Happy Anniversary, Steven Universe!
Gosh, it’s already been 10 years since the first episode aired, and 4 years since it ended. Anybody feel old?
I wonder how they are. Steven, The Crystal Gems, Homeworld, Beach City. Maybe Steven’s finally at peace with himself, and his therapy has helped him recover fully. Maybe he’s discovered more about himself on his journey, but I guess we’ll never know.
Steven Universe was more than a Show of intergalactic rebel rock aliens. It’s a show which perfectly symbolised some things in todays world that just aren’t understood. Like racism, transgender people, etc. As a kid, I was so against trans people as well as gay people. Maybe that was because of the environment I grew up in, but Steven Universe showed me that sometimes the way you come into this world isn’t how you truly feel, as well as explaining to me that love can happen between anyone regardless. I guess you can say it added to my character development
I’m sure Steven Universe has helped lots of people all around the world. Whether it helped them emotionally, inspired them to reach for the stars, or simply made them understand some complicated things in todays day and age.
Steven Universe, thank you ever so much. You’ve made such an impact on my life. And thank you too, Rebecca Sugar. If it weren’t for you, this masterpiece wouldn’t have made its mark on this world.
Happy 10th, Anniversary, Steven Universe ⭐️

Part One: What we know
When exactly the rebels in the Capitol began gathering is unknown to us. We know there has been an undercover group “for several years” aiming to overthrow the Capitol (CF, 27). We also learn about Plutarch’s plans during the 10th Anniversary Interview, where Collins mentions that a tribute at the centre of the rebellion had been a plan for at least a decade, and hopes had been centered around candidates such as Finnick (SC).
There is no further information on when the underground group came into being, but we learn about several of their members, including Plutarch, Cinna, Tigris, Cressida, as well as her remaining team. We rightfully can speculate on Portia being included, too.
As this is my favourite element of the series to contemplate on, I have put together a timeline that  paraphrases my own thoughts!
Part Two: My own speculation
50 ADD: Haymitch’s Games as the spark for the rebellion
A young intern Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee watches the 50th Hunger Games and sees a fallen rebel in the Games. If only he had had a little aid from a powerful hand within. Painted by injustices that the mad king had done to the people within the Capitol, and a belief that democracy serves Panem better, Plutarch begins to think about rebellion in a riddle: How could one end the tyranny?
Late 50s: Plutarch recruits Caesar Flickerman
Among the first people he recruits is Caesar Flickerman, whose feelings on the Capitol have made a 180 ever since he began to work closely with the tributes. As he is close to the tributes and victors, he is the perfect person to recruit and stay in contact with victors, as well as manipulate the viewership to pay close attention to a potential candidate. Over the years, they become close friends.
60s: More allies join the rebellion
Victors such as Haymitch, Beetee, and Lyme begin to join the rebellion. Within the Capitol, Plutarch recruits people such as Tigris to join their forces. They consider an escape to District 13 as their plan begins to take further shape. Most rebels only know of a few allies as to not compromise the mission.
Late 60s: Searching for a Spartacus
As resources grow and a plan becomes realistic, Plutarch begins to look out for potential candidates. Several fail in the arena, and others do not spark a rebellion as he had hoped.
Plutarch establishes himself as a Head Gamemaker to have a stronger influence on future Games and their Gamemakers, as well as becoming a trusted advisor to Snow.
[The events of my fanfiction ‘She smelled like white roses’ take place here, where Plutarch befriends, falls in love with, and recruits Virgilia Snow, the wife of the President]
Early 70s: Reaching out to District 13 and recruiting more allies
Plutarch finds life in District 13, making his plan to escape to 13 even more viable. He also recruits people such as Cressida and Cinna, the latter who is an aspiring designer and promises to jump in on last notice to a potential District.
Cinna’s role in the rebellion is to wait for a potential candidate, and aid in their appearance before the Games. He has prepared several designs for several Districts.
74 ADD, 74th Reaping Day
Katniss’ volunteering brings hope to a stagnant underground movement. Several things are set into motion, including replacing District 12’s stylist with Cinna on very short notice.
74 ADD, Pre-Games
Katniss notes that a Gamemaker keeps watching her and we could assume that this is Plutarch (THG, 7). We also know Plutarch is present during her evaluation at least, as he is the Gamemaker who falls into the punch bowl (CF, 6). Possibly, he also pressed for a high score to give Katniss further attention, under the guise of punishing her. He might even have pressed to include bow and arrow ‘to make the Games more interesting’.
