I've been having a lot of reverse!skk thoughts lately.

Setting up some context: Oda never died during the Mimic arc. Dazai still unravelled Mori's plan and now there's a huge rift between them. Dazai never trusted Mori completely, and now he barely does. Their dynamic had turned into a power play between them.

Oda's kids still died. Oda lives having survived his suicidal massacre but the weight of his loss and the blood on his hands weighs on him. He is no longer a pacifist. His dream for writing a novel is gone. Dazai has tried to help him, but he can barely help himself so he's kinda bad at it.

Ango's hanging out with the government now! No one trusts him :/

Chuuya leaves a few months after the Mimic incident. He comes across a set of documents proving Mori's involvement with the Arahabaki project as well as his personal tied with the military doctor that is Chuuya's real father. After failing to kill Mori for his betrayal, Chuuya is now a traitor. No one knows why he tried to suddenly kill the Boss, but the incident itself is whispered throughout the entirety of the Mafia. People point to Chuuya's origins in the Sheep as proof that he was a traitor all along, bidding his time.

Dazai doesn't know why. Its driving him crazy.

Chuuya thinks Dazai knew the entire time. They're a mess of zero communication.

Chuuya spends his time hiding out in different parts of the world (he's got friends in the UK so there's that!) He looks for his parents and finds them, only to leave them behind like he's done in canon. He's aware the Mafia is keeping tabs on them, but that's not the only reason why he left.

He gets a little reckless, beats up some bad guys. He doesn't know exactly what to do with his life, so he's kind of mess.

His little vigilante spree reaches Chief Taneda, who sends Ango to keep tabs on him and offer him a job. Can't have a former military experiment of infinite power running around without supervision.

Chuuya, uh, does not take the offer well (poor Ango).

Chief Taneda finally confronts him in person, says if he wants a job Taneda knows a guy who is not affiliated with the government and whom Chuuya might like (received almost as badly, but Chuuya considers it).

While Chuuya's mulling over this weird offer, he runs into a human trafficking organization that was in conflict with the Sheep back in the day. He's got an excuse to beat up more bad guys. Guess who he ends up running into (yes it's the Agency).

More specifically, it's Ranpo! They squabble, they team up, the works. Ranpo is like "Do you want a job" and Chuuya is like "That's sus but I'll think about it" (he does in fact want it)

Chuuya ends up meeting the other Agency members before he agrees (Ranpo 100% has nothing to do with that. Totally.) He likes them. He thinks they're all insane. He misses having people around who aren't there to double cross him. He takes the job.

Enterance Exam! I'm so sorry Kunikida.

Chuuya avoids the PM like the plague.

And then he meets Atsushi.

Give me reversed skk. Give me Mori finding a young Chuuya, freshly escaped from the lab, and training him to be a ruthless mafioso and a perfect successor. Give me Dazai escaping whatever life he lived before and turning to other children on the streets, finding purpose in protecting his newfound brothers and sisters. Give me Dazai who gets betrayed by the Sheep, by his only reason for living, and falling into the ‘comically sad’ state that we canonicallly know him for. Give me Soukoku who still find a partnership together, but with a completely different dynamic due to their switched pasts.

Give me reversed Kousano. Give me Mori finding a young Kouyou and using Golden Demon on the front lines of The Great War. What’s a powerful army in the face of an ability warrior that cannot fall? Give me Kouyou getting picked up by the agency, who recognize her thirst for the light. Give me Kouyou unsure that her ability can be used for anything but death, only for Ranpo and Fukuzawa to reassure her that her heart is all that matters. Give me Yosano getting recruited by the mafia later on, but with an ability still barely used. Give me Yosano only knowing how to use her ability for the mafia, and by the time she wants out, it’s already too late. Give me Yosano trying her best to train Kyouka, while also knowing the she will never be able to make it to the light. Give me Kouyou welcoming Kyouka into the agency with open arms, showing her that she isn’t alone.

About reverse skk au, I just had a thought

So, normally apprentices get some characteristics from their mentors, even subconsciously, what if Atsushi gets Chuuya's "goes apeshit when he hears Dazai's name", but it's Akutagawa's instead?

