actually
i basically never acknowledge ancients as like "reappearing" in my lore bc shit just happens, you know? and in fairness "species knowledge" is not like, a skill most people have in my lore, because ultimately all dragons are people and people normally don't like look at another person and go ah draconicus sapiens spp. coldii they go ah that's jim, you know?
anyway so my lore never approaches ancients as like, a thing that happened. it's just jim.
but i do have like chronomancy and stuff as a thing in my lore (it's ephram's thing specifically but chronomantic abnormality is an ongoing thing in the County due to how much shard ore is under the soil and functionally what ephram does and what the wasteland can do are the same) so it could be fun to have idk a bobbi-type character that hiked all the way over here just to study the funny time situation going on or something. like could the shard ore time dilation shit be like idk, a useful medical treatment for an aurboborbo?

Do you have some favorite civilian outfits of Bart?
This is actually a top tier question. The answer is: ABSOLUTELY! It’s gonna be hard to choose honestly. Long post incoming
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First are outfits I genuinely like. I’m a sucker for a flannel/button ups over a shirt with jeans. Very gender. I’m also a sucker for those type of striped shirts and that color combo.
The one with Preston is a favorite that I wouldn’t wear myself. I just like it’s vibe. I also like bomber jackets. The triple layers actually work here (in my opinion).
The baseball jersey one is notable as it was when Bart lost his powers during a Flash event and Max was sick. It’ll always have a sad tinge to it but I still like it. Not sure why he’s wearing a New York Yankees jersey though. Show some hometown pride, Bart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next are these 4. First is more of pajamas but I find it to funny not to include. A giant orange tank top that ends right above his knees. 10/10
Next is the outfit he wore as a disguise in Young Justice. I know they’re supposed to look dumb but I still count it. Few people can pull off that look and Bart isn’t one of them. Not sure who those “few people” are but eh.
I had to include Bart’s iconic first day of school outfit. I’m not sure what Ramos’ thought process was here. A lime green turtle neck with a tucked in baseball jersey? Well it was the 90’s. Can’t see it here but I only just realized on a reread that he’s wearing red and white shoes with this outfit.
Then we have another iconic outfit from when he gets the entire school to fight each other. Mostly because I dunno what the thing over his shirt is supposed to be. I’m pretty sure it’s a real thing but it looks goofy.
Lastly we have my all time favorite civilian Bart Allen outfit:
Tumblr media
I love of everything about this outfit. The Flash shirt, the high waisted pants that are way too big on him, bowling style over-shirt, the probably unintentional scuff marks on the shoes (if they were untied it’d be even better). It’s just a top tier outfit.

