I am now all caught up, and I gotta say. Amazing. Show-stopping. Incredible. Studio Trigger has once again rewired my brain and I cannot let this go. Cannot wait for the next episode, however, that rollercoaster of emotions must wait after the horror that is Baron from the Baronies.

Anyway. Ten outta ten, I will now knock myself out and finally get some sleep.

The Tri[MMM]ings: Delicious in Dungeon Missed Manga Moments (Episode 1)

This is the first of a series of posts where I chronicle the small tidbits/character interactions that were cut during the transition from manga to anime, for the series Delicious in Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi by Ryoko Kui! All screenshots from the manga will be taken from Mangadex/#EverydayHeroes Scans, so please check them out! Also, a shoutout to @dungeon-meshi-leftovers, a blog that's doing a very similar thing but more focused on archiving every single little thing cut, with detailed image descriptions for those needing them!

Now, lets get into it!

I was happily surprised with how little content the first episode trimmed out! The first cuts come in the opening fight scene with the red dragon. When Laios mentions how his party got lost and almost fell into traps, there's actually a handful of drawings that show them getting into the hijinks! It's understandable that they cut this out, but I'd love to see more of Laios's old party before they had been separated.

Speaking of them being separated... the next thing cut was the two party members talking to Chilchuck and giving him the notes themselves. I wish this was put into the anime. I'm keeping their names unrevealed, as they haven't been said in the anime yet, but this cut makes them feel less personable and more like side characters, sadly.

The next cut does not happen until Laios and friends begin to enter the dungeon. This little doodle of Marcille reading the paper is missing in the anime, which is a shame. Again, it just gives a bit more personality into the characters. Understandable, but still sad!

These next three moments that were trimmed fall into the same boat that I feel like I'm going to have to call out a lot; both Laios and Senshi have a tendency to go into great amounts of detail when talking about monsters/food in general, and a lot of it gets understandably cut out. However, it's a shame, because not only is it a great piece of world building, but it also really shows how passionate and knowledgeable each of them are about their hobbies.

This next part is what I believe to be the BIGGEST CRIME that the anime has committed. Yes, the food is animated and colored beautifully, but both the ingredients list and the nutrition chart are nowhere to be seen in the anime!! I absolutely love these little details Ryoko put in about the food, and it's so sad to see them not in the show. A shame!

There's also going to be a lot of cut out ingredient spotlights. For example, there's a little drawing of where each separate fruit came from and their names in the manga. Definitely hard to translate to a video format.

Finally, there's a little gag that's cut out of Chilchuck hitting his head on a branch. Completely understandable why they cut it out, again, but still sad to see it go.

ok for fun, list of things i know about dungeon meshi ("delicious in dungeon") despite never watching it, reading the manga, or touching any sort of wiki for it: 1. the fact that it's been adapted into an anime, the name, and the translation of the japanese name 2. the author may have taken a hiatus or ended the manga because of Baldurs Gate 3 coming out 3. there is a guy named Laius/Laios. he may be the blond guy who wears armor. 4. the guy who wears armor is insane about eating creatures 5. dungeon meshi is about eating creatures. in a dungeon. unclear whether they are trapped in the dungeon or not 6. they not only eat creatures but cook them in fun ("fun") ways. 7. there is a cat girl named Itzsumi (?) and she is literally a cat but her... beast soul... is repressed by a human soul... that got stuck in her? which may have happened after the human who the soul belonged to 'slept with the fishes.' 8. there's a guy named chilchuck. he either has dark hair and wears a helmet or is very short with brunette-ish hair. unclear on this one 9. there is a halfling, an elf, and a healer in the adventuring party. chilchuck may also be the halfing. 10. dungeon meshi follows an adventuring party 11. the healer dies in the first episode and also might be part bird or something 12. the elf girl is blond with green eyes. i think 13. there may be a human girl involved who is a little unhinged 14. there is a female character who is tired of eating monsters this is all I can think of right now but if I think of more I may reblog to amend @cowcowwow please tell me I have achieved a good grade in Media Osmosis which is both normal to want and possible to achieve

Alright you got me. What's dungeon meshi and where do I read or watch it because I reblogged one thing out of context and then saw, in order, hungry dragon lady + panty shot + hairy beefy guy (from the panty shot?) cooking and now I'm listening.

