Triggered About Triggers

What a wonderful time we live in as firearm owners and enthusiasts. The shear number of options available to us for various firearms, parts and accessories is mind blowing. A person can purchase almost any modern made firearm and then be swamped by what items to change or accessorize on said firearm. One of the most common upgrades that one can perform is on the trigger of the firearm.

Now why would someone want to take a brand new firearm and change out perfectly good parts for something else? Are the OEM parts that bad? Do they hamper reliability or function? What about aesthetics? The honest opinion is that these days, most OEM triggers are ample enough to get the job done. We truly are spoiled by great manufacturing processes and design. There are a myriad of reasons that a person would want to change out an OEM trigger for an aftermarket one. One of the more popular reasons is that people are often times looking for a more crisp trigger break. The trigger break is when the transition from pulling said trigger finally initiates the firing mechanism to launch the firing pin into the primer of the shell. Other aspects of a trigger can also be improved upon like the trigger take up and reset. The reset follows the trigger break. This is the amount of movement required for the trigger mechanism to reset itself allowing for another trigger squeeze and trigger break. A short resetting trigger is very often preferred by someone who is shooting fast paced competitions. A shorter reset allows the shooter to set up on their next shot quicker and can improve overall shooting times of the shooter.

Some platforms that I have a good amount of trigger knowledge on include Glocks, S&W M&P series and of course the AR platform. For the AR platform, a quick trip to Brownells can net you many pages of trigger options from a myriad of different manufacturers. To the new AR owner or a first time tinkerer it can be somewhat overwhelming which trigger to upgrade to. Aftermarket trigger systems for the AR can range in price from the $75 range all the way past $400. The first question one should ask is what is their budget? This should be easy to answer. Secondly, what is the intended use of the firearm? This of course will help direct the individual towards which type of trigger they should be looking at. If this is for a mostly stationary precision kind of shooting, then maybe a 2-stage trigger from Rock River Arms or Geissele would fit the bill. Geissele Automatics probably has one of if not the most extensive line up of trigger options with something for everyone, but there are other such as Timney and Rise Armament that also have some various options. If you are planning on a fast shooting 2 or 3 gun type of competition, then a light trigger with a crisp break and short reset would be in order. There seems to be more options of this variety from Geissele, Timney, Elf and Rise Armament. I have purchased numerous Rise Armament RA-140 triggers over the years from Brownells and these are a very budget priced trigger that perform very well.

Whatever trigger you decide to go with; there really is no right or wrong answer. Everyone has their favorites, and while I do as well, I try and keep an open mind and actually enjoy trying new triggers even from different manufacturers.
