These are some facts and curiosities about Karl Brandt, the head of the Aktion T4:
He was born on 8th of January, 1904 in Alsace.
He began his studies in 1924, at the University of Jena, and in 1928, at the age of 24, he became a doctor.
A young doctor when he joined the Nazi party in 1932, he placed his hopes in the party for the recovery of the Alsace region, which in the meantime had returned under French rule (in 1919). A very important role in the formation of his thought was played by an Alsatian like him, the Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Schweitzer, whose work as a missionary in Africa he however could not join for political and military reasons.
In 1934, at the age of just 29, he became the Führer's personal doctor . The conflict between the two was always quite heated. In fact, while Hitler's official doctor, Morell, was considered a charlatan, Karl Brandt was the scientific figure and traditional doctor of the Reich.
He was the man chosen by Hitler as the initiator of the T4 Program (the killing of disabled Germans) and as his supreme medical authority.
With these authorities, he was involved in roles of maximum responsibility in the sadly famous "scientific" experiments on human beings, including the one in which he himself asked the ReichsFührer, Heinrich Himmler, for authorization to carry out inoculations of the epidemic hepatitis virus in human beings.
He and Albert Speer were not only close friends, but also acted to save each other's lives. In 1944, Brandt used his enormous powers as General Commissioner of Medical Services and his friends to save the already ill Speer from Himmler's assassination attempt. Subsequently, on April 16, 1945, Brandt was arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death, as he was accused of high treason against the Führer. But on May 2 he was released by order of Karl Dönitz. In fact, upon hearing the news of his friend and colleague's arrest, Speer had the urgency to mobilize various people to save his life.
Brandt entered into what many think of as an adopted son relationship with the Führer himself.
François Bayle, a French psychologist who interviewed him repeatedly at the time of the Nuremberg trials, described him thus:
«Rich, vigorous, but undisciplined, pugnacious and childish personality made vulnerable by his ambition and pride. Possessed of a vivid intelligence, but little logical clarity and much imagination, which can easily be influenced and led astray. His character could also be influenced, just as easily."
He was tried from 9 December 1946 to 19 August 1947 with twenty-two other doctors at the Nuremberg Palace of Justice
Karl Brandt was found guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity and membership of an organization declared criminal by the International Military Tribunal and sentenced to death by hanging.

jurisprudence & criminology intro reading list.
this list is not an exhaustive guide to any of these fields. my main goal here is to propose some key concepts so that you can start exploring theory on your own. it should also go without saying that it is not composed merely of scholarship that i consider good or even truthful; getting familiar with historical themes is very much beneficial for the broader context. additionally, while jurisprudence and criminology are closely related fields, and having some general idea about jurisprudence makes studying criminology easier, it's not a requirement, so feel free to skip sections as you please. lastly: this is a mix of more theory-heavy and also relatively light reading; if something is difficult to understand, google and youtube are your best friends, and there's a good chance other texts will appear more accessible.
jurisprudence
one of the main questions of jurisprudence is: what is is the proper relationship between law and morality? the following texts focus mostly on that question.
main schools to explore:
legal naturalism notable names: ian fuller, john finis. (naturalist-leaning): patrick devlin. proposed readings: 1. devlin, p. (1959) morals and the criminal law, 2. fuller, l. (1964), the morality of law 3. finnis, j. (1980) natural law and natural rights.
legal positivism notable names: jeremy bentham, john austin, h. l. h. hart, joseph raz. proposed readings: 1, stanford encyclopedia of philosophy: the legal positivism entry, 2. hart, h. (1961) the concept of law, 3. hart, h. (1963) the legal enforcement of morality, 4. raz, j. (1979) the authority of law.
legal interpretivism notables names: ronald dworkin proposed reading: 1. stanford enclycopedia of philosophy: the intepretivism entry, 2. dworkin, r. (1978) taking rights seriously.
critical theory (generally legal positivist in the simplest terms, but not necessarily comfortable with that label) & sociology. notable names: max weber, emile durkheim, carol smart (feminism), achille mbembe (postcolony) proposed reading: 1. smart, c. (1989) feminism and the power of law. 2. hardar, p. (2008) law, orientalism and postcolonialism: the jurisdiction of the lotus-eaters.
criminology
main topics to explore:
biological theories (look: phrenology, degeneration theory, atavistic theory of crime.) notable names: cesare lombroso, b.a. morel. this is mostly historical content; most textbooks on criminology will have a section on it. google is also your best friend. original source texts are mostly pseudo-scientific so i recommend looking into them only if you're specifically curious.
functionalism & structuralism notable names: emile durhkeim, robert merton proposed readings: 1. durkheim, e. (1972) crime as normal behaviour, 2. merton, r. (1938) social structure and anomie
marxist criminology notable names: willem bonger, thorster sellin proposed readings: 1. bonger, w. (1916) criminality and economic conditions, 2. sellin, t. (1938) culture conflict and crime
control theory notable names: jackson toby, travis hirschi. proposed readings: 1. pratt, t. (2011). "key idea: hirschi’s social bond/social control theory." in: key Ideas in criminology and criminal justice.
labelling theory notable names: howard becker proposed readings: 1. goode, e. (2018) labeling theory.
penal theory
in terms of penal theory, you can find plenty reliable sources and reading lists online. here are some of my personal theory-heavy picks.
key readings:
the iep entry on punishment,
the stanford encyclopedia of philosophy entry on legal punishment,
carlen, p. (2013) against rehabilitation: for reparative justice.
davis, a. (2003) are prisons obsolete?
foucault, m. (1975) discipline and punish: the birth of the prison.
johnstone, g., (2002), restorative justice: ideas, values, debates,
johnstone, g. (ed.), (2007), handbook of restorative justice.

