Character Profile: Connor Hawke (Green Arrow II)
It's time to meet another member of the Lost Titans! The most beautiful boy in the world: Connor Hawke!
Tumblr media
Connor is the oldest biological child of Oliver Queen and the second Green Arrow. He was introduced in 1994, possibly the best year for blorbos of all time, although readers didn't know that he was Ollie's son right away.
(His mother, we would eventually learn, is Sandra "Moonday" Hawke, who had a brief, no strings relationship with Ollie during their hippie days. Moonday has a Black father and a Korean mother, and is charmingly flaky with a shitty abusive new husband, the arms dealer Milo Armitage, who Connor butted heads with repeatedly in his solo series.)
Tumblr media
At the time, Ollie was smack dab in the middle of a nervous breakdown, as well as injured (Connor helped patch him up, hence the line about seeing him naked). He'd taken refuge in a Buddhist ashram where he'd once found peace.
At the time, Connor was about 18 and had been at the ashram for five years. He was a big Green Arrow fanboy and the two quickly bonded. He was also an aspiring archer, although his archery was just okay, while his hand-to-hand combat was superb. (In the 90s, Connor was ranked as the fifth best martial artist in the DCU, which means he's better than Nightwing. (The top four are probably Lady Shiva, Richard Dragon, Bronze Tiger, and Batman. Cass Cain didn't exist yet.))
When assassins came to the ashram to kill Ollie, Ollie and his ex-CIA frenemy Eddie Fyers fled. Connor insisted on coming with them. Eddie guessed the truth about Connor, but Ollie was still in the dark until Hal Jordan, in the middle of his own Parallax-induced breakdown, showed up out of nowhere and asked Ollie to introduce him to his son.
Ollie...didn't handle the news well.
Tumblr media
Ollie's nervous breakdown only escalated from here on out, and he eventually wound up dying in a helicopter explosion (though he did go out a hero, saving all of Metropolis). Connor decided that though Oliver Queen had disappointed him, the world could still use a Green Arrow - and maybe if he walked in his father's shoes for a bit, he could try to understand him a little bit better.
Connor spent about five years as the only Green Arrow, traveling the world with Eddie as a curmudgeonly mentor figure. He quickly made a few superhero friends, most notably Tim Drake and of course the new Green Lantern, Kyle Rayner:
Tumblr media
Kyle 100% STOLE THIS MOVE FROM ROY and that will always be funny to me.
Connor was briefly on the JLA before deciding (much like his father had before him) that he felt more effective and comfortable on the ground, helping individuals rather than fighting cosmic horrors. Eventually, the GA book was canceled and Connor decided to return to the ashram, trying to find what he was searching for by looking within, rather than by cosplaying as his dad.
In 2001, Ollie returned. Connor basically magically sensed that his father was back and in danger, and raced off to help him fight demons. Ollie, for his part, gave up his chance at staying at peace in Heaven in order to save Connor's life. Once the demons were defeated, Ollie seriously committed himself to getting to know his son and making up for lost time. They moved into a house together in Star City, along with Mia Dearden, a teenage former sex worker Ollie had taken under his wing. Connor and Mia quickly became very close.
There were a couple of major Connor-related developments early on in this run: first, Connor was shot in the head by the supervillain Onomatopoeia, though he survived thanks to quick emergency services and a blood transfusion from Ollie. And second, it was revealed that Ollie had always known about Connor, had been there for his birth, and just lied to everyone when he said he didn't have a kid. I hate this retcon, which to me makes Ollie's behavior irredeemably horrible - not just to Connor, but to Dinah and Roy, too. Brad Meltzer isn't the greatest writer when it comes to paying attention to past continuity, characterization, or, uh, logic. But my rant about how Archer's Quest sucks is a separate post. Anyway just know I will never acknowledge this retcon in a fic. I spit on it. Ptoo.
