The full fic here:
He couldn’t breathe. He felt like there was a weight on his chest and he couldn’t breathe. He managed to take three steps until the bottom of the stairs where he collapsed. Everything seemed to be turning around him, he felt dizzy. He felt his palms sweating. He felt like he was free falling. All until he felt a hand on his shoulder. And someone lightly shaking him. The he could finally register a voice and he looked up into to the worried face of his younger brother.
‘Are you okay, Stan? You look pretty pale. Should I call someone?’ Renly asked him
‘No, no it’s fine.’ Stannis croaked but couldn’t quite believe himself ‘My wife just left me and our three kids but everything is fine-’ he paused. Tears were starting to fall down his cheek. He hadn’t cried in years, he felt disgusted. Then he felt bad for feeling disgusted at himself. And then the flood works began. He just sat there sobbing for minutes all while Renly stood there frozen, like a deer in headlights. All of sudden he heard the telltale sign of naked feet patting on the floorboards.
‘Daddy?’ he turned his head to see his eldest son standing at the top of the stairs. Little Edric in his Spider-Man Pajamas and with his black curls mussed from sleeping on it, blue eyes wide with worry. He looked so much like Renly in this moment. Renly who too had lost his mother at age five. Stannis tried to collect himself before rushing up the stairs to his son. He knelt before him and looked at him, tears still in his eyes.
‘Daddy you’re sad.’ Edric said
‘Yes, Eddie, I’m sad.’
‘Is it because Mummy went away?’ his son looked at him curiously
‘Yes, it is because Mummy went away.’
‘Will she come back?’
‘I don’t know, sweetheart, I don’t know.’ at that he started crying again
‘Don’t cry Daddy.’ Edric said throwing himself in his father’s arms and Stannis hugged him back and they just sat there at the top of the stairs for a while, hugging each other
‘Stannis?’ Renly asked from the back
‘Yeah?’ he looked up at his brother
‘Are you going to be alright for tonight or should I call someone?’
‘No, it’s going to be fine. I’ll call Davos tomorrow. Oh and Renly?’
‘Yeah?'
'If you could not tell Robert what happened tonight, at least for now?’
‘Of course.’ Renly nodded understandingly
‘Thank you Ren, you’re a good lad. You know that, right?.’
His brother nodded absently ‘Thank you Stan.’ Renly said, before leaving to his room at the end of the landing.
Stannis turned back to his son who was still clinging onto him
‘Alright Eddie, let’s go back to bed, hm?’ He asked and his son let go off him and let himself be led back to his room and tucked back into his bed. Stannis leant down and kissed Edric’s forehead before he went and turned off the big light and shut the door.
He went to his own bedroom, undressed, turned of the light and got into bed. He tossed and turned before he finally fell asleep around 3am.
He woke up at 7 to loud cries. He rolled out of bed and walked into the nursery where his youngest child was currently screaming his lungs out. Stannis could not fault him for that, if his mother left him at 10 months old, he would have probably cried his lungs out as well.
‘Hello Steffon, what’s wrong, huh? How can Daddy help you?’ the crying thankfully stopped and instead he was met by huge blue eyes staring up at him. He picked Steffon up and rocked him on his hip.
‘Are you hungry? Should we go and see what your brother and sister are up to? Yes? Okay let’s go.’ He walked down the stairs and into the kitchen, where Edric, Shireen and Renly were all sat at the kitchen table eating cereal and watching a cartoon on Renly’s laptop, Renly was also in the middle of fixing Shireen’s hair into two pigtails
‘Morning.’ Stannis said while walking towards the fridge to get one of the prepared bottles that were in there
‘Daddy!’ Shireen hopped down from her chair, ran over to him and hugged his legs. Stannis used his one free hand to stroke his daughter’s head.
‘Morning sweetheart, sleep well?’ he asked
‘Yes, daddy. Uncle Renly did my hair, look!’ she did a little twirl
‘Looks really good, princess. Did you say thank you to Uncle Renly?’
‘Uh huh.’ Shireen nodded
‘Good.’ Stannis said. He took the bottle he took from the fridge and went to heat it up.
