After school, Dax did his usual thing. His time being grounded was up and he was allowed to go hang out with his friends again, so long as he let his Mom know where he was at all times. She didn’t need to know the details of what they were doing and he wasn’t exactly specific about where he was, just that he was with Jesus and Lester.
Today, he found Jesus in a state. His friend had started in on the Bubbles ahead of him and seemed to be having a bad trip of it, sitting there with his head held in his hands. “You okay, dude?” Dax asked, coming to stand behind him and putting a hand on Jesus’s shoulders, leaning down to try and see his face.
“I’m in over my head,” Jesus complained. “Don wants me to sell way more than I’m able to.”
“You’re selling for him now?” Dax asked, shocked that his friend would get so far into this whole with with Don Lothario.
“It’s the only way he’d still sell to me,” Jesus told him.

“Thanks, Parker, for helping your sister deal with all of this,” Allan told his oldest daughter after the two girls had helped clean up the kitchen. Maggie went upstairs to go play while Eris took Nathaniel to get ready for bed. Parker stayed downstairs to hang out with her father and looked over at him with a proud smile on her face.
“I don’t think she understands that he’s not sick,” Parker told him. “He’s just...different.”
Allan nodded his head. “That’s very insightful of you,” he told her, leaning back on the couch and watching her thoughtfully. “We’re all going to need to learn a little bit more about what we’re dealing with here. But we can keep you informed, maybe even bring you along to some of the doctor appointments if you want?”
“I’d like that,” Parker smiled.

Concentrating on homework that night was difficult. Dax kept thinking about Nathaniel and how his life was going to be different now. He’d never go to be in a normal classroom, never play sports on a normal sports team. Normal had a whole different meaning for him now and maybe that wasn’t a fair thought to have, but Dax was having them anyway.
At school, they had the special education students that no one really hung out with. Now his brother was going to be one of those students when he went to school and Dax hated that thought. He hated the thought of all the other kids thinking his brother was weird or different or whatever else kids thought of them. He hated all of it and closed his textbook in frustration, looking up at the pictures that Nathaniel had drawn which were now tacked to their corkboard. He’d have to protect him. Have to let him know that those other kids didn’t matter. All that mattered was Nathaniel was loved by his family.

By the time he got home, his parents were still up waiting for him. Allan met him at the door while his Mom was inside with Nathaniel. Things looked serious and for a second, Dax thought he was busted, his high still hanging on a little bit. He tried to look as sober as possible in front of his Dad.
He did not expect what came next.
“We need to talk to you about Nathaniel.”
The family sat down in the living room with Nathaniel sitting on Eris’s lap. The girls sat on the couch next to Dax while Allan stood in front of them all and Dax didn’t think he’d ever seen his parents be so serious before. He knew in the next moment just how serious it was. His parents told him that they’d gotten Nathaniel tested and that he had some cognitive developmental complications. In other words, his doctors had put him on the autism spectrum. They told the kids that they were going to need their help in being patient with him, a little more help around the house sometimes as Nathaniel would take up a lot of their time.
Dax watched his little brother while they were talking and felt torn. He didn’t want that for his little brother. Didn’t want that for his family. But there was no changing it, nothing they could do other than learn to live with it.
“Dax?” Eris asked gently and Dax looked over at his Mom, realizing he’d been spacing with a sad look on his face. “We’re especially going to look to you, okay? We’re going to need your help with this.”
“Of course, Mom,” Dax said, nodding his head and all the thoughts about helping Jesus sell for Don Lothario came flooding back. His family could really use the extra money, he supposed. But he’d have to be sneaky about it, because they couldn’t know where it was coming from.

The minute Dax left Jesus behind, he texted his Mom to let him know he was on the way home. He’d learned his lesson with that one and even though he was high off of Bubbles, he still had the wherewithin about him to let his Mom know he was on the way. The last thing he wanted was to be grounded again.
And as he made his way home, he kept thinking about Jesus and the fact that he was selling for Don Lothario. It was crazy to think about and it was even crazier to think that Jesus wanted him to help out. There was no way he could do it, right? No way he could sell Bubbles to other kids at his school, the consequences if he was caught would be too much. This wasn’t like getting in trouble with his parents, this was on a whole different level of illegal. Still, it was tempting the more he thought about it. Especially with how much he saw Jesus wanted him to be a part of it. They were supposed to be blood brothers, part of the 313s, had grown up together. Could he really deny his friend something like this?

After class, Dax headed towards his locker, ready to head out for the day. He passed by Allison talking to some of her friends and couldn’t help but stare for a moment, feeling a smile cross his lips. Gosh, she was pretty. He smirked to himself, not feeling shy about it when he passed her by and said, “Hey, Allison.”
She stopped talking to her friends and looked over at him. Her friends looked him up and down, giving him a face, but Allison gave an almost shy smile his way. “Hey, Dax,” she said and it was the first time he thought he ever heard her say his name. He walked backwards for a second, still heading towards his locker as he gave her a cocky grin. She shook her head at him, turned around and burst into giggles with her friends. Smooth, Dax thought to himself.

