I don't know about you guys, but Doug's status as the only bachelor who is story locked until Act 3 doesn't give me "endgame romance" vibes, but "tragic love interest who cares greatly for the protagonist, but ultimately keeps quiet about their feelings until it's too late and ends up watching their crush get together with someone else" kind of vibes.
I mean something I noticed in terms of the bachelors' dialogue (which I'm assuming applies to the bachelorettes as well when playing as Lest) is that most of them start making it apparent that they have a thing for Frey once you get their LP to 7 hearts. Doug's dialogue, however stays relatively platonic even once his LP is no longer locked to 3, and while he starts talking more openly about stuff like how grateful he is to have started his life over in Selphia, I can't name any instance in his regular day-to-day dialogue where he gets flustered or drops hints he does genuinely like Frey as more than a friend, even after he's crossed that 7 LP threshold. There are a handful of exceptions, but it's mostly tied to dialogue that only occurs under specific circumstances, not just by talking to him daily.
...Which makes sense! His LP being hardlocked to 3 is because of the whole "Sechs spy" thing in the main plot, so obviously he's got to bottle up his feelings because of that; even after the truth comes to light and he switches sides, he chooses to keep his distance from the protagonist due to guilt and wanting to make up for being deceived. The other marriage candidates, meanwhile, don't have their LP locked for any plot-related reason, and so while the protagonist is getting closer and closer to everyone else, Doug is effectively being left behind because he's punishing himself for his actions. By the time Act 3 rolls around and he FINALLY allows himself to open up to Frey more, there is a very good chance that Frey is already dating/married to someone else, and so he has to keep quiet about his feelings for the sake of her happiness (unless the player has no interest in dating any of the other bachelors and is that hellbent on marrying Doug, in which case he always had a chance LMAO.)
It's also probably worth noting that while Act 3 is the point in the game where the player can finally romance Doug, Doug doesn't show up in any major cutscenes during the Memories event that allows the player to access the Rune Prana; previously, he was pretty consistent about his story appearances, but now he's just Not There. In other words, his role in the plot is done, and so anything that happens between him and the protagonist at that point is entirely up to player choice rather than because the plot said so. (Which, at least to me, really makes it feel like being able to date him is a reward for completing Act 2, and an optional one at that.)

Tag Meme: 9 Favorite Characters
tagged by @talysalankil
Gonna copy your "one per series/franchise" because otherwise there is a genuine risk Precures and TWEWYs would eat it whole. In no particular order, and with definite "What's on my mind right now" bias:
Xion (Kingdom Hearts)
Tumblr media
No surprise there, and yes, I did intentionally get a screenshot from the post-Riku fight for this.
2. Cure Grace/Nodoka Hanadera and Rabirin (Healin' Good Precure)
Tumblr media
(Look, they transform as a pair, their transformation phrase is "Two flowers as one," I'm counting them both. "Then shouldn't you use a screenshot of Cure Grace?" Shut up.)
3. Anthy Himemiya (Revolutionary Girl Utena)
Tumblr media
Yes, I saved this image as "Anthy Himemiya Is A Weird Girl Who Keeps Snails In Her Pencil Case."
4. Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu (The World Ends With You)
Tumblr media
... Yes, choosing his most insufferably smug dialogue sprite was necessary, why do you ask?
5. The Luidaeg (October Daye)
"I am the sea witch. I am the tide you fear and the turning you can't deny. I am the sound of the waves running over your bones on the beach, little man, and I am not amused at finding you on my doorstep." She took a step forward. He took a step back. "I won't punish you for obeying orders the way she would. But I can't let an insult go unanswered. You know how it goes." A smile twisted her lips. "I'm actually grateful. You see, there are... rules... that govern what I can and can't do. But you broke them first. Now I get to do something I don't get to do very often. Now I get to play." ... "What did you do?" "Nothing they hadn't allowed by coming onto my territory. Every soul who came here on the Queen's business will go home, go to bed, and sleep soundly, dreaming the sweetest of dreams." Something about that statement had teeth. I paused, and then ventured, "For how long?" The Luidaeg smiled brilliantly. "Until something wakes them up. True love, childbirth, and bees are all on the table."
(Chimes at Midnight, Chapter Seven, pages 91-92) The wiki also uses the "I am the sea witch" bit as her epigraph but as a known lover of "true love, childbirth, and bees are all on the table" I felt it best to include the full exchange.
6. Lio Fotia (Promare)
Tumblr media
(This BARELY beat out something from the Kakusei sequence but I love how fluffy his hair is as he tosses it.)
