speaking of yarn ive been meaning to ask since ive heard of it elsewhere, is the general quality of yarn you can get going down? ive been looking into fibercraft but ive been told its getting harder and harder to find actual good thread without some sort of plastic in it, especially for a good price. so ive been wondering is this true or was it made out to be a much larger problem than it really is (in your experience)?

i've only been into crochet for a couple of years, so i'm not a Fiber Arts Veteran who can tell you the difference between shopping for supplies now vs 30 years ago! i don't really have anything to compare Current Yarns to. in my experience, the only thing i can speak on is cost, and it seems like the cost for yarn has probably been going up. animal fibers are certainly more expensive, acrylic yarns are budget-friendly but are synthetic, if that's something you're worried abt.

so i don't think that stuff is Untrue, but i also don't think it's any reason at all to avoid getting into fiber arts, and you can absolutely find yarns made from cotton / wool / bamboo fiber and stuff like that for good prices! it would probably be harder in-person, like in the aisles of a hobby lobby. but i think lion brand and lovecrafts are good sites to browse for yarn/supplies. it's really not a small-scale problem, someone like moi who's recently gotten into crochet and does it for funsies based on my whims/needs isn't going to really notice, i don't think. as an aside, if we're talking about crochet specifically, you can really crochet with anything at all- i've been making a tote bag out of plastic grocery bags, lmao. reduce reuse recycle or whatever. people will also use strips of fabric instead of yarn, and that's good for stuff like rugs / bags / baskets, chunkier projects. (though ig you could probably make some clothing if you cut the strips of fabric thin enough.) so as far as accessibility to the craft, there is that!

Part 2 of the Barazushi weapon collab (that I promise I didn't forget about)!

For the Undercover Brella, I went with a lavender color you sometimes see in Barazushi's gear. I figured the patches on the canopy would give it the kind of rugged vibe Barazushi has.

For the E-liter, I wanted the metal to look kind of like it was recycled from a scrapyard; it's a little scuffed and starting to rust in some places. The Barazushi logo is etched into the body. I wanted the plastic parts on it to look slightly sun-bleached, and I gave the coil around the barrel Barazushi's trademark orange for an accent.

what i am proposing is that one of those check in questions could be "what year is it?" as in:

so this gives us two character choices about Glenn's response

option 1) the correct answer is a year from Glenn and Morgan's past ~~probably 1997 because that's the date Freddie pulled for both Glenn's time at bannaroo, and Nicks birth even though.~~ we could call it the year Glenn and Morgan met (glenn would of ben 11 btw)

this means Glenn's line "Nah, you know what? Uh... it's good to hear your voice." is Glenn understanding that this call is not with his Morgan, or possibly not with a Morgan at all, and he has decided to continue listening because it's genuinely nice to hear her voice and pretend he is talking to her

option 2) the "correct" answer to this check in is what Morgan said, possibly both saying the current year to help ground the ask-er in reality, and then also bringing up back to the future explicitly and pointing out the specific reference.

meaning that to the best of his ability this Morgan is a Morgan who a version of him trusted enough to share that with. and therefore the purple robes are actually able to at least give him a phone call with his wife, and so might also be able to deliver on the full promise. then Glenn's "it's good to hear your voice." is him making the conscious and fully informed decision to give up a future with his wife because of his love for his son and loyalty to his friends

His apartment stinks like a flower shop, he has more paper cuts than he can count from the stack of “get well soon” cards piling up on his kitchen table — and there is a couch in his living room. A couch, one that he didn’t buy — didn’t even get a say in picking it out. It’s fine, big enough to fit multiple people watching a game. It’s not ugly or anything, his mother is at least skilled at interior design. The new matching area rugs he has is proof enough of that.

But he can’t do that. Because he was struck by lightning, and stuck in a coma — which means he needs to take it easy. That means no heavy lifting, and no throwing furniture out his window. He knows he could call someone for help, Eddie, or Bobby. Hell, Chimney would probably be thrilled to help. But Buck’s tolerance for visitors, for worried faces and hovering hands, is just about all used up. 

