Ron Trent - What do the stars say to you - the lushest blend of electronica & jazz fusion you could ever ask for, with guest spots from Jean-Luc Ponty, Gigi Masin, Khruangbin, and more
In 1990 Ronald Lee Trent Jr. was the teenage creator of Altered States – a raw, futuristic techno-not-techno anthem, which in retrospect was something of a stylistic anomaly for the young artist. Across subsequent years, with time spent in Chicago, New York and Detroit, came the development of his signature sound, and renown as a world class purveyor of deep, soul infused house/garage. This story has already been told, and on casual inspection, the well-worn platitude ‘house music legend’ is an old shoe that still fits. However, in fact, he’s actually so much more, and has been for quite a while. A genuine musician, songwriter, and ‘producer’ in the proper, old-school sense, the artist today has more in common with Quincy Jones than he does your average journeyman DJ track-hack. To those in the know, these broader skills haven’t gone unnoticed, which is why on the highly collaborative, career-topping new LP ‘What Do The Stars Say To You’, it took little persuasion to recruit serious star power. Brazilian royalty Ivan Conti and Alex Malheriros from Azymuth, violin maestro Jean Luc Ponty, ambient hero Gigi Masin, hype band Khruangbin and more performed, whilst NY cornerstone François K provided mastering duties. At various points Ron himself played drums, percussion, keys, synths, piano, guitar and electronics.
Aside from these esteemed guests, other key influences cited by Trent include ‘Gigolos Get Lonely Too’ by Prince, ‘Beyond’ by Herb Alpert, David Mancuso, Jan Hammer, Tangerine Dream, The Cars, Trevor Horn, Alan Parsons Project and pre-Kraftwerk incarnation Organization. A multitude of others are audible too, including George Bension, Vangelis, Loose Ends, Maze, Flora Purim, Weather Report, Atmosphere, Grace Jones, James Mason and Brass Construction. Harking back to the 70s and 80s boom in adventurous, luxurious albums, WDTSSTY is a love letter to the longplayer, where rich musicality and a liquid smooth, silky flow make seemingly odd genre bedfellows acquiesce harmoniously. Each song its own high-fidelity odyssey, Trent incorporated a broad range of live instruments and electronics into a sophisticated, euphonic whole. Described by him as being “designed for harmonising with spirit, urban life and nature”, this is aural soul food, gently easing you into balmy nights, where everything is alright.

So much love for Ron Trent, could be “most collected artist.”
Is that a spotify category, artist you own the most things by? Not exactly catchy.
I should get a branding agency involved to write this stuff, get some brevity in here …
From those bin shaking Prescription days, the soul searching Clairaudience vibes, amid the introspective noughties releases, and onwards to his contemporary realm of proto balearic post future new age, a spiritual heart beats.
Spiritual not in a gospel sampley, lets take this to church claps way - much as I love those moments - spiritual in the deeper, metronomic, older than the bible, innate wisdom of heavy universal frequencies.
I’m always interested in what Ron is doing, one ear on the dancefloor and one poised for deep time. Mindful of culture, history, the legacy set by his forebears and ancestors, yet always current. Still pushing, leading, relevant, important, now. The metamodern ideal of past awareness and forward thinking.

How many mid 90’s house 12’s referenced this kind of pseudo deepthink, and how many of them still carry this level of weight, or could you even listen to now, or even name?
Some selections: the much lauded, wide angled new album, a couple of bandcamp releases, a late entry for this BadBadNotGood remix ft. Laraaji, and the first of 3 NTS shows under his guise of WARM.

We all need this warmth, in every way.
Big ups Ron Trent - music and power ✨

Ron Trent blends house, funk, and soul in a style reminiscent of the 1970s and 1980s. Feel the warmth of 'What Do the Stars Say to You'.

Excerpt from: Video Assignment Chaos
“Wait,” Trent said. “There may be some people who can help.”
 “Who?” Jane asked.
 “Axel, Dani Moreno, Max.”
 “Max?”
“His family has been in Lawndale a lot longer than ours has.”

Kim and Ron arrived at Cranberry Commons. “It’s about the same size as the Mall in Middleton,” the latter said.
“This is going to take a while,” Kim realised.

  Excerpt from: Invitation Trouble
“How long?” Jeffy asked.
 “Quite a while,” Quinn answered.
Daria winced at the high-pitched exclamation to her right.
Ugh! I hate it when the trays are wet,” Brittany Taylor exclaimed.
"That which does not kill us makes us stronger," Daria quoted.
“Is that from a song?” Brittany asked as she ran a hand through her short hair. “Hey, thanks for helping me out in art.”

Boimler was curious about the planet, but he had to wait until the end of his shift. He was also concerned about the report of the rogue Klingons. “What do you think is going to happen?” he asked Barnes.
“I’m not sure. Hopefully they won’t want to fight with the Che’Ta here,” Barnes responded. She looked at her board. “The probes haven’t found anything yet, but most of them are still moving to their positions.”

Having changed into a wetsuit uniform, Mariner entered the station.

Excerpt from: Middleton and Bonnie Rockwaller’s Genie
The Principal was not aware of the secret meeting that was taking place beneath the school during the last period of the school day.
The attendees of the meeting were students, who had been excused from class for a variety of reasons, and two or three teachers who didn’t have a class for that period...
“Now, does everyone understand what you need to do?” the convener of the meeting, who stood in a shadow that the meagre lights of the room did not reach, asked.
“Yes!” the teachers, and most of the students, said enthusiastically.
“Yes, Of course I do. There was no need for the repetition,” the remaining student said. As she had been sitting separately from everyone else, she quickly exited the room.
“Excellent! Meeting is adjourned,” the convener said.
The students who attended the meeting then returned to their classes via various secret passageways beneath the school buildings, re-emerging into the corridors, or the basement, where the Principal’s cameras had blind spots.
The last of the students whom had attended the secret meeting had returned to their classes 20 minutes before school finished for the day.
Bonnie Rockwaller, sophomore, and cheerleader, did not know as she exited the school’s front entrance what role she would play in the history making events over the next few weeks. She was completely oblivious.