Let’s chat about poison!
When John first reads about the Rifter in the Payshmura holy texts, Ravishan explains to him how the Rifter is killed:
“One holy man found Parfir’s single finger bone and it guided him. He created a poison to calm the Rifter, and when she slept, he cut off her leg, then used her own hungry bone to bleed her until she couldn’t fight. From Parfir’s single remaining finger bone, the first priest forged a golden key that could open the Rifter’s death. And from the Rifter’s own blood-soaked thigh bone, he carved the first yasi’halaun.”
So, the steps to kill the Rifter:
Poison them with some unnamed poison
Drain their blood with the Yasi’halaun
Suffocate them in Gray Space using the Ush’hala, the golden key
As I was reading, I realized how close Fikiri and Ourath came to accomplishing this during the Bell Dance. Before he arrived in Nurjima, Jath’ibaye had been poisoned. Ourath sends Kyle to him with another (or more of the same) poison. Then, when Kyle is wounded by the Yasi’halaun, Jath’ibaye bears the wound and the sword is fed by his blood. Basically the only step they were missing was the golden key. But, I do wonder if they got the poison right...
There are at least four mind-and/or-body-altering substances mentioned in the story. I’m curious about each of them, so let’s take them one by one.
Niru’mohim (literally translates to hot love. Not joking.)
This is, I guess, a sort of love potion. Or sex potion, more accurately. It affects men more strongly than women, because when Fikiri gives it to Ourath, Ourath asks if he’s going to have to fend off every man in Vundomu, and later Saimura is overcome by its effects while Besh’anya can tolerate it at least somewhat. Niru’mohim is made with blood, and making it with Jath’ibaye’s blood allows it to target him more specifically (and makes it stronger overall). Jath’ibaye claims that Ourath has been using this poison for years to keep Jath’ibaye from breaking up with him. Another interesting note, niru’mohim evidently causes scarring when it’s applied to the skin.
One thing that isn’t totally clear to me: the wearer of niru’mohim seems to be the seducer, rather than the seduced. Alidas mentions that whores will wear niru’mohim until their arms are covered in ropey scars. And yet, Kahlil thinks that the poison he was sent to deliver to Jath’ibaye was niru’mohim. From Jath’ibaye’s point of view, that would be a devious plan: Find a young man who looks like his dead lover, give him a vial of seduction juice, and send him to the glass palace to try to get some kind hold over Jath’ibaye. But, in reality, Kyle wasn’t supposed to be delivering the niru’mohim to Jath’ibaye. It was supposed to be Fensal, the other Lisam runner. So, was that poison really niru’mohim? Why give the poison *to” Jath’ibaye when it seems to work by being worn on the skin of someone who is trying to affect him? I think it’s possible that the poison that Kyle delivers to Jath’ibaye is actually something else, probably the same thing that he had been dosed with already, since we know that he was poisoned before arriving in Nurjima. Whatever he was given left him pale and feverish, which is basically the exact opposite of how Kahlil describes Jath’ibaye when he’s under the influence of niru’mohim at the Fai’daum party. Whichever poison Jath’ibaye might have given isn’t entirely clear, but it probably wasn’t niru’mohim.
Fathi
Fathi is interesting. On my first read, I thought fathi might be the poison that is given to the Rifter in the ritual of their death (which I’m going to call the Step 1 poison), because we know that it works on John and its effects sound like what the Step 1 poison should do: calm them so that the Kahlil can drain their blood and lock them in Gray Space. However, we later hear about another poison that is identified as the Step 1 poison: tumah’itam. Still, it’s interesting that the two are so similar. John actually compares the effects of Fathi with tumah’itam when he drinks the latter with Samsango in the prison.
Fathi can be brewed (Hann’yu brews it for the priests at Rathal’pesha), and whatever it’s made from might be a seasonally available plant, because Dayyid and Hannyu drink some together and discuss how this year’s batch is better than last year’s.
Tumah’itam (literally translates to peace and quiet)
Tumah’itam is, allegedly, the Step 1 poison: the poison that is used to aid in the death of the Rifter. It obviously doesn’t kill them, since John has drunk it twice and survived, but it seems to sedate him to the point where he dissociates for a while and can’t prevent his body from being harmed. Tumah’itam is kept on hand at Rathal’pesha and used in euthanasias for dying priests (if they are of a high enough rank).
Now, it’s interesting to note that Fikiri claims to have poisoned Jath’ibaye before he arrives in Nurjima. He says that the poison that Jath’ibaye was given wouldn’t kill him but would “aid his demise”. So it sounds like Fikiri thinks that whatever poison he gave Jath’ibaye is the Step 1 poison. But if Loshai thinks that tumah’itam is the poison that kills the Rifter, she might not have shared that information with Fikiri. Because whatever affects John is feeling from the poisoning, it’s definitely not the extreme, but short-lived, paralysis that comes from tumah’itam.
Goatweed
All of this brings me here, to goatweed. More than any other poison discussed in the series, goatweed intrigues me and makes me very suspicious.
First of all, there are a *ton* of random references to goatweed. Ravishan uses it to make himself seem sick so that Dayyid doesn’t wonder where he was while he was hanging out with Jahn in the wilderness. Kahlil finds some growing in Jath’ibaye’s indoor garden. After Kahlil’s memories return, when he is sick from the stress and guilt, he blames his illness on eating goatweed, which Yu’mir pesters his about until he explains what it does and what it looks like. Hann’yu requests goatweed as one of the herbs that he wants Jahn to bring back to Rathal’pesha from Amura’taye.
So, aside from a bunch of characters being interested in goatweed, what do we know about it?
It induces vomiting if the leaves are ingested
The leaves and stems cause skin irritation for witches and ushiri’im
It grows in the northern parts of Basawar
The leaves are gray with orange tips
It smells “musky” or “earthy”
In rural areas the call it “whores-torch” and use it to test for witchcraft
The roots of the plant can be distilled into a powerful poison
In Rathal’pesha they distill goatweed into a poison that Hann’yu describes as “potent enough to lay even a god low.”
And it was that phrasing right there that really interested me. Knowing that Hann’yu brews the Fathi for the priests at Rathal’pesha, and knowing that he will also be distilling the goatweed into a potent god-killing poison, my guess is that tumah’itam is made from goatweed, and that this is the Step 1 poison.
It’s hard to draw any meaningful conclusions from all of this, unfortunately. All I can say is that it seems like Ginn Hale went to great lengths to draw our attention to goatweed and make sure we knew what it did. If tumah’itam isn’t made from goatweed, then I would posit that it can’t be the Step 1 poison because there is no way that goatweed isn’t somehow involved. That would be an unfired Chekov’s Gun of massive proportions. If, however, I’m right and tumah’itam is made from goatweed and it is also the Step 1 poison… well, I’m not sure what the significance of that is. Other than to allow us all to, once again, marvel at the meticulous amount of detail that Ginn provides for any reader who cares to look for it.

