Like, yeah, we do have a real issue with the need to elevate everything we like to a certain level of importance that it doesn't really deserve in online queer spaces and I think it mostly has to do with the fact that...nobody wants to admit they really don't know much about our history so they latch onto things that were formative for them. Which tbh is fine. If you think Riverdale is foundational queer media that takes no skin off my nose. The problem comes when, because this piece of media is important to you, you cannot stand to hear criticism of it in any capacity, which leads me to my next point. We also have an issue with thinking critically about older queer media and the circumstances surrounding its creation in online queer spaces, which again, is a result of not knowing much about queer history. People love Keith Harring but if you bring up his relationship with the young men he used for his art and his treatment of Latino men and boys in general, suddenly, everybody wanna get quiet. People will sensationalize Dorian Corey's story and make her a spectacle out of "love" for her but won't even bother to learn about the culture she was a part of. Y'all LOVE talking about Stonewall and Marsha P but you know NOTHING about the history of S.T.A.R.R and how she was treated by some of yall "queer elders". These issues will continue if we don't make a genuine effort to educate ourselves about our history and allow ourselves to think critically about the media we consume, even if it's important to us. Ain't no way in hell a discussion like this should have resulted in vicious transmisogyny and threatening to call Black people slurs over a fuckin tumblr poll, yall are all way too fucking grown to be acting like this.

I was tagged by @sothischickshe (thank you!!! 🥰) to answer 20 questions for writers:
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
205.
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
609,094
3. What fandoms do you write for?
fandoms i've written for include:
Law & Order: SVU / L&O: Organized Crime
Good Girls
Gotham
Buffy the Vampire Slayer / Angel
Criminal Minds
Graceland
Stranger Things
The Walking Dead
Riverdale
Castlevania
Preacher
Four Brothers
Outer Banks
Gilmore Girls
while no longer available, in the past i've also written for:
Fast and Furious franchise
MCU / Marvel
Boondock Saints
Hocus Pocus
From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series
DC
(plus more i'm probably forgetting about)
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Shared History (Good Girls/Brio)
Degree of Separation (Good Girls/Brio)
Milkshakes (Good Girls/Brio)
Deep Sense of Belonging (Good Girls/Brio)
Sacred Art of Kissing (Good Girls/Brio)
5. Do you respond to comments?
i read all of them for sure but i'm terrible sometimes at responding although i do try my best
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
ooft, okay. there's probably more than this but the following have major character death warnings that could very well be classed as angsty lmao:
i wrote this little ficlet: Gone (SVU, bensler/EO) in which a raid goes wrong and it's just pain from start to finish and then there's Until Long After She Takes Her Final Breath which is a Good Girls/brio fic in which their reunion at the beginning of season 3 goes very differently.
Why don't we go to Venus? is another Good Girls/brio fic in which the summary is: Rio killed her and that was supposed to be the end of it but Beth doesn’t seem to be done with him quite yet.
that one is probably my angstiest overall but the ending is probably the least angsty bit about it??? haha
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
honestly? i have no idea and i have no clue how to check 😭😂
8. Do you get hate on fics?
there was someone going around the SVU/OC fandom leaving weird hate comments on people's stuff (anonymously) and i got one but while it felt rude, it didn't feel like hate, but also it felt like it was supposed to be hateful, y'know? pretty sure i just deleted it though (i for sure ignored it) 😂
but generally, no. i'm lucky to say that i tend to avoid hate on social media and that includes fanfiction.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
i have done and the variety isn't huge but it's there? i guess?
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
i have done! beyond the obvious (where shows, etc share worlds), i did a boondock saints/the walking dead one (which was also co-written) because norman reedus stars in both 😂
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that i'm aware of?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
again, not that i'm aware of
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
yes! the aforemention boondock saints/the walking dead fic was co-written on ff.net and i co-wrote (with the same person), a fast and furious fic.
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
i lost myself a ton in writing olivia/elliot from svu/organized crime as well as beth/rio from good girls so they'd probably battle it out for top spot.
BUT
if i'm being brutally honest, my all time favourite ever to write were fast and furious ships 😂 especially the OGs (specifically vince and leon) with my OCs (although there were canon ships i loved to write too!). it was just so fun and freeing and i constantly think about it.
(i also loved when i wrote random marvel/mcu pairings, winterwitch was probably my number one for them and again, i think about it a lot)
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
i think it's unlikely i'll finish a lot but especially a degree of separation. i kind of hate it, i'm so sorry 😭😭😭
16. What are your writing strengths?
the thought of analysing my own writing right now sounds painful but two of the most common nice things people tell me is that: 1) they like how i write dialogue and 2) they like my writing style in general
(but of which i highly appreciate!)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
i don't do it enough?
nah. true but seriously, there's a ton, however, i do tend to waffle on and write something in several sentences that could have been just one 😭
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I don't think i've ever done it? if i have it'll be dialogue or whatever that's already in the show/move/etc
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The Fast and the Furious 🥰
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
still on ao3: it has to be Why don't we go to Venus? but also Knock First which is a Beth/Rio/Original Male Character threesome fic that was SO MUCH fun
no longer posted: a fic for The Fast and the Furious. it was a Vince/OC story. it was so much fun to write and it was one of my most popular back when i was posting on ff.net and i miss this story all the time (even though it's probably awful 😂) and always think about re-writing and posting it again on ao3
Tagging: @conscience-killer @constant-sinner @astarkey @xstrawmari @blainesebastian if ya like! (sorry if you've been tagged before!)