Lmao Dungeon Meshi is a very good series about cooking and eating monsters in a DnD style dungeon! The manga is short, sweet, and complete and a free fan translation is easily available to find online. The anime is currently available on Netflix and is updating weekly in Japanese, English, Spanish, French, Italian, a couple other languages I think.

The story is one of those ones that starts with a silly concept of What If You Could Cook Monsters???! and then the author just went off with the world building in the best ways possible. It's a story about the hierarchy of consumption and who has the right or privilege to consume others. As you can imagine it's kinda horny in an NBC Hannibal way.

Senshi is indeed the guy from the panty shot and the hairy guy cooking! He has a lot of those and is the only character that has panty shots, even with a large cast of female characters.

I jest I jest (unless….) I can recommend some great artists but I don’t necessarily know of any blogs that just post general dungeon meshi besides myself. And @/dungeonmessy though it deletes its posts pretty often, fantastic fanart (also big fan of its original work, check it out). There’s also @/namaris who's been reblogging a lot of great dunmesh posts lately. Though im pretty sure thats not all they post (i don't follow them myself, i just follow the dungeon meshi tag)

anyway great artists i like; wombrion - not exclusively dungeon meshi but such a fantastic art style and staple to the fandom as far as i can tell. also comms open i think! Wattse - another staple imo, such beautiful detailed works. Also not exclusively dungeon meshi but maybe you like the other things they post about ! kemafili - apparently this is the man known for "my son egg and his brother cheese" but i followed him for dungeon meshi and then he got me into All Saints Street so very worth it. He posts some very wild things about Laios tho be ready (for the truth, frankly). Very funny, VERY fucking talented, number one absolute CEO of Laios x Namari. Also I think you should follow maria-ruta she honestly does not post that much dunmesh but they're a fan and have such amazing art and original characters check her out anyway. smiles

there's also savaralyn, if you're looking for leaks and very simple translations. He releases Ryoko Kui's personal blog sketches and translates anything that hasn't already been translated using a combination of ai and his own understanding of the language. The result is... usable. I don't follow him since there's a number of posts floating around describing him as problematic. But his blog archive is very useful, for example I own the world guide/adventurer's bible but i can only really get clean scans of the pages from savaralyn's blog.

Again, got into it when I was younger and it kind of burrowed its way into my brain where it rotted, forgotten, for ages until the sudden new season. Not necessarily emotionally invested, but the Three Of Them have my whole heart for sure.

I got into it VERY recently by binging the manga, and now I'm keeping up with the Netflix adaptation! Obsessed with the solid worldbuilding.

Top fandom ever everrrrr. Got obsessed with it as a kid and I’ve never let it go since. Have ya seen or read either delicious in dungeon or frieren? I dunno how you feel about refan these days but I figured some popular fantasy series would give ya a chance to get more into the genre/setting/etc

Dungeon Meshi.....aka the anime with a very yuri coded scene being blasted all over the internet? .....of course I'd watch it. 8U Give this himejoshi a good yuri or shojo-esque scene and there's a good chance I'll be all over it! <(˘ ˘ ˘)>

(Narrator: this didn't apply to the one Yuri bait scene in MHA with Himiko and the floaty girl)

Tbh I got a bit spoiled on it (between the bath scene, and the thing that directly lead to needing the bath scene that looks like it was a scene outta that Locked Tomb novel I need to finish XU). But tbf, that spoiler did get me interested. And I am liking it!

Plus that main genre of that anime (fantasy adventure) was something up my boyfriend's alley so I figured he'd enjoy it too. And he did! And we're now waiting for the next ep. Marcille is my(/our?) fav I think.