7. Ventuswill/Venti (Rune Factory 4)
Tumblr media
Tragic immortal dragon god BFF <3
8. Moist von Lipwig (Discworld)
Never promise to do the possible. Anyone could do the possible. You should promise to do the impossible, because sometimes the impossible was possible, if you could find the right way, and at least you could often extend the limits of the possible. And if you failed, well, it had been impossible.
(Going Postal) Okay, it's him and Vimes, but I figured I'd go for Moist for the variety since everyone loves Vimes.
9. Okay there were a LOT of characters I considered for this, like, seriously, I went from "hm I can't think of anyone" to "ugh I have TOO MANY options" in very little time, but ultimately, while this might be recency bias at the moment, it is also true:
Missile (Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective)
Tumblr media
The goodest boy in gaming.
(Runners-up from things that aren't otherwise represented here include Surge the Tenrec from Sonic IDW, Miles Naismith Vorkosigan from the Vorkosigan Saga, Rose Aleon from Birdie Wing, Grovyle from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers, and huge enough swathes of the casts of Dumbing of Age and Girl Genius that I just didn't even bother trying to narrow those down.)
Tagging: In general assume I do this as an open invite to anyone seeing it, but just to name a couple people, @thesternest, @denizenhardwick, @mehanios, @purplelea, @yurisorcerer, @yoshiyakiryu

i kinda think rune factory maybe should go back to branding itself as “a fantasy story of seasons” or “story of seasons: rune factory” for recognition or something, especially after rune factory 5 was kind of… bad. it just does not seem to be fully reaching that audience. you’ll see cozy fantasy farming gamers out here burning hours on some real shovelware tier shit before they even seen to remember that rune factory 3 or 4 special exist.

Raku Plays...Something: Adventure Bar Story
The other day, I got a notice on my poor aging 3DS that by the end of May, I’d no longer be able to access the Nintendo eShop through it. I still had some credits I wanted to use up, so I took a chance on this one game that had been sitting on my wishlist for years: Adventure Bar Story.
The reason I originally added it was because the premise sounded kind of fun. Instead of going on an epic quest to save the world, this RPG revolves around saving your bar from being bought out by your rival, a richer and much more successful restaurant owner across town. You and your party fight monsters and travel to different towns in order to gather ingredients and find new recipes to revitalize your business.
The mechanics of the game work well enough, even if they aren’t always adequately explained. Over the past couple of days, I’ve spent more time than I care to admit completing recipes and choosing what goes on the menu each day. (There has to be a variety of dishes, otherwise your customers get tired of the same food being served over and over and stop coming.) You also are encouraged to enter a Royal Cooking Contest whenever it comes up; if you do well, it brings much-needed publicity to your bar - although it’s never explained if you just win by chance, or if there’s anything you can actually do to improve the quality of your dishes.
Going into dungeons and battling is something you do mostly to pick up ingredients. Defeating monsters does grant you some kind of experience points that teach your characters new skills, but it doesn’t actually level them up. That’s done by eating some of the dishes you make. Different dishes give different levels of EXP, and also confer some bonuses like increased strength or cold resistance, but it’s never clear how much food our characters can eat before they get full, or if the bonuses stack (they don’t, as far as I can tell).
Unfortunately, the mechanics are about all this game has going for it. The graphics are okay, even though our main character’s walk cycle is unnaturally sped up, like she’s desperately looking for a restroom. The music is fine but not particularly memorable. All the characters I’ve encountered so far, including the main one, are as bland as a bread sandwich. It would probably have helped a little bit to be able to make a custom protagonist and rename our party members, but sadly the game doesn’t have those options. Then again, the plot is so anemic and the story so clumsily told, maybe not even that little bit of fun could save it.
Overall, Adventure Bar Story is...fine. It’s not amazing, not going to revolutionize gaming, or win any awards for originality anytime soon, but it’s fine. I’ll probably play it some more just to see if there’s any kind of plot twist or anything, but based on what I’ve seen so far, I doubt there will be. If you like games where you basically be a manager and focus on making a profit, or if you just need a way to quickly kill some time, you might like Adventure Bar Story. But if you’re looking for a good story populated with multi-faceted characters, or innovative gameplay, skip this one.

Sorry I haven’t been on in a hot minute, I’ve finally gotten the chance to play DND and I’ve been a bit obsessed trying to flesh out my character.
Anyways, she’s a rock gnome Druid who acts like a stereotypical grandma (she’s over 800 years old) because she thinks it’s funny.
I love her.