‘Renly?’
‘Yeah?’
‘Could you give Steffon his bottle while I go and dress?’
‘Yeah, sure.’ he handed Steffon and the heated bottle over to Renly and went upstairs to dress. When he came down again, Renly had made him breakfast, a bowl of yoghurt with granola and fruit, as well as a cup of coffee. Renly went upstairs with the other kids and got everyone ready to leave while Stannis ate his breakfast and texted Davos about having lunch together. He then got all the kids in the car and dropped everyone off at school and Steffon at the nursery he started going to a month ago. The last one to be dropped off was Renly and as his brother was exiting the car Stannis turned to him
‘Thank you for this morning, Renly, that was very nice of you.’
‘It’s nothing Stan, but you’re welcome.’
‘Have a great day.’
‘Thanks, you too.’

I have questions about hunting on the Westeros shows. On Robert's fatal hunt, it seems normal, hunting with his brother, squire & bodyguard, but Renly, who is more a Good Guy on the show, is grossed out. And Robert dies, so maybe he should have had help? But Viserys hunting is OTT, more like a tent party in the woods, then they ride out to where hunters are holding a deer with ropes so it can't run, Viserys dismounts & is handed a fancy spear and he pokes the deer until it dies & everyone claps
Hunt ask2. The hunt on HotD is ridiculous and decadent, and they bring (& consume) more food than they catch and no one but Viserys seems to feel it. I can see why hunting is a thing in medieval society, and the king symbolically providing meat, and people enjoy it, but how what does he prove when he is barely involved, how is it fun unless you're sadist, which he isn't? Is it just making people clap at your bullshit? Is the show just taking dramatic license & hunts were more like Roberts?
Hunting3 But then if Robert is the real deal, why does his hunt get him killed (aside from because otherwise the series would be a book & a half long and the last few chapters would be people saying "hey, remember the Lannisters" while assembling a massive army to crush the Others) and Renly is so disapproving? It is his carelessness or his indulging his most base nature that is being critiqued? Or is GRRM just anti hunting?
I don't think GRRM is simply anti-hunting. Obligatory caveat that I don't watch House of the Dragon.
Medieval hunting did have ritual purposes - plenty of medieval hunters considered the hunt par force to be the purest form of the hunt, where each member of the group had their own purpose. The Duke of Orleans specifically was against using bows or traps, and considered the pursuit of the quarry on horseback with hounds to be the point. In that case, the hart would be pursued until it could no longer flee, then the most prominent man would take up the kill, usually with sword or spear. Another type of hunt might be driving herds toward archers, for multiple kills. Yet another type of hunting might be advancing slowly on horseback to close range to kill the deer with a well-placed arrow shot, a stalking type of hunting.
Boar hunting was much the same as the hart hunt par force, driving the boar and then bringing it to bay, then slay it dismounted. There were specialized boar spears, like the rogatina that were used to slay boar, and this was considered to be a highly dangerous form of hunting.
So in Robert's case, Robert was showing off his strength and skill in the traditional noble pasttime, and a combination of drink, age, and his own precipitous physical decline meant that the boar got a piece of him, which did happen on occasion. As Robert was the most prominent man present in the hunt, he could demand the killing blow.
Whereas with Viserys, this looked to be a decadent indulgence of Viserys in an attempt to prove his masculinity and strength in the Westerosi context. The books characterize Viserys as lazy at almost all times, so this would be him exerting little effort while the people assembled clap to feed his vanity.
Thanks for the question, Anon.

House Lannister or House Baratheon?
hi, love! ❤️
I don't mind House Lannister and I think they're badass, however I've always been identifying myself with House Baratheon (which is quite unpopular I think 🥲) for several reasons:
• Their looks. Now, I don't have blue eyes, mine are brown/hazel but in GoT it didn't matter much anyway (Renly and Shireen have brown eyes) + the only house known for dark hair and eyes is House Martell (I think ?) but they are POC-coded and I'm white. It's just... Brown eyes need more representation, dammit 😔 + it would make more sense if Baratheons had dark eyes like does/deers 😇
• Their Aries energy and I'm an Aries
• Their badass motto that I love since I have anger issues lolz
• THE ENERGY. ROBERT STARTING A REBELLION AND KILLING RHAEGAR??? COME ON THAT'S SO BADASS!!!