It's like, this nice little boy who is a sweet bean and just helped this old lady to cross the road, then he hears "Port Mafia's Black hound is close" and he starts growing like a feral racoon ready to throw hands

(basically Atsushi's normal cannon behaviour with Akutagawa, just more feral)

OH ABSOLUTELY LMAOO it’s just that chuuya made sure his feral-ness was a learned behavior (atsushi’s working on it but he’s getting there)

Favourite things in skk fics

I think i talked a lot about things i dont like in fics so let me do a quick one where i talk about the things i love.

I love the one where dazai is in pm and whenever he is mad at chuuya/gets jealous he lets himself get kidnapped and chuuya has to rescue him. it's so funny but also like so port mafia skk it makes sense

role reversal aus where chuuya is in the ada and dazai is in pm

ik we know canonically how skk and we know what happens with chuuya afterwards too due to stormbringer but i love the older fics where they meet as children and they're both raised under mori and kouyou and hate each other when they meet but theyre childhood bffs.

the sort of domestic fics after everything when they're together but it's not like overly sweet. it has the slight melancholy and sadness that is so skk. one where they're trying to learn each other again bc even though they know each other better than anyone, they have still changed.

famous skk lol. i blame still still still for this but i have a softness for aus where they're both famous and sort of rivals and they still fall in love.

dazai being the one to fall first and harder but chuuya being the one to realize it first.

There's probably more which i cant think of now but yeah.

How do you think Dazai took Chuuya's "betrayal", and how did the agency accept Chuuya?

I would tell you exactly how Dazai took the betrayal, but it would be a spoiler for the fic. All I will say is that Swapped Dazai is very unstable in a way canon (or even beast) Dazai isn't. He doesn't have a goal to follow. Not Oda's last words or the desperate attempt to make Oda an author. He's untethered.

As for how the Ada accepted Chuuya? They know he was high ranked in the mafia (maybe not his executive status), but they are aware of his background. He doesn't hide it, but he doesn't go around talking about it either. He's also still very rich, and (opposite of Dazai) is very frugal with his money. Takes the Agency out to eat and stuff, buys everyone expensive gifts. It was a rocky start but it didn't take long for the Ada to fully accept him.

(And the choker? That came to me basically in a vision. It stims from the mafia attitude behind clothing, and from a personal headcanon of what I think 30 year old married skk would look like.)

Reverse SKK AUs are so funny because we have this scary, edgy Mafia Executive who seems to be one step ahead of anyone who tries to get in his way and then one time you see your "mysterious" co-worker yelling at him and calling him a "bastard" without blinking and you just want to live and have your agency survive and not get nuked by the PM and suddenly the big scary Mafia guy devolves into a five-year-old child and starts yelling playground insults back at him.

I like to call this one the reverse soulmates AU, and ch. 114 relevant spoilers under the read more!!

so now with knowing that Fyodor is so damn old, I came up with this reverse soulmates AU, where every one of Fyodor's previous soulmates died because, y'know, he OUTLIVES ALL OF THEM. I haven't decided whether or not to incorporate his ability into the AU, since usually soulmates AUs, if one of them dies or they break up, then they both die. But uh, YEAH. I feel like it has some good angst potential on Fyodor's side since he keeps getting matched with 'the one' but they end up dying, so he starts having commitment issues and is concerned about investing too much of himself into his partner.

Dazai comes barreling in

Dazai's likely going to have the same unfortunate fate as all of Fyodor's previous soulmates, and Dazai's like 'oh, oh no, this guy', but he makes the best of it. He actually kinda pities Fyodor's immortality? Like Fyodor has seen so much death and they're all deaths of, technically, his loved ones. There's no way that doesn't do a number on Fyodor after so many years. So Dazai is there being his Dazai self and trying to keep Fyodor's mind from wandering to that dark place about mortality and immortality, and just to live in the moment while they're together