Rating Rune Factory Children
(Because I play favorites)
Rune Factory (1)
1/10
Cute but not much else to say. You have to wait a ridiculous amount of in-game time to get one short cutscene meeting your genderless nameless child (Game doesn't even bother to give them pronouns) and then never get to interact with them again. Disappointing.
Tumblr media
Rune Factory 2
8/10
A unique idea that the series has yet to implement again, this game let you play through the second half of the game AS your child from the first half, and honestly It was a cool concept even if the gameplay got a little wonky and unbalanced near the end. The game also introduced the first female protagonist to the series, Aria (left). She and her twin Aaron (right) actually had some personality of their own and even had unique interactions with the other villagers and children of the town. Cool concept and solid designs. I just wish you could interact with them a little more as a parent before the timeskip.
Tumblr media
Rune Factory Frontier
7/10
I may be a little biased here, as this was my intro to Rune Factory, but I love these kids. Default names; Leif and Leona, are the first, and so far only, RF children you can interact with at multiple stages, these kids have several cutscenes documenting different milestones and are quite cute to watch. Once they reach the final stage, they don't do much besides toddle around the farm and look cute. You can gift them certain items but that's about it. Still, It's refreshing to watch your kid grow over time as apposed to the usual montage you get with RF kids.
Tumblr media
Rune Factory 3/ Rune Factory 3 Special
3/10
They get bonus points for being the first in the series to let you have multiple kids (up to three) problem is, there's not much difference between em. The birth of each one plays about the same and while there's technically some different "personalities" it's more like each kid get a random lot of four or so unique lines of dialogue and that's it. There are also just the two sprites so if you have two or more of either gender they'll be identical, no matter the age difference. You can't gift them and they don't sleep, leave the house or even show up on the map. Honestly they're little more than cute house accessories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rune Factory Tides of Destiny/ Rune Factory Oceans
4/10
First off, please pardon the crappy quality. This game doesn't have traditional character portraits so it's hard to find decent quality pics. Tides of Destiny kiddos were the first in the series to inherit physical features from the player's spouse. (Pictured are Electra's daughter and Sonja's son) They appear to use the same child models as Frontier with some minor cosmetic changes but I liked Frontier's kids so no complaints there. I do wish they had real portraits and more dialogue but they're okay. At least they'll accept gifts and the events leading up to their births are quite wholesome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rune Factory 4/Rune Factory 4 Special
9/10
RF4's kids are darn near perfect. Luna and Noel have identical dialogue but they have more to say than any RF kids before or possibly since. There are TONS of unique exchanges and events with them, they participate in festivals, and most interesting of all, you can equip them with gear and take them adventuring! These babies are really something special. If I had to pick one complaint, I'd say I wish they looked liiiittle more like their concept art. They look like they both got aged up a little, which isn't bad but they do look barely younger than some of their possible parents...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rune Factory 5
9.5/10
Rune Factory 5's children are right up there with Noel and Luna, but they get a slight advantage when it comes to customization. Like RF3 this game lets you have up to three kids, but unlike that game, these kiddos are treated like actual characters. Depending on your choice of spouse and your answers in a particular conversation, your kids can have a variety of looks and personalities, including the fan favorite feature of inheriting hair and eye colors from the spouse, and continuing along that customization train, these babies can once again go adventuring! My one, one small gripe...It'd be nice if your eldest could grow a little by the time their siblings are born. Heck, it'd be cool if the villagers kids could grow too. I'd love to see teenaged Julian and Hina~
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So there's my thoughts on the Rune Factory children. I hope future installments continue the trend of more giving their kids more personality and better customization, maybe someday we'll even see kiddos inherit traits from non-human parents? How cool would that be if your kid could actually look half elf or mermaid or furry wereanimal? XD
If you agree with me (or strongly disagree) feel free to comment. Always up for discussing my favorite franchise~
when fe3h's plot first started to leak on sites like gamefaqs/4chan pre release, and it was revealed that the main lord would be a woman romanceable as a woman, I genuinely cried. i was so excited to hear that after fates, that not only would a woman be integral to the story but you could finally be gay for someone integral to the story? the idea of it seemed unbelievable especially to teenage me. and then when it turned out it wasnt just her but other amazing characters like dorothea too? and these characters would also be textually bisexual outside of the protagonist? theres literally no other jrpg series even letting you do extensive gay romance besides rune factory 5 iirc. thats why i would personally always rather have the fanservice than not. and i think engage shows they are willing to start going the extra mile with mlm options too! i just don't think people appreciate how insane it is that FE does this. the bar is low, but gay marriage still isnt even legal in japan. if it wasnt for fanservice selling enough to override the risk of including content that might alienate a more conservative audience, we would have never gotten it in the first place. so thank niles and rhajat for their service...🫡
Tee, I'm adding another fandom to our Isekai Protagonist Desmond bunny bank. I finally got around to playing Rune Factory 5 (after being distracted by a bevy of other games) and was hit by the idea that Desmond would find eating BREAD to gain new crafting recipes to be really fucking wild. Like. How in the hell?! And that, to separate them from normal bread- they're. They're just. They're just called [Insert Craft] Bread and that's it.