• I love color yellow 💛
• Deers / stags are one of my favorite animals

ablessedharvest:
The letter she received contained a novel and strange request. Ravens -- a white raven -- that sent anything but immediate matters related to the War of Five Kings fell into Margaery’s lap. She didn’t wish to burden Renly with anything else, and while his council could handle these minor troubles, she still enjoyed being part. Renly was a very busy king, and the kingdom liked him for his kindness and humour. Besides playing letter-keeper there wasn’t much to occupy a queen’s time. The knock drew her away from her thoughts, and one of her guardsmen opened it. On the other side stood a group of men, both young and old, and all together water-weary. Water dampened their brown cowl, spattered with sea spray from the waves. Unskilled in geography she was unsure the distance they must have covered to reach Westeros, but their weather worn faces spoke of a great many miles. They were travellers here, she understood from their letter, to speak some interesting news. Their party to greet these pilgrims was small with Margaery, and four knights. Hardly a proper welcoming, but it would do. The knight at the door heralded her name and titles for the newcomers, and the smile she offered them was nothing less than inviting.
Tumblr media
“Greetings to you, good sers. My name is Margaery. I understand you have traveled from far lands. We’ve accommodated rooms, and Ser Parmon Crane would gladly show those who seek immediate rest.” She gestured toward the man in purple armor. A proud knight of Renly’s Rainbow Guard turned escort for the group of religious men. “If any of you wish to speak immediately it would bring me great joy to hear your councils.”
Athelstan had expected there to be a larger welcoming party, with more royals and knights there to greet him and his fellow monks, for this great event of revelation. Nonetheless, it was a warm welcome bestowed by who seemed like the Queen of this castle.
He construed it must be, from the way she spoke and held herself. He took off the hood that was covering his head, and put it behind him onto his back.
“And good greetings to you, Your Grace. We thank you for your generosity." He and the others said in unison and bowed low, the shaved part of their heads evident to see, as they did so. It was called a tonsure, a practice in the monastery to cut their hair to feel the nature of god's presence from the earthy dome of their skull. Then, they stepped inside one by one, as it seemed an appropriate indication to do so. He nodded to the purple knight called Ser Crane.
And now, Athelstan spoke alone, to address the Queen.
"I do not tire much as of yet, but some of my Brothers are quite spent from the long travel we undertook.”
“My Brothers and I have come to spread the Word of God, all in good will. We would like to speak of it to you, your ladies and men, with your blessing.”
Margaery nods, and says he could talk the Word of God.
He had no knowledge on what the other gods, the people in Storm’s End worshipped, yet he wished to be polite, as they could worship something else.
Tumblr media
He walked with the others to a council room, where he read passage, as they sat. He saw banners of yellow of a black deer emblazoned, a colourful star, yet no...indication of Jesus Christ...?
He is quite nervous, speaking quietly, as he looks down at his bible, yet tries to look up to see his audience.
'your kingdom is beautiful, and likens to the garden of eden, good sers and missus. genesis speaks of the beauty and calm of this garden, which your castle reminds us of. it is a garden in heaven which is cultivated by joshua. '
margaery is interested, as she liked this castle too, missing highgarden more than anything, her homeland, yet this was nice as well, a bit confining because of it shrouded in salt and smoke -- she saddened in thought. she was married to renly now though, yet could still visit her home when she wished.

ㅤrenly had grown STRONGER in the months following the siege. a steady diet of deer meat & bread had done more than just spring the youngest baratheon up nearly half a foot - stannis found himself genuinely being pulled along by the brother he used to carry to bed almost a year prior.
