Memorial Service

   Ok, I didn’t actually DO this, but one of my ideas for the *perfect* memorial service for my father was to ask any of the cousins who have offroad-capable vehicles to bring them, and then do timed runs from the house, past the sawmill, through Hickory Hollow, and up the north cell tower road. The person in the passenger seat would have had some type of gun* and be blasting away out the side window at random intervals.

   The bridge to the sawmill sits at an angle AND has siderails, so you’d have to hit that pretty carefully to get across at speed; there’s a right angle pointing uphill just past the sawmill (turns are trickier on gravel roads, just trust me on that); the minor eroded gulleys at the top of the hollow and again just before the ascent to Hidden Hollow are pretty {CRUNCH!} rough on the suspension if you don’t hit them at just the right speed and angle.

   I know just how silly this all sounds. But on some level, I was dead serious about it. I could picture my father, in spirit, whopping and hollering about the engine noise and Appalachian chaos. We DIDN’T do it . . . but I’ll always regret it just a little.

(You could get up quite a bit of speed, here, before abruptly needing to make a right turn just behind the camera range. Yee. Haw.)

* “Riding shotgun” used to mean something, dammit!
