley but I still feel like it was very unnecessary of them to do.
Side opinions but... SUPER HAPPY Angel Chiang won Most Improved. It’s been soooo long since someone deserving actually won it. Like it got to the point that Most Improved became more of a Miss Hong Kong award judging by how much won it in the past. Angel Chiang has shown major improvements & this award belonged to her. I also thought Winki Lai winning was also nice. Her acting is great & has always worked so hard. Yoyo Chen was also another actress I wouldn’t mind winning. Brian Chu winning isn’t bad but shocked they didn’t give it to Brian Tse or Joey Law since TVB seems to be more interested in promoting them. Also glad Hubert Wu won for the song portion. Hana Kuk keeps winning and it’s gets annoying. Obviously Hana is winning if TVB keeps assigning songs only to her. I feel like Best Partnership should be given to Priscilla Wong, Shiga Lin & Yoyo Chen. When Life After Death was airing everyone was in love with their friendship. It’s also so hard for TVB writers to be able to to write such a great friendship between woman. It’s always about bromance and womance is ignored. Their strong loyal ship between each other was amazing in that drama. And I hate how this drama was also ignored in the awards show. It looks like Sisley Choi winning is gonna go down in history along with Natalie Tong for worst BA winners. Vincent Wong might also go down as the “randomness winner” along with Wayne Lai when he won for the 3rd time in Forensic Heroes 3.

The Call
Once again, it has been such a long time since I posted anything. I had this idea in my head for a while, and finally I wrote it down. I hope you like it!
...
“You okay buddy?” Carl asked worriedly as he entered the room. He received no reply.
Justin was placed in a chair with his elbows on his knees, both hands cupping his face and covering his swollen eyes that were sore from crying. He had his eyes closed as his mind raced, a million uncontrollable thoughts making him feel dizzy. He had gotten the news 30 minutes earlier that his ex girlfriend, Selena, had been through a kidney transplant over the summer. He had been left in the room by himself to collect his thoughts. But somehow he didn’t seem to be able to do so.
“Justin…” Carl sighed, sitting down on a chair next to the young man.
“Why didn’t she tell me?” Justin finally responded sternly, still not moving any part of his body.
“You know, you two haven’t spoken in a while. I don’t think she would’ve known how to tell you,” he spoke gently.
“I know…” Justin started. “But I just... I had always thought that if something major happened in our lives, we would let the other one know,” he continued as he finally changed position, revealing his vulnerable expression to his good friend and mentor, Carl, put a hand on his knee, patting it a few times in comfort.
“Sometimes it isn’t that easy. She has a new boyfriend too…” Carl trailed off, feeling the need to mention it but not wanting to get further into the subject.
“That shit is still weird to me,” Justin shook his head, looking away from Carl and into the ground once again.
“You really still love you,” Carl stated, needing no confirmation.
“I’m gonna give her a call,” Justin declared, taking his friend by surprise. As he got up from the chair to grab his phone, Carl eyed the young man, carefully considering his answer.
“Just be careful, dude. It’s been a while and she might get a bit overwhelmed. Don’t be mad at her.”
.
.
.
“Hello?” the angelic voice spoke on the other end of the line. It all suddenly became scarily real for the young man.
“Hey Selena. It’s Justin,” he responded nervously, his stomach clutching as he was waiting for her reaction to his call. He took a deep, shaky breath.
“Hi,” Selena whispered, taken by surprise. In the back of her mind she had hoped for Justin to reach out to her after she had announced her surgery, but she had pushed away the thought.
“Are you alright?” Justin started, getting straight to what was on his mind.
“Yes,” she started. “I’m good. It’s good to hear your voice, it’s been a while,” she continued, her voice soft and slightly hesitant.
“Yeah. It has,” Justin agreed. “I’m happy to hear you are okay. That’s really what I needed to know,” Justin stated, nervously scratching the back of his neck. This was possibly the most nervous he had ever been while talking to his ex girlfriend.
“You’re sweet,” Selena smiled, looking down at her feet as she felt a wave of longing wash over her.
“But like, are you really all good?” he asked, needing to hear her say it one more time.
“Yes Justin,” she confirmed with a small giggle. “The surgery has made my health so much better, it’s such a relief.”
“That’s amazing. I am so happy for you,” Justin spoke warm-heartedly as his mind was still racing with questions.
“How are you?” Selena changed the subject, wanting to know if the boy who used to be her everything was still doing well.
“I’m great. In a really good place,” he uttered honestly.
“That’s great Justin. That makes me happy,” she answered sincerely.
“Yeah, I’m doing really well, happier than I’ve been for a while” the blonde boy expressed. “But I mean, what I have been going through is nothing compared to you.”
“Don’t say that,” Selena replied. “You went through so much too. I’m just relieved we are both happy. It makes me happy,” she spoke in a clear and honest tone.
“Me too,” Justin agreed. “So…” he trailed off, pausing for a moment. “What about you and Abel, are you guys good?” he hesitated, not really sure how to approach the topic, or if he wanted to hear her talk about it.
“We’re okay,” she mumbled, rearranging herself uncomfortably in the lounge chair she was currently placed in.
