The Sign finale probably should have disappointed me, but... didn't?

It's been a heck of a run lately with Thai BLs that haven't quite stuck the landing, and it's got me pondering why The Sign worked for me despite sometimes feeling like a storyboard for a longer, better show.

I don't think they pulled off the emotional payoff they needed, despite that last reunion scene being so pretty and well-acted, simply because too much happened offscreen, from Khem's recovery from a gunshot wound to the entire multlifetime Tharn/Chalothon dynamic getting resolved without us seeing any of it. But somehow I wasn't that mad about it? And ultimately I think it's because this show did so many things well and so many things I'd love to see more of that I'm just like, yep, I enjoyed that ride sirs, please show me something this gorgeous again. In that sense it's joining something like Manner of Death or Kinnporsche where it's like, plot holes? Yes. Bizarre tonal shifts? Absolutely. Occasionally insane writing choices? Uh-huh. Love it anyway? You betcha. So here's what really, really worked for me:

Premise

I am always going to be onboard with QL that isn't solely coming-of-age or coming out. I'm not against those stories, of course, but give me gay romance with adult characters who know themselves and are doing adult things. I'm also a partisan for romances with high external stakes, so the mixture of crime and reincarnation was catnip to me.

Do I care that none of this training makes any sense? No.

2. Setting

Listen. Is The Sign the reason I have a document on my laptop titled "Imaginary trip to Thailand without ever seeing a beach?" Not exactly. But it's also not not the reason.

I am being willingly manipulated by the Thai Tourism Authority.

Kidding, kidding, but I do love when my Thai shows feel Thai or my Korean shows feel Korean, etc etc. I want to be driven to Wikipedia to learn more! Half the fun of watching stuff from not your own country.

3. Chemistry

I think @biochemjess covered what was underwritten about the romance in The Sign. Billy and Babe carried it on their backs and it was hard to dislike their romance, even when the series skipped over key beats.

Any time the pink lighting came out, you were gonna be in for a good time.

4. The camerawork

I don't know enough about film to speak intelligently about this, but the camerawork and aesthetics of this show were just so lovely to watch. It was really doing a lot. @chaos0pikachu wrote about it better than I ever could.

LOVED THIS. LOVED IT. So good.

We had some really lovely storytelling and visual parallels, too, like the first episode and finale both having a big action warehouse scene, or the multiple times that Phaya and Tharn ended up overlooking the Mekong river.

5. It was always kinda off the rails

I know some people felt this show started out with a strong premise and didn't live up to it, but I gotta say, I didn't have that experience. It was always kinda a bonkers watch for me. There were long training montages, random bodies in the shallows, missing genitals, extended performance art, that comedy flashback to Khem and Thongthai's college years... I never knew what I was going to get each Saturday. And I kind of loved that? I'm into unhinged. I was comparing this in my head to Last Twilight, which did disappoint me in the end, and I think it's because Last Twilight was NOT always bonkers and DID set itself up to tell a straighforward story, then dropped the ideas it had been juggling in the last episode. The Sign always felt chaotic to me, so a chaotic ending was par for the course. This is where I'd compare it to KinnPorsche, which had the weirdest fucking ending, but like, okay??? Why not!

End result? I see the flaws, but I'm giving this show tender forehead kisses anyway. Here's hoping for more like it.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force #91: “Eggball” | February 22, 2010 - 12:00AM | S08E04

Shake is playing his Master Shake pinball table, which sorta resembles what a real-world Aqua Teen Hunger Force pinball machine might look like. Shake’s pinball table was custom made, and autobiographical, featuring many references from the cup’s eventful life.

Meatwad mistakenly cooks the eggs inside the machine; it is explained that the pinballs inside are not actually pinballs, but eggs from a rare flightless bird that live on a remote island. The Aqua Teens must go to retrieve more eggs/pinballs so Shake can continue having a fun time. Things don’t go well, with Shake getting zapped by a big gay baby (his words, not mine), and also put through a large stone torture chamber that resembles a pinball machine run by the birds. The episode ends with about 90 seconds of the birds arguing about their tourism website they’d set up for the island.

This one is pretty fun, but like most episodes of the show is strong at the outset and then sorta peters out (speaking of Peters, Shake’s rationale for having his own pinball machine is that “the Family Guy has one, so why not me?”). It fares as a pretty average episode of the show, which isn’t too bad of a thing. My only quibble is why Frylock and Meatwad would agree to go with Shake to the island just for his stupid quest, but that sorta hearkens back to the old episodes where Shake's leadership is not questioned.

The episode has laughs, and it has George Lowe, who not only plays himself as a pinball machine repair guy, but also one of the birds. He does a crazy voice for that guy, and I couldn’t put my finger on who it was at first, but once I heard it, I couldn’t unhear it. I think the other bird might b C. Martin Croker, but I’m only basing that on the fact that his name is in the credits. Eat a Peach reunion?

Taehyung said he has a plan. WE know through his choices, videos and words that he is trying to open people's minds. I think he will come out a bit AFTER his military service, 2025 reunion and contracts with Compose and Soul Tourism or any other company contract he has are finished. That way those who don't fully embrace LGBTQ rights won't cause any real time backlash towards these entities for his choice to come out. We know he picks companies to work with who he respects, so part of me wonders if Compose, Sim etc are allies. Pretty sure Cartier is and Celine is a given.