Caesar as a potential ally would have intentionally asked Peeta about a love back home and allowed for Katniss to spin her dress. The interviews work perfectly in the rebellion’s favour.
74 ADD, The 74th Games
I assume that the rebels, specifically Plutarch and Virgilia Snow, convinced Seneca to a rule change. As Plutarch would have been a former Head Gamemaker retired, he might have had a mentorship role over current Head Gamemakers. This, along with President Snow possibly pushing to quench hope at its height, might have moved Seneca to a rule change that was always meant to be temporary.
74 ADD, Post-Games
Katniss excels far beyond what the underground movement might have hoped for. The early waves of rebellion begin and grow fast, leaving the rebellion to try and set into motion Plutarch’s return to Head Gamemaker status—a process aided by someone close to the President; his wife Virgilia.
Shortly after the end of the 74th Games, the plans for the 75th arena’s layout begin.
75 ADD, The Victory Tour and the Quarter Quell announcement
By the time that Katniss arrives at the Capitol for her victory tour, the flames of rebellion have grown ever further. Plutarch only needs to fuel them and get the main part of the rebels to 13.
Many have questioned Plutarch’s words and how far his plans are when he talks to Katniss. His statement that arenas aren’t built in a day is, I think, code in the same way that his statement on the mockingjay watch is.
The arena that isn’t built in a day is the underground movement, wanting to hint at there being powerful allies who have been waiting for her for a while.
Plutarch wanting her as a mentor figure is, I think, his plan B. In my theory, he is currently pursuing the President to change the Quarter Quell but has not yet pushed far enough. If we look at the movies, then the rule change here, too, only happens after the victory tour. Movie!Plutarch would have assumed Katniss to NOT have been in the arena here, too. But that does not mean it wasn’t his hope to have her inside the arena.
75 ADD, Post Quarter Quell announcement
Plans are brought into motion, final arrangements with District 13 are being made. The rebels finally are seeing their plans brought to life.
Cinna begins his design plans for Katniss’ mockingjay suit and hands them to Plutarch shortly before the beginning of the Quarter Quell.
The victors are informed about the final plan of the Quarter Quell right before its start, and only for as much as they need to know. They learn about the bread code and several plans are laid out that Katniss can escape; the lightning tree not being the sole solution. I assume there are several plans as the bread code changes from four days (without Beetee) to three days (with Beetee). It would also be surprising if Plutarch didn’t have a plan B up his sleeves.
Lastly, I take it that the destruction of the arena was not truly that necessary, as hovercrafts get in and out all the time (with or without the help of an inside source). Plutarch might simply have liked the metaphor of a physically destroyed arena.

Steve walked as fast as he could; he had to leave the motorbike abandoned; he knew he would be followed through the city's camera system; however, first he had to go back to the hospital for the memory...
He didn't understand why the Strike team had attacked him, especially Rumlow if they were supposed to be friends.
"It kind of feels personal," he kept thinking, although maybe Brock was just doing his job.
But sending in the Strike team seemed like too much; even they might have rebelled. If there was something else, though, he was going to find out what was going on.
Maybe things had never been what he thought they were, and nothing was what it seemed.

I love Ever After High more than I could probably ever say, but I’ll try in honor of its 10th anniversary.
I discovered Ever After High when I was maybe 7 or 8 years old, so I was very young, and I LOVED Disney Princess movies (kind of ironic given the history, huh?) and so I discovered the Brothers Grimm fairytales, and I adored those too. I find a series from a YouTuber I don’t remember the name of (7 Super girls? Or something?) And I think the video was “What’s your favorite show?” And the girl in the video explains what Ever After High is and that sounds AWESOME to a little kid like me. It was a high school for the children of the Brothers Grimm characters?????? AMAZING! Obviously not much was aid about the more,,grizzly details of the stories as this was a child’s doll line as well.
I started watching, and I instantly fell in love with Raven Queen when I saw what her whole deal was, also I really liked her style, as I was a little emo kid, and Raven striving to be herself in a world that didn’t accept that, that she had to just follow the rules that actively worked against her. That struck a little cord with me, and I wouldn’t realize it until many years later, but, spoiler! I’m trans. Raven is a character that, in general, means so much to me. I full person and soul mean this when I say she is my favorite fictional character of all time. Raven Queen meant so much to me, and others as well.