“Okay…” Justin spoke unsurely.
“Well… Actually it’s not going so well,” she revealed, wanting him to know the truth.
“I’m sorry.” Justin answered as he thought about what to say next. “You know I’m here right? Like if you just need to talk,” he promised, making Selena’s heart flutter.
“I know,” she breathed. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Good,” he replied, feeling content.
“Thank you for calling me. I know it must’ve been hard for you reading about it online…” she trailed off, guilt filling her body.
“You have no idea,” Justin sighed as he had to control himself to not tear up again.
“I’m so sorry,” Selena apologized as she noticed the pain in his voice.
“It’s okay. It was tough but I understand,” he comforted, doing his best to look at the situation from her perspective. “I’m just glad you’re okay, that’s all that matters to me.”
“I really am. Thank you for understanding,” she spoke.
“Of course sweetheart,” he responded gently, his words taking the young actress by surprise but making her miss his presence.
“I missed talking to you,” she stated bravely. “I will call you back soon so we can catch up a bit more.”
“Good, I miss you,” Justin confessed.
“I miss you too,” Selena echoed with sadness in her voice.
“Take care, alright?” Justin ordered. He didn’t really want the conversation to end, but he knew that it was what was best right now.
“I will. Talk to you soon,” Selena uttered before they finished their goodbyes. She started taking in their conversation and all his words, and she felt her stomach twisting and her mind racing with all kinds of thoughts and emotions. Talking to Justin had felt so right, but she was in a relationship and couldn’t help but feel guilty about what had just happened. At the same time, these past months had taught her that she should make the decisions that felt right to her, and only her. In the back of her mind she knew what to do

Ariana Grande’s actions prove her heart is full of genuine love for the world.
Ariana Grande’s actions prove her heart is full of genuine love for the world.
Tumblr media
When you hear the word Hollywood, what comes to mind? Could it be fame, money, luxurious lifestyles and their influence?
Honestly, there is no right or wrong answer. Hollywood is filled with positive and negative influences, it’s not a secret.
That’s why celebrities who are positive examples are so important to the industry. In fact, if you think about it, you can compare this to your own workplace. There are always positive people and those who are difficult.
True charity is the desire to be useful to others with no thought of recompense. – Emanuel Swedenborg
Hollywood is filled with positive influences including Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Mac Miller, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Kesha, Selena Gomez.
In fact, each of these artists took the time to share their own battles in an effort to help others in the world.
For example, when the Manchester attack happened, which killed 22 concertgoers and injured more than 500 other individuals.
Grande couldn’t sleep without giving back and helping those in need. And what she did next was absolutely beautiful.
The Manchester Attack
After the Manchester attack, Ariana Grande felt sad. I mean, can you imagine how it would feel to have one of your events crashed by evil terrorists? As a human being, I can only imagine the pain and heartache she felt for those who were in attendance.
To further illustrate, she took to social media to share her emotions.
“My heart, prayers and deepest condolences are with the victims of the Manchester Attack and their loved ones.
There is nothing I or anyone can do to take away the pain you are feeling or to make this better.
However, I extend my hand and heart and everything I possibly can give to you and yours, should you want or need my help in any way.
The only thing we can do now is choose how we let this affect us and how we live our lives from here on out.
I have been thinking of my fans and of you all, non-stop over the past week. The way you have handled all of this has been more inspiring and made me more proud than you’ll ever know.
The compassion, kindness, love, strength, and oneness that you’ve shown one another this past week is the exact opposite of the heinous intentions it must take to pull off something as evil as what happened Monday.
YOU are the opposite.
I am sorry for the pain and fear that you must be feeling and for the trauma that you, too, must be experiencing.
We will never be able to understand why events like this take place because it is not in our nature, which is why we shouldn’t recoil.”
– Ariana Grande
As a result of the attack, Ariana Grande and her manager Scooter Braun put their heads together to make a positive difference. The time had come to show these terrorists they cannot stop love, they cannot stop us from gathering, celebrating music and showing compassion for one another, they will never win.
The gorgeous 25-year-old singer worked hard to pull together The One Love Manchester benefit concert and it was perfect beyond, leaving many feeling empathies, love, acceptance and kindness for one another.
Beauty comes in many shapes and sizes. And Ariana Grande? Well, she’s just one of the many beautiful things we got to witness during the Manchester benefit concert.
The classy lady was joined by many other high-profile talent including Justin Bieber, Mac Miller, Ariana Grande, the Black Eyed Peas, Coldplay, Miley Cyrus, Marcus Mumford, Niall Horan, Little Mix, Katy Perry, Take That, Imogen Heap, Pharrell Williams, Robbie Williams, and Liam Gallagher.
Ariana Grande is a positive influence for so many people, including those who were fans during her “Victorious,” television series days.
One fan told PCG how he stumbled upon Ariana Grande and how she has influenced his life.
“In 2010, during the height of my prolonged unemployment, I stumbled onto Victorious. Yes, the show is geared toward children, however, the simplicity of a television program was a necessary distraction from falling into emotional despair. The adorable actress with the red hair caught my attention. She role-played her character so well that it brightened my mood. You just had to keep on rooting for her.”