Of course one must consider his partner's wishes as well. If we beleive it to be Jungkook I am not so confident "coming out" will be anytime in the near future, however this plan is still good if they were to get exposed.

Yeah it does feel like he's laying a path, doesn't it? Almost introducing the idea slowly.

It's a really good point about what his partner wants.

In an ideal world, I do believe that coming out as queer is an individual journey and how and when you do that should only ever be when its good for you and nobody else.

Coming out as being in a queer relationship is different. That's when you have to start ensuring you're on same page as your partner because it directly implicates them.

Open queerness doesn't prove a relationship exists. It only proves a relationship could exist.

But this is a bit of a different world to the world I came out in, for example. Nobody was interested in who my partner was. The stakes were so low. I feel like eyes would turn immediately to who he interacts with and, regardless of the ideal world, implications would be made. That's why it feels unlikely to me.

But Tae is super smart and business savvy. So everything you've said rings true

Caught an aloalo reference from afar. I was amazed to find a memorial for the marons in front of the tourism office, with the malagasy roots explicitly representated (aloalo are funeral sculptures from the Mahafaly region). Major maronaz sites have yet to be given memorials; the few that’ve been installed seem to come with a QR code leading to a tantara (gasy tale/legend) in a podcast form. Sat under a tree, listened to it as birds were flying around the parc, the tantara being Zoizo la liberté (Freedom bird). Cannot describe how proud I felt.

Dimitile is where we celebrate Atidamba (honoring marons and afro/malagasy ancestors) This year’s the 360th anniversary of Reunion Island peopling. In 1663, 10 malagasy and 2 frenchs arrived from Fort-Dauphin MDG. The frenchs quickly left leaving the malagasy on the island. 1 of them is my direct ancestor, as many Creoles. They became the first marons. Basically this island is malagasy fr

Even though Lemony Snicket thought that the Haines Family, mainly Lizzle and Kellar, would take permanent residency in Stain’d-by-the-Sea and help restore the city to its former glory, the two siblings left, though at different times. Granted, the times each sibling left, the city was slowly rising from out of its non-watery grave, which each rising being better than the last.

Lizzie was eighteen when beginning her training and studying under Dame Sally Murphy, and nineteen when she got kidnapped. After the Haines Family reunion, the four (Sally Murphy forced herself in as honorary family) decided to stay in Stain’d-by-the-Sea, due to Lizzie and Kellar’s insistence, with Lizzie wanting to stay because of Kellar. Lizzie continues her education for another three years. Sally Murphy eventually got the Stain’d Playhouse to be reopen for one week only, with the now twenty-two-year-old Lizzie as the main actress and star of the performance.

At this point, Stain’d-by the Sea had some businesses getting a second wind, for the events of The Thistle of the Valley brought outside tourism; many people wanted to knowwhat lead up to the literal train-wreck. The weeks before the one-week reopening bought in many professionals -actors and actresses, set designers, theatrical technician, lighting technician, and others- coming into the city, as well as tourists who wanted to see one of the survivors of the incident preform. After the one week was up, several of those professionals, decided to stay, transforming the former playhouse into a proper school, which excited Sally Murphy.

Lizzie left the city on high hopes, which prove fruitful, for she has a successful acting career on the theater stage, television screen, and movie screen. Lizzie by the (post) ASOUE period, lives in the City and went back to her specialty of theater acting, with her adopted fraternal twins, Farley (boy) and Granger (girl). She makes the occasional visit to the Stain’d-by-the-Sea to be a guest teacher at the school, and to see her mother and stepfather. While Lizzie’s relationship with her mother healed, it isn’t as strong as before. But Lizzie, especially now being a parent, understands her mother’s actions were at heart, for good intentions (and understanding doesn’t equal to accepting her mother’s actions).

How about if tourism was stripped of its commodity logic?

In the capitalist world, tourism is a commodity, a consumer good to escape life's worries, a getaway from the everyday mundane wage-earning reality, and a highlight of a few weeks of annual leave. Once packaged as a commodity, we also demand that it delivers what the wrapping promises. “A worry-free time with good food, sun, and easy access to a few Instagrammable destinations to share with friends and family.”

But there is a deeper meaning for travel beyond what a holiday package can offer. This deeper meaning is rarely met if the starting point is to define tourism as a commodity. If the travel were a pilgrimage, a lifelong learning journey focused on exploration and making new connections, it would start to resemble a different animal altogether.

If the purpose of the travel would be an inner practice of meeting and experiencing culture, environment, and people, it would mean staying on the often-uncomfortable edge, experiencing something different from your familiar surroundings. Travel - a pilgrimage into your life on the planet earth shared with others.

And as a pilgrim, you would not be looking for luxury and comfort because you did not travel there to consume what “they” or the place can offer, searching for the cheapest and most authentic experience from an online app. Instead, you would be there to learn about yourself, reflect on your reactions when meeting the new, and practicing seeing “them” as equals with mutual wonder and reciprocity.

The world of uncommodified tourism is not a one-way street where only you can go and take what is available; it is open to travel in both directions. In this world, you are equally aware that “they”, however different and a little nerving, may come to see you at your home, even at an unexpected time, when you welcome them with open arms and prepare a feast of reunion.
