god i am obsessed eith the tonal shift between ahlf life 1 and 2 in regard to the sense of success at ur accomplisments
in 1, nothing you do ever gives u a sense of success or accomplishment, u killed people, u killed aleins but u have so much more to do. its an empty feeling, oh u killed the tentacles? cool go down the hole, dog urself deeper into this mess. oh you killed the gargantua and turned on the railway? go down deeper into the water and blood deeper into the bowels of the beast you created of the facility. you kill the nihilanth and u look up at the fireworks knoeing you are going to die, you cannot escape the explosion and the mess youve created. ur pulled from the mess and you are told you have guranteed urself a future of killing and endless battles or a battle u can never win. mothing you do matter none of it is worth anything. you are cold and alone and soaked in blood and people are only getting more scared
but in 2 the mood shifts, the smallest battles give people hope for a future. you can kill even a few soldiers and even if you do have to go deeper, the people around you cheer, if only for a moment, theyre alive and breathing and so are you. so many things yo do youre asked to do them again and again and each time these people are excited, thwyre grasping for a semblance of hope til thwir nails bleed and they cheer becuz they are alive and in the sun and watching their breath freeze as they cheer in the cold air of the mountains. the grass is green and growing and its more life than uve seen since before you moved to the middle of a desert to work in a concrete prison far from the warmth of the sun where it bakes all that it touches.
do you think gordon feels the happiness of the rebels? feels a sense of accomolishment in even the smallest thing he does? is he satisfied or fullfilled for helpjng these people? can he feel the sun warm the skin of his face and the bite of eastern european chill on his nose the way the rebels do? does he relish in that he is alive still? is he coming back? or do you think he still feels dull as he sinks deeper and deeper into the recesses of his mind and the concrete cage of balck mesa where his old life died?

What about the crew members?
I cannot get over this line from the black trailer for a few reasons:
1. This is a world where there's fully functional soldier robots and AI. Why is the train manned by people in the first place? Jacques clearly motivated by money, so the less people he has to pay the better
2. We never see these supposed crew members, so there's no chance of having a visceral reaction to either their safety or demise. The only SDC workers we ever see iirc are the ones from the Adam short who smirk after throwing a smoke bomb. If we were meant to sympathize with them, it would've been better to make them shaking and scared because they're maintenance engineers instead of security (because having two types of security is expensive and stupid)
3. The SDC is enslaving and branding people, and everyone not fighting it is complicit. Blake has rescued Faunus from literal cages in SDC factories and has seen Adam's face, so she knows this intimately. Why does she care if a few accessories to slavery get blown up? Does she care more for complacent humans than suffering Faunus?
What about the crew members? Fuck em, that's what

Hewwo guys! Perhaps some of you think that I don't care about the Unigang and the Unikingdom citizens, but I don't, because I have a couple of original characters, and I also developed some existing characters in the show.
Rexflex (Dino Dude and Kickflip's son) and Fleur (Flamurtle and Owlamander's daughter).
Tumblr media
They are young stuntmen and like to compete in a friendly way, but Fleur is much more aggressive and sometimes envies those who are younger than her, but everyone adores her and really wants to be friends.
Dylan and Teresa (Ted Butter's kids)
Tumblr media
They are teenage twins who talk normally, unlike their father (who deliberately quacks at everyone, and does not talk), go to high school, like different jokes and dye their hair in the colors of their favorite characters. They may seem toxic, but they actually want a little attention.
Older Nostromoo, Lil Bean and "Jenny" (original Unikitty! characters)
Tumblr media
Guys who are somewhere 7-8 younger than Unikitty, but also managed to interact with fankids.
Nostromoo is the same age as Lil Bean, identifies himself as a nonbinary with the pronouns it/they and geek, is good at physics and likes a series of films about "Alien" and "The Predator".
Lil Bean is a cool guy and an awesome bass guitarist who has the nickname L0Я4 and they say that he wants to free the Cult of Stickers, and so unsuccessfully. Likes to eat and watch movies, and also doesn't like to lose.
"Jenny" (Robot Kid) is older than them, but this is not a reason not to communicate. A little older, she decided to work as a waiter and for this she attracted attention in various ways. She loves listening to music, fast food and roller skating, her favorite animated series is the one where MC (main character) is also a robot and she is her namesake. Good engineering skills, but they don't always come in handy.
And, good gals and friends
Oldstyle (Old Timey Moustache Guy's daughter) and Croissant (Toaster, Toast and Bagel's relative)
Tumblr media
Oldstyle works for Father Time, but cannot pass on the rights to operate her personal Time Machine, but soon she finds out that her versions from the future have already traveled through time, so she does not lose heart and trains. Croissant is originally from France and she likes to stretch out their family "Ooooh" as "Oooooh-la-la".
That's all characters now. See you more later! Bye!