Another fan Jess Morgan opened up about the tragedy. She said:
“These past few weeks have been tough for every single person! When I first heard about what happened at Ariana Grande’s concert, I was shocked. I didn’t want to believe it! Hearing the passing of the incredible people and the injured was terrifying. Ariana and her team did absolutely amazing and their response was outstanding. I heard what she planned to do which she offered to pay for the funeral and doing a benefit concert. Honestly, she is brave and fearless. She gathered numerous artists together on one stage and fans come from all over the world to come together to celebrate the lives of the people who sadly passed away! The way she and her team did this was brilliant as at the concert you could not sent fear anywhere it was all filled with love and braveness! When everyone sang especially Ariana you could tell the passion she was giving. She has coped so so well during this tough time! She deserves everything she is an inspiration to young teens. I love her so so much

A fan who can be found on Twitter, shared how he first learned about Ariana Grande.
“A few years passed and I later learned that she came out with an album (This sounds awkward), but her music is cheerful. Being an actress and singer are two entities, yet it was pleasant that she was not typecast.
It was natural for me to still be in her fan base since she helped me during a difficult period. As a guy in his now mid-30s, it is a bit frightening to acknowledge how I initially found out about Ariana Grande.
The prejudice and stereotypes usual pop out. Her duet with the Weeknd, definitely highlighted that she was able to break free from that teenybopper image.
Side-to-Side and Focus music videos depict her as the confident, kick-ass woman.”
He also gained more admiration for the singer after the Manchester benefit concert.
“I admired her for returning across the Atlantic. Adding “I cannot think of other entertainers that would have done what she did. imagined other people might have easily stopped touring, just briefly. Yet, she did it. She is not this diva character that the media tends to categorize her as.” He continued. “Entertainment is always a distraction from reality. She wanted that locality a moment to relax. Also, it might show that she too needed comfort or closure by returning.”
Scooter Braun (Ariana Grande’s manager) opened up about the event when he walked onto the One Love Manchester benefit concert stage.

“To my friend Ariana Grande and the entire Dangerous Woman crew, myself and all of us around the world are so grateful for you for stepping up and taking action. We also want to thank the Manchester first responders and all the bystanders who are probably here tonight, who risk their lives to save others, please give a round of applause to them.”
“I also want to say, prepared words, before we introduce my friend Ariana.
And Uh, putting those words aside for a second, last night this nation was challenged were challenged and all of you were challenged and you had a decision to make if you were going to come out here tonight.
And this is so beautiful.
You guys made that decision, you guys looked fear right in the face and said “no we are Manchester,” and the world is watching.”
As you can see, Ari’s influence has gone above and beyond the normal “expectations,” of her job in entertainment.
Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez & Seth Rogen at WE Day! Yay for charity!
It’s true, celebrities have a tight and busy schedule, they have their own contracts and deadlines just as we do in life. And even though our lives are busy, some of us still get out and volunteer to make a difference.
Ari is no different than us, she seeks to make a positive impact not only with her musical talents but with her actions.
Did you know Ariana Grande also supports other causes?

Shout-out to amazing @delphinescarol for tagging me! Thank you <333
RULES: tell your followers eleven facts about yourself and then tag eleven more people to do it.
1. My full name is Emorfili. It is derived from the greek word ‘eumorfia’ which is correlated with beauty and maturity in Ancient Greece.
2. I study Physics and I am currently on my fourth year in Uni. My field of interest is Nuclear Physics and Renewable Energies (or generally ways to help find sustainable energy.) I have to blame two high school teachers for following that path and also, Tony Stark.
3. Physics is my second greatest passion. The first is writing. I’ve been writing since I was ten (mainly a diary and stories I later played out with my dolls). So far I’ve started many stories, but I have finished none of them. My genre is sci-fi fantasy.
4. I am enrolled on a theatric team. I love being on the stage. It’s like hiding in plain sight, because you’re not actually you, you’re pretending to be another character and at the same time you get to channel all your emotions out. I’ve also been told I am a great actress which makes me so so happy.
5. I am incredibly wary of strangers I cross paths with at night, regardless of their appearance. Because of this, I’m always really scared to return home alone after a certain time. Many people have told me it’s unnatural to be so scared, so I decided to take up karate classes this year. And it’s helped A LOT. Also, Caity Lotz is my spirit animal.
6. I love the piano. My parents bought me a mini one when I was a kid and every now and then I will try out tutorials I see on youtube. (I’d perfected ‘Up is Down’ from Pirates of the Caribbean once.) I really want to actually learn to play professionally one day. It’s kind of a bucket-list thing for me.
7. I am a nerd for soundtracks and epic instrumental music. I will go to great extremes to find that-song-that-played-in-the-background™.
8. The song ‘Where Do I Begin’ from the movie ‘Love Story’ as covered by Richard Clayderman was on the video from my christening and I had been searching for it for 18 years (I’m 21 now). That song is literally me. I have an ear for notes, so when I heard an artist sing the original song with the lyrics, I instantly recognized it even though it was not the same version. That was one of the best days of my life. And guess what, every since I’ve been hearing it almost everywhere (from street artists to shows on TV. It’s so strange.)