I need to know what you think of this half-baked concept, and by “half-baked” I mean “barely even baked, not even really baked at all, completely raw” as in “I literally was just struck with this idea two minutes ago and have not ruminated on it for long at all” and it is: SSKK and SKK role reversal AU, where Atsushi and Akutagawa are the divorced never married weirdos and Dazai and Chuuya are the just met but very weird about each other weirdos. I have absolutely nothing else figured out about this AU and probably never will

oh my god i love that actually. absolute bonus points if everyone is still their canon ages, but circumstances change to accommodate the new dynamic rather than the inverse; atsushi & akutagawa have known each other since they were kids and akutagawa would sneak into the orphanage and steal food, that atsushi always got blamed for, and he hated him, but akutagawa would, in turn, help him out of whatever punishment he had with a baby, barely used rashoumon. when akutagawa disappears, atsushi mourns his loss because that was his only friend and they once, sitting inside an old well that atsushi had chosen to hide in, decided they would get married when they were older because married people get to make life decisions for the other and it was the only sense of autonomy either of them had as kids.

dazai never inducts chuuya into the mafia; the flags don't die because verlaine never has to target them. chuuya becomes the prince of assassins because of a deal he made with verlaine about the lives of the sheep when verlaine came after him.

dazai still lives & leaves the mafia because of oda, but he never has chuuya's light to keep him occupied and thus his friendship with oda & ango is far more intense and it hits him far differently.

when atsushi & akutagawa re-meet, they meet as enemies, but they interact like old friends; akutagawa cuts off atsushi's leg and atsushi retorts with a memory from when they were kids. akutagawa goes to attack atsushi & atsushi successfully distracts him by reminding him of the vow they made.

dazai meets chuuya when the agency gets a case about a high-profile assassination within the government; someone a little too close to ango for dazai's comfort, and thus begins the troubling tale of dazai trying to hunt chuuya down and deal with him. it's not hunting him down that's the issue; it's capturing him, because chuuya harnesses the power of a god - a singularity - and dazai has never had to deal with someone like that at this point. so yes, he is kind of fucking obsessed with chuuya.

“College AU where Chuuya finds out that the boy he drunkenly made out with the night of orientation is his new roommate. His arrogant, smug, very straight roommate. And the boys are each convinced the other is trying to ruin their life by making them go absolutely insane.”

i think the most kudosed skk fic on ao3 so not very. underground indie. JDHSJ the writing style isn’t my favourite but the plot is really good and the characterisation. oh my ever loving fuck THE CHARACTERISATION!!! strong nsfw that i’m like 99% sure is quite crucial to the plot though so i’d maybe skip this if ur not comfortable with that!! (the first 6 ish chapters should be mainly fine though for that if ur just wanting smn small and funny)

2. waiting room by srxlee - sskk

“In which the smell of antiseptic becomes familiar, and the feeling doesn't hurt like it used to, yet it aches. Where Ryuunosuke battles his habit of loving that which is fleeting. And now his hand, calloused and bruised, just can’t seem to let go.”

HEKANDHWKS i would die for this fic. it’s absolutely amazingly written like genuinely there are like 6 chapters where my mouth was agape the whole time purely bc of the writing style. the plot is really interesting, and the author deals with illness very very well. it DOES have a happy ending im so proud to announce and it’s overall very very sweet and i love it please read it i beg KDHSJ

3. learn to love by thebackwardsstep - skk

“Dazai pissed in a stranger's car- because screw the bourgeoisie- and now he has a sugar daddy. What the fuck.”

i physically could not tell u a thing about this fic, i read it when i was suffering with the flu BUT from what i do remember it was surprisingly sweet and the main ending conflict is resolved by a bird so JDHAKSH also also also in spite of its name it only has like 2 nsfw scenes in it which are VERY easily skippable and also a scene where dazai dresses up as a girl and they go to a ball :D

4. debatable society by chlovrs - sskk

“Atsushi has always struggled with self-confidence so to boost him up, his friend Dazai convinces him to join their University debate society. It works for a little bit, he makes some friends and is actually able to like, ya know...join in on conversations without shaking like a leaf. But then they start competing with the students from their neighboring University and of course, Akutagawa, the one who is beauty incarnated just loves to fucking argue.”

THIS IS SO CUTE. it’s been a while since i’ve read it but from what i can remember the plot is rlly cute, and sskk’s dynamic is really sweet. the author is also the absolute sweetest person ever and i highly highly recommend leaving a comment or two bc they’re genuinely soso sweet and Will respond KDHAKSH (there IS one nsfw scene but again, very easy to skip and doesn’t affect the plot by any means)

5. thé art of precious scars by run_mello - skk

“Role reversal AU where Dazai is in the Port Mafia and Chuuya is in the Armed Detective Agency.

holy ever loving FUCK THIS FIC IS AMAZING. i remember the first thought i had while reading it was “this authors read the irl authors books.” LIKE IT SHOWS SO MCUHF WJDKDH i think my favourite example of this was in i think the first or second chapter when dazai plays the synonym/antonym game from no longer human it’s genuinely really really sick. as well as that the author will occasionally sprinkle in quotes from books and poems and it’s just. very very very cool. the characterisation is phenomenal its so well written very highly recommend !!!