During this time, and really ever since his origin, there was speculation about Connor's sexuality. Connor is a very reserved, introverted character and was canonically a virgin when he was introduced (and still is, unless you count "sex" with a ghost where he didn't even get his pants off), and this of course stood in marked contrast to Ollie and Roy, both loud extroverted horn dogs. The fact that women were constantly throwing themselves at a blatantly uninterested Connor didn't help:
Tumblr media
Ollie, Roy, and Kyle all flat-out asked Connor if was gay, which at the time he always denied, but he also explained to Roy that he was looking for The One, which I just love, because so was Roy, just in a different way! Everyone always says that Connor is so different from Ollie and Roy, and they're not wrong, but that's something they absolutely have in common: they are all hopeless romantics.
Connor's life was pretty good immediately after Ollie's return (getting shot in the head notwithstanding), but no writer really seemed to know what to do with him. There was an attempt to give him a spotlight again in the Connor Hawke: Dragon's Blood miniseries, which is...fine, I guess? Connor is forced to kill a supervillain who is trying to turn into a dragon and destroy the world. Also he makes out with Shado, the woman who raped Ollie in the early 90s, which is...certainly a thing that happened. (Connor wasn't going to be gay on Chuck Dixon's watch, nosirree!) (And actually I think the whole Shado issue is extremely complicated but there's no denying that the Shado/Connor kiss was really, really off. But my Shado rant is yet another post!) There's some interesting character stuff there but overall the miniseries has been mostly forgotten.
In the second half of the 2000s, things got shitty for Connor, just like they did for basically every character. First, he was shot with a bullet laced with a toxin that left him in a coma:
Tumblr media
God Cliff Chiang draws him so beautifully.
Anyway, Connor was just sort of...left in the coma for a while. Eventually he was kidnapped and Ollie had to rescue him. There's a long stretch where Connor's body is just sort of used as a prop without any actual personhood involved, which is...really, really not a great way to use a BIPOC character? Oof.
When Connor finally woke up from the coma, he a) had amnesia, b) had a healing factor because of spliced in DNA from Plastic Man???, c) none of his old personality or character traits anymore (he had no archery prowess, was no longer a vegetarian, etc.). He then wandered off to find himself. Again: I love that Ollie came back, but aggressively sidelining Connor in Ollie's stories and/or only allowing him to be a victim for Ollie to save or a wise prop to serve Ollie and Mia's stories, then writing him off by putting him in a coma, then literally having him leave the book, was NOT GREAT.
Connor returned for Blackest Night and its aftermath, when he was like "Hey Dad, I have my memory back for no reason now, and also? I hate you."
Then the New 52 happened and Connor stopped existing. But don't worry! The ensuing years brought us not one but three riffs on the character who were all entirely white! (The New 52 Earth-Two version of Connor who looks like Roy, the Injustice "Connor Queen" who is the biological son of Ollie and Dinah, and Oliver's kid on Arrow and yes I know Connor Hawke is a separate character on that show but it was still a very bad look.)
Connor finally returned to us in 2021 as one of Damian's competitors during the assassin tournament on Lazarus Island. The two quickly bonded, and Damian was one of the first people Connor came out to as asexual (FINALLY):
Tumblr media
Currently, Connor is appearing in Green Arrow as his family tries to find a way to be together and locate all of their missing members. It hasn't really been explained where he was or how he ended up in the clutches of the League of Shadows on Lazarus Island, and might never be explained. He also hasn't reunited with Ollie yet, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing it (and someday Kyle maybe please?).
In conclusion: I love Connor very, very much, he deserves better than what he got for the past 15 years or so, and I'm very happy he's back in comics and allowed to actually be queer, connected to his Korean heritage, making friends outside of Ollie's sphere, etc. Mazel tov, baby.

woke up to njpw tweeting that bryan is wrestling okada in january and all i can think is "someone should be stepping in and telling him no. why arent they." youve made many posts expressing this type of sentiment esp since the stevie richards video that aew had taken down, and the refrain of like, "where are the agents, where are the trainers, the medical staff, the coaches, the refs, why is nobody protecting these performers from themselves when that should be like their primary job" weighs heavy on my mind lately. genuinely a disgrace. Sorry to come into your inbox to spread misery for no good reason btw, i just know you understand this perspective. nothing to do with you or me sending this but i also hope to see this become like a ~discourse~ topic on wrestling twitter or whatthefuckever, not that im optimistic it will lol. i just honestly think this should be talked about publicly with concern about accountability bc its alarming
I'm happy getting bonked on the head did at least help Mox come to the conclusion (although I thought he went through similar shit as Punk at the end in WWE) that AEW needs better concussion protocols and better refs. Let's hope he's not just talking to the press about it but also to his boss.
