Wire hang redux
Tumblr media
With Lewis emerging as a vocalist alongside Newman, the result was an expansive, textured album with a more pronounced melodic orientation. If Chairs Missing saw Wire exploring the possibilities offered by the recording studio, on 154 they took fuller advantage of that environment. Indeed, Wire often bewildered live audiences by playing unrecorded tracks rather than the numbers people expected to hear. Although Chairs Missing had been released only months before, live sets included a significant amount of material that would appear on 154. for the first time and, in March 1979, toured Europe with Roxy Music. Songs were being written and jettisoned at a considerable rate and Wire were gigging relentlessly. Wire albums usually feature one near-perfect pop song and Chairs Missing's "Outdoor Miner" almost became a hit, until it was scuppered by a payola scandal at EMI. With Thorne playing keyboards and producing, this was a more complex, multi-dimensional record that supplemented Pink Flag's harsh minimalism with dense, occasionally unsettling atmospherics. Although the phrase "early Pink Floyd" was uttered dismissively in some quarters, it was well-received. The album met with critical acclaim and a follow-up was recorded in spring 1978.Ĭhairs Missing was a radical departure. Pink Flag's 21 highly original tracks (each averaging just over a minute-and-a-half) compressed and twisted rock into often jagged, taut shapes. Produced by Thorne, 1977's amphetamine-paced Pink Flag found Wire taking punk to extremes while also keeping an ironic distance from it by introducing elements of tension and abstraction. By then, with Newman writing most of the music, they were eager to record before they lost interest in material, abandoned it, and moved on a pattern that would come to define the group. Thorne included two Wire tracks and was then instrumental in bringing the band to EMI in September. Wire met EMI's Mike Thorne, who was recording groups for a live punk album, The Roxy, London WC2. A gig at the Roxy in early 1977 proved auspicious. Wire began playing dates in London and, having ousted Gill, started from scratch, writing new material and taking a more pared-down, experimental approach. Subsequently, the three recruited bassist Graham Lewis and drummer Robert Gotobed (aka Robert Grey), and the first Wire lineup was in place. At Watford Art College in 1976, guitarists Colin Newman and George Gill formed Overload with audiovisual technician Bruce Gilbert (also on guitar). Like many punk contemporaries, Wire had roots in the art school tradition. Their restlessness paved the way for hardcore punk, post-punk, and goth, and influenced artists as diverse as Minor Threat, Guided by Voices, Helmet, and Lush, as well as the many post-punk revivalists of the 2000s and 2010s.īy the time punk arrived, British art schools had long been a hotbed of musical activity, spawning some of the nation's most innovative rock acts from the '60s onward. Through it all, Wire have never sounded exactly the same twice. Later works such as Mind Hive (2020) reflected the moody guitar pop they purveyed in the 2010s and 2020s. The group returned from hiatuses in the '80s and '90s with renewed creativity on the electronic leanings of The Ideal Copy (1987) or the ferocious noise of Send (2003). This capacity for self-reinvention, and their willingness to stop recording when ideas aren't forthcoming, is crucial to Wire's longevity and continued relevance. Pink Flag (1977) found them twisting punk's simplicity and rawness to their own arty designs on Chairs Missing (1978) they added frosty atmospheres and more melodic songwriting, both of which they heightened on 154 (1979). Their first three albums alone attest to a startling evolution as the band repeatedly - and rapidly - reinvented themselves. Focused on experimentation and process, Wire's musical identity constantly changes. Emerging from the British punk explosion, Wire resisted easy categorization from the start, and would for decades to come.

FAD GADGET - Spex Fanzine Interview (02/81)
Translated by @manicswitch (Thanks Ira!). Editing and proofreading by @pfurs.
Then Fad Gadget - alias Frank Tovey. Standing at his side were Robert Gotobed (Ex-Wire)/Drums, a bassist, and Daniel Miller (The Normal, Mute Records Boss)/Electronics.
The music was his label's known blend. Electropop: sometimes straight, sometimes playful - with a bit of black humor. Everything went great - only Robert Gotobed struggled to catch up sometimes. Highlights include - unsurprisingly - his singles "Ricky's Hand", "Fireside Favorites", and the new "Make Room".
But even while everything sounded nice, I lost major interest after a third of the performance. His music was too conventional, edgeless, and with not enough surprises for my tastes.
Now, Fad Gadget doesn't see himself as just a plain musician, but as a performer as well. And it was very impressive to see what he was capable of.
He banged on his equipment with a plastic pipe hard enough to get the room to shake. One time he hung himself from the pipes on the ceiling, only to let himself fall all of a sudden. The ending highlight was a tense duel between his head and a rhythm machine. One could almost think he acted in some kind of performance mania - if it weren't for the calculated placement of a break in the middle to gauge the audience's reactions as he told us later on.
And a majority of the audience, especially the audience at the front, was very pleased with what they saw. While they danced, people in the back were less impressed and used the time to talk.
I was under the impression that the stage spectacle was compensating for the missing surprises and intensity in the music. Fad Gadget's actions somehow stood oddly unrelated to the music.
Here the underlying problem of all e-poppers, from Orchestral Manoeuvres to Human League, once more became obvious: Producing pop with synthesizers is nothing new anymore. Once you're acquainted with those sounds, you'll find yourself asking why conventional music, only by the addition of electronic instruments, should be considered unique.
We were able to talk to Fad Gadget after the concert. We then immediately asked him if his music had a lot of potential. "I can’t really say. It's something that'll show in the future - if it couldn't evolve, I would immediately stop with that approach." He doesn't see himself reliant on musical activity. After all, he has a performance art degree and being a mime behind him. "Today music is the medium for me to realize my ideas. Rock'n'roll, out of all other art forms, is interesting to me because of its spontaneity. I like the exciting and raw feel and the direct contact to the audience. Everything you do has immediate feedback."
And what was that with the break: "I always do that to test the audience!" But that's something very risky to do: "Well, yeah. I haven't been attacked for it yet. But something unexpected can always happen and that's kind of the point of me doing it."
Suicide isn't his favorite group at the moment for no reason. Just like them, Fad Gadget doesn't just care about the music, but about conveying a concept as well. "I first think of an idea, a concept. Right now, I convey this best through music. But I can imagine myself one day stop doing music - without losing my ideas. Because then, I would still be able to see other means where I would be able to express myself."

