Rebranding, rerouting planned for county bus system  | Local News
Rebranding, rerouting planned for county bus system  | Local News
After more than a decade without any significant changes, the county bus system is being overhauled. Niagara County Rural Transportation is underutilized and often has low ridership, data shows. The bulk of funds for the bus service come from the state and federal governments; fares make up less than 5% of the system’s operating revenue. The service is run by the county Department of Public Works…

"I hope they build seven new Skytrain lines, just to piss you off."
– Me muttering under my breath after overhearing someone I know complain that an as-yet-entirely-hypothetical-unless-I-missed-something Skytrain line along Hastings would be a waste of money "just to get to the PNE"

thinking about Elesa in the Emmet in Hisui AU (and I guess also the Giratina’s Deal AU)- namely, the fact that she ends up taking care of the bulk of Emmet and Ingo’s Pokemon while they’re missing! It’s a tall order, but one that she’s determined to carry out because at least it’s something she can do, especially as the search for them drags on without any clues as to their whereabouts.
It is still a lot of Pokemon, though- even with Eelektross and Archeops going missing with their trainer. Plus these are all Pokemon that are used to battling frequently, and they all get kind of antsy if they don’t. She can use Emmet’s Galvantula in her gym (and she knows he would let her), but what about the rest?
Well, Drayden is happy to look after Haxorus, and happy to incorporate it into his team for gym battles. Iris offers to look after Excadrill, rotating it and her Aggron on her Champion team. Garbodor is just happy to go to Gear Station every day and eat trash and hang out. But what about the rest?
Gear Station and the Battle Subway is obviously hurting after the sudden disappearance of both of its Bosses. Thankfully, the Depot Agents are able to run the Subway part smoothly, but the battle part... they can keep the trains running, but ridership definitely goes down without the Subway Bosses. Elesa knows how sad that would make the twins, so she offers her services on an occasional basis, and it lets her give Ingo and Emmet’s Pokemon a workout in their favorite environment. She knows they’d all prefer to battle with their trainers, but they trust Elesa and seem to enjoy battling with her. And it helps her too, making her feel a little more connected to her friends who are somewhere far from her.

If you are thinking about it on paper, the bus running every half hour doesn't sound so bad, until you're waiting at the stop and you miss a bus or it's delayed. Then you're waiting a very, very long time. To people who never take transit, that's probably fine. Why do you care. To people who only take transit, they're expecting it, it's baked in their lives. But the important part, what really impacts our cities, is what happens to people for whom transit is an option.
The spiral goes like this. You go to take the bus instead of driving, thinking "I'm going to o have a couple drinks" or "I don't want to worry about parking where I'm going." So you take bus. First bus is right on time. But then you transfer from your neighborhood line to the line that takes you where you actually want to go. And your bus is delayed. And it only comes every 30 minutes. And then you're waiting, 40 minutes later, wondering where your bus is, knowing you could have driven there in 20 minutes.
Why would you ever chose to take a bus again? The bus made you waste precious time on your day off just sitting there. So next time you drive. Ridership goes down. When the transit authority asks for more money for more buses and more drivers, people point to the ridership numbers and say "why should we pay for this instead of paying for our schools/police/baseball stadium/parks/police again (let's be real that's who's taking all the money)?" If we want to increase ridership we need to actually design and fund functional transit networks. If we want people to actually ride the bus we need to make it a better option than driving, which means reliable service, which you don't get with a bus every 30 minutes.
Every 15 minutes, everywhere, all of the time.

A bill has been proposed by Georgia Congressman Hank Johnson to have the federal government increase subsidies of Public transit by 80 billion dollars in major US cities to help systems recover from the post Covid decline in service and ridership. Allowing for an increase in frequency, and additional funding for passes for low income residents. The bill is called the Stronger Communities Through Better Transit Act

The Sergeant manages to smuggle in a toy Circuit Chap, using Veneziana’s unresolved feelings for the Inspector.
That Circuit Chap looks awfully familiar, too. What’s it doing? Opening up to allow an entire army of Circuit Chaps into W.I.T. headquarters? Now, *that’s* pretty impressive.