what's up with that powerfully painful book burning visual Riverdale season 7???
it's so relevant now too... we're seeing carbon copies of things we as a country have supposedly "progressed past." i'm no nationalist but still i wish there was something in this country to be proud to be a part of.
we are seeing book burnings over "sexual deviancy" and "obsecenity." and no i don't just mean quiet censorship policies there have been literal public book burnings (posted online for wider reach even) and book burning campaigns, read the damn news. we are seeing a rise in old fascist ways. you can't look like this or love like that. you can't choose what you do with your own body, that's absurd! why does it feel like i'm living in Riverdale's parody of decades past? and this is even knowing I don't get the worst of it yet. knowing it's even scarier just a few lines in the sand away. knowing people like me are dying, being murdered, silenced.
they want to burn our history, burn the science, kill us, then claim we never existed. now i want you to tell me why your petty pearl-clutching disgust wars about fictional characters are more important to you than the way history is turning. quickly. tell me why the Hays Code is Good Actually.
and also as a writer, as an artist, and as a fucking queer, if you believe in this book burning madness-- if you agree with this repressive, regressive bullshit-- then fuck all the way off. writing is my life and my livelihood. writing for myself makes me happy, writing and editing for others makes me proud to play a part in their vision, art is the last inch. the last inch we have of us.
without art, without literature, our eulogies will be written For Us-- if we are allowed even that. without the claimed "degenerate corrupting media" you may in all probability be barred from voting or in prison for not dressing Your Sex enough. so how about you shut up about which books are okay to set aflame before i set you aflame. yes? great! glad we're on the same page!

you'll be the prince, and I'll be the princess
Summary: Years later after Jug and Betty move away from Riverdale, they visit a bookstore. Based on the prompt: visiting an antique book story, choosing books for each other to read. Title from Love Story by Taylor Swift
-/-
She swings the door open and a wave of salted ocean air breezes over him before he steps behind her to grab the door from slamming shut. She wanted to go exploring, a morning venture into town, and he was happy to join in on the excursion, the type of adventures they have now settled into comfortably in their new life on the coast. Leaning into catching the door, he enters the establishment, before allowing the entrance to close promptly behind him, a pause on its hinges before a defined thud is echoed. Encasing them in the store, it feels like they are now one of the bound novels held upon the shelves inside. The ocean doesn’t exist here, the shoreline that they moved to a few years back only residing beyond the brick walls, but not within it. In these walls were stories, history, legend, art, and the scent of inspiration and revelation on the precipice of being discovered as he breathed in the prospect.

