Rebranding, rerouting planned for county bus system  | Local News
After more than a decade without any significant changes, the county bus system is being overhauled. Niagara County Rural Transportation is underutilized and often has low ridership, data shows. The bulk of funds for the bus service come from the state and federal governments; fares make up less than 5% of the system’s operating revenue. The service is run by the county Department of Public Works…

The Greater Toronto has Expanded over the last 30 Years
GTA includes two single tier municipalities (Hamilton and Toronto) and four regional municipalities (Durham, Halton, Peel and York), as well as their 24 lower tier municipalities. Hamilton, Niagara Regional Municipality, Kitchener Waterloo and Guelph have significant connections to the Toronto Subway and the Greater Toronto area, but are too far away to be officially part of the GTA. The Greater Toronto District begins in the Halton-Burlington Regions and runs east along Lake Ontario past downtown Toronto to Clarington in the Durham Region.
Toronto includes a geographic area previously administered by several independent municipalities. The city has 25 municipalities directly under the Central Government, including urban areas, residential areas and rural areas. The GTA is the largest metropolitan area in Canada and the fourth largest metropolitan area in North America. It is centred on Toronto and has an official population of 5,033,541 (2001). In addition to the city of Toronto, it also includes four separate regional municipalities and Georgina’s Chippewas Island Wildlife Sanctuary.
The city of Toronto is also part of it, as are the regional municipalities of Durham, Halton, Peel and York. The population of this city is 6,417,516 according to the latest statistical census of Canada for 2016. Toronto is the capital of the province of Ontario and the most populous city in Canada with a population of over 2.7 million. The Greater Toronto Area (GTA), formerly the housing and economic center of Canada, is also one of the fastest growing regions in North America with a population of over 5 million.

Today, the GTA covers the Peel, York and Durham regions, which are directly adjacent to the current metropolitan area of the City of Toronto. Some municipalities considered to be part of the GTA are outside the Toronto Metropolitan Area (CMA), land area (5,904 km2 [2,280 sq mi] in 2006) [13] and population (5,928,040 at the 2016 census) [14] therefore smaller than the area and population of the GTA planning zone. For example, Oshawa is the center of its own CMA but is considered part of Greater Toronto, while other municipalities such as New Tecumseth in Southern Simcoe and Mono Township in Dufferin County are included but not included in the Toronto CMA. GTA. In addition, there are three small towns west of Toronto (Brampton, Oakville, and Burlington) that have their own local bus systems.
York Region Transit operates buses in the York Region north of Toronto. Durham Region Transit operates a local bus service in the Durham area east of Toronto, serving towns between Toronto and Oshawa. Regional transportation agency Metrolinx operates the Presto toll system, which allows users to pay for the entire Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas, as well as Ottawa.
GO trains and some GO bus lines run to Union Station in downtown Toronto, which is connected to the subway station of the same name. Buses replace train lines when they are out of service, most GO buses leave from Yorkdale and York Mills subway stations in northern Toronto, and many use the Union Station bus terminal across the street rather than the train station. While parking in downtown Toronto is expensive, driving remains comfortable for many areas of the GTA (or necessary on the outskirts of the GTA).
Toronto is perhaps the most cosmopolitan city in Canada, if not all of North America. Writer and actor Pyotr Ustinov described Toronto as New York ruled by the Swiss. Toronto is the anchor of the region known as the Golden Horseshoe in Southern Ontario, located on the shores of Lake Ontario. The city is the financial capital of Canada, and the Toronto Stock Exchange is the seventh largest stock exchange in the world by market capitalization.
The city is also home to the Toronto Stock Exchange. It is the headquarters of Canada's largest bank and the headquarters of many multinational companies. The city center has the highest free-standing building in North America, the CN Tower, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, Chinatown, and the city’s old and new city halls. Other plazas include the Harbour Plaza on Toronto’s waterfront and the defunct public plaza of the former City Hall of Toronto Metropolitan City Hall, the most famous being Mel Lastman Plaza in North York. Old Toronto is also home to many historic and affluent residential areas, such as Yorkville and Rosedale.
There are still factories and industrial districts in the west of Old Toronto and York, Weston / Mount Dennis and Junction. In Scarborough, the Toronto Zoo occupies a large area in the eastern end, where you can see a variety of exotic animals and Canadian wildlife.
West of Toronto and north of Mississauga, you'll find inspirational artwork by local artists throughout the city that showcases Brampton's growing cultural life. By far the most rural region of Greater Toronto, Halton is renowned for its magnificent landscapes, including the Niagara Escarpment (a protected area of the world) and Lake Ontario. The immediate neighbour to the west is the Peel region, made up of 3 municipalities, as well as Pearson International Airport, Canada's largest international airport.
The city of Burlington and the cities of Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills. More than 180 languages and dialects are spoken in Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton, and half of the city's population was born outside of Canada. The region's diverse population reflects its role as a primary destination for immigrants to Canada.
The term GTA has been adopted by several organizations, including Metrolinx and the Department of Energy, due to the growing suburban population in the combined region. While much of the use of area 905 as a shortcut to suburban areas outside the city of Toronto was correct, this is not entirely true as some parts of the Durham and York regions use the 705 prefix.
Statistics Canada also found in 2006 that there were 31,910 Aboriginals in the Greater Toronto Area, accounting for 2.7% of all Aboriginals in Canada and 13.2% of Aboriginals in Ontario. Major shopping centers: Toronto Eaton Center and Hudson Bay Center in Toronto/Downtown, 401 in Toronto/North York and Yorkdale Shopping Center in Allen Road, Downtown Scarborough in Toronto/Scarborough, Toronto /Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke and Square One in Mississauga.
Parts of the region remain agricultural land and forests, making them one of the defining features of geography. We recognize this land out of respect for the indigenous peoples who have taken care of Turtle Island, also called North America, from the arrival of the settlers until today.