Frieren I've heard and seen stuff from it (one person I follow was reblogging a lot of both). I kept getting it confused with DunMesh tbh. We checked out the trailer but......it's didn't grab either of us. I'll look a diff trailer later to see if it gives us more info on what's going on. TT0TT

We just finished Hell's Paradise (those last few eps may have caused me to start shipping Sagiri and Yuzuhira pretty hard u_u alksfjdl) And we ended up starting....Mashle, only watched the first ep but it looks promising!

That's in the fantasy genre too I think (tho it seems more like a comedy)? I wanted to watch it cause I was interested in the char designs (kept seeing them with Tamashii figures).

i think we're about the same age so im curious... i was SUPER into every anime airing from 2007-2013 (aka my middle/high school years), and trailed off by about 2014. i'm so out of the loop on shit now, ive watched maybe 3 or 4 series in the last 7 years. my nostalgic ass tends to be all "those were the good ol days," but you've actually been keeping up (afaik). how would you say anime/the industry of today compares to that of a decade ago? has much changed? i suppose that's kind of wildly broad... but i respect your opinions a lot and we share a lot of the same tastes. if that's too big a question, then: what do you rec watching/reading from the last 10 years?? :0)

Okay this has been sitting in my drafts for months, sorry anon. I wanted to answer it sooner but I got nervous that I was forgetting some stuff in my recommendations and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t forgetting anything before posting it, but I think it’ll be better that if I forgot something I’ll just add it in a reblog or make a marked edit later to add it rather than to keep waiting to publish it.

Hhhh this is hard, I kinda struggle to give recommendation because the second I get asked for recommendations I tend to forget everything I've ever liked, but I'll try

To answer the question: I think this kind of thing is normal and it happens to a lot of people when they get around this age. I feel there were a lot of periods where I stopped watching anime for a good while and came back to it later.

I honestly don't think anime used to be better 10 years ago. I think it's super easy to look back and think that because of nostalgia but, I think the amount of good stuff being produced is like about the same. I DO think there is more bad stuff being produced lmao. This is because the number of anime being produced has increased and it often means more crap being made. This means it can be a bit harder to find what stuff is good in the sea of so much anime, but I do think there's some pretty good stuff being made nonetheless.

I don't watch/read as much stuff as I used to when I was younger, but it's because I simply don't have time. My list of things to watch is pretty big for that reason orz. Normally I keep up with only one show at the time.

This is my Pinned Post to explain what I post where.

I often post doodle dumps and lineart that you ARE free to use! Just make sure you look on the post’s commentary to double check. Credit is appreciated.

I also like coloring other peoples’ lineart, if you have some you’re not motivated to finish, but want to see it done.

TLDNR Version (read first regardless):

This is my main. Eco-friendly stuff mostly, original art, ATLA, and I am entering a new era of fanart within a slew of other fandoms so let me get that sorted.

(mostly animation, but some Steam games and medical dramas will be included hopefully as well)

Currently I am way into Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, hoping Kipo or Dogs in Space somehow get the attention they deserve, which despite the utterly silly sounding names, have hints of much larger societal themes, and are quite solid and awesome.

Dungeon Meshi: I’ve literally never bought a print manga before despite having dabbled in anime a little, but this one has convinced me.

Undertale sideblogs: add ‘ask-anachro-’ to the front of your favorite characters, and at least one should show up. I do half the main cast.

Instagram: The IG of my same name hosts pet portrait paintings

Instagram (metellastella_fandom) fanart for Pokemon, ATLA, Undertale, etc.

I have poems about practically any subject you’d care to name. I frequently share these as Google Docs, and may eventually record for Spoken Word for Soundcloud and/or YT. I also have some essays/rants and I’m not sure what blog platform I want to use. Any suggestions?

I am working on a couple of novels, which I also have samples for in Google Docs.

Will not crosspost within IG accounts or Tumblr sideblogs if I can absolutely help it, so feel free to follow more than one with the expectation you will not see the same thing twice. Will occasionally add something I think of later from a differently focused account, though.

