🛑Stop Paying for Public Domain Art Prints 🖼️

Once something reaches a certain age and the copyright isn’t kept up, it falls under public domain. For example, if an artist does a painting, it would typically become public domain 75 years after that artists death. Unfortunately, some people are using this to take advantage of art-lovers.
People will upload the prints to art websites and sell them connected to print-on-demand shops. The connected shops print, package, and ship for them, so the seller does no work themself, but still makes money.
There are good sellers where you are paying for the work it takes to get a high-quality scan, adjustments, and (often archivable-quality) prints, so I do not mean those. I am instead talking about how you can search for a public-domain work, and several pages of different sellers will come up.
If they are doing no work, you’d think the prices would be close to cost, but no, they overcharge or even have the nerve to have people pay for freely-available digital files. While it is legal for them to do this, it still bothers me.
If you want some public-domain wall art, please either do your research on sellers (to see if they are legit archives) or visit one of many website where you can download artwork, then send them to your local print shop.

Wikimedia Commons: check the copyright before using any images. There are some public domain, and some creative commons works.

Broken Bulb
Brown Butter Peach Tea Custard with Plum Jam
The virus that caused the contrasting colors of the Sempre Augustus was found in many of the prized tulips, including the General and Admiral. The variegated tulips were utterly captivating and cherished above monochrome blooms. Broken bulbs, as they were called, were a mystery to the 17th century Dutch, which made them all the more exciting. Tulips have two different layers of pigments, which blend together normally to create one shade, but when one “breaks,” the colors separate, forming the streaks. The Dutch weren’t aware that the flames of red or purple against a white or yellow ground were caused by a virus of peach tree aphids, but they did know that the virus eventually would weaken the bulbs to the point where they could no longer properly propagate and had to be destroyed.
Some gardeners went to great lengths to try and achieve variegated bulbs. They would pepper paint powders of the coveted colors over tulip beds in hopes that after a rainstorm the hues would be taken up through the bulbs. But the only thing that worked was nature. The peach aphids’ virus suppressed the second layer of color, inducing the spectrum shift. Because of the Dutch obsession with the variegated flowers and the constant weakening of bulbs, we don’t get to admire the same color combinations and patterns that 17th century Dutch traders, collectors, and everyday people could.
