The Browns had no choice but to fire Freddie Kitchens. What’s next?
Tumblr media
David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports
Undisciplined and unfocused play plagued the Browns all season.
The Browns’ frustrating season came to a fitting end in Week 17. The team looked unfocused, undisciplined, and unprepared in a 33-23 loss to the Bengals.
A report Sunday morning from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said the Browns were undecided about the future of Browns coach Freddie Kitchens. “It appears the desired outcome for owner Jimmy Haslam is to keep him,” Rapoport said.
A loss to the worst team in the NFL apparently changed Haslam’s mind. Just a few hours after, the Browns fired Kitchens.

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) December 30, 2019
It was a move that had to be made. The loss to the Bengals made that crystal clear.
The Browns’ loss to the Bengals was a microcosm of the season
The Week 17 win was just the second of the year for Cincinnati. The Bengals finished 2-14 and are now owners of the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
It’s not a good football team, but you wouldn’t know it watching how it played against Cleveland.
Cincinnati’s defense entered the game ranked in the bottom five in the NFL in takeaways and sacks, but managed to intercept Baker Mayfield three times and sack him six times. The Browns started the game with a 46-yard touchdown pass in the opening minutes. The Bengals dominated the next 58 minutes of the game.
Bengals running back Joe Mixon finished with 162 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Cleveland was having trouble enough stopping Mixon when they had 11 on the field, let alone 10 men on defense near the goal line:
THERE GOES @Joe_MainMixon #CLEvsCIN | #SeizeTheDEY pic.twitter.com/b0o1iOQ63V
— Cincinnati Bengals (@Bengals) December 29, 2019
That’s three defensive linemen on the field for Cleveland, a definite mistake for their 4-3 defense. Mixon ran straight up the middle and the Browns didn’t have the big bodies on the field to stop him. The touchdown also came right after a Browns timeout, which:
a) is pretty inexcusable b) meant Kitchens couldn’t call a timeout to get his defense fixed
It’s the kind of mistake that a team may make in preseason. This came in Week 17, long past the point of the season when every team should know exactly what it’s doing.
Kitchens didn’t run the defense, specifically. He was an offensive coach who quickly rose through the ranks to become the Browns’ head coach. But the lack of discipline and preparedness was an issue all year. So was Cleveland’s tendency to play down to its competition.
The Browns didn’t have much to play for after getting officially eliminated from the postseason one week prior. But when the worst team in the NFL looks great, it’s an indictment of the coaching staff, no matter the circumstance. And this wasn’t the first time.
Cleveland also lost to the Brandon Allen-led Broncos in Week 9, and the Duck Hodges-led Steelers in Week 13. Three weeks before losing to the Bengals in Week 17, the Browns squeaked out a too-close-for-comfort 27-19 win over Cincinnati in Week 14. That came when Cleveland was still in the thick of the AFC Wild Card race and desperately needed to come out on top.
Even in a difficult season, the Browns had a chance in December to string together wins and climb into contention. They blew it against mediocre teams instead.
The Browns never figured things out
From day one, Cleveland didn’t look like the Super Bowl contender it was supposed to be in 2019. The Browns opened the year with a 43-13 loss to the Titans in which they committed 18 penalties.
Cleveland finished the season with 122 penalties, the most for the franchise since 1990.
The Haslams wrote in their statement that they “did not see the success or opportunities for improvement” under Kitchens. That’s understandable considering the Browns never improved after their September stumbles. If anything, they got worse both as a football team and as a cohesive unit.
In December alone, Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. were both shown on the sideline in shouting matches with Kitchens. While both players later said the clashes were no big deal, Beckham reportedly spent the latter half of the season begging other teams to trade for him.
The team’s best defensive player, Myles Garrett, missed the last six games of the year after ripping the helmet off of Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph and bashing him over the head with it.
Cleveland’s issues in 2019 weren’t entirely the fault of coaches. The offensive line struggled and some of the most talented players — including Beckham and tight end David Njoku — dealt with injuries. Losing Garrett down the stretch didn’t help either. But there’s little evidence that Kitchens was ever a positive for the team in 2019.
The smart decision was to fire Kitchens. Now the Browns will hunt for a coach who can take the team’s talented roster where it should be right now: in the postseason.
What’s next for the Browns?
The next head coach will be Baker Mayfield’s fourth in three seasons. That’s not ideal, but a change had to be made. The front office could also have a shake up on the way.
With Freddie Kitchens out, I believe #Browns owner Jimmy Haslam will alter the executive layer. I do not believe the power dynamic between GM John Dorsey and chief strategist Paul DePodesta will remain the same. A new structure is going to emerge in the next head coaching search.
— Charles Robinson (@CharlesRobinson) December 30, 2019
The lesson for Cleveland (and every other team, for that matter) is to avoid hiring a coach with that level of inexperience. Hunting for the next Sean McVay is fine, but even the Rams’ wunderkind spent three years as Washington’s offensive coordinator before getting a head coaching gig.
The Browns will likely hunt for a veteran coach this time around. Oddsmakers think so too, and believe former Packers coach Mike McCarthy is the favorite:
Who will be the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns? Mike McCarthy +300 Josh McDaniels +450 Ron Rivera +600 Urban Meyer +800 Kevin Stefanski +1000 Matt Rhule +1500 Via @SportsLine Oddsmakers
— SportsLine (@SportsLine) December 30, 2019
McCarthy was in his 13th season as head coach of the Packers when he was fired in 2018. Along the way, he won a Super Bowl and compiled a 125-77-2 record.
The two coaches behind McCarthy on the oddsmakers’ list have plenty of experience in the NFL too.