Wire — Mind Hive (Pinkflag)
Tumblr media
youtube
Bullet point or bulletproof? Wire continue to defy categorization on Mind Hive, effortlessly expanding without losing their quintessence. Fearless innovators, who, like sharks, keep moving, never slow down, elude pigeonholing by being ahead of their own and everybody else’s game. Ironically the go-to comparison for every new angular post-punk newbie, Wire long since bolted. They produce consistently changing and challenging music, always different, ever Wire.
This time out they move from English pastoral psychedelia to Eno-esque ambience via stomping experimental rock and some of the prettiest melodies of their career. Bassist Graham Lewis remains an oblique, elliptical lyricist but also writes some of his most pointedly polemic poetry shot through with the nervous edge characteristic of much of his output. Colin Newman is a compelling vocalist equally comfortable with staccato declamation and understated crooning. Drummer Robert Gray (the artist formerly known as Gotobed) swings from motorik barrage to atmospheric background fizz and Matthew Simms’ guitar playing fits seamlessly within the range.
Mind Hive opens with a trifecta of hard hitting mid-tempo deconstructions that both meet and play with expectations taking familiar elements — Gray’s metric beats, Lewis’s serpentine bass and sarky paranoid words, Newman’s off hand delivery, the choppy guitars – and combines them into classic off kilter gems. Thereafter, the album gets really interesting. “Off The Beach,” driven by acoustic guitar, strings and brass, references inter alia, the Khashoggi murder (“People praying, disappearing/CC cameras, knives and hammers.”), refugees and public apathy. Newman’s vocal is at the center of a pop melody as direct and poignant as the lyrics. It’s followed by the swirling psych-folk of “Unrepentant” and “Shadows” with echoes of early Pink Floyd, a riposte perhaps to the “Punk Floyd” moniker tossed at them after Chairs Missing and 154 confounded fans of the ur-post punk Pink Flag. “Oklahoma” bristles with exasperated energy with Lewis on vocal duty over a wall of electronic and guitar buzz. The ambient, organ backed “Humming” is a dystopian vision of betrayal and pained nostalgia for times before “Russians brushing scandals under oligarchy rugs.” The Orwellian coda — “I can’t quite remember/When it went wrong/Someone was humming/A popular song” — is an eloquent elegy to the good slipping away in these days of sorrow.
Mind Hive is concise yet full of restless intelligence, musical ideas and willingness to push boundaries. Taut, tense, not a wasted note, moments of great beauty, 35 minutes of Wire contains enough to fuel a multitude of pretenders.

SOME LISTS BY DINA HORNREICH
In a not-so comprehensive (mostly desultory) manner I have thrown this list of current zeitgeisty kinds of things that I encountered in one way or another that had various compelling bits, chunks, and other substantial nuggets (if not their complete entirety) of a musical persuasion that provided something engaging, amusing, enlightening, challenging, discordant, or otherwise worthwhile for my freaky mind, body, and soul to chew on in this last year of 2019. There are always tons and tons of things that I missed and/or never got to (but always meant to) so not exhaustive whatsoever. More a reflection of where I’ve been these days and how I’ve gotten here... (and will try to remain, if circumstances allow.)

And to go full circle around in the weird miasmic disorientations of blogs/zines, and every tool in between...I could mention the writers at Bust, Bitch, Pitchfork, even… DAGGER. But credit for discoverability also includes the vending platforms of Spotify/Bandcamp/Apple Music/Soundcloud themselves (and their haunted algorithms) as well as musicians’ various social media counterparts (which may or may not include their publicists) on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. (and where does YouTube fit in exactly?) which means the industry will eventually eat itself. Happy New Year, ladies and germs. Who knows what the next decade will bring? Whatever it may be, let it be progress rather than random changes for no apparently good reasons.