9. I LOVE cats. I can’t have pets at home (Mom disapproves), but they’re all at my grandparents’ house. I consider them my pets although I don’t live with them. A neighbour of ours has killed most of my cats (we know because he has birds and he puts poisoned milk outside the cages). It makes me SO UPSET literally! And so far we haven’t been able to get him to justice. Ugh. Anyway. Currently I have a dog, which I LOVE LOVE LOVE, I miss him all the time and he’s the first dog I’ve ever loved so much. We named him Merlin, because he is mischievous and bewitched us all at first sight.
10. I’m social depending on the situation. Like sometimes I feel I own my environment and I’m really confident and I make other people laugh. And other times, I’m completely shy. My voice is naturally low so when people tell me “speak louder” or “why are you so shy”, it is literally the death of my confidence.
11. I’ve been told I look like Selena Gomez, Crystal Reed, Emma Watson and Anna Popplewell.
So that’s eleven facts about me! Your turn: @bookaholicthoughts, @missthalou, @vereor-nox-venti, @destianac, @crimson-ball-of-fire, @lililove87, @red-ironman, @captainkaramel, @winifredwevans and whoever else wants to do it!

Color and Casting
Colorism (According to Oxford’s Online Dictionary): prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group.
The “Brown Paper Bag” Test:
Black individuals with skin lighter than a brown paper bag would typically gain more privileges than those who had a darker complexion compared to the color of a brown paper bag. This test was mostly used in the 1900s to determine if a black person looked white enough to gain acceptance or admittance into the upper class part of society.
Color has been something that has separated many things - crayons, laundry, and especially people. While discrimination against people of color is often talked about and brought up on various platforms, it does not seem like there is enough being said about colorism within non-white communities, like the black community. As a dark skinned African-American woman in a colorful family, I’ve grown up hearing many sides of how black people tend to receive different treatment based on the shade of brown they are. For those on the outside looking in at this issue, I am going to explain the effects of colorism in two contemporary films.
Hollywood in general often receives a lot of controversy when it comes to who they choose for roles, especially in films that are supposed to receive a lot of attention when they hit theaters. One of the many reasons for why a movie’s casting can be controversial is when a role based on an actual person, a well known fictitious figure, or even an individual who ideally is supposed to be of a certain ethnic background- is portrayed by an actor who does not accurately fit the description. Whitewashing has been a big hot button topic lately, as there is a belief that movies will sell better if there is a well known white actor involved. There are far too many examples to highlight, but a few that caused major discussion were Emma Stone’s portrayal of an Asian woman in Aloha (2015), the three principle actors in The Last Airbender (2010), Ben Affleck portraying a Mexican-American man in Argo (2012), Tilda Swinton as a Buddist monk in Doctor Strange (2016), and Scarlett Johansson playing a character from Japanese anime in Ghost in a Shell (2017).
To many, these examples are clear indicators of of casting done incorrectly, but there are also examples with films featuring stories of people of color where the ethnic background is accurate but not the right skin color. Why is this so important? Well to start, many of the key issues and conflicts within these plots tend to stem from not just the background, but the appearance of the character. This is too crucial of a detail to get wrong, especially in films that wish to showcase a portrait of someone’s black experience. Skin color is a character in itself. This can not be overlooked, otherwise the story will lose some important value in its message. No matter how well an actor can transform themselves for a role, acting the part is really half of the battle.
NINA (2016)
Director Cynthia Mort, best known for writing for the sitcom Roseanne , released this film as her directorial debut. This biopic of the late, great singer and artist Nina Simone was already eleven years in the making, and many critics had voiced that it should never been released, as not enough research and care was taken with handling the story of an individual who was more than just a black woman with the blues. Mort had spent a day with Ms. Simone in the early 90s and didn’t know herself that it would one day be the inspiration for her first film as a director. She was no doubt in awe of the singer and wanted to do something to honor her memory. It is evident that Mort did her best to research many aspects of Simone’s life, but I believe that the biggest plight of her life was lost in translation, simply because Mort could not relate to the story. As a white woman, she did not consult nearly enough black women, or even those who knew Nina well in general to be able to authentically capture what really brought out the emotion behind Simone’s voice.
In 2012, it was announced that Zoe Saldana, a well-known black but light skinned actress, would take on the role of Nina Simone in Mort’s film.
This is where any potential for the film finding positive acclaim had diminished. Nina Simone’s daughter, Simone Kelly, had even mentioned publicly that Saldana was not the best choice to portray her mother. Because Nina Simone grew up in a time where she was told “her nose was too wide, her skin was too dark,” casting a woman who couldn’t naturally relate with that struggle took away a great deal of what made Ms. Simone so unique and powerful. Simone’s family and estate denounced any ties to the film and were very vocal about their outrage towards it. A white director sticking to the decision to use a light skinned woman (who in the picture above had to paint her face in order to appear to have ‘dark’ skin) is indirectly a display of anti-black racism and further proof that the closer a black individual is to whiteness, the more desirable they are. Nina Simone’s life and legacy completely defied this notion, yet this is how she is being represented and shown to audiences.