6. chuuya is red hot and dazai is so not by icedlightroast - skk

“Dazai couldn't wrap his brain around it. How could the student population think that Chuuya Nakahara was more attractive than him? And, alright, sure, maybe professors shouldn't get caught up in petty drama. But to Dazai, this wasn't just drama. This was war. A war in which he was not going to lose.”

this made me giggle an abnormal amount. KDHAJS this fic had me kicking my feet back and forth and twirling my hair oml it’s soso cute VERY short but very very cute

What about Verlaine and Chuuya? Does the hikikomori shows up sometimes at the Agency as Chuuya's mysterious older brother that gives them a lot of money (not as a sponsor, but giving it as a tip) that is totally doing legal jobs to get the money because the payment in the Agency is lower than the PM and he's like "my younger brother will not work for ¥139,539 a year")

helloooo!! i love the idea of kenji being chuuya’s first apprentice :,)) i think that chuuya would definitely be intimidated by this kid’s sheer strength but worry so much for his well-being that he’d have to dangle him in the air with his ability just to keep him out of trouble

i would LOVE to include verlaine into the au more but I’m not well versed in his lore so i’m gonna trust u and say that’s def canon in this au. i just imagine the ada getting small jobs like catching a cheater and being tipped a huge sum anonymously. chuuya has to have an angry call home every time about not sticking his nose into his workplace.

bitch: something about the lyrics "i'm your bitch, you're my bitch, boom boom" really resonates with skk in general.

golden light: reversezaicore. idk how to explain it, Moody but relaxing. reversezai isn't quite as *crazy* as canonzai.

i hate the world and everyone in it: really moody emo edgy song that appeared in my spotify mix (when i sadly didn't have access to the premium acct) think of this as the background track for an analog au scene, where chuuya, tsujimura, ayatsuji and the special division are on the hunt for verlaine. incidentally it's chuuya's debut scene. analog au is really cinematic in my mind I JUST GOTTA DRAW IT ghhh

sit next to me: reverse chuuya. He's got this energetic supportive big brother vibe alll the time. yes! sit next to chuuya! he'll put an arm around your shoulder!

chuuya not suffering -> well he has a terrible time in reverse au but at least he has an (alive) found family! And him and dazai are DEFINITELY DATING i've decided. they have an actual meet cute romance arc instead of fifteen. (sorry though daz you need to go through a little bit of self-imposed misery). actually reverse chuuya is like if you got regular chuuya but his energy, general smiliness, and big brother levels skyrocked out of his body.

barely any females focus -> reverse au isn't really FULL reverse au (where the mafia and ada fully switch) and is SORTA a reverse SKK au (bc dazai starts in the ada and leaves to the mafia, and chuuya stays with the ada from the 'start'). It's really reverse FUKUMORI au and all the characters are shuffled around accordingly. Kouyou and Hirotsu are in the mafia because that's where they were b4 the change in leadership, Tachihara's with the mafia bc he's a spy for the hunting dogs - he's part of a completely separate equation. Yosano stays with Mori bc Mori is a good person, Ranpo and Fukuzawa are disillusioned and take over the criminal underworld together. etc etc. WHAT i meant to say was, reverse ADA ladies lineup is Yosano, Kyouka, Higuchi, Gin (who is more of a clerk), which balances out the guys a little more, Mori, Chuuya, Akutagawa, Kenji. (dazai and oda's spirit dancing in the bg, nearly out of frame). AND Higuchi's the lead ideally if i wasn't stuck making 15 skk doodles.

Gaiden duo! -> They play the leads in the analog b-side. Chuuya + Rimlaine are the big focus but most of the story is told with Tsujimura and Ayatsuji. They'd really work as a good story leads (especially if they were depowerd, they'd be a really buddy cop duo)
