The Devil's Foot, Part 3 of 3
Tumblr media
So Mortimer poison-gassed his siblings, for presumably monetary reasons. Looking back at his behavior in the first letter, it's neat to see his anxious behavior re-contextualized to something more sinister.
Tumblr media
Holmes has already proven himself to be excellent at sneaking and following people. The fact he did it to some big-game hunter just makes it even more impressive.
Tumblr media
Holmes has been called much worse by too many people for something as small as the devil to ever be considered an insult. And I also appreciate Watson for recognizing that fact.
Tumblr media
That's two stories in a row now decrying the state of English divorce laws. But The Abbey Grange was first published in 1904, while this story was published in 1910. So unfortunately I guess not much changed in those six years.
Tumblr media
There's the devil's foot! It's an exotic poison of some kind, which is par for the course for Sherlock Holmes mysteries. For some reason, my memory of this story involved there being an actual devil's footprint somewhere that had to be parsed out. I don't know where I got that from.
Tumblr media
On one hand I get it, you don't want to make a bad impression on your lover's brother. And I'm sure in Sterndale's mind the last person Mortimer would hurt would be his own sister.
On the other hand, someone asking for the specific and necessary ways to use a poison should surely set off some red flags. If it weren't his siblings, Sterndale should have realized that someone was going to get hurt.
Tumblr media
And that's also two stories in a row where Holmes just lets the killer go, both wherein said killer was fueled by their love for a woman. But again, I think that's kind of par for the course for Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
Tumblr media
Man, imagine if Watson was hurt in some way and Holmes almost lashes out in anger and revenge for it. That sure would be something.
All in all, a great story. So good that Conan Doyle himself named it his ninth favorite of his top twelve Holmes stories, calling it "grim and new," which is pretty apt.
The Dancing Men next. Yay!

Roundhay Park Ghost
One Family got a severe case of the creeps after seeing a ‘spectral figure’ in the background photo bombing this shot of two children in front of an 1812 building. The spooky picture of Mayrian Islam, 11, and nine-year-old Ryhan Kaliqwas was taken in Roundhay Park, Leeds, West Yorkshire, next to the Victorian folly. On closer inspection a strange cloaked figure is standing on steps in the background, but the family insist no one else was there at the time.

Roundhay Garden Scene (1888) Louis Le Prince
Roudhay Garden Scene is the second film made by French inventor Luis Aimé Augustin Le Prince, who had developed a camera capable of filming at a speed of 12 frames per second. This is the second known film document. The first was shot by Le Prince himself, but was lost. This scene lasting just two seconds was shot on October 14, 1888 in the garden of Le Prince House in Leeds. The four characters we see are members of Le Price's family, his son Adolphe, his parents-in-law Joseph and Sarah Whitley, and Annie Hartley, probably a friend of his wife Elizabeth.

Letters From Watson Liveblog - Sep. 13
The Devil's Foot, Part 2 of 3
Tumblr media
Getting letters from Watson has really got me noticing trends in these stories I never noticed before, like how often Holmes will take Watson on a walk through nature after looking around a gruesome crime scene.
Tumblr media
"Diabolical intrusions" is such a polite way to say the devil's involved. Speaking of, for a story titled "The Devil's Foot," neither the devil nor his feet have really been prominent. So far it makes more sense for the story to be called "The Cornish Horror."
Tumblr media
The gruff and solitary lion-hunter "Leon Sterndale?" Might as well call him "Lionel Seriousman" while you're at it.
Anyways, he's oddly interested in the case and he's a new character, so if we're ruling out the devil then I guess Mr. Sterndale here becomes a prime suspect.
Tumblr media
It was mentioned in the first letter that the Tregennis siblings had all sold some profitable mining ventures and retired. So I imagine that in a version of this story where the devil was actually a possibility, they had actually all made a deal with him to retire wealthy, and now he's come back to collect on the debts.
Tumblr media
What an odd way to be sexist. "Women are so much more sensitive than men, as evidenced by the way they die faster to poisonous gas."
Tumblr media
"I have deduced the cause of the deaths and lunacy was poisonous gas. And to test my theory I will now breathe in said poisonous gas."
And yeah, the window's open, but it's still an unnecessarily risky and dangerous thing to do.
Tumblr media
This is lovely though. Watson breaking through the horror of the gas, something so strong that even Holmes underestimated, all because he caught a glimpse of Holmes looking like the dead victims. It's the care and the love overpowering even the most horrific of nightmares. It's great.
Tumblr media
No shit, Holmes. But it's nice to see him understand his mistake, show gratitude to Watson, and also apologize for doing it. This moment kind of makes the "unjustifiable" nature of the experiment worth it for me.
Tumblr media
And Watson is, as ever, the dearest partner anyone could ask for.