Of all the classes Dax had in high school so far, Geometry was one of his favorite. It was interesting learning the logic behind things and it had him wondering if one day he didn’t want to go into something mathematical or engineering. Maybe something like what his Mom did, but less...earthy.
Plus, there was a girl in the class that Dax had a crush on. He hated it. Hated that he had a crush because he didn’t want anything to do with relationships while he was in high school, but this girl was absolutely stunning. Skin pale as snow and beautiful blonde hair. Allison was her name and she was smart like he was with geometry, always answering the teacher’s questions whenever Dax didn’t feel like raising his hand.

Mrs. Phillips didn’t like Dax’s response to Juliette and she made sure to let him know that his behavior wasn’t appreciated. Dax thought not for the first time that this whole authority thing was a bit stupid. She was a vice principal who thought she had rule of the world and if you weren’t in her favor, then you weren’t deserving of respect. That’s the way he saw it, anyway.
After getting chewed out by the vice principal and getting an apologetic look from Juliette, Dax made his way to class finally. He really hated high school more and more and he was only a freshman. Four years seemed like a long time to have to endure this and he wasn’t looking forward to the rest of it. It made him wish he could skip class and just go do some Bubbles with his friends. Just something to take the edge off.

The girls got straight to work doing their part for the family. Parker instructed Maggie to help out their parents by cleaning up the kitchen and Maggie took out the trash while Parker did the dishes. It was the least they could do. While Parker didn’t really understand what autism was, her parents had tried to explain it to her in a way that made sense. Things were going to be different for her brother and wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense to Parker sometimes.
When Maggie came back in from taking out the trash, they dried the dishes and put them away and Parker looked at her younger sister. “What do you think about all of it?” she asked her.
“So there’s no medicine he can take to get better?” Maggie asked quietly.
Parker shook her head. “I don’t think so,” she told her, again not knowing a whole lot about autism but she was smart enough to know what her parents had told her. That this wasn’t really a disease, that there was no “cure” for what he had and that they were going to have to get used to a new normal that could be frustrating at times.

“So, that went over well,” Allan said as the kids filtered out to the rest of the house. Eris still looked a little skeptical, but she eventually sighed with some relief now that it was over.
“I’m sure they’re going to have questions,” she said. “Once it all settles in.”
Allan nodded and the two of them sat there for a long moment, just trying to get past their thoughts. Having a child with autism wasn’t something they had thought they’d have to deal with. Eris had been noticing some things here and there with Nathaniel and it was good that she finally took him in with those concerns. Now they knew what they were dealing with and that was the first step in dealing with it. No, not dealing, she had to remind herself. Embracing. Her child was not a burden. And was never going to be. This was just something they were going to have to learn to live with.
“Hey,” Allan nudged her knee gently with his and she looked over at him. “It’s going to be alright. You know that, right?”
“We’ve got a good family,” she replied. “I’m just...I wish I could talk to my Dad.”
Allan smiled, knowing how much Eris missed her departed father. Times like this were really hard on her, when she was dealing with stuff she normally would have went to her father for advice over.

“I don’t know if it’s worth all this, Dax said. Don Lothario was a scary dude, even when he wasn’t trying to be. Selling for him was going to be something that got Jesus into a lot of trouble, he just knew it. So it made what Jesus had to say next all the more ridiculous.
“You could help me? Sell to a whole new population at your school,” Jesus looked enthusiastic about it for half a second, but Dax’s face at the prospect was enough to burn that enthusiasm away.
“There’s no way I’m doing that,” Dax told him. Using Bubbles was one thing. But selling it? And selling it to his classmates? There was so much that could go wrong there. So much that could happen and if he got in trouble with his parents for using, he could imagine the punishment would be severe. For selling it, he couldn’t even picture how his Mom, let alone Allan, would take it. He was a cop, he’d probably send him straight to jail.
“Come on, Dax, it’s a literal gold mine, we just have to get enough buyers,” Jesus tried to convince him. “Between you and me, we’d be sitting on a small fortune.”
“I’m not interested.”

“Say cheese!” came a voice from around the corner and Dax pulled to a stop in the middle of the hallway, hearing the click of a camera from a phone. He made a face, not for the camera, just one of confusion and looked at who he’d run into. Juliette was a freshman, like him, who worked for the school newspaper and she stood next to Mrs. Phillips, the vice principal.
“What’s that for?” Dax demanded, a bit perterbed to be stopped in the hall like this on his way to class.
“School newspaper. I need some candid pictures of real students going about their day,” Juliette said, grinning at the picture she’d snapped at him. Dax rolled his eyes, hating that he didn’t have a say in this and then tried to walk past her.
“Can I go now?” he grumbled.
“Mr. Thorne-Zest, you should be more courteous to Ms. Lynx here. She does fine work with the newspaper every week.”
Dax couldn’t stop himself before saying, “I couldn’t care less.”

Dax had decided early on that he hated high school. He was bored most of the time and without Lester and Jesus going to the same school as him, he didn’t have his gang to really back him up here. Still, it didn’t mean high school came without perks. It was an excuse to get out of the house and there were people here that he didn’t mind. Mostly he just stuck to himself, kind of the outcast in his classes and he didn’t really mind it.
It was after school where he could be himself. Go to the old ruins and hang with his friends. His Mom wanted him to join some after school activity or something, at one point she’d threatened that he might need to get a job, but so far she hadn’t followed through on that threat. He had no interest in either of those things. He just wanted to be himself and do his own thing and he didn’t see anything wrong with that.