I do not doubt that Mort’s heart was in the right place, but I cannot forgive the fact that her mind was not. Those close to Ms. Simone and those who know well of her personality would agree that even Nina herself would be insulted by this if she were alive and knew that this is how she was being shown in a film.
The trailer of the film Nina:
I personally cannot bring myself to watch the actual film based on what I’ve seen in this trailer alone. As a dark skinned woman, I know that I would certainly be offended if I knew a light skinned woman would be portraying me, since a huge part of my identity is based around how I learned to love the skin I’ve been given.
MARSHALL (2017)
Chadwick Boseman, a prominent black actor and dark skinned man, portrays Thurgood Marshall on screen. Boseman has actually got a great track record with representing the black community well. His filmography includes other starring roles in biopics such as 42 (2013), where he played the hall of famer baseball player Jackie Robinson and Get On Up (2015), where he portrayed the wild and complicatedly brilliant singer and musician James Brown, not to mention The Black Panther coming out this year in February, where we will see him and a mostly black cast portray heroic individuals who are also African royalty.
This makes me wonder why Boseman wanted to take on this influential figure when, unlike for his roles of Robinson and Brown, he does not carry a believable resemblance at all to the subject.
Hudlin is known for making many cult classics for the black community such House Party (1990), Boomerang , (1992), The Great White Hype (1996), The
Ladies Man (2000), etc but this will be is first time debuting a cinematic biopic. His motivation behind creating the film is pretty clear, but one might question what exactly made him decide on Boseman for the lead role. Boseman is clearly great at portraying black icons, but that doesn’t mean he needs to do it even when he has little to no likeness to the person at all. I guess I do appreciate that unlike the Nina film, Boseman did not have to wear makeup to make his skin appear lighter in order to portray Thurgood Marshall. That would have been another case of insult to injury.
Some would say this is a very minor setback, as it is predicted that Boseman will deliver another amazing performance in this role, but that is not what I’m doubting here. I’m more so worry about Thurgood’s story.
I’m sure that the plot of this film will be very engaging and the story within will have very moving and poignant aspects, but the actual Thurgood Marshall could not do a lot of what he did at that time if he was as dark as Boseman is. It feels weird for me to celebrate the release of Marshall like I did with Selma (2014) and other works that put revolutionary black leaders on the big screen, when I know already that a big part of what made his life what it was, is the fact that he had light skinned privilege. Marshall would definitely pass the brown paper bag test.
My first reaction when I first heard that this film was in the works was confusion rather than outrage. Surely there are great light skinned black men who could have taken on this role, just like there were deserving darker skinned women who could have accurately depicted Nina Simone.
Part of me understands that we’ve seen so much brilliance from Boseman that maybe it’s just assumed that he can play nearly anyone - but that is a very slippery slope and I would hope that Boseman doesn’t repeat something like this in the future. He is a great talent who doesn’t always need to be the lead, especially in a film based on a light skinned black man who used his advantage to help him get ahead in the rankings of the justice system.
I take biopics very seriously. The actor chosen to play the role, as well as the story and the key elements in the plot need to be on point, otherwise I find myself very disappointed. You are essentially showing the life and legacy of someone to people who may or may not know of that person, but feel as though they will learn more about them through watching the film. Some of the best biopics I’ve seen that beautifully capture their subject’s character and adversities are Selena (1997), Ray (2004), and Frida (2002). Not only was the casting nearly spot on, but the performance of the actors along with the story of these individual's lives comes off as authentic without me having to think too hard about how accurate the details are while watching it. I’m not claiming that these are perfect depictions, as it’s very difficult to have a completely truthful biopic and there is always some point of bias being shown, but I have always thought those those three did an incredible job of focusing more on the person rather than their politics.
I do actually plan on seeing the movie Marshall. Even though I am not satisfied with the casting since it will already make the story partially inaccurate, it still presents some type of empowerment for black people.
The trailer for Marshall:
The Nina film is unnecessarily dramatized to make Ms. Simone a lost soul, who needed the saving of a kind man to stay by her side even as she grew bitter. Maybe that display of Mort’s version of Nina Simone wouldn’t be that terrible to see if it was an actual dark skinned woman, who was communicating this struggle to overcome oppression along with her personal demons. Having a light skinned woman try to explore that while wearing brown paint is unfathomable. It continues the history of darker black women being treated as jokes, not even worthy enough to play women that were naturally dark like themselves on screen. Though this may appear as a double standard, having a dark skinned individual take the place as a light skinned one does not come off as damaging. It seems that black audiences are still getting used to seeing themselves in mainstream films in a positive light. Rarely do we conquer and outsmart our oppressive white counterparts, or the system which oppresses us in general without facing some fatal retaliation or lesson that will carry on to cause further pain among our our people. Marshall is triumphant. A celebration of the black mind and I will look forward to that more than it revealing a new perspective into the life of Thurgood Marshall.