Tumblr media
ㅤbut being so near the banquet table turned his stomach - & not because it was surrounded by drunken lords and serving girls. stannis eyed the stuffed pig in the center of the table, half-listening to renly as the younger prattled on how robert had slain it one-handed. stannis muttered something about over-exaggerations, though it probably wasn't.
ㅤwere the effects of the rebellion truly forgotten so quickly ?
ㅤcountless feasts & parties followed after robert's coronation, each seeming more EXTRAVAGANT than the last. he would hear some talk of the war here and there - though, only in glorious war tales or spitting at the name of their old mad king.
ㅤwith the way stannis was nearly toppled over when a larger man accidentally bumped into his shoulder, he had a harder time forgetting.
ㅤhis slight build didn't hinder his speed, thankfully. stannis admittedly felt a touch of RELIEF as he left the banquet table behind. no doubt renly would find a better conversation partner & scarcely notice stannis' absence. the smell of roasted pork threatened to bring up the fruit he'd eaten for lunch - it reminded the stormlord too terribly much of the dogs & rats...
ㅤa lady dressed in gray had appeared out of nowhere. if stannis had weighed any more, he likely would've knocked her down.
ㅤ" apologies, lady stark, " he says in a tight voice. the stark colors and red tully hair identified her for him. that, & robert was very descriptive when he spoke of ned stark's wife. his gaze flickered down at the thought.

I’m kind of man that Jon just ditches Ghost for Rheagal. What happened to mans best friend?
Maggy said it herself: “Oh yes, you’ll be man’s best friend. For a time. Then comes another, younger, more beautiful, to cast you down and take all you hold dear.“

"A wolf with a fish in its mouth?" It made her laugh. "That would look silly. Besides, if a girl can't fight, why should she have a coat of arms?" (Arya I, AGoT)
--
Beside the entrance, the king's armor stood sentry; a suit of forest-green plate, its fittings chased with gold, the helm crowned by a great rack of golden antlers. The steel was polished to such a high sheen that she could see her reflection in the breastplate, gazing back at her as if from the bottom of a deep green pond. The face of a drowned woman, Catelyn thought. Can you drown in grief? She turned away sharply, angry with her own frailty. She had no time for the luxury of self-pity. She must wash the dust from her hair and change into a gown more fitting for a king's feast. (Catelyn II, ACoK)
--
That night she went to sleep thinking of her mother, and wondering if she should kill the Hound in his sleep and rescue Lady Catelyn herself. When she closed her eyes she saw her mother's face against the back of her eyelids. She's so close I could almost smell her...
...and then she could smell her. The scent was faint beneath the other smells, beneath moss and mud and water, and the stench of rotting reeds and rotting men. She padded slowly through the soft ground to the river's edge, lapped up a drink, the lifted her head to sniff. The sky was grey and thick with cloud, the river green and full of floating things. Dead men clogged the shallows, some still moving as the water pushed them, others washed up on the banks. Her brothers and sisters swarmed around them, tearing at the rich ripe flesh.
...
She splashed noisily through the shallows and threw herself into the deeper water, her legs churning. The current was strong but she was stronger. She swam, following her nose. The river smells were rich and wet, but those were not the smells that pulled her. She paddled after the sharp red whisper of cold blood, the sweet cloying stench of death. She chased them as she had often chased a red deer through the trees, and in the end she ran them down, and her jaw closed around a pale white arm. She shook it to make it move, but there was only death and blood in her mouth. By now she was tiring, and it was all she could do to pull the body back to shore. As she dragged it up the muddy bank, one of her little brothers came prowling, his tongue lolling from his mouth. She had to snarl to drive him off, or else he would have fed. Only then did she stop to shake the water from her fur. The white thing lay facedown in the mud, her dead flesh wrinkled and pale, cold blood trickling from her throat. Rise, she thought. Rise and eat and run with us. (Arya XII, ASoS)
--
"We learned that to our sorrow, Ser Donnel," Catelyn said. Sometimes she felt as though her heart had turned to stone; six brave men had died to bring her this far, and she could not even find it in her to weep for them. Even their names were fading. (Catelyn VI, AGoT)
--
"....till you stand before m'lady." Renly stood behind the girl, pushing his black hair out of his eyes. Not Renly. Gendry. "M'lady means for you to answer for your crimes."