For example! You want to make a potion? Gonna have to scarf down some Chemistry Bread! A new battle-axe with added poison damage? Weapon Bread! Wanna learn how to make some, I dunno, soup dumplings to woo the local wolfman himbo? (Or himbo wolfman, either way he's pure of heart and dumb of ass.) Well, you might need to level up your cooking skill but once you've gotten a level (or three or ten), then you might get lucky after chowing down three or four Cooking Breads but when you don't get any sudden bursts of enlightenment after that then you're gonna need to level up again!
All of it might have Desmond questioning reality some more but at least he's got some eye-candy to make up for it all! (And we could even make some of the potential husbands local expies of his usual AC partners. And yes, you can choose to romance and marry your own gender now in RF and it's non-fantasy sibling game Story of Seasons.)
(Just in case anyone is wondering, Story of Seasons is the real Harvest Moon sequels, not whatever ‘Harvest Moon’ game Natsume Inc is publishing. If you’re wondering if it’s a real ‘Harvest Moon’, any Harvest Moon released in the US by 2014 named ‘Harvest Moon’ are not part of the real series under Marvelous/Xseed)
Okay, so let’s talk about Desmond waking up in some weird place he has no idea ever existed in his own world. People assumed he has amnesia because he ‘forgot’ so many things about their world but Desmond is pretty sure he’s been transported to a different world.
Exhibit A: monsters.
Exhibit B: the logic behind these… ‘specialized’ breads.
So Desmond is left with no choice but to… well… go with the flow.
He has no idea why they gave him a farm though but… it was nice.
There was something nice about how everyone was helpful. It made Desmond feel like he was truly part of Rigbarth. SEED sounded fishy as hell though so he didn’t agree to joining them (also, he didn’t want to join any organization right now).
Overall…
Desmond liked to think of this as his retirement.
And it was fun trying to figure out how this world works. There was a lot to do for the farm but, even though that was true, Desmond had never felt more relaxed.
There were also a lot of kind people who didn’t mind joining him in exploring what lies beyond Rigbarth.
Hell, he even got a monster ranch going on in one part of his farm.
And then…
A man with amnesia going by the name Lucas arrived in town and…
He believes he knows Desmond.
He doesn’t seemed to remember when or how though but it was a clue. A clue to why Desmond had been sent here…
But the real question is…
If he finds the answer to his questions… would he be able to return to his old world?
Did… did he even want to?
Unorganized Notes:
I kinda like the idea that the bachelors and bachelorettes remain who they are and this will be a case of Desmond finding love in the ‘strangest’ of places.
His children though… the game gives 3 (1 older and twins) so that means we can have Desmond’s children be reincarnations of Altaïr, Ezio and Ratonhnhaké:ton (called Connor in this one). The twist can be hidden at the beginning on and Desmond learns they’re really his ancestors later on. This does mean that you’re free to choose who Desmond falls in love with (or make it a vote idk).
Considering Lucas’ true identity in the game, this might end up being one of those “eternal love” setup where Lucas used to be an Isu who created the world Desmond is sent in as some kind of simulated universe and placed his conscious there to escape the Solar Flare millenias ago. Minerva’s last ditch effort to save Desmond pushed him into the Grey and Lucas noticed that Juno was trying to take him so he grabbed Desmond and yanked him to his ‘safe world’. Lucas lost his memories because Desmond isn’t part of his world so Desmond’s sudden appearance caused a chain reaction that ended with Lucas’ amnesia (as he’s being repaired). His children being ‘reborn’ is actually his Bleeds gaining their own bodies.
Will Desmond make his own Brotherhood in this one? Probably not. At most, he’d teach his children Assassin-like tricks to help them be safe but not train him the way Bill did. That’s why it took a while for Desmond to realize his children are his ‘ancestors’. Ezio was the one who realized something fishy was going on at the start because (1) his older brother is named Altaïr and (2) one of his parents is named Desmond. The monster and fantasy-esque setting of the world he was reborn in offkiltered him a bit though XD
Up to you if you want to have an actual ‘oh the world is in danger… sorta’ plot as well or you just push it in the background with Lucas and Radea and let Desmond have his retirement.