And I don't think I need to remind people Meltzer said Punk was sending mysterious legal letters, making everyone's life more difficult and didn't want to job to Mox (or whatever Meltzer implied) when he was actually just not medically cleared yet and didn't want to wrestle without clearance.
I don't know how badly injured Bryan is, I think they said he should be back by the end of the year, but you know, he also came back earlier from his broken arm. I don't know if he offered to do it or TK asked him, I think it was the latter but you know even if he offered it to save the PPV for the fans and for Ricky, TK should have said no.
Well, it's all a big *sigh*. I know this isn't just a AEW issue but I wish they'd be better about it, especially since they are running a retirement home.

"....IT WAS FUELED IN PART BY A DYNAMIC MUSIC SCENE IN WORKING-CLASS DETROIT..."
PIC INFO: Spotlight on the original "CREEM" staff, the late, great Lester Bangs among them. 📸: Richard Lee.
"Founded in 1969, "CREEM" at its best was the blunt, hilarious alternative to Rolling Stone, calling itself “America’s only rock ’n’ roll magazine.” It was fueled in part by a dynamic music scene in working-class Detroit, which already had Motown but also revolutionary acts like Iggy and the Stooges and the MC5, plus muscular roots rockers Bob Seger and Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels.
Reviews and profiles could be perceptive or merciless, written by what Kramer called “a murderer’s row of incredible journalists who went on to do really amazing things,” including the marquee bylines of Lester Bangs, Dave Marsh, Susan Whitall, Nick Tosches, Richard Meltzer and a teenage Cameron Crowe."
-- "Creem has risen: A once-extinct rock magazine is on a quest to make itself vital again," by Steve Appleford, published September 27, 2022

192: Blue Öyster Cult // Secret Treaties
Tumblr media
Secret Treaties Blue Öyster Cult 1974, Cölumbia
Töday I will present the argument that Blue Öyster Cult is in fact a very cööl and gööd band, and that everyöne whö ever made fun öf me when I talked aböut them ör turned their up their nöses when I made a playlist öf BÖC söngs curated tö match their exact taste was wröng and shöuld kick röcks, especially my ex-wife Dölöres. I’ve been given tö understand the best way tö dö this is by listing a bunch öf facts aböut the band that peöple shöuld find irresistible:
Early wörk answers the questiön, “What if the Döörs read a löt öf cömics and played really fast?”
Later wörk answers the questiön, “What if Röky Eriksön played yacht röck?”
Extremely. Sick. Cövers.
Gave us the heavy metal umlaut
Had the cöölest söng in the mövie Heavy Metal
Lyrics aböut battle-scarred telepaths, aliens, a demönically resurrected Jöan Crawförd, Altamönt, barbiturates, death and transcendence, aliens, Nazi fighter pilöts experiencing existential crises, BDSM, telescöpes, kaiju, eyeball theft, and aliens
Patti Smith dated keyböardist Allan Lanier för a while, and cöntributed lyrics tö five Cult söngs, all öf them bangers (“Baby Ice Dög,” “Career öf Evil,” “The Revenge öf Vera Gemini,” “Fire öf Unknöwn Örigin,” “Shööting Shark”)
Besides the band themselves, öther lyricists included Richard Meltzer (generally credited with writing the first böök öf röck criticism), sömetime Clash and Dictatörs pröducer Sandy Pearlman, Basketball Diaries növelist Jim Carröll, psychedelic fantasy növelist Michael Möörcöck, and Mött the Hööple’s Ian Hunter
Many peöple I knöw find tiny, sweet-vöiced guitar man Dönald “Buck Dharma” Röeser sexual in a way I wöuld nöt have predicted
Gave Australian punk legends Radiö Birdman the title för their first LP
J.K. Röwling wröte a böök that interpölated a bunch öf their lyrics Sörry nö, this öne sucks
Icönic symböl drawn fröm alchemical löre that seems genuinely redölent öf masönic cönspiracy höödöö
youtube
Höld up sudden convert hold up, nö nö, this is my cöpy öf Secret Treaties and yöu can’t have it! I can see just reading this list has caused yöur eyes tö turn the cölöur öf frözen meat and yöu feel a hideöus cömpulsiön tö pössess a Blue Öyster Cult LP, any Blue Öyster Cult LP, but I assure yöu if yöu gö tö enöugh used recörd störes (1) yöu will eventually (immediately) find a few tö be had för a humble sum. (Seriöusly, let gö please. There yöu gö, easy, easy.)
