You heard a tired groan coming from the right of you in the passenger seat of the car, and you laughed as you took your eyes off the road for a second as you looked at your best friend. His eyes were tired from sleep and his hair was dishevelled from where he had been leaning against the window.
“You okay there, sleepy head?” you asked as you looked back at the road.
He stretched his arms above his head and gave you an adorable dimpled smile that you didn’t see. If you had seen it, it would have stopped your heart, “I’m good, do you want to pull over and I’ll drive?” he asked.
You shook your head, “it’s okay, I know how anxious you get driving on the highway.”
“Thanks, Y/N,” Dalton said quietly and you could hear the smile in his voice.
You were on your way to Dalton’s parents’ house, he’d invited you over for the Fall break and you wondered if this was the first time he’d brought a girl home. But, you supposed with his handsome face and sweet nature, you probably weren’t the first. That thought made a slightly sick feeling blossom in your stomach, but you ignored it. Dalton wasn’t your boyfriend, no matter how much you wanted him to be.
A couple of hours later, you pulled up outside a cute little house with a swing set in the big front yard. You watched in silence as Dalton grabbed your suitcase from the trunk of your car and you were almost hypnotised as you watched his muscles strain beneath his shirt.
“You okay, Y/N?” he asked.
Your eyes snapped back to his face, “uh yeah, I’m all good,” you smiled, it was going to be so hard trying to not let your feelings show.
He nodded and headed up the path to the house, with you following behind him closely. He knocked on the door and a couple of seconds later the door was pulled open and his parents grinned at the both of you. His dad pulled Dalton into a hug while his mom did the same to you.
“Hey, I’m Renai,” she grins as she pulls away.
You smile back, “I’m Y/N, thank you so much for having me.”
“No worries at all! I’m glad that Dalton finally brought a girl home.”
Dalton groaned, “mom!” he flushed as she kissed his cheek.
“Hi, I’m Josh,” the older man smiled and you waved shyly, he was hot.
“Y/N.”
As Dalton’s parents ushered you into the house, you glanced at Dalton and spoke quietly so his parents wouldn’t hear, “your dad is a dilf,” you laughed as Dalton gave you the most disgusted look you’d ever seen.
“You are vile.”
Renai smiled as she turned to look at you, “I’ve set up the spare room, will that be okay honey?”
You smiled at their kindness, but you shouldn’t be surprised by how welcoming they were, “that’s perfect, thank you so much.”
Dalton grinned as he nudged his shoulder against yours, “c’mon, I’ll show you were it is.”
“Keep the door open, Dalton,” Josh shouted after you both as you walked up the stairs, you could hear the laughter in Josh’s voice and you could tell that he was intentionally trying to embarrass his son.
“Jesus, dad!” he shouted back and you laughed as the tips of his ears turned red.
The room was so cute, it had a window seat that over looked the back yard and there was a selection of books on the bedside table. Dalton placed your suitcase on the bed and flushed, running a hand through his hair as you picked up a book.
“I told my mom that you liked to read, didn’t realise she was gonna buy the whole stock of Barnes and Noble.”
You smile up at him, “it’s sweet,” you flushed as you realised what he said, “you talk about me?”
Dalton’s lips parted but before he could answer, a voice from the doorway spoke up, “he never shuts up about you, Y/N,” a boy a little younger than Dalton was standing there with headphones around his neck and a smirk on his face.
There was a small girl standing at his side who giggled, covering her mouth, “Dalton’s right though, Y/N, you’re really pretty.”
Dalton groaned in frustration, it was like his whole family were out to get him, “these two nuisances are Foster and Callie,” he introduced you and you grinned at his siblings.
“I think nuisances is a bit harsh. I like them already,” you laugh.
The following day, the weather was extremely warm for the middle of October, so the Lamberts decided to have an impromptu BBQ. Dalton grinned at you as he glanced up at you from where he was sketching as you sat next to him. He let you rest your head against his shoulder as you watched him draw.
Foster snickered as he walked over to the both of you, “you never let me look at your art, bro.”
Dalton spoke up, his eyes never leaving the paper he was drawing on, “because I actually like Y/N.”
You and Foster exchanged a look, ever since you’d arrived at his parent’s house he’d been hinting that he had more than friendly feelings for you. Though, you didn’t want to get your hopes. Foster gave his older brother an incredulous look before he shook his head and walked away.
You smothered a laugh as you picked up your empty glass and nodded over at Dalton’s “want a refill?”
Dalton finally paused in his sketching to look up at you and he gave you a dimpled smile, “sure, thanks Y/N.”
Josh was in the kitchen as you poured your drinks, “hey want some ice?” he asked as he offered you the ice tray.
“Sure,” you smiled as you put some ice in your drink, “none for Dalton though, he hates it when he gets his drink watered down.”
Josh looked up at you in surprise, raising an eyebrow, “you know that about him?”
You nodded, aware of how hot your cheeks were getting.
“You like him don’t you? You like him more than a friend.”
You sigh and look at Josh, “yeah but I don’t want to ruin anything, I would rather have him as a friend than not at all.”
Josh smiled at you, “he likes you too, I can tell. You guys would look good together.”
You grinned up at him before heading back outside and you found Dalton staring into space, “hey, you okay?” you asked as you gave him his drink.
“Do you think I’m weird?”
“Whoa, where did that come from? Dalton of course I don’t,” you sat back down and laced your fingers through his.
He smiled at you as he gave your hand a squeeze, “thank you.”
“What for?”
He shrugged, his hand raking through his hair, “I can be me around you. I don’t have to pretend with you.”
You smile and take a deep breath, “Dalton, I like everything about you, I like the way you refuse to have ice in your drink, I like the way you cut the crusts off your sandwiches like a little kid and the way you get stressed when you drive on the highway. I like you, Dalton. More than just a best friend.”
Dalton grinned as his cheeks flushed as he leaned over and cupped your cheek, his warm breath blowing across your face, “I like you too,” he brushed his thumb against your bottom lip, “can I kiss you?” when you nod he leans in and presses his lips against yours in a soft kiss.
His family watch the interaction from the doorway and they all breathe a sigh of relief, “at least we don’t have to watch them obliviously pine for each other all week,” Foster snickered.