On my main Tumblr, I post a blend of general social justice, mixed with environmental justice and sustainability, and wildlife and cute and/or interesting animals, and also Avatar the Last Airbender. I have a sideblog that is dedicated primarily to ATLA reblogs but also a sprinkling of other fandoms that come up and some discussion on others’ headcanons (Hashtag: #CAPTLOK Commentary) and my own story. (Next tagging project is probably going to be #Metella Metas) For the time being, more of my main fic specifically is posted on FFN than A03. Hashtag: #WMTE

My other main fandom is Undertale, and I have several ask blogs where the characters get into general shenanigans and also speak on topics they’re interested in, and fun facts. Oh and I also do voices and songs for a lot of them on Soundcloud, which I will crosspost links to for your listening pleasure on Tumblr.

The reason I don’t post Pokemon art to Tumblr on any blogs is because it would take a whole lot of work to transfer the mountains worth of fanart I’ve already done to here. (I’ve already got more to transfer from my first DA account, before they enabled username changes). Also, I am not as deep into the character and worldbuilding aspects of the Pokemon franchise. On Tumblr, I try to focus on fandoms I write for, since it enables text better and people actually evaluate it (unlike my witty Artists’ Comments on DA I spent years submitting, and adding cute emoticons to, which I’m not sure anyone actually reads) so as for my being visually inspired, I decided to keep to platforms that are focused on images.

The reasons why DA hosts a lot more of my content than IG is (a) I’ve been on there a whole lot longer and (b) I have a heck of a time trying to fit some art and comics to the limited image scale on IG. On Deviantart and the specific Instagram ‘sideblog’ (@metellastella_fandom), Pokemon art ranges from semi-realistic to super cartoony.

For @metellastella_fantasy, the critters are also posted on DA and it’s much easier to download my lineart than from IG (in fact I’m not sure it’s possible at all there??)

I have some other sideblogs, but I’d rather not mention them here, because I’m self-conscious about conflict. (when on a more front-facing ‘public’ platform ofc- anybody who knows me knows I can rip into a good debate 1-on-1) If we’re already friends and I’ve talked to you some, and you’re curious about the sideblogs, you can PM me.

Not that I know any hugely-deep matpat it’s-just-a-game-theory™ lore of the Legend of Zelda but Hylians, the race they are called in LoZ, are just an off-shoot of humans. But for simplicity sake, Link and Zelda fit the bill pretty well, and this blog is mainly to show off good character designs and personalities, rather than adhere to a universe’s or game setting’s lore. Hence why there is already a small handful LoZ reblogs.

I also dealt with this problem awhile back with another setting with Isekai Shokudou, Restaurant To Another World. Minor spoilers of said anime below.

but if you want the tl;dr of it beforehand, if the character design holds up to 1 single panel of Dungeon Meshi knives, it’s probably good enough. And I either don’t want to or will not police submissions as rigorously as I police my own.

Restaurant to Another World has a few elves that appear in it;

namely Kuro

and Faldania

Now Faldania is your bog-standard elf, pun suiting but not intended, of blonde, pointy ears and wears green. Whee. Nothing about her character is particularly interesting, and she is relegated to only a few scenes and 1 center-stage episode and I generally see her as extremely bland toast that somehow got soggy.

Kuro on the other hand is slightly more interesting. Plain garb that sudo-acts as the uniform for the restaurant, emotionally distant but not detached, and has a vastly more interesting backstory. The kicker here is that she is technically not and elf but a dragon, who’s just using a glamour or polymorph spell to appear as an elf, but still retains all her power as a dragon. And, in lore, an extremely powerful one and that.

So the original conundrum was whether or not I take some screenshots and nice frames of the anime that highlights Kuro despite not being technically an elf. I bounced back and forth between the idea for a few weeks, until I eventually forgot about it because Marcille acts as a fine enough buffer until I actually find some good designs and not just ones that I consider ‘good enough.’