Citizen Sleeper
Tumblr media
What if Disco Elysium, but in space, and you're an escaped robot instead of a cop?
I just got finished binging through Citizen Sleeper again to play the free DLC stories, and wanted to recommend it here because I think it deserves more love. It's a narrative video game that I think would really appeal to a lot of you - Disco Elysium is a good touchstone, I think, in that it's very much about game mechanical interactions revealing the story, being a stranger in a fascinating and complicated place, questions of identity and belonging, and different forms of struggling communities trying to exist together.
More ramblings about why you should play this below
So first off, it's relatively short - six to eight hours, so it's easy to get the whole story. Mechanically, you're getting a number of dice each 'day' to put into activities, and getting a bit of story back with the results. One of the major themes of the narrative is chronic illness/disability; your robot body is slowly (intentionally) falling apart, and so not only do you have to get money to eat each day, but you have to constantly source the medicine you need to keep yourself together - if you don't, your condition degrades and you have fewer and fewer dice to work with. But this also eats into the time you have for understanding the space station you're on, and making the connections with other people that will get you better opportunities and support when you have a day where all your dice are low and nothing is going to go right. It's a frustrating spiral that will feel very realistic to anyone who's trying to live with a chronic condition. (Although, because it's a game, there's some good hidden tricks it uses to make it feel frustrating without actually locking you out of progress.)
The other characters that you meet in the world are good; there are some longer storylines where you get to know them over the course of events, but also some of my favorites are the ones you see only briefly, but repeatedly - the mushroom seller that kept me fed, the barkeep at the place that I could reliably pick up tips, the stray cat outside the apartment you gradually put together for yourself... you don't have a constant companion, and the game doesn't provide romantic opportunities (because you're a robot? because you're a stranger passing through? because there's only so much writing they could put in?) but there's still some good connections to be made, queer and disabled bodies are everywhere, and if I had one regret for the game, it's that there weren't more ways to spend time with people once their arc of the story had 'closed' but the game was moving on.
And then there's the story itself, about an exploited and abandoned space station, and the ways people try to survive - by exploiting others in turn, by trying to protect themselves and what they have, by escaping to new communities, or just trying to get through the day. It is very much a story that believes the only way we'll make it is by helping each other, but also it's realistic about the obstacles in the way of that. It's very good, and I love the way all the choices you have to make are reflected back by the characters around you.
Anyway yeah, go play Citizen Sleeper - there's a set of free story expansions that came out too, so if you went through when it originally came out, there's a bunch of new fun stuff for you to look for as well! (I do wish some of the systems made more of a reappearance, but also, game design is hard. :)

Yknow i often think about the eroticism and bliss that would come from forsaking my mortal flesh and becoming machine or if i was assimilated into an esoteric and nebulous state of being
yeah that'd be rad
but every time i think that 'being human sucks' i stop myself and correct myself. being human is pretty awesome. being a humanoid fungal monster of the void would be beautiful and freeing and euphirc but
i often think about that one scene in citizen sleeper
where you're given the option to ascend to that pure digital state or leave it all behind in return for a dying body that constantly sucks or isnt working right. how being able to feel someone squeeze your hand as you woke up back to the land of the living was a reminder. that there is worth in the stupid sucky bodies we have. the taste of stew and the friends you made along the way. that scene made me cry.
anyways my tits are sore but having them fudgin rocks <3

God blizzard political lore has the worsssst depictions/analogies of literally any type of conflict or oppression ever. Like you can’t even try to have a nuanced discussion about a single characters ideology (let alone a group of them) because the entire thing is too much of a mess

Scars are something you have learned to value. They are what marks out your body from the hundreds (maybe thousands, who knows?) or similar models that rolled out of Essen-Arp's biolabs. You find yourself rubbing one on your forearm, a rough little split, something that on the good days you might think of as a mark of defiance.

Stellaris: Your people have completed the transition into robotic bodies.
Me: yay!
Stellaris: they are now free of aging, pain, and disease.
Me: yay!
Stellaris: also, you can now create "virtual worlds" that specialize in research, trade, and unity.
Me: yay!
Stellaris: on these worlds, you can commodify people, effectively killing them and leaving a deposit worth 8 trade value.
Me: ya-oh...

Hro. Sweet being the phantom who had lost her humanity to Hlr. Steel being the android who had gained his humanity just before they became an Antigod ( that had made them feel more lost than ever as their status of who and what they are )... Hro. Sweet and Hlr. Steel being in this cycle of, respectively, haunting and hunting ( the violence towards self vs. violence towards others ) that they were able to break themselves free from before they became an Antigod... Hro. Sweet and Hlr. Steel being made by humanity yet humanity can't fully control either of them, and now that they're an Antigod, they're even stronger that shows even the Narrative can't control both of them...