As an upcoming filmmaker myself, works like these make me more cautious in how I will chose to represent people in the stories I create, whether they are based on real individuals or not. The skin color of a person does not just impact how they will be viewed by others around the world, but within their own communities - and of course, themselves. A message will be sent to the audience merely by the person chosen to lead the story. This alone is a key factor in making a work of film either feel relatable or out of touch with reality.
People should be judged by their content, not by their color; but characters on screen need to at least be the right color in order for us to judge the content of the film or how that person’s life is being visually shown to us.

Ending and Thoughts: Forensic Heroes 4
TVB’s grand production drama. Where it has a high budget with a stellar cast, also filmed overseas and use of popular actors & actresses in cameo case roles. Unfortunately TVB decided to air it early in February which is far from the “golden time” to air series. I’m not that surprised with the situation. But I’m sure the biggest reason is cause half of the cast aren’t people TVB wants to promote anymore. Selena Li - Contract ended and signed with an American talent agency. Raymond Wong - Contract ended signed with Louis Koo’s company. Alice Chan- Decided to take a break on filming to focus more on personal life. Rebecca Zhu- Got backlashed from voicing out how uncomfortable she is around Tony Hung. Second reason would be the producer Miu Si Chun has retired and this will be her last series. But airing it so early actually backfired for them as this was aired during the covid- 19 situation where basically everyone stayed home. Because of this thousands of people tuned into this drama. It got super high ratings and has the highest average watchers for a drama that TVB has not seen in years!! So their plan to air it early backfired so badly for them.
Honestly, this drama wasn’t that good. The cases were either boring or predictable. The only case that kept me on my feet was the mother- long lost son case. Other than that the cases were bad. Which sucked cause these cases had so much potential to do better but the writing sucked! I can’t explain how disappointed I am that the cases were so easy for us to guess who did it. And some guest stars were wasted on this drama. Yumiko Cheng, Sharon Chan, Nina Paw and Patrick Tse are some examples of useless characters that didn’t need to be there. Also the character development was so poorly done that I’m just stuck here wondering if the cutting of Jacqueline Wong effected the drama so much that it ended up being choppy!
Charm Ting (Fred Cheng) is considered a main character but he seemed more like a kelefe. Which is hilarious cause in the first Forensic Heroes he had a bigger role there than here. He’s literally in the background where he would say 1 or 2 lines and then disappears. He was there just to be a love interest to Ko Ching (Rebecca Zhu) which was pointless cause her role is super small as well. We don’t even know when they even started dating. They were barely seen together. Charm has admitted to having a crush on Ko Ching but that’s it. Ko Ching never seemed interested in him until the end where they’re magically dating. The writer focused way too much on adding nonsensical characters when they should be focusing on the main ones! Monique Hau (Yumiko Cheng) isn’t needed at all. I thought maybe half way through she would die or she kills someone but no she was just there to date Ko On (Raymong Wong) and then dumps him when her first love comes back. Like why? Why bother inviting Yumiko for such a stupid role? Instead of Ko On wasting his time for this stand in girlfriend they should’ve focused more on her budding relationship with Chris Tsui (Roxanne Tong). Cause when he got together with her in the end it made no sense whatsoever. I actually thought I missed an episode because of how random it was. The last we saw is Chris tracking Ko Ons biological sister. They were friends at that time and remained that way until the end where somehow Chris fell for Ko On despite never showing that and vice versa. Like I’m not even sure which relationship was more out of the blue? Charm/ Ko Ching or Ko On/Chris? The only relationship that’s worth getting invested in is between Man Ka Hei (Selena Li) and Stan Sze (Gabriel Harrison). Seriously they were the only couple that actually slowly built up towards being something more and they had crazy good chemistry together which you can’t see from any of the other couples at all! Which brings me to Queen Sui (Alice Chan) and King Kwok (Shaun Tam). Boy their chemistry was the worst!! You feel absolutely nothing for them. It was like watching two blocks of wood dating. And the best part? These two who had the worst chemistry ends up the one getting married! Wooooooow. I feel like the problem though lies on the actress Alice. She’s a good actress, she’s amazing when it comes to villain roles but when it comes to love relationships she fails at it. It might have to do with how her real life relationship didn’t work out. She mentioned that she was in a loveless relationship with her husband. But they were both were too scared to leave each other and cause of that they prolonged a relationship that never got better. So I’m convinced it’s due to this, that it’s harder for her to portray these romance scenes.
The uneven screentime between the leads got me thinking of how detrimental the refilming of Jacqueline was. Chris ends up getting involved with the forensic cast in the first place cause she rented a room from King Sir. In that apartment she also shares it with Charm. I’m like 99% sure they cut out those “roommate” scenes, which you’d think “eh it’s filler scenes, it doesn’t matter”. But it’s cause they cut those, Fred ends up getting heavily downgraded! Also if they were just gonna have Chris basically not interact with the forensic team, they shouldn’t have bothered to have her move into their apartment then. Cause it didn’t advance the plot and was just a waste of time. Chris was a heavy character in the beginning but then disappeared drastically until near the end. The storyline started off amazingly good too! Chris was the reason why Ko On’s sister Ko Seen (Kelly Cheung) ended up getting kidnapped. It’s cause of this she becomes a journalist to find Ko On and Ko Seen. She was extremely remorseful and worked hard to find Ko Seen. Which is why I was pissed when after she was found, Chris never met her. They never interacted. A scene where Chris apologizes to her face to face would’ve been super nice. I can’t help but also believe that chances are it was in the script but they couldn’t have Roxanne film it with Kelly probably due to scheduling conflicts.
