Giant Baba Death 20th Anniversary Memorial Show - 2/19/2019: Abdullah the Butcher Retires
Tumblr media
Strong Style Story Episode 49 on Pro Wrestling Only
There really is one event being talked about today in puroresu, and that’s the memorial card for the 20th Anniversary of the death of Shohei “Giant” Baba, the founder of All Japan Pro Wrestling. This show also featured the retirement ceremony of the legendary Abdullah the Butcher at the tender age of 78 years old. This was a co-production of AJPW, New Japan, Big Japan, NOAH and Wrestle-1, with wrestlers from other companies such as Dragon Gate and Michinoku Pro participating as well. You knew this was momentous when NJPW founder Antonio Inoki (who is 76 today!), the lifetime rival in wrestling and business with Baba, opened the show up. Results:
Giant Baba Memorial Battle Royale: Mitsuo Momota d. Kim Duk, MEN’s Teioh, TARU, Ryuji Hijikata, Yuto Aijima, Joel Deaton, Masao Inoue, Tsuyoshi Kikuchi, Masahito Kakihara, Tamon Honda, Yasu Urano (7:11)(Referee: Mighty Inoue)

Taichi, TAKA Michinoku & Yoshinobu Kanemaru [SZKG] d. Masanobi Fuchi [AJPW], Yuma Aoyagi [AJPW] & Yoshiaki Fujiwara [FREE] (Taichi > Fuchi, cradle, 9:43)

Jun Akiyama [AJPW], Takao Omori [AJPW] & Taiyo Kea [FREE] d. Satoshi Kojima [NJPW], Yuji Nagata [NJPW] & Osamu Nishimura [FREE](Akiyama > NIshimura, Exploder, 12:32)
Mil Mascaras & Dos Caras d. NOSAWA Rongai [Tokyo Gurentai] & Kaz Hayashi [W-1] (Mascaras > NOSAWA, crossbody, 11:06)
Kento Miyahara [AJPW] & Daisuke Sekimoto [BJW] d. Hiroshi Tanahashi [NJPW] & Yoshitatsu [FREE] (Miyahara > Yoshitatsu, Shutdown German Suplex, 24:24)
Quite a lot happened here. If you see nothing else, watch the main event. The crowd was so into Triple Crown champion Kento Miyahara, who wore the original Triple Crown titles to the ring. Miyahara played a great face in peril, with Sekimoto the hot tag. Tanahashi heeled it up big time in this match but in the end, all four showed respect.
The semi-main is completely skipable bar for the sideshow of a 76-year-old Mil Mascaras doing a flying crossbody where before he could barely walk. SANADA & BUSHI represented, having both come from AJPW initially (under Keiji Muto). The third from main was definitely one for the 90s puroresu heads.
Atsushi Onita wrestled his final match before his upcoming double knee replacement surgery. Tomoaki Honma wrestled his first “Big Japan” match since he left BJW in 2000. Daichi Hashimoto entered to his father’s entrance theme.
Abdullah the Butcher was wheeled into the ring, being wheelchair-bound. He said he wished Baba was there. In addition to the guests listed above, there were video messages from The Destroyer Dick Beyer (who was not able to travel under doctor’s orders) and Minoru Suzuki. Post-main, video messages in tribute to Baba were played from Johnny Ace, Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat.
All in all, this show was always going to be more on the Fun side of things than Good, but there are several matches you should see. The show is making the rounds on the internet, however NJPWWorld did tweet out the show will be on there, eventually, in some form, so keep an eye out for that.
The next NJPW show proper is on Thursday, featuring another retirement ceremony, that of Takashi Iizuka.
New Japan Road - 2/21/2019, Tokyo Korakuen Hall (NJPWWorld)
Jushin Thunder Liger & Yuya Uemura v. Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club] & Robby Eagles [FREE]