Elevating America’s Public Transit Systems Through Digital Technology
Tumblr media
As the world re-emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, transportation providers in the U.S. are facing challenges around the rider experience   with primary concerns like health and safety and expectations for sustainable public transportation systems. Transit agencies have their work cut out for them to meet these demands while dealing with labor shortages, supply chain issues and competition from ride-share services.
In addition, transportation providers are caught in a cycle of constrained spending and innovation. Transit agencies rely upon subsidies for financial support. As a result, they have been reluctant to invest in technology that would improve their services — so riders choose other methods of transportation. This in turn reduces the likelihood that the transit agencies will be able to be self-supporting, which leads them to continue to rely on subsidies. The federal government is currently attempting to address this loop with new investments in infrastructure improvements.
At Hitachi, we see these challenges as opportunities to innovate — and to elevate public transit systems in the U.S. We’ve partnered with Syniverse to offer modular technology solutions to these organizations so they can increase rider engagement and value while reducing the friction between passengers and their transit systems.
Keeping Up With the Pace of Change by Utilizing Digital Solutions
While transportation providers need to keep up with consumer demand, they also need to keep up with technology. By leveraging Syniverse’s CPaaS (Communications Platform as a Service) Concierge solution, Hitachi offers digital solutions that can be customized to elevate the rider experience. Each city’s transit system is different and has special requirements, so we designed this solution to be able to integrate with any carrier or telematics system. We’ve included modular building blocks that allow transportation providers to select the types of capabilities they want to introduce to their ridership, such as vehicle status, notifications and other communications. For example, using these modules, riders can sign up for alerts, ask for route status information and more — and they can do so through any wireless carrier.
Transforming Baton Rouge’s Transportation Experience
Hitachi collaborated with Capital Area Transit System (CATS) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to improve rider experiences. To start, we engaged with CATS and its operational stakeholders to find out what riders really care about. It turns out that the needs were fairly basic, such as having visibility into the timing and status of bus arrival.
CATS had a Computer-Aided Dispatch/Automatic Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) solution that attempted to fulfill this need with an add-on, rudimentary SMS-based system that notified riders of a bus’s status, but it didn’t solve the real problem. We brainstormed ways to leverage this existing system to better serve passengers and came upon a quirk specific to Baton Rouge: The city has a regular rider community, but it also has a large rider community that only uses the bus system when there is an event like a football game.
Armed with this information, we built a system that notifies bus riders of coupons, so riders distribute themselves among a number of bus stops. This in turn reduces congestion and lines at stops during events and improves the rider experience. The system can offer other marketing opportunities for transit agencies, such as sending riders a coupon for a free coffee if a bus is late. With these types of capabilities, CATS sees better rider satisfaction, and the local merchant community gets to participate in this public service — tapping into a hyperlocal audience.

What Next?
We believe transit agencies do not have to decide between improving the rider experience and improving operational efficiency. You can have both, and Hitachi is helping agencies like yours break the cycle of constrained spending and innovation to realize those goals around the U.S. We’re your partner to deliver real, long-term results to both your riders and your organization through digital technology solutions.

Welcome to the stunningly beautiful, but abandoned, New York City Hall station.
Tumblr media
Abandoned for more than 70 yrs., it had chandeliers and beautiful leaded glass skylights.
Tumblr media
But, by 1945, the newer, longer subway cars could no longer fit on the station’s curved tracks, so it was closed.
Tumblr media
The City Hall station was designed by the architects Heins & LaFarge, notable for their work at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
Tumblr media
Today, the ticket booths and wooden benches are gone, and many of the skylights are broken or still retain the tar that was used to black them out during WWII.
Tumblr media
In addition to the Transit Museum’s tours, (you have to be a member and tickets sell out quickly), you can catch a glimpse of the subway station if you stay on the downtown 6 train after it leaves the Brooklyn Bridge station, as it will loop through the City Hall station to head back uptown.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They were going to widen it, but ridership fell off (well, of course it did, it was closed. Duh!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The entrances underwent a $17K cleanup.
Tumblr media
And are still there.