The ending case should be the best one. The one where it’ll keep us on our toes. It didn’t and was also a downer. Sharon Chan who guest stars as Lam Ka Mei was also a waste of a role. Though Sharon did amazing playing a split personality character, it never went into depth how it happened. Generally, this disorder happens if the character herself experiences a high trauma where they go into hiding and another “stronger” person comes out. This case was also the first time where Ka Mei “killed”. I’m assuming this disorder happened due to her older sisters death? The problem lies on how her sister died 7-8 years ago, yet this is the first time her other side came out and also the first time she killed. According to Ka Mei herself, this was the first time she felt something was wrong with her. After all these years her disorder comes out now? Okay. Anyways she gets locked up in a mental hospital cause she did kill someone even if she’s just a copy cat killer.
The real criminal ended up being Michael Ma (Jonathon Cheung) who happens to be Ko Seens adoptive brother. Basically he went on a killing rampage to kill those that hurt her sister. This was such a boring revelation. I thought they were gonna throw in a twist where Ko Seen was the actual killer and Michael took the blame for her. Ko Seen uses Ko Ons guilt to her advantage and tricks him into believing she’s innocent. Ko Seen would’ve made an amazing villain. She could’ve held all the resentment towards everyone from what happened to her. In the end she did get kidnapped cause her brother let go of her, she got sold off to random people before finally getting “rescued” and being placed in an orphanage. What should’ve happened in the end would be Ko Seen faking her amnesia towards her brother and sister and killing those that mistreat her. In the end she plots to kill Chris as she’s the one that lured her away to get kidnapped. As she kills Chris, Ko On shows up to save her (which would’ve helped with the relationship development) and for Ko On to finally see that Ko Seen is a bad person. That would’ve been more of a stellar ending to the case. Now I know that at the very last scene it shows 4 dead clowns & flashes to Ko Seen. Which alludes to Ko Seen being evil and killing clowns. But honestly that’s not enough. And I’m pretty sure they only added that in cause of the good ratings so they wanted it to end in sort of a cliffhanger. The conclusion was very messy. Even though Ko Ching, Chris, Ka Hei, Queen were all trying on dresses for Queens wedding they didn’t show them all together. Instead they only showed them paired off together. Chris with Ko On. Queen with King. Ka Hei with Stan and Ko Ching with Charm. I’m guessing they couldn’t get the whole cast together for them to film them altogether. Which I didn’t like. Chris is never with all of them at the same time. I guess with the refilming of the scenes it caused the drama to have inconsistencies and it hurt the drama if you ask me. At least Roxanne was an amazing replacement for Jacqueline. Her acting good and she looked very pretty. And her emotional scenes were nice which is something Jacqueline has trouble with. The drama is nice to watch to pass the time with I guess... but that’s it don’t expect to be surprised. And hey Ka Hei and Stan were a lovely couple! So they got one couple right at least.

TVB Anniversary Awards 2019
Best Actor
Who I believe should win:
Yau Bin Ko (Bingo) from The Defected portrayed by Philip Keung
If TVB chooses not to rig the awards, then Philip should be the winner. His performance was heart stopping. We felt his characters pain when he was forced to runaway due to the betrayal of his handler. We felt his sadness when he couldn’t clear his name. We felt his finality when he accepted he would not be able to get out unscathed. He is the very definition of a tragic hero. Everything he did was because he wanted the world to be a safer place. But alas he died while everyone still thought he was a good cop turned bad. I believe only a handful of people knew the truth, of what a good cop he truly was. It was a rollercoaster of emotions with his performance of a lifetime. Even now I’m still affected by this character. He was definitely the best actor out of everyone this year.
Who won:
Tong Ming from Big White Duel portrayed by Kenneth Ma
His win was a long time coming. He should’ve won back then for The Hippocratic Crush & The Exorcist Meter but alas he got snubbed cause TVB wanted to promote someone else. He definitely deserved a Best Actor a win, but unfortunately he shouldn’t have won for this year. Best Actor is supposed to be given to someone who had the greatest acting of the year and that was not Kenneth. Tong Ming was a one dimensional character, nothing special & did not require major acting skills compared to Philip Keungs portrayal of Bingo. So it’s a bit hard for me to think about it. Kenneth has always been a solid actor but Philip should’ve won this year. It’s also so disrespectful of TVB to not even have Philip enter the top 5 for Best Actor. And it was awful that he walked away with nothing. I’m happy that Kenneth finally won this award but I hate how he had to win this way - no competition, “pity award” for 15 nominations with no wins, and only won cause Philip wasn’t a contracted artiste.
