Here's another game that I was excited about for the #yanjam to come out. This game is actually a sequel spinoff to another game the creator has made, Misfiction, which while you don't need to play, does help with fleshing out John as a character. That being said I will be talking about both games in this review since the yandere may or may not be a yandere depending on your mileage.

The story starts out with the main character, John watching the events of the previous game, Misfiction, basically talking about John kidnapping another person named Rylan, being locked up in his own route before eventually getting hit by a car. The story indicates that John got sent to jail from this event before being hit by the car and is greeted with the soul (?) of one of his innmates, Chase. Chase says that they're in a sort of purgatory of sorts and that they'll be together forever since they're both dead. Not wanting to deal with Chase the serial killer, he decides to talk to some thing, specifically a doll named Lola, who tells him to talk to an entity named Claire. When Claire refuses him because he's kind of a horrible person (you know, kidnapping people and whatnot), Lola suggests to him that he should make friends so that he can prove to Claire that he's a decent person. After that, John is tasked with essentially doing a bunch of errands for two girls named Nini and Rika (whom he eventually gets together) to make friends with Nini. After that, Claire still refuses to let him out since he's still kind of a dick, until he at least thanks Lola. Once John finds Lola however, she's been torn to shreds thanks to Chase who hunts John down. He eventually gets out returning to around when he gets hit by a car, starting the cycle again. In the true ending, Chase gets tired of watching John die and tries to let him go since he's no longer interested in him. John however, grows an interest in him and forces him to essentially stay together forever.

I really like the hardstyle for this game, actually more so than in the previous game Misfiction. While there's nothing wrong with Misfiction's art style, I think this one fits the game's more whimsical and terrifying feeling, reminiscent of old anime or something like Suki Suki Daisuki's art style. The effect of the filter also supports the more old timey and surreal atmosphere, since he's not really alive nor dead in this state.

In terms of yanderes, I was surprised to see that Chase wasn't the yandere in question, though in retrospect it does make sense for John to be one. Chase very clearly seems obsessed with John since the beginning, though in the end, he also very clearly states its more for a state of watching him suffer and die rather than having any romantic attachments towards him. John does a 180 and basically becomes interested in Chase and wants to spend an eternity with him. The thing is, it's hard to really determine what John actually feels in this moment. If we are comparing with his version in Misfiction, he kidnaps Rylan simply because he became interested in him after Rylan refused to move his seat once. Considering John is from a high class family, he probably was never used to being refused and developed an interest in him. It's made pretty clear in the beginning that he is at least not very knowledgeable about love and even just states that he "wants Rylan", though the way it's worded sounds more like he just wishes to possess him rather than love him. Then again, he also does extensive research on BL so that he can get Rylan to love him (which ultimately doesn't work, but he does try, I suppose). In this game, he seems to have really bad social skills considering he doesn't really know how to make friends and only cares to do so because he has an end goal of escaping. Just like he had interest in Rylan because he was the first one to be rude to him, he takes interest in Chase because he wishes to discard him (to which he says that it isn't right and that now he's developed an interest). But what determines as an "interest" isn't really defined, is he interested in him romantically or just in terms of an object to be possessed? It's hard to say and that's why I say it depends on your mileage because it depends on the interpretation of the last part of the game. Considering this game was made specifically for the yandere game jam, I think I would qualify him as a yandere, though not in the traditional way.

Other than that, I found the romance between Nini and Rika really cute and also really funny that John attempted to open the cabinet where the two were "making babies" to ask Nini if they were friends. I did have some peeves about this game as well, though it's pretty much only when Chase...chases John in the end. While I'm definitely not the best in games where I have to run away from something (I kept getting caught in Misfiction as well), there were times in the chase sequence that were sort of... unfair, to put it in best terms. I'm not talking about the shadow figures either, or the fact that I kept on bumping into walls, but rather that I found it really annoying when Chase catches you right after John transition to another room, where you're not able to run or do anything. It happens at really random intervals too, I found because even though I exited at the same space and was dashing, sometimes he would catch me while sometimes it would take a bit to catch up. It took me an ungodly amount of tries to not get caught.

Overall though, I did find the game really fun to do. Because I love interacting with everything in the game, I got most of the deaths pretty easily, which is good because I then I didn't have to scour afterwards to find the rest. The aesthetics are fun, the characters are interesting and it's really well made for a game jam. I hope you guys enjoyed playing it as much as I did.

honestly feel i gotta get this out rn. Dear Rylan Baker, i'm sorry for what i did. I don't want you to forgive me, please. What i did was unforgivable, and while i know that it's all 'technically' behind us, i still think about it. I was an awful fucking guy, and you were literally just trying to have a normal life. It was seriously fucked up. I'm so glad our source doesn't play it off as a good or romantic thing, and i'm glad you were able to get out of that thing i put you through. I hope you and Eugene were/are happy, genuinely. i want to thank you for putting me in jail as well, i think it was best for me, and the best for you. I hope you were able to get help to get through and cope with the trauma i left you with.

Plenty of pixel horror games include yanderes, but these indie games aren't for everyone. Pixel horror is an extremely unique genre, and most of the independently produced games are...weird.

I love them, but they can be tedious. Pixel horror games tend to be wordy and full of puzzles.

This developer, Hatoge, makes games that are easy to play. They're almost like light novels. This is one of their shorter games.

It's about an unfortunate student named Rylan. He woke up one day in a basement. His douchy rich classmate, John, has kidnapped him. John has a crush on him, and he's not good at dealing with rejection. When John told Rylan to become his he got grossed out and told John to piss off.

The game ends when Rylan escapes and John gets arrested.

The whole game is technically a parody that makes fun of certain boys love tropes. John is a real yandere, but everyone else is normal. When he kidnaps Rylan his victim just treats him like a weird guy, and the law punishes him for his actions.

John stars in a sequel with his own yandere.

(The sequel is better)

Misfiction is a free jrpg game developed by Hatoge. 

This game is simply awesome when it comes to the whumpy material. Nothing gory or graphic happens, but you do play as a man named Rylan trying to escape from John, another student at your university who kidnaps you after you turn down his romantic advances.

Several times you’ll encounter him around the mansion as you make your way out of it, and his dialogue is great intimate-whumper material. The art is also very nice. 

There is also an optional romance path that is rather sweet (Not with John, btw).

It takes around 30min~1 hour to complete. Gameplay consists of chase-scenes and puzzle solving.

Can be played on browser or on computer.

fae gamer moments! games i played this weekend, a review (part 2, sunday edition)

the diner: fairly short but i. Did not read the description before playing that is fully on me. has a good amount of endings but tw for yanderes 💀

dreambound: OKAY THIS ONE IS A DEMO and im fairly sure the full game isnt even released yet? but of all the things i tried this weekend this ones a HIGH recommend. its fairly wordy but you DO get one point and click escape thing which as you guys know i am a sucker for. also has supernatural elements, and men, and emotions so yeah i was dream bound to like it..... Hah....hahaha..... anyway. Also on steam! a gay romance sim w 3 routes iirc

dead horizon: short very short but VERY GOOD. not many comments but i really liked the art and just the whole gameplay was fun as a whole
