It was the right choice for sure but fuck, it hurts like shit. Never wanted it to reach this point but here we are. Really not sure what to do now besides crying.

I do want Fivan to be trapped in the Ice Court for the Angst and also so the Crows can rescue them in s3, but this is also because I DESPERATELY need the Ivan/Jesper foetp to continue, like SO BAD
Hence why I'm sad that we can't technically, s2-canonically have Ivan, completely torn to pieces, stumbling into Ketterdam half-dead and swearing vengeance, absolutely mad with VENGEANCE, I WILL KILL THAT ZEMENI DURAST IF IT IS THE LAST THING I DO

couple gris.haverse (primarily alina) things
big fan of nikolai and alina as a friendship. i did not particularly care for nikolai in s&s (or r&r but i still cried at everything related to him and like props to leigh for that) but i did love the fact that alina had someone else that they could talk to. i still think about them linking arms At All Times. It's not a hard & fast no romantic them for me, i guess, but it would definitely depend on the nikolai writer
Alina is never queen <3 hope that helps <3 i understand the show direction here but alina never wanted to be queen and her saying no to nikolai in the end was sooo important. she has given enough.
alina is not ?? selfish ?? or stupid ?? for being like hey i cannot physically or mentally give anything else right now and i need to go
alina is well aware that there are people that are better equipped for this particular role and it was never something they wanted to begin with. they took on as much as they could. they died for it. they couldn't come back from what happened in destroying the fold and Be A Leader.
sainthood definitely plays into this. alina is so much more than a grisha, so much more than a person. alina will never be fully grisha or fully otkazat'sya. that in between is really something that no one else can understand, either.
i do keep alina losing her powers because i personally thought it was powerful and showcased the fact that she literally gave everything to ravka. it also felt like the apt conclusion to her search for the amplifiers, the warnings about what possessing them would do, and in general the passing of them to otkazat'sya was A lot. following, alina is already hounded by sun saint people ( pls i'm forgetting the names for the groups rn ) and that constant reminder of losing her powers is gutting, and it's another reason that they can't just Go Back
alina doesn't stop caring about ravka? or grisha? the fight just looks different for her now

it's actually not that unreasonable that mal would need to adjust to alina being grisha and also that he would have to react to his own trauma. i know this is an extreme take.
mal deserted the army for alina, mal would follow alina, but mal also Good at what he did. he was vital. he was a tracker and was useful and he lost that in part. he got to live despite this, in part because of alina, and there is a part of mal that wishes that they had treated him like any deserter
does mal fuck up? yes. is show!mal somehow better than book!mal because he isn't as traumatized? no? he needs to adjust to everything that has happened, and eventually he needs to adjust to him actually dying (+ also to alina killing him even if he was adamant that it needed to happen). it's part of why i'm very okay with his ending in the show because i do think that he needs to find a purpose and explore without his tracking abilities. this is more complicated with Misha because mal is extremely protective of him, but i think alina going back to keramzin with him helps him. at this point he can also better recognize that he can't just go back and it wouldn't be fair to either of them (or himself)
i honestly do not think inej's trauma has been erased. i definitely understand the gripe with tante heleen being killed off screen and the s1 reaction. inej freezing is very important to me. but so is the fact that inej tells kaz that she struggles too.
inej and kaz have different reactions to touch. inej had to adapt to touch in a way kaz also has not needed to on account of their different circumstances. this is not me saying that kaz would have been able to or any of that, but inej in order to survive DID. kaz became the bastard of the barrel but inej became the wraith. able to disappear in a moment, even if not physically.
inej canonly has to spell out that she struggles even when jesper and nina touch her. idk maybe i'm being too kind but i do think that amita showed hesitation in many cases. we're not in their heads so we need those little context clues; inej hesitating before initiating anything, rarely initiating but responding to the people close to her. the point is just inej is accustomed to swallowing that fear, but that does not mean it is not there. it just presents itself differently! and that's okay! something i care a LOT about in this series is that they show the different manners in which trauma manifests because it is not the same for everyone
i think inej would take issue with nina making a show to turn leoni and adrik into saints
i also think leoni does not particularly like this, she just understands and agreed with the reasoning. however, she was dedicated to the mission in fjerda and thinks that more good could have come if her cover had not been blown, making her and adrik unsafe
she does not resent nina for this and does believe much good comes from it. she chooses to focus on that. they helped people who needed help, and that is worth it in her eyes.
it is a choice, though. leoni chooses to be optimistic. she chooses to see the good. she was saved by someone who was willing to die to save her, who took on the poisons herself so that leoni could live, and she chooses to honor this every day. she was blessed in more ways than one.
she also needs to see the greater good because she knows that she is helping create things that are killing people. this is something that she can struggle with a lot. she needs to believe that the cause is just and that it will end with less suffering overall.