Best Actress
Who I believe should win:
Alex Cheung/ Coco from Barrack O’Karma portrayed by Selena Lee
The drama itself was amazing. But Selena’s performance was eye catching. She plays friendly Alex at the present while playing sultry Coco in the past. Two very different distinct characters that she managed to pull off. She even added her own personal touch by purposely making her voice deeper when playing Coco. I applaud her for her crying scenes and I really felt her fear and sadness when she started to fade away. Selena has always been an excellent actress but was always given lacklustre roles of being in the background while her male costars took the lead. This is her first drama since 2015, where she is finally given a role that’s not male driven & guess what she shined as bright as ever.
Who won:
Man Hei Wah from The Defected portrayed by Kara Wai
She falls under the same line as Kenneth Ma. Definitely serving of the award - just not for this year. In The Defected her portrayal was just bad to me. I just remember her screaming & smirking a lot. Which is odd since her acting has always been phenomenal but here she was annoying. You could say “she’s supposed to be evil” that’s why you’re annoyed. But that’s not it. She was just annoying. Maggie Yu from Wonder Woman was also a villain but I wasn’t annoyed I just thought “wow she’s really evil & I hate her”. Man Hei Wa was a character I didn’t hate for being a villain but hated her cause of her annoying smirks that comes out of nowhere. It’s not bad that she won cause TVB has always treated her poorly & her acting has always been good just not in this drama.
Who I believe should win:
Best Supporting Actor
Lam Lo Si from Barrack O’Karma portrayed by Lau Kong
A solid green leaf actor. He did a great job with this character. He played the mysterious bookshop owner but with a side of creepiness factor. He was part of the reason I kept watching, cause it was interesting to see his backstory unravel! And when it got exposed he’s half the reason why Coco passed away, you can see the fear in his eyes of regret & that he himself was scared of his own self. He’s has been with TVB for the longest time... I believe he’s due for an award now.
Who won:
Kam Sing On from Lo and Behold portrayed by Chow Ka Lok
Hmmm. Mixed feeling about this. For one, he’s a newcomer. For two, this was his first and only drama. It would’ve made more sense for him to win under Most Improved. With all the older veterans waiting in line to win an award, it certainly leaves a bad taste that such a younger green actor won instead. He was definitely humble on stage accepting the award but did he deserve it? Ka Lok winning definitely means TVB has intentions to promote him as the next siu sang.
Best Supporting Actress
Who I believe should win:
Yan Cheng Gong from Wonder Woman portrayed by Maggie Yu
Wow. Wow. It’s been suuuuper long since we watched a villain we hated so much. She was a huge standout in the series. Maggie flew under everyone’s radar and I’m pretty sure everyone (including me) did not see that coming. She was such a conniving character but at the same time, interesting cause you can’t help but think what is she gonna do next? She’s not gonna just let everything go. Maggie’s performance was amazing, last drama I watched her was Daddy Cool. And in that drama she was a sweet stepmother so to see her be comepletely different in this was refreshing! Huge improvement with her Cantonese as well. I hope TVB treats her well cause I wouldn’t mind seeing her more!
Who won:
Ho Tai from Barrack O’Karma portrayed by Candice Chiu
This was a shocker. I didn’t think Maggie Yu would win (cause ya know TVB politics). But I definitely didn’t see Candice winning. I thought if anything it would be Samantha Ko, since she was highly praised & TVB is promoting her. But this was a wonderful surprise. Candice also did an amazing job playing the baby snatcher crazy woman in the drama! I thought she was super good but didn’t think too much of it cause her winning just didn’t seem at all possible. She always played small roles & TVB honestly never gave an eff about her. Maggie for sure had the better performance. But even though Maggie couldn’t win, I’m glad it was Candice who got it instead!
Who I believe should win:
Most improved Actress
Gloria Tang
If you look back on her old dramas, my goodness she was horrible. Overreacting and stiff. I didn’t see her potentially getting better (due to a lot of past Miss HK that always sucked in acting) but she proved me wrong. Year by year she gradually improves. Thoroughly impressed by her and I really like how humble she is. Even getting a nomination is a huge thing for her & she understands that she still has a lot to earn. Out of everyone on this most improved nomination list, she definitely beats everyone.
Who won:
Kelly Cheung
Not even kidding. I saw this coming. TVB is heavily promoting her she’s in a lot of upcoming dramas as leads or a major role. I just wasn’t sure if she’d for this award or Best Supporting. Gloria had the best improvement out of everyone. But just cause you improved doesn’t mean you get the award. This award has always been rigged & almost never given to someone who actually “improved”. But nonetheless, Kelly is a fine actress. She’s actually really good. She’s not cringy to watch and I enjoy watching her. Don’t mind seeing her on the screen especially since she’s on her way to becoming the next fadan.
I skipped some awards cause I have no opinions on those. Obviously my opinion list is more like a “fantasy” list. I don’t see TVB giving the 2 top awards of BA to 2 “outsiders”. Sometimes, no matter how popular a character is if TVB chooses not to promote them - then they aren’t getting an award. It happened with Joyce Tang in House of Spirits (she literally walked away with nothing). The awards are always rigged, so I don’t have high hopes that this year would have fair results. But nonetheless, I feel that the people on this list are the true winners.
