I think the reason Jack got so good at drawing is because after his first few times in the refuge he just couldn’t ever sleep and he’d stay up all night needing something to do other than stare at a wall so he started scribbling and eventually that turned into doodles which turned onto sketches which turned into drawings and then one day his penthouse was covered in drawings of friends and family that he could look at as he went to sleep to remind himself that he was safe

i loveeee 92sies for giving a reallll look in the refuge. Obviouslyyyy we’re made aware in the stage show how bad it is but seeing it is a whole different level. seeing the boys tense up when snyder comes in or visibly flinch when theyre in trouble lets it feel a lot more real than it can when you’re only going off of letter from the refuge.
seeing the fact that while theres an entire room of bunk beds jacks left isolated and alone. not even given a mattress. seeing the fact he writes on the walls because Genuinely what else can he do while hes waiting around for snyder to do something to him. seeing the way crutchy has to talk to him. its sick.

you know what really gets to me. is how jack loosens up david’s morals. like how david starts off as a staunch pacifist because of the Optics and strategy of it all, but then later he kicks a cop in the face and threatens him with a swing + tries to punch jack when he scabs. and both instances occur specifically because he cares so deeply about jack. But also there's this tidbit from the 91 script
it's like. up until now, david's interactions with jack have largely consisted of david being openly skeptical/confrontational whenever he detects any kind of bullshit. and while he immediately clocks that all this stuff about santa fe is a lie, for the first time, he decides to let it go. Because there's a kernel of authenticity to the statement, though the authenticity doesn’t lie in factual truth, it’s in how jack desperately "wants it to be true". because. this is david's first time seeing the soft underbelly to jack. because david IS charmed by jack despite not really trusting him

FUCK this "crutchie depends on jack, jack protects crutchie" bs. give me the most ridiculously codependent friendship ever. they've lived together for years and don't know how to function without eachother. jack will sleep through the morning bell if crutchie isn't there to wake him up. jack always helps massage the pain out of crutchie's leg on bad days without him even having to ask. crutchie is there to help jack when he gets bad nightmares. they always make sure the other remembers to eat. give me unspoken favors and daily traditions. they can't live without EACHOTHER.

Why don't we talk about the fact that when uksies crutchie gets back from the refuge he looks downright feral - bruises and blood, messed up hair, an intense energy about him, anger, the stare at snyder's exit, aided by matthew duckett's naturally very large and expressive eyes. This guy has been through it and you can tell, it's not just 'yay crutchie's back and it's all good again' its 'crutchie's back and look what he's experienced and now has to live with'. It drives home the conditions of the refuge and how much was at stake for these kids, jack's 'what if he don't make it?' Wasn't hyperbole, the strike really was do or die for them. And crutchie got close.

Doing research about the New York House of Refuge and here are just a few findings
TW Abuse
Inmates were distinguished by different uniforms which signified different “classes” (unclear if this uniform system survived into the 20th century but it was at least used in the 1850/60s)
Class No. 1: shall include the best behaved and most orderly boys and girls; those who do not lie, or use profane or indecent language or conversation; who attend their work and studies, are not quarrelsome, and have not attempted to escape.
Class No. 2: Those who are next best, but who are not quite free from all the foregoing vices and practices.
Class No. 3: those who are more immoral in conduct than Class No. 2.
Class No. 4: those who are vicious, bad, or wicked.
The superintendent was supposed to treat the children as his own and show parental kindness to “win their confidence and affection” but if the children didn’t adhere to their rules there were “more severe measures… available” however, “less severe violations of the rules merited deprivation of play time or being sent to bed supperless at sunset. For more serious offenses, bread and water for breakfast, lunch, and supper might be ordered. Assaults upon officers or fellow inmates, or attempted escapes, generally resulted in confinement in solitary cells or corporal punishment.”
“Reformed inmates” were often signed to contracts working outside of the city until they turned 21. These contracts as you could probably guess were basically just great excuses to exploit children and usually resulted in heavy abuse
In the 1850-1860s some interviews were conducted with folks in the rehabilitation system (who’d been signed to contracts which revealed major abuse happening within the system (wow. What a surprise /s) won’t get into details but. Zoinks Scoob.
Boys in the system often said if you did something wrong you’d get “stars and stripes” in reference to the scars you would get from punishments

Newsies Prompts!
(I do love a good Jack/Davey story, but I have nothing against Jack/Katherine. Also these mostly revolve around the musical story line)
Let me know if y’all use these prompts or if you have any fic recommendations!
-The newsies go looking for Jack when he’s locked in basement and find him chained/beaten up
-Jack starves himself so the others can eat and people start to notice
-Jack suffers with depression or sh
-Jack gets hurt in the refuge and the others rescue him
-Jack takes crutchies place in the refuge and he gets hurt
-Jack starts do illegal things (secret fights, drugs, prostitution, etc.) to make more money to feed the newsies
-Jack goes mute after a traumatic event
-Jack stuck inside a burning building after running in to save Les, who unknown to Jack was already out
-Jack gets arrested and the newsies are at the hearing and eventually save him from the refuge
-what if in order to lower the price of papes Jack made a deal to do some illegal activities for Pulitzer?
-jack kidnapped
-s*icidal jack (maybe the newsies take shifts watching him and trying to help him)
-Jack struggles with addiction
Im here for all the angst 😅 I would love to see these with a modern twist on them too!