McDaniels was the Broncos’ head coach for an unsuccessful and brief stint, but has six Super Bowl wins as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator. The Colts couldn’t convince him to be their head coach in 2018, but Cleveland’s talented roster may do the trick. Rivera has also been to a Super Bowl as a head coach and spent the last nine years leading the Panthers.
The Browns have too much potential to settle for an unproven coach. Cleveland has the luxury to swing for the fences in their coaching search.

The source, Carlson said, alleged that Tony Podesta and a member of the Clinton Foundation had a meeting about how to assist Uranium One, the Russia-owned company that controls 20 percent of U.S. uranium production capacity and whose board members gave more than $100 million to the Clinton Foundation. Training Camp Overreaction Day 6
For those that perhaps haven’t caught on, these training camp articles are meant to be informative but also satirical. Both the good and bad are meant to represent the worst in NFL fans. They are real events that took place but isn’t in any way my evaluation. Now on with the show…
View other training reactions here
If Thursday’s indoor training session is any indication, the Packers are going to be a tough team to beat at night, which is good news considering the Packers are only playing 8 noon games and 5 late games. Stupid Vikings only get 4. Such losers.
The Horrible
I know you think I’m here to be a downer. That’s false. The person that loves you the most is the one that tells you the most truth. I just don’t want you to have false hope. It’s going to be a bad year. Allow me to elaborate.
Kevin King was a bad choice. There were 7,000 great corners in this draft. We got a bad one. First he went and got hurt. Then, he comes back and gets embarrassed. Like real bad embarrassed. Joe Whitt told Rodgers to throw at Kevin King and throw he did. Rodgers hit Nelson three times in a row ending in a TD. Later on, a play in which Rodgers overthrew Cobb, it was noted that King was “several steps behind.” This is the same Randall Cobb that has decided he wants to be full time return man and has had almost 0 impact in training camp.
I know what you’re thinking. C’mon Ryan, it’s Rodgers and Jordy. Cut him some slack. I hear ya. I do. Let me just list a few receivers the Packers are going to run into this year real quick. Doug Baldwin, Julio Jones, A.J. Green, Dez Bryant, Michael Thomas, Antonio Brown, and Mike Evans.
Of that list, Jordy Nelson was listed by PFF as being better than exactly none of them. All of those listed were ranked in the top 20, and every single one of the top 5 receivers will be lined up across from Kevin King this year.
Ask me how much I care that he was matched up against Jordy!
A couple other corner notes, cause those are just oh so fun. Pipkins got yelled at for not understanding how to play zone, and Hawkins was said to have “looked totally lost”.
As a final note, Montgomery still can’t block to save his life. For those who are wondering, no, Montgomery can’t be a 3 down back if he can’t block for Rodgers. Furthermore, the Packers like to play up tempo. Playing up tempo requires players be 3 down players. As of now, the Packers have none that can do it, with the exception of possibly Jamaal Williams.
The Amazing
Lots of good came out of the Packers first indoor practice and first late practice. The first of which came from the amazing new punter for the Green and Gold, Mr. Voguel. Vogel actually smacked the ball so hard he hit the roof. Cause he can!
The wide receivers continue to impress, especially Jeff Janis. First of all, get it out of your head that Janis is going anywhere. His ability on special teams has solidified his spot on the roster. With that said, McCarthy went out of his way to praise Janis and Janis reciprocated by making two impressive catches. One being a one handed TD grab, the other on a fly ball up the sideline. Janis being one of the biggest and fastest receivers on the team (as big as Jordy, as fast as Davis… I feel like no one realizes this) was able to haul in the ball for a huge gain.
Some other receiver highlights, Michael Clark made a freakish leaping catch over Gunter, Davis made a great catch on a pass that should have never been caught, and the better McCaffrey brother is in a fierce competition for the “next great receiver in Green Bay” title. Apparently McCaffrey is ahead by a mile in completion totals in training camp. That’s saying a lot for a guy that isn’t running with the starters.
Running back Aaron Jones turned some heads with his physical style and ability to rip off some big gains. I’m not going to lie, as much as I love Montgomery, having a steady stable of backs that can kill you in different ways excites me. The Patriots make it work.
Pass rushers haven’t turned many heads but Johnathan Calvin’s name emerged as someone that is shining as a pass rusher. In other exciting news, the 4 OLB lineman package, also known as the NASCAR package, was seen on Thursday. Always a fan favorite.
Imagine this for a moment. It’s 3rd and 11. Obvious passing situation. The Packers trot out Matthews, Perry, Fackrell, and Elliot as lineman, Biegel and Josh Jones as linebackers, King and House as boundary corners with Rollins in the slot, and Ha Ha and Burnett roving over the top. Just let it simmer.
I won’t add a link. And I’m not going to brag. I’m not. But he did it again. You guessed it. My man, the most underrated Packer on the 90 man roster, Mr. Quinten Rollins had people’s heads spinning again. Here were his highlights from Thursday.
Rollins breaks up a deep pass at the last minute
Rollins loses a step on Yancey, gains the ground, and is able to strip the ball for an incompletion
Rollins, playing outside, breaks up a quick slant to Martellus Bennett
Offense uses a rub to get Cobb open. Rollins slips through to keep it to a short gain.
The guy has emerged as the top corner and the competition isn’t even close.
Some more good news in the quarterback room. The number 2 quarterback Brett Hundley, who has had a rough start, started to get into a rhythm and was looking fantastic. Hey even Rodgers needs a little time sometimes.
Lastly, as I’m sure you can guess, Mason Crosby nailed all his 8 kicks, kicking from 33 yards to 52 yards. So far this camp, the guy has only missed one kick!
I think the boys are ready. Bring on Philly. Bring on Seattle. Forget that, those guys are toast, bring on Atlanta!
