rufio looks perplexed, but it's impossible to hide his laughing smile.
Peter had heard the sounds of someone nearing, but had made no effort flee. It'd do no good for certain people to see him in his current blood-splattered state. However, he recognized the heavy footfalls as no threat to him and so he'd remained in plain sight, sitting atop a large rock at the base of the island's mountain range. Peter tucked away the dagger he'd been wiping clean, turning his head to look up at Rufio as he approached.
"It's not my fault all the best adventures involve a little bloodshed," He proclaimed cheerfully, offering up no explanation of where the blood had originated from. Such details were best left unspoken. Besides, Rufio was the newest to join the group. Peter wasn't sure exactly how loyal he'd shape up to be just yet.
He stood giving a shrug accompanied by a grin that was wide and unabashed. His eyes gleamed with mischief as he went on to say, "And why waste time on anything other than the best, right Rufio?"

——— WENDY WAS UP IN AN INSTANT, grinning, unable to hide her excitement. sword-fighting was her newest fascination and delight. true, she’d told plenty of stories involving swords before, but it was different now. now she had one of her own, claimed as a trophy from the pirates and kept near her person at all times.
in truth, it wasn’t the most impressive blade. not particularly beautiful or well-made and it was a terrible shame that the weapon’s previous owner evidently hadn’t been too fussed over caring properly for it. but wendy loved it and made a great deal of marching about with it on her hip or of meticulously cleaning the blade after supper time ( though in truth the weapon hadn’t spilt a drop of blood since coming into her hands and her diligent polishing was entirely pointless ).

rufio : ‘ bad dream? ’ / ‘ how long have you been like this? ’
“ game over, wendy-bird. “
he’s clipped her wings, caught her in a trap. she’d started this game when he found her whetting her knives on stone, and when he’d heard her plans of ‘hunting peter.’
if only she’d kept it to herself– perhaps he might have ignored it. let her try, let her fail, and pan would have forgiven her. then wendy could have come home. the light in her tree would be on again– beckoning the boys in the dark. they could curl on her carpet and listen to her stories. they could sleep and dream to the song of wendy-bird’s voice.
but she’d asked rufio to help. to kill pan. he didn’t like that game. but he’s good at them so he played along. drew up plans and sharpened his knives too. not for peter. never for peter.
he’d promised to lure their king to the forest. snap him up and tie him tight– but it’s wendy on her knees instead. there’s stains on the rope, seeping and dark from open wounds and a too tight snare. “ it was a good game. ” rufio shares. “ i almost lost. ”
you almost tempted me.
he takes a knee. a white butterfly lands on her blood and turns red, it’s long tongue burrowing into the fibers of the rope. another joins it– until there’s a swarm around her. a crimson fluttering of wings.
he doesn’t want to draw it out. he loves his wendy-bird.
but this is the game. these are the rules. and it ends with the knife between wendy’s ribs, and a brush of lips to her temple.
“maybe you’ll win next time.”
he startles awake.
“ rufio? “ her voice in the dark. he reaches– finding the curve of her cheek, soft and warm and real. “ bad dream? ”
he tucks her hair behind her ear, and rolls their bodies towards the slash of moonlight to see her better. wendy’s heart beats under his palm, and she’s breathing, breathing, thank the sky she’s breathing– as he hovers over her, every exhale warm into the part of his mouth.
“ just a dream. ” he promises. “ just a dream, wendy-bird. just a dream. ”