Live-Action Naruto Looks In Real Life
Tumblr media
Originally created by Masashi Kishimoto for Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999, Narutofollows a young ninja, with a sealed demon within him, that wishes to become the leader of his home village. The series ran for 700 chapters overall, and was adapted into an anime series by Studio Pierrot and Aniplex that ran from 2002 to 2017. The series was popular enough to warrant a sequel, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations which is set several years after the events of the original Naruto story and features the children of many of its key characters such as Naruto and Hinata.
The original incarnation of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto may be long gone as the series lives on through its sequel, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, but it's still getting a ton of love in Japan. Live-action adaptations of popular anime and manga series are increasingly becoming more prevalent, so it's no surprise that a series like Naruto has gotten one of its own. With this new look at an upcoming stage play for the series, it seems like the look of the series has been translated very well.
Naruto is no stranger to the world of live-action, and it has yet to fail fans yet. While Hollywood has yet to get its hands on the franchise, Japan has put out several stage plays based on the anime, and it looks like a new poster for the next show has hit.
And as it turns out, all of Naruto’s top villains will come to play in this — uh — play.
As you can see below, a new poster has been released for Live Spectacle Naruto: Song of the Akatsuki. The play is a revival and will head to Osaka at the start of October before moving to Tokyo closer to the winter. Now, a new poster has been released for the show, and it proves the baddies of Naruto can be done IRL.
Joining the previously confirmed Shinji Rachi as Itachi Uchiha are Teruma as Pain, Takeshi Hayashino as Kisame Hoshigaki, Ryo Tsuji as Deidara, and Hironori Katayama as Tobi.Written and directed by Akiko Kodama with music composed by Shunsuke Wada, Naruto: Song of the Akatsuki is gearing up to have 17 cast members in total and covers up to the 27th volume of Masashi Kishimoto's original Naruto manga.
The other cast members include the previously confirmed Kodai Matsuoka as Naruto Uzumaki, Ryuji Sato as Sasuke Uchiha, Yui Ito as Sakura Haruna, Yuki Kimisawa as Kakashi Hatake, Rei Fujita as Yamato, Fuma Sadamoto as Sai Yamanaka, Seshiru Daigo as Tsunade, Tomoya Yamaguchi as Jugo, Kanon Nanaki as Karin, Keishi Hagio as Hozuki Suigetsu, and Hiro Yumi as Orochimaru.
Tumblr media
The musical originally premiered in Japan in 2017, and even had a performance in Singapore, but will be having a return run in Japan starting this Fall with an initial run in Osaka from October 25th through November 4th, and follow up runs in Tokyo from November 8-10 and November 15-December 1.
Sasuke is front and center as expected, but his costume looks just about perfect. The grungy outfit nails how the anime brought the getup to life, but it makes it more believable with some intricate seams and a bit of dirt.
If you look to the back, you can see more ninjas lined up behind the Uchiha. To the left, fans will find Orochimaru dressed in his usual tunic, and the hero looks even creepier in live-action. They are joined by Kabuto to their side, and the medical ninja has on his iconic glasses as expected.
Finally, the rest of Team Hawk rounds out the new poster. Jugo, Karin, and Suigetso can all be seen in their usual outfits. Jugo might not be as beefy here as he is in the anime, but his angular jaw looks like it was cut from the anime. It is this attention to detail on all the characters that makes this live-action poster so stunning, and fans can only hope film adaptations will take such care down the line.

"FIVE" Character Profiles (MENS5 and Asou Hina)
Shimizu Toshi (Sato Ryuji)
Intelligent, good-looking and a good fighter, Toshi is a leader-like existence in MENS5 and boasts of an overwhelming popularity with the ladies. He, himself, has a reputation of being a playboy and is quick to charm girls.
Breaking Hina's glasses and getting to know her through trying to make it up to her for his actions, Toshi shows an interest in her, which prompts Kojirou to comment that Toshi might genuinely love her. However, nobody actually knows how Toshi truly feels as he, himself, has told Hina, "Don’t fall in love with me".
Toshi has a reputation for having no weaknesses and being "perfect", but unbeknownst to most, he has a phobia of the dark as a result of an incident that happened in his past.
Tairaku Jun (Kuroba Mario)
His intelligence is undeniable, but Jun always ranks in at Number 5 in their year (this puts his academic ranking as second-lowest in amongst Hina and the members of MENS5) because he finds it troublesome to move his pen during exams. He is also the member of MENS5 who most likely has the lowest fighting capability. Excelling at the use of computers, Jun spends his time trading stocks and shares online. He also specialises in hacking.
Upon getting to know Hina, Jun positions himself as Hina's friend and doesn't seem to show an interest in pursuing her romantically. Cool and composed, amongst the MENS5 members, Jun is the most mysterious one.
Iwabuchi Takui (Matsuoka Koudai)
An all-round outstanding athlete, Takui is generally able to excel at any sport. Not the most studious of the group, his school bag is often filled with toys in the place of study materials.
The eldest in his family, Takui is a caring brother who looks after his younger siblings. He can also do housework, being especially good in cooking and sewing.
Takui is very direct in his feelings for Hina, and shows a clear interest in pursuing her romantically.
Arisawa Nao (Nishii Yukito)
The mood maker of the group, Nao is cute and extremely popular because of this. Even as he is studying, he is also the president of the company "Murder Bear".
Usually, he is the type of person who refers to himself as "boku", but when he snaps, he refers to himself as "ore" and is strong enough to even send tables flying.
Like Takui, Nao is very direct and unambiguous in his romantic affections for Hina. However, there are instances where it seems like Nao has some very ambiguous feelings towards Jun that seem to cross the line of friendship.
Yauchi Kojirou (Negishi Takuya)
Kojirou is a member of the kendo club and can make level-headed decisions even in the midst of carnage. As a swordsman, he is extremely skilled, and is the one who often covers for Hina during fights. However, because of an incident in his past, he is weak against machines and is bad with small, cute things. He also has a bad sense of direction.
Asou Hina (Asakawa Nana)
Due to her parents' frequent job re-locations, Hina has transferred schools regularly. However, that has finally come to an end, and it is when she transfers into her new school that she meets the boys of MENS5. She is generally someone who is sensible, but is someone who can lose her head and get very fired up because of her competitive spirit.
Despite being nicknamed "princess" by the boys, she is by no means a damsel in distress and can hold her own in fights; she, in fact, has learnt an assortment of martial arts, including judo, karate and kendo, during her years of growing up, and because of this experience, is really good at fighting.
In general, Hina is an intelligent girl, but can be dense in romantic matters, which lands her in some really complicated romantic situations.