A group of some pallet challenges!
Sometimes I do one of these as a warm up before doing bigger projects cause they’re fun to do. In picture order, we have Cavalia, Viro, Len, Sadi, and a Rifter.
Cavalia and Sadi are known as Mutants, or Metas, cause they both have unique powers and abilities. Len and Viro are the best of friends and would go on adventures together. And the Rifter is a deer-like animal creature that lives in the forests.

WHO is the cutest couple in your clan? :3
Tumblr media
ALL of them but among the truly adorable are Strawfoot (imp, she/her) and Buckshot (SD, she/her).
Strawfoot is a thaumaturge whose specialty lies in enchanting handwriting, usually her own though any handwritten work will do. she made a lot of trouble for herself in the Sunbeam Ruins causing rich people's wills, contracts, and other written deeds to blow up, among other things. Strawfoot was eventually caught at her crimes, magically bound and exiled from the Ruins. she had meant to cross into the Isles, but ended up running into trouble in the Wasteland, where she was aided by Buckshot, a local monster wrangler and general badass.
the two hit it off and Strawfoot soon forgot to go to the Isles at all. they've had some bumps in the road (mostly to do with Strawfoot's past) but they have managed to sort the worst of it out. Buckshot put all her earnings towards buying one of them fancy house kits and they built a small house together near the edge of the Flat (the town where most of my lore happens).
there they live very lesbianly together (in the wifely way), baking blacktongue pepper pies and entertaining a colourful array of guests whenever Buckshot is on leave from monster wrangling. neither one of them expected a happy ending but they got one and they deserve it :3c

I hate this scene for a multitude of reasons but I hate how they seriously made young justice hate themselves as an excuse to break them up. The one of points of young justice was teen heroes hanging out and having someone who gets.
Also the Teen Titans fucked up so much Tim what the fuck.
First of all and most blatant: The Judas Contract was pretty major
Tumblr media
Second: pretty much every cover of the original teen titans involved the team getting their asses kicked.
Tumblr media
The teen Titans and Titans fucked up so much and that’s blatant from the pure amount of members they’ve had.
There was the thing with Jerico.
Tumblr media
Literally so much stuff with Raven??
The Teen Titans barely, if ever, were in control of a situation. They messed up so much.
So no, they weren’t “a lot like us when they started” they were worse.
I will forever be bitter about Graduation Day.

I'd love to hear about Quartz Sphinx! How'd they get together and end up at the saloon?
YEA Quartz Sphinx!!
the 2 core members are Bree and Klaxon.
Klaxon had been a solo artist for a while, mostly doing vocal work and occasionally pairing up with other musical acts around the Flat in a transitory way. nothing really stuck and Klaxon felt like he would kind of just float around like that for a while. the saloon is known for having the occasional "open stage night" where local talent can come around to showcase either their music or poetry or some kind of performance of that general variety, and Klaxon would both show up as a regular during these nights to perform as well as stay and watch the other performers.
one of these nights, Bree showed up to play. Klaxon immediately fell in love with Bree's banjo work and was compelled to approach him. since both of them have supernatural and slightly sinister explanations for their musical ability, they were initially very cautious of each other, but very quickly formed a tight professional/working relationship once they cottoned on to their similarities. they've never talked about their abilities outright in That Way, but y'know. they can tell.
the idea of a proper band followed soon after, mostly because the saloon's proprietor, Madrigal, basically just said you boys oughta start a band. no one is sure if he meant it, but the idea had merit, and Quartz Sphinx was born shortly thereafter. they originally just stuck to playing the open stage nights, but when Madrigal saw how much extra business they drew in, he offered them a regular schedule at the saloon and things just kind of took off from there.
Tulip joined a bit later, as the other two were looking to elaborate on their sound and put out some feelers for another member. Tulip intended to stay only for a season or two (being at the time on the run for having a bass made out of Actually The Behemoth) to make some extra cash but then she just felt so at ease with the band that she's just. stayed. the other 2 would probably latch onto her legs if she tried to leave the band at this point, because no one can deny that her bass brings a whole lot of extra Oomph to what the band's got going on.