advice for someone from another country visiting new york for the first time for like 2weeks?
ahh honored that you would ask my advice!
General/boring advice: be prepared for Weather (carry a sweatshirt and an umbrella bc the ones they sell on the street are shit, carry a handfan bc the trains aren't always air conditioned), avoid the G and L trains wherever possible, and the 1 train on the weekends, be alert but don't be afraid, pay attention to subway announcements and read the subway maps carefully (ppl will know you're a tourist if you're glued to the map inside the train car but who cares), avoid times square if you can help it, walk fast if you're in midtown everyone will be grateful, dont smile at strangers except old ladies and babies, thank your bus driver. Follow @got2gonyc on insta bc they have a map of public bathrooms that is VITAL (my personal favorite public bathroom in nyc is inside the shops at columbus circle.)
NOW for fun stuff/ Grand List of Recommendations. im going to split this into sections and go into WAY too much depth. im also assuming you're staying in manhattan but going to provide recs throughout the boroughs
Culture
if you have some money to burn, definitely see some theatre. If you like musicals, Kimberly Akimbo has $40 rush tickets (meaning if you show up at the box office right when it opens you can get cheap seats), Parade has $45 rush (if you're going to the city before it closes).
see a film at the Metrograph or Film Forum (metrograph has uncomfy seats tbh but always shows great stuff.) The Angelika is also fine, and Alamo Drafthouse is not NY-specific but it's cool.
go to The Strand! not on a weekend bc it's far too crowded but there are just so. many. books. or go to a community bookstore like Word Up in Washington Heights or Bluestockings downtown (lots of queer and political books)
You gotta do a museum or two. The Museum of the Moving Image in Queens is all about film and if you love movies, it is beyond delightful. You can spend a whole day at the Met just wandering, but if you like an agenda, I really recommend going to the Dutch painting collection in Gallery 964 and checking out my favorite painting I've ever seen up close, as well as the sculpture garden in the American Wing, the Asian Wing, the Islamic Wing, and the Egyptian exhibit (you have to walk through it to get to a bunch of other things anyway). There are some van Goghs there, too, and the costuming exhibit and and and-- ok i'll stop here. The American Museum of Natural History has the ability to make you feel like a kid again if you were into science as a child.
Lots of museums, including El Museo del Barrio, Bronx Museum of Art, and the Museum of Jewish Heritage have days where admission is free. Lot of the galleries in Chelsea are also free every day (including the Gagosian Galleries on West 24th and the Chase Contemporary)
Visit a library! The big one in midtown or a smaller one (Morningside Heights Library by the Columbia campus is nice, I like the Mosholu one in the Bronx as well)
Food
you cannot leave NY without having a good NY bagel. Downtown: Bagel Bob's. Uptown: Pick-A-Bagel. Bronx: Riverdale Bagels (you need a bus to get to this one, or a long walk, but worth it.) Downtown, midtown, and Brooklyn: Russ and Daughter's. any old dollar pizza place is probably great, but if you want to be fancy, go to Luzzo's on the upper east side.
if you eat fish, Astoria Seafood is a MUST. fresh, delicious, no frills, BYOB. easy to get lost on the way there if you don't know Queens, so be careful.
Queens in general is a great place to eat. Most diverse urban community in the world! Mama's Empanadas (right by the Museum of the Moving Image, on Steinway Street) is a strong recommendation there, as well. Hot pot, bubble tea, Greek food, and momos are, as a general rule, very good in Queens.
if you want relatively affordable sushi and sake, Marumi is my go-to in Manhattan.
if you want a bougie brunch or dinner, go to Lido in Harlem. Any Jamaican place in Harlem or buffet-style southern food is likely to be good if you want to be adventurous and just pick one. Pies n Thighs in Brooklyn is also good southern-inspired food if you eat meat.
Tasty Handpulled Noodles in Chinatown (there's one on Doyers and one on 9th ave) is some of the best Chinese food. Chinatown Ice Cream Factory is upsettingly expensive but very delicious.
If you like to cook, go to Kalustyan's in Little India and get yourself some spices. They have more kinds of pepper there than you've ever seen in your life.
there is a sandwich shop in the Bronx i will ONLY tell you about via dm bc i won't have my secret faves revealed in a public forum.
lmk if you want Fancy-fancy recs for food, I can make a whole other post.
Green Spaces/Nature
Wave Hill up in Riverdale is beyond beautiful, and free on Thursdays. A bit of a trek from any trains, buses involved etc, but worth it!!
If you're going with friends or peers, a picnic in Central Park (North Meadow by the 103rd st/CPW entrance is a good spot, also Sheep Meadow or the Great Lawn) or just a walk through the park can be amazing. A little touristy, but who's counting.
The Coney Island Aquarium (whether or not you also go to the amusement park) is really nice. Very far from Manhattan, but easy to find (lots of crowds lots of signs)
I don't know Prospect Park in Brooklyn super well, other than the area right by Ample Hills Creamery-- great ice cream, by the way-- but it's pretty and really huge. On that note, also try The Social in Brooklyn for ice cream and DEFINITELY eat an icee from a cart. Churros from a cart in the subway in particular also always hit.
It is tenuous to call this nature but the Union Square Farmer's Market pops up every Saturday and you can buy really good produce/honey/flowers/booze (also, incidentally, right by a good ice cream place, Van Leeuwen's) ((also incidentally, I'm at the market pretty much every Saturday. idk if meeting a tumblr friend is on your want list but yeah.))