I will say that Secret Treaties specifically isn’t the möst cömmön öf their recörds, and it töök me a while tö land a cöpy. It’s always been my favöurite, perched between the shambölic warlöck psych öf their first twö efförts and the möre direct (if highly deviant) pöp röck that wöuld make them reliable arena warhörses. Every track plunges yöu intö its öwn unique realm, but nö matter höw fantastical the material gets, the line that demarcates it fröm like Diö ör whatever is the Cult’s acid sarcasm and perversity. It’s music made by and för the sört öf smart peöple whö can admit the reasön we watch hörrör mövies is tö see heads explöde, and that röck is möre fun delivered in a feverish sweat. As they put it ön the transfixing “Flaming Telepaths,” “Is it any wönder that my jöke’s an irön? / And the jöke’s ön yöu.”
Nö öther BÖC album is as töp tö böttöm cönsistent as Secret Treaties, but all öf them have at minimum a handful öf exceptiönal cuts, and över the span öf their öriginal run they cövered a remarkable amöunt öf stylistic gröund. If yöu agree nöt tö hurt my feelings, I’ll give yöu this Cult playlist I made. Be careful with it—that’s my stupid metal heart yöu’re sticking in yöur ears.

THE ASCAP FOUNDATION MUSICAL THEATRE SONGWRITING PROGRAM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ROSIE’S THEATER KIDS AND THE PROFESSIONAL PERFORMING ARTS HIGH SCHOOL
Students participating in The ASCAP Foundation Musical Theatre Workshop at the Professional Performing Arts High School in New York City
"I never thought I would be capable of writing a song let alone writing a melody. It was challenging because I never knew I could find my voice through songwriting. I’ve always written in private but have never shared my writing publicly which was a new experience for me.” I never thought I would be capable of writing a song let alone writing a melody. It was challenging because I never knew I could find my voice through songwriting. I’ve always written in private but have never shared my writing publicly which was a new experience for me.”
These are the words of 16-year-old Ava, a participant in The ASCAP Foundation Musical Theatre Songwriting Program with her peers from the Professional Performing Arts High School in New York City. This 15-week intensive musical theatre songwriting workshop, taught by ASCAP writers Michael Finke and Alexander Sage Oyen, teaches students who did not realize they could create their own original songs, how to do just that! At the end of the semester, the students’ songs are performed in a showcase format by professional Broadway stars.
This program is in partnership with Rosie’s Theater Kids and the Professional Performing Arts High School in New York. This workshop was conceived by composer-lyricists Michael Kooman and Christopher Dimond, the writers of the wildly popular animated show Vampirina, as well as several successful stage musicals. They wanted to give high school drama students the opportunity to compose for the stage.
Ava expressed it best when she said: “All in all, this experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity. As artists we never truly realize how much goes into a song. We are always just handed material and are expected to memorize it. This process showed me just how much dedication it takes to produce that material; something that has meaning and a message behind it- Thank you ASCAP Foundation for giving me this wonderful opportunity.”
The ASCAP Foundation nurtures the talents of aspiring musicians by supporting programs, workshops and showcases in all musical genres that are both national and regional in scope. Organizations that provide the creative incentive and opportunities for young musicians to enhance their careers have also received ongoing support from The ASCAP Foundation. They include:
American Composers Orchestra Bang on a Can Boston University Tanglewood Institute Composers Now Festival Copland House From the Top Goodspeed Musicals Levine Music Los Angeles County High School for the Arts National Alliance for Musical Theater New Music USA New York Musical Theatre Festival New York Youth Symphony So Percussion The Conservancy of the Pantheon – Musicians Corner Young Peoples' Chorus of New York