"M'lady." The wine was making her head spin. It was hard to think. "Stoneheart. Is that who you mean?" Lord Randyll had spoken of her, back at Maidenpool. "Lady Stoneheart."
"Some call her that. Some call her other things. The Silent Sister. Mother Merciless. The Hangwoman." (Brienne VIII, AFfC)
--
Lord Beric sighed. "Then I will send you to Lady Smallwood for a time, or perhaps to mine own castle of Blackhaven. But that will not be necessary, I'm certain. I do not have the power to give you back your father, no more than Thoros does, but I can at least see that you are returned safely to your mother's arms."
"Do you swear?" she asked him. Yoren had promised to take her home too, only he'd gotten killed instead.
"On my honor as a knight," the lightning lord said solemnly. (Arya VII, ASoS)
--
Her face, Brienne thought. Her face was so strong and handsome, her skin so smooth and soft. "Lady Catelyn?" Tears filled her eyes. "They said...they said that you were dead."
"She is," said Thoros of Myr. "The Freys slashed her throat from ear to ear. When we found her by the river she was three days dead. Harwin begged me to give her the kiss of life, but it had been too long. I would not do it, so Lord Beric put his lips to hers instead, and the flame of life passed from him to her. And...she rose. May the Lord of Light protect us. She rose." (Brienne VIII, AFfC)

"You should bring this son of yours to court," Cersei told Lady Merryweather. "Six is not too young. Tommen needs other boys about him. Why not your son?" Joffrey had never had a close friend of his own age, that she recalled. The poor boy was always alone. I had Jaime when I was a child . . . and Melara, until she fell into the well. Joff had been fond of the Hound, to be sure, but that was not friendship. He was looking for the father he never found in Robert. A little foster brother might be just what Tommen needs to wean him away from Margaery and her hens. In time they might grow as close as Robert and his boyhood friend Ned Stark. A fool, but a loyal fool. Tommen will have need of loyal friends to watch his back. And then we have this what little finger tells ned.
And
"I was eight when my father sent me to foster at the Eyrie," Ned said. "Ser Rodrik tells me there is bad feeling between Robb and Prince Joffrey. That is not healthy. Bran can bridge that distance. He is a sweet boy, quick to laugh, easy to love. Let him grow up with the young princes, let him become their friend as Robert became mine. Our House will be the safer for it."
Don't mind me, just sitting here thinking about an AU where Ned is a little less honourable and instead of wanting to tell everyone the secret of cersei's bastards, he lives and rules as Joffreys regant.
"Now look at the other side of the coin. Joffrey is but twelve, and Robert gave you the regency, my lord. You are the Hand of the King and Protector of the Realm. The power is yours, Lord Stark. All you need do is reach out and take it. Make your peace with the Lannisters. Release the Imp. Wed Joffrey to your Sansa. Wed your younger girl to Prince Tommen, and your heir to Myrcella. It will be four years before Joffrey comes of age. By then he will look to you as a second father, and if not, well … four years is a good long while, my lord. Long enough to dispose of Lord Stannis. Then, should Joffrey prove troublesome, we can reveal his little secret and put Lord Renly on the throne
I kind of wish he had taken littlefingers advice, which is a bit ironic I guess that he didn't. In the second quote he is telling catelyn that Bran becoming a good friend and brother to Joffrey and tommen would be safer for house stark but then when it actually comes down to the safety of his house ned chooses his honour, putting his whole family at risk and his capture causing the north to go to war, resulting in the deaths of thousands of lives and the believed almost exctinction of his house.
He tries to fix it when his daughters lives are threatened but it's too late then and he gets beheaded.
I know that with the trident Incident Joffrey has shown he's cruel and what with his tendency's to kill animals from a young age (the cat and tommens baby deer) he doesn't have the best mental health but do ye think he could have become better if ned had become his father figure and he learned to rule from him.
Do ye think there was any chance for him to improve and grow as a character if things had been different?
