thinking about the first time rue was brave enough to confess their feelings, not even to the man himself, to their dearest friend, in private, it spiralled into humiliation in front of the whole bloom as the two people they cared about most in the world fought for blood and honour
and then revealing their true self, to face the consequences and censure of all the courts, to bear their monstrous face and say we’re alike? does that help? will this change your mind?
and then to have the bravery to try again, to keep reaching out, to dance with him, to write another letter.
and he doesn’t even have the decency to respond. they’re not worth the dignity of even a polite refusal.
and then they see him on the arm of another. a slender, beautiful fairy, treating him gently and kindly.
then he storms over and accuses them of malice, of plotting against his court and his values to maintain the status quo and deceiving him, of being callous and cruel when all they’ve ever tried to do is put love first.
and maybe he has seen rue. all of rue. their spite and pettiness and fragility. what they really are. and maybe that’s why he doesn’t care.
and all rue can say in their own defence is ‘i love you. i love you. does that help? does it soften the blow? please. i love you. listen to me. i love you. is that enough?’
