🌸 Spring Feelings 🌸
— a short rinharu drabble for #sakurathon .
Rin sat contentedly under the cherry blossom tree, his eyes closed as he breathed in the sweet scent of the flowers. He had been waiting for Haru for what felt like hours, but he didn't mind. The warm sun on his face and the gentle rustling of the leaves above him were enough to lull him into a peaceful sleep.
As he dozed off, Rin's head slowly drooped to the side, his breathing becoming slow and steady. He dreamed of swimming in a sea of cherry blossoms, their petals soft against his skin.
And he was gliding through them, parting the petals to expose the beautiful water beneath, sparkling and inviting. He felt at home, because water...water meant -
A gentle hand shook his shoulder and stirred Rin from his slumber.
Blinking groggily, he saw Haru kneeling next to him, a soft smile on his face.
"Sorry I'm late," Haru said, his voice as soothing as the breeze that rustled the branches of the tree.
Rin grumbled a little before letting out a sigh, and reached to intertwine their fingers. "Whatever...you're here now. But don't make me miss you again, idiot." Red hair fell to hide equally flushed crimson cheeks, and he pouted slightly.
Haru's smile only deepened in fondness as he hummed his agreement. His thumb caressed the soft skin of Rin's slender hand, willing him to look up, and when he didn't, he took a more drastic measure and simply plopped down to lay his head on his boyfriend's lap.
"What do you think you're doing?! Haru-"
"Rin, look."
Haru interrupted and gestured to the tree above them, and Rin followed his gaze to see a flurry of petals raining down upon them, painting the ground all pink and white.
Rin's heart swelled with happiness as he realized...he was exactly where he wanted to be: under the cherry blossom tree, with Haru by his side.
He leaned down, Haru leaned up. Gravitating towards each other. And just as their lips met, above their heads two cherry blossoms kissed in the wind.
Spring had finally begun.

You like to run free, but I'll still make my plans.
I'll change my routine, if you'll hold my hand.
I have just few considerations and ramblings here about the mix. This started as a simple and self-indulgent rinharu playlist mainly for setting a mood while I read fanfics because I can't do anything without music. But, two very important people I met here encouraged me to submit it for Sakurathon (@museaway and @dragon-of-timeless-blue, thank you guys so much for the inspiration! ❀).
And since that happened, the playlist became something more, I guess? Now, it's kinda of a narrative of how I imagined Rin and Haru's relationship would developt over the years based pretty much on the canon material we have (with my own perceptions of them to fill the holes). I'm not gonna get into too much detail because the mix speaks for itself (I hope), but Rin and Haru have always been drawn to each other, that's just a fact, and getting into the romance aspect, I think they're the type of people that have trouble realizing what they feel, then suddenly something drives them apart and a lot of emotions are felt and they have miscommunication problems often but then they just blossom (if you catch my drift) and finally get comfortable with one another and their new relationship.
With that being said, with you have that option on Spotify, I highly recommend listening to the songs sequentially, at least at first. I got really into putting this playlist together so I'm pretty proud of it and I hope you guys like (at least some of) the songs!

We almost can't believe it's already time to bring out the kadomatsu again! 2023 just raced by, didn't it…?! Let's take a moment to look back on everything Rin & Haru (and their fans!) have achieved this year.

The Matsuoka Rin/Nanase Haruka tag on AO3 now holds 3,674 works!
That means 173 new fics were posted this year. (There might've been more than that, but it's hard to keep track of creators privatising their older fics!)
And the Night Pool's AO3 collection is up to 90 works!

Here at TNP, we revived @sakurathon, a cherry blossom-centric event! This year, the event received 40 works by 19 lovely participants.
Since it was such a big success, we're bringing the event back on April 27th & 28th 2024.

It's been a busy year!
In July, @starstarfairy hosted Wave Of Memory (@rinharumemories) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Free! The event ran in two wave on tumblr and Twitter and combined polls, fan memories, and all types of fanworks.
@sweetheavenfics helped us run the RH-friendly @soumako-week in September!
@ryu-outsider hosted the month-long daily prompt event Free!cember here on Tumblr. It welcomed the entire fandom. The event was promoted by eleanorenchanted and run via hashtag.
And @rinharuweek ran for a full 10 days this year in celebration of the show's anniversary! They are just wrapping up.

Free! turned 10 in 2023. Omedetou gozaimasu!
Free! The Final Stroke Part 2 broke all of the series' previous records in the box office, bringing in over 1 billion yen
It also finally made it to Crunchyroll.com for the US & select others
Miyano Mamoru & Shimazaki Nobunaga fed us (+ fanartists' inspiration) well by shouting "HARU!!" and "RIIIN!!" at each other before hugging passionately during the 10th anniversary event at the Saitama Super Arena
We got tons of amazing new art; including a cover illustration for Free! The Band Live's Ever Blue performance in Yokohama, Animedia's July W-cover, Sweets Paradise's promotional art, and Kyoani's 10th anniversary event's illustration
Rin's ripped jeans (+ THE ANKLETS) in the Matsukiyo & Cocokara's Top Of Summer collaboration launched a thousand fanworks
Matsuoka-senshu, Nanase-senshu, Kirishima-senshu & Yamazaki-senshu represented Mizuno at the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka
Spoon2Di recently restocked volume 78 & 85 on their webshop, and Akiba Pass Shop opened pre-orders for some gorgeous tapestries featuring said art
Karatz, Bikkuriman Choco, Iwami & DECOL all bumped Rin up to 2nd place in character listings (where he belongs!!)
Last but not least, KyoaniShop bankrupted us all by releasing amazing new merchandise (and also did not try to hide that Rin is the Free! series' 2nd protagonist, either…)