Hunter Biden has become the center of renewed political controversy after it emerged former acting CIA director Mike Morell helped organize a letter by 50 intelligence community figures, ahead of the 2020 presidential election, suggesting leaked emails from Hunter's laptop were Russian disinformation.
Morrell made the confession in private sworn testimony to the House Judiciary Committee, saying he acted after speaking to Antony Blinken, then part of the Biden campaign and now secretary of state, because he wanted Joe Biden to "win the election."
In response to the claims, the White House told Newsweek that House Republicans are "weaponizing their power to go after" opponents and "re-litigate the 2020 election with misleading claims."
Allegations of Russian collusion sparked major controversy after the 2016 presidential election, when embarrassing emails from the Democratic National Committee were revealed by Wikileaks. An investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller later concluded the hack was conducted by Russian military intelligence officers, in an effort to boost then-Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Just weeks before the 2020 election the New York Post published what it said were emails from Hunter Biden's laptop, recovered by a computer repair shop owner, which they claimed showed improper business relationships. In response more than 50 former intelligence officials, including ex-CIA chiefs John Brennan and Mike Hayden, signed an open letter suggesting "the Russians are involved in the Hunter Biden email issue."
John Ratcliffe, then Director of National Intelligence, contested this assessment. During an interview with Fox Business he said: "We shared no intelligence with Chairman [Adam] Schiff or any other member of Congress that Hunter Biden's laptop is part of some Russian disinformation campaign."
Schiff, a Democrat, was then chair of the House Intelligence Committee.
In March 2022 analysis by The Washington Post concluded thousands of the emails were "authentic communications," and no evidence has been found of any Russian role in their release.
Appearing before the House Judiciary Committee Morell said he was contacted by Blinken "on or before" October 17, 2020, which "triggered...that intent" leading him to organize the letter, which was provided to Politico.
Morell admitted he acted because "I wanted him [Biden] to win the election."
He added that Biden campaign chairman Steve Ricchetti later called to "thank me for putting the statement out."

Opening this week is RENFIELD starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reuniting 18 years after starring as father and son in THE WEATHER MAN.
Tumblr media
After giving more than a deep nod to the iconography of Universal's DRACULA films, RENFIELD quickly proves to be its own monster as it morphs into a wild action-comedy (considering it's written by COMMUNITY, RICK & MORTY and INVINICBLE writer Ryan Ridley from a concept by THE WALKING DEAD's Robert Kurtzman and directed by THE LEGO MOVIE, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE and MOREL OREL director Chris McKay the tone is unsurprising).
It's fun, it's funny, it's 90-minute blood-filled fluff.
What would have made it even better was if they had kept in a dance sequence that they had planned for Hoult. Nicky wasn't going to let his hard work go to waste, so he posted the footage.
And after seeing him play a string of cruel cads, I forgot how charming Nicky can be.
Tumblr media
And while it's nice seeing him being delightful, I love when he plays the cad as he does in THE GREAT.
Season 3 trailer up.