season 2 didn’t deliver as much as season 1 on that front, but this scene did reignite my fondness for Inesper <33. him running towards her! her surprise! the twirling! the giggling! the way she touches his face and looks at him in the last one!!
on that note, in combination with this one between her and Tolya (I wish they would fuck but I know it won’t ever happen, it would violate Shipping Rules six ways to Sunday in a way I bet these people are too cowardly to pull)...
well, I was reminded of certain anti-kanej rants I’ve seen that. incomprehensibly to me. were writting on Kaz’s behavior. as if HE is harmed by this relationship in any way alsñkdfjasdf (meanwhile like. five whole people, if that, have mentioned the fucked up econimic aspect of their dynamic and how it affects Inej. and one of them is me).
their argument was that Inej’s “I’ll have you without armour or not at all” quote was PUSHY and EVEN ABUSIVE and blah blah blah. now that I’ve seen the line in the show I see this take is just as cold as I thought. sns, Inej stating what she wants out of a relationship, the intimacy she desires from it, and making it clear they are a must for her she won’t compromise on? that’s not pushing boundaries that’s ENFORCING HER OWN for fuck’s sake. Kaz is obviously perfectly capable of enforcing his own, he’s not a pwoor baby that needs you to defend him he’s a fucking mob boss asdñlfaksjf.
(several times I’ve considered replying directly to these posts but I’ve elected to block their ops instead. hard pass on welcoming into a debate people that are just transparent racist pieces of shit)

I can't tell if you liked Shadow and Bone or not and it's killing me lol
i also can't tell if i liked it! i know for sure i liked s1 a lot better than s2. s1 was an interesting viewing experience because i had to adjust to the fact that they really weren't following the books and i wasn't prepared for that. i think what they did with the grisha trilogy worked really well. pretty much every change was for the better. it made the characters more likable which serves the plot a lot better. the crows stuff, however, was more jarring both because i'm far more invested in them and because the changes were bigger and without any obvious payoff. but once i got over the hesitancy of the story being changed it was mostly fine. there were still a few things i didn't like but overall it was like okay i get it. we're moving chess pieces around because we're setting stuff up.
going into s2 i knew they weren't following the books closely so i went in with the mindset of "hey this is its own thing and you should judge it based on what it is, and not what it isn't." and then... they just shoehorned in a bunch of big Moments(tm) from the books that... have no relevancy in the story they're telling?
like what was the point of kaz bringing pekka to his knees begging? pekka still has a crap ton of people loyal to him. he's still running shit from hellgate. there was no emotional catharsis to it. and kaz hasn't built up the reputation of "When everyone knows you're a monster, you needn't waste time doing every monstrous thing" yet soooooooo it kinda just feels like kaz showed that yeah he can figure out what is most important to someone and push that button (figuratively, because he won't actually do the horrible thing) but it ultimately doesn't even matter because... ??? like i don't know why that mattered in the context of the story they're actually telling. it was just a big moment from the book plopped into the show. if they wanted to rearrange the pieces so that pekka would be in hellgate with matthias, they could have done that without using the alby storyline in a place where not only does it not fit, it completely undermines the point.
same with the "i will have you without armor" interaction. i'm not a big fan of that line in the books to begin with. it's fine. i just think there are way more *scream into my pillow about it* moments but i know it's a fan favorite and it feels like that's the only reason they included it. when it happens in the book, it's because kaz hasn't offered inej anything, really. he's asked her to stay in ketterdam but that's the most vulnerable he's allowed himself to be with her. so it serves as like a linchpin for him to do better, sort of? but in the show... he's already told her about jordie. he's already given her freedom from the menagerie and a lead on her family. he's already given her everything except physical skin to skin contact, and so that line just comes across as "you're not good enough because you're traumatized" instead of "we're both traumatized but i want to get better and i won't let you hold me back from that. you have to at least try" so it's... kinda gross?
the jesper and wylan changes are mostly fine but their relationship feels very rushed and i don't really understand what the point of doing that is. like jesper watching wylan play piano and having a moment about it felt like... nothing? because wlyan is just a guy he had a one night stand with. what new light is it shedding on a guy jesper doesn't really have any mis-formed preconceived notions on? and why are they already basically married? maybe this is just a personal preference but that's not fun to me. i am much more interested in watching them awkwardly fall for each other over time than having immediate confirmation that they're a couple.
(also i have a pretty big gripe with the way jesper being grisha is handled. but that's a whole other discussion.)
idk i guess the point i'm making is that s2 felt like a marvel movie. it had a lot of quippy one-liners and Big Emotional Beats that we knew were Big Emotional Beats because there was swelling music and lingering shots but there was no substance to any of it?? none of it mattered in the context of the story they were actually telling. it only matters if you already have a built-in connection to the story via the source material.
that being said: kaz bar brawl and nina spy competence = very sexy. and as much as i just talked a bunch of shit about jesper, he really is amazing. kit young continues to be an inspired stroke of jesper genius. almost everyone was perfectly cast, actually.
there were other things i liked and disliked about it but this is the general gist of where i'm at, i guess.

the darklins's death was so much better done in the books, with alina crying over him and giving him a proper funeral, it's like they took out all the decent darklina scenes from the second and third books just to make sure that people know that he's a villain
the darkling's everything was done so much better in the books 😭 i'm really disappointed with what they did with both the darkling and darklina storylines this season. we missed out on a lot and all i can do is praise ben barnes because i suspect without his influence we wouldn't have even gotten as many book quotes as we did (he's said he had ten book quotes he wanted to get in this season and worked them all in somehow). it felt so desperate to cement him as the villain when actually his story is so much more complex than that.