I guess I have to explain my au because I don’t feel like doing the concept art for characters.
Have you ever read played a game with a teen/young adult and asked yourself “what would happen if they took the game and made it into a bad teen drama.” Well, that’s what I thought. And I actually decided to write it.
It basically makes it into a modern fantasy high school au, but like, riverdale like. I will quote some lines from the fanfic
“I have always been a weirdo, wherever I go. The one who doesn’t move a facial muscle while watching a horror movie, the one who won’t cry when the dog dies in a family movie, and the one who doesn’t feel all lovey dovey when the two accountants fall in love at the end of a romantic comedy. I have also been told by doctors that I am weird in other ways too. Maybe there is a reason for my weirdness, but who knows? Maybe I will one day find the answer to it and why my dad keeps moving from city to city, village to village. But for now. It is all a mystery,” -byleth
“Also I see you got Caspar for your little useless Sigma army. Quite a useless army indeed,” - Felix
“Are you talking about me or are you talking shit about our boomer principal?” - Felix, Sagan
Now I won’t go all in depth about the outfits. But I did describe Linhardt as a person looking like they needed to buy a new joint while also having to dress up for your Oscar Wilde bookclub
Here’s the plot if you’re wondering about it, basically it starts with byleth (new student at the school) basically making Felix’s (bad boy, longer, has a hug collection of sword) life hell. To the point she follows him into the woods, where they discover a huge rock with strange symbols on it. So those 2 and the other main characters (Claude, Hilda, Lorenz, Edelgard, Ferdinand, Dorothea, Dimitri, Ingrid) decide to investigate further. Discovering more about the history of the school and it’s bad deeds.