Who leads your clan and how did they become leader?
the Flat of Her Hand (aka the Flat) is the town in which most of my dragons live and where the most organised civilisation happens. the original structures of the Flat, which are mostly some old houses and a mysterious church building that has since been converted into a saloon, pre-date the Rifters who currently live there. local lore maintains that Lemon (re)discovered the Flat and for this reason he is largely considered as sort of the "founder" of the town, though of course the town owes its modern existence to a wide variety of people and factors all pulling together to make things work.
in general, however, it's considered at the very least tradition to involve Lemon in anything Big that happens around the Flat. he generally does not throw his weight around very much unless he feels very strongly about something, but he accepts that others view him as a powerful and respectable entity and follows decorum accordingly, giving his blessing to, among other things, important legal proceedings and the unveiling of any new town facilities as the need requires.
he also says a blessing over every amaranth crop at the turn of the year, though he even he has no idea why. his powers are to make things rot, not grow. he suspects everyone views his amaranth crop blessing as a kind of reverse psychology trick on bad luck.

What’s magueyhood?? Please give the lore!!
ooo I haven't actually written much of this down yet so this oughta be a fun exercise
basically all (*not including Neatsfoot georg, who is an outlier and should not be counted) my spruce/maroon dragons are named after various types of agave (maguey) and in-lore are spirits (yes) who wander the Wasteland.
most of them have features reminiscent of magueys, for example:
Cuixe's beard is made up of young blades of agave Tobala's wings are large and butterfly-like, made of overlapping agave leaves (specifically Agave potatorum) and her companion, a giant toridae, has scutes and scales that are similarly agave-like Pichomel has pale eyes the colour and texture of pulque (a drink made of fermented agave sap) Cenizo has skin the same texture as agave leaves
they don't do much business with dragons aside from the few who seek them out, for example Rodomontade is a self-described "spiritual intercessor" who usually just sells alcohol but also has a close working relaionship with the agave spirits and can act as a go-between for those seeking boons. (the agave spirits all have various powers or areas of influence, for example Cuixe's boon can lead the recipient unerringly to water in the Wasteland.)
they are largely concerned with having a good time amongst themselves (some are more pro-mortals than others and will party with dragons if they cross paths) and acting as fierce protectors of the wilderness.
thank you for the ask!

so basically in my lore undead works like this:
the primary religious faction in the County are the Wounders. a chief ideological concern of Wounders is the notion of free will, that all dragons must be free to make their own decisions without the interference of another person or entity. (this is why Wounder doctrine is unfriendly towards traditional guardians and would absolutely lose their minds over imperials if anyone knew.) County law, while not strictly speaking theological in nature, is influenced by this facet of Wounder doctrine and certain laws exist to protect inhabitants from things which may subvert their free will (this includes necromancy).
Wounders generally believe that undead persons (specifically dragons, they have different ideas for animals and beastkin) are thralls, that the "becoming undead" part was thrust on them by a third party -- ergo, the free will of the undead person has been subverted. County law prohibits the use of necromancy in all forms, especially where it concerns its use on dragons.
therefore, generally speaking:
- being undead is not a crime, however,
- the means by which you became undead are, and also,
- as an undead you will not, strictly speaking, have full legal protections under County law.
that being said, the term "undead" is broad and includes a lot of variations and subsets, from reanimated corpses to thralls to the ab-deads, dragons who have continued to experience life following their death and live more or less normal lives. County folk don't know a lot about the varieties of undead that exist and generally believe the term "undead" to exclusively mean a reanimated corpse being steered around by magic for nefarious purposes.
there is a growing subset of County denizens who believe in a local entity known as the Queen Creosote, a kind of protector spirit of the Wasteland. the Queen Creosote is believed to occasionally bring those who die near her roots back to an undead state due to a general sense of waste not, want not. dragons brought back this way tend to return with a religious zeal and sense of purpose and devote themselves to various causes or needy populations within the Wasteland.
generally speaking Wounders don't abhor undead individuals, but it might get weird when they invite you over for coffee and try to gently talk you into relinquishing your reanimate life force for the greater good.