Buck feels like crawling out of his skin. He’s never done well just sitting still, always needs to be on the move, have something planned. A project of some kind, something to fix. But in this case all there is to fix is himself. The air of the loft feels like it’s becoming more stale with each passing day of his recovery and recuperation. He knows it’s a miracle he’s even alive to have the ability to rest and recover, and he’s grateful that his heart is still pumping and his lungs are still taking in air. But whenever he starts to think about the air on his tongue, it starts to taste like the recycled air they pumped into his lungs through a plastic tube. He can still feel the phantom ache of it in his throat, the unforgiving plastic scratching the sensitive skin raw. No matter how much water he drinks, or how much he rubs at the skin of his neck until it’s bright pink, the ache is still there.

I’ve spent years encouraging people to ditch single-use plastic. Probably the most egregious example of single-use plastic is bottled water: The bottles are made from fossil fuels, the water filling them is often taken from communities and ecosystems that need it, and the pollution created when they’re disposed of will outlast all of us.

So when I heard that people were getting excited about the Stanley cup—a durable, reusable alternative to bottled water—at first it seemed like a victory. Stanley drinkware has been around for decades, mostly marketed as a rugged brand for workmen and outdoorsmen. But recently the company repackaged its signature products in a rainbow of colors and began marketing to women, positioning itself as a lifestyle brand for people headed to the carpool line or yoga class. Stanley’s collaborations with influencers sparked a storm of social media buzz, with people rushing to snatch up the latest limited edition and amassing collections of the colorful tumblers. The excitement over the Stanley cup grew into a fad—and that fad has become costly for the planet.

Unfortunately, Stanley cups are far from the only eco-conscious product to get corrupted by consumerism. Earth Day is just around the corner, and my inbox is currently filling up with Earth Day promotions from nearly every company that’s gotten ahold of my email address.

A few months ago, I bought a new pair of organic cotton pants from a company that uses minimal packaging and donates to conservation. I loved the fit and felt good about my purchase. But now that it’s almost Earth Day, this eco-conscious company is trying to make me believe that the only way to help the planet is to buy another pair of pants. By commercializing Earth Day, we’ve missed the point.

It's like this every year. Earth Day has become another “Hallmark holiday” marked by special sales and promotions, just another excuse to get people to spend money on things they don’t really need. Somehow, it’s even become an opportunity to shower kids with gifts. An HGTV article published last year promotes “20 Buys to Help Kids Celebrate Earth Day Every Day.” The gift suggestions range from wooden toys and organic cotton tees to kid-sized gardening tools and animal-adorned dinnerware made from bamboo.

Now, there’s nothing inherently wrong with a junior gardening kit or bamboo dinnerware. In fact, many of the ideas on these lists are better-than-average products in terms of environmental impact. Anything that gets kids interacting with the environment is better than cheap, plastic indoor toys; if you’re in the market for durable plates your kids can’t break, looking for sustainable materials is a good call. The problem is that we’re being sold a myth that shopping is the solution to our environmental crises.

The first Earth Day was a call to action against rampant air and water pollution. Twenty million people took part in demonstrations across the United States, and the movement led to the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency and some of our country’s strongest environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. There were rallies and teach-ins around the country. People talked about the connections between environmental health and poverty, population pressure and pesticides. There were gardening workshops and automobile burials. It was a political, radical, and joyous event. No one went home with a swag bag full of face creams in recyclable jars and bamboo plates for the kids.

Earth Day has been watered down from a revolutionary moment that recognized shared values and the common threat of environmental harm to a day that’s little more than a social media hashtag like National Siblings Day or National Ice Cream Day. No amount of sustainable Earth Day purchases can buy our way out of the climate crisis or protect endangered species from extinction.

When environmental action is defined by the types of products we buy, we’ve really lost the plot.