Two things collapsing together in my mind today:
* Saw some news outlet tweet about an actor who murdered his mother in advance of a planned mass shooting. The actor is not a household name, and so they identified him by a recent role on Riverdale, and somebody anxiously, instantly replied, "FWIW he was only on Riverdale once," as if that were the most important part of the story.
* I'm watching this stupid movie that figures Edgar Allan Poe as a hunky, noble young soldier who courageously solves a mystery that very tangentially references the idea of a "raven". I don't generally object to creative appropriations of classic stories or persons, but it's awkward when all of the second-string characters--haunted, anemic, traumatized ghosts of themselves--more resemble Poe than this boneheaded Ken doll they put in the lead role.
It's crazy how corrupting the whole fandom phenomenon is. On the one hand, you can report a brutal murder and a narrowly-averted mass tragedy, and you get people rushing to the aid of Riverdale, and not the human beings who are, or were almost affected. On the other hand, you have famous characters and stories with a certain valuable legacy, and people will happily strip them of all of their uniqueness until they're just bland, anonymous porn parodies of themselves. This is so bad for culture, it's bad for how we relate to each other and how we relate to art and history. And this is the least important thing but you can't even use the word "fan" anymore and be assured that people will know what you mean. It's just like how we lost the word "nerd"--which used to indicate a certain kind of social reject who is academically advanced and almost rebelliously uncool--when it got taken over by anti-intellectual adult babies who can only get it up for comics and Star Trek and shit when it is converted into a big budget, live action thirst trap. I used to be able to describe myself as a "horror fan" and be understood without too many qualifiers; now I'm afraid to, lest somebody think I mean I that I like to imagine all my favorite villains with smokin' hot non-cadaverous bodies, cuddling and sharing an ice cream float with me, and generally acting like the cast of Saved By the Bell instead of, you know, scaring the shit out of me like the terrifying freaks they're supposed to be. Meanwhile I'm anxiously awaiting the day fandom turns up in the DSM; somebody has to be studying this shit.

On the first day of her dream job working for Dr. Marcella Lin, an Artificial Intelligence pioneer, Clem meets Dr. Lin's assistant, a gorgeous, yet cold humanoid AI named Kye. Sure, Clem has built her own robot-a cute moth-shaped companion named SENA-but Kye feels almost... human. When Clem and Kye begin to work together, their chemistry sets off sparks. The only downside? Dr. Lin won't allow Kye to become more independent. And their relationship is causing Clem to question everything she knows about her work. After all, if Kye is sentient enough to have feelings, shouldn't he be able to have his own thoughts? Where is the line between AI and human? As her future and her past weigh down on her, Clem becomes determined to help Kye break free-even if it means risking everything she came to Mars for.

Stuntboy: In Between Time HC - Jason Reynolds & Raul The Third
Portico Reeves is the greatest superhero a lot of people have never heard of. He likes it that way-then no one can get in the way of him from keeping other other people safe. Super safe. He's Stuntboy. He's got the moves. And the saves. Except. There's been one major fail. He couldn't save his parents from becoming Xs. Which is a word that sounds like coughing up a hairball. But don't talk to him about the divorce, because of the hairball thing, and also, it gives Portico the frets. What's also giving him frets is his parents living on two separate floors in their apartment building. He's never fully with one parent or the other. He's in-between, all the time. The in-between time. And the elevator is busted, so to get between floors means getting past the bullies who hang in the stairwells. So when Portico and new friend, Herbert, and best best friend, Zola, discover an empty apartment, unlocked, they are psyched. It's a perfect hideout, and hangout, and it's not half anyone's... it's all theirs. So they decide to make it their own...let's say with stunts of the drawing kind. Problem is, that gives some Grown Up People the frets, which leads to double frets for Portico. And he's not sure his arsenal of stunts can combat that.

my names are duck and pearl (the latter being the name i use for art and writing, the former being more of a casual name), and i am primarily interested in kitsch, horror (send me recs!), heart-shaped miscellany, comics, lgbt history, underground art, arthuriana, narrative cyclicality, technology as holy, hauntings, and riverdale. my favorite writer is toni morrison, and my favorite book is sula. i have been production assistant on a short film currently in postproduction, and in the future hope to go into movies!
my original post tag is #it speaks! , and my personal tag is #duckcore. the tag for my current wip is #the violence inherent in the system, though it is rarely used.
i create occasional art, and will infrequently post my writing. if we share any interests, don't hesitate to reach out to me! i love talking to people!

when jughead looks into the camera in the last episode of riverdale and says A story is true. a story is untrue. as time extends it matters less and less. the stories we want to believe, those are the ones that survive. those are the stories that shape history. then what does it matter if it was true when it was born? it’s found truth in its maturity... because what's it all for if it goes unremembered? it’s the art that leaves the mark. but to leave it, it must transcend. it must speak for itself. it must be true.