Ashlynn and Hunter because I ate, slept and BREATHED True Hearts Day as a kid, to see these two people that loved each other, so deeply and true that they were willing to sacrifice their stories for one another despite the danger. Society told the two of them their love was wrong, Ashlynn’s best friend even told her she thought it was wrong, and that crushed Ashlynn. She even broke up with Hunter over her fears about their stories, but also so everyone would just. Stop. The whole reason they even told ANYONE was because Duchess had threatened to essentially out them when they weren’t ready.
Then, after all of that pain, and trail and tribulation they got up, well Ashlynn did, she got up and she told the whole world that she loves Hunter, and doesn’t care what anyone, or their destines have to think. If she can’t love Hunter and be a royal? Then call her Ashlynn Ella the rebel!
Then as the years went on, I got older, and Dragon Games aired. I saw Darling Charming, a character I didn’t really care about too much until I got older, and I saw her give “CPR” to Apple White, a character I hated, and ALSO grew to love as I got older.
My personal feelings to these character didn’t matter, though. I saw these girls KISS on screen. I saw two same gender people give TRUE. LOVES. KISS. to one another for the first time ever. It wasn’t just an m/f couple with some VERY gay subtext. Seeing that kiss was more magical than anything in the show. That one moment between two characters that I grew up watching, as if to say it was okay..I won’t lie when I tell you I maybe cried that night after I finished watching it. It made me feel so happy, so seen. Safe.
As I got older, I saw these characters in different lights, and I saw more depth to them than I ever did before. Characters I hated as a kid suddenly made more sense, this horrible system of destiny looked so much more daunting and scary than it ever did before. I hated Apple as a kid, and that’s an understatement. Sorry Apple fans, I love her now, and that’s because as I aged I saw more depth in her than I did when I was younger.
Apple was also a victim of destiny, just in a different way than say Raven, or Briar. She had such high expectations put on her from her mother, her father, the WHOLE SOCIETY THEY ARE STRUCTURED AROUND. Apple also faced a traumatic experience as a kid that also just reinforced this line of thinking. She had her entire life planned, if she liked that or not, and she couldn’t escape it. Apple was faced with harsh reality so suddenly at what was supposed to be the biggest, most important day of her entire life. All of that particular planning to be the perfect princess, her entire life’s purpose for as far as she knew, was over. Torn away in an instant with the rip of a page. It would make sense that Apple would take so long to come around to the idea of choosing your own destiny, or that CHOOSING can also mean living your destined story, but maybe with some tweaks.
Apple’s whole arc in Dragon Games and Way Too Wonderland is just so good. I love her so much.
ALSO Raven never even wanted to start a whole movement or anything, she just wanted to not be like her mother, she just didn’t want to be evil. She was just 15, like literally everyone else in the show. All she wanted was to exist as herself, and it was a battle to get close to that goal.
I realized as I aged, and in general became a tad more jaded towards the world that oppressive systems don’t really help anyone. A lot of kids at Ever After High, royal or rebel, is screwed over with the destiny system in some way. It made me think about our own society in ways I haven’t before, but that’s a talk for another day.
Also, as a kid I only had access to YouTube and maybe Netflix, so I didn’t read any of the books until literally about two years ago when I could get my hands on them, so I literally just have NEW information to sift through, and grow with a world that I’ve had for so long with me already.
I think there’s so much more i can say about family issues, and family non-issues, and about culture, or the way there are rebels who want their destiny, but still side with the rebels because they think everyone should have a free choice, or how Cedar and Cerise feel just a tad trans to me, or THE WONDERLANDIANS AND RED AND BADWOLF, but that’s more general fandom posting or a bit too personal, so I’ll just leave it here.
In conclusion, Ever After High, it’s been a beautiful, spellbinding 10 years and I’m so thankful for the fans, the people that made the series/dolls/books/etc, and that I wish all of these characters, and people a Happily Ever After in their own ways.

Today we venerate Ancestor & Hoodoo Saint, Charles Deslondes on the 212th anniversary of his passing. 🕊 (Updated 2024)
Tumblr media
Deslondes was a Haitian-born brotha, believed to be from Saint Domingue, who was forced into the role of overseer on the Andry Plantation in Louisiana until he took up arms against them.
He was born on the Jacques Deslondes plantation around 1789. He was described as being as a “Creole mulatto slave by the name of Charles, “about 16 years old" & recorded to be a “field laborer.” Later, he was sold to the Andry Plantation of Col. Manuel Andre & forcibly worked as an overseer to 86 enslaved Afrikans.
Eventually, he organized enslaved Afrikans & maroons ahead of the legendary German Coast Uprising in what is now St. John the Baptist Parish, part of the German Coast off the Mississippi River.
On Jan 8th, 1811 Deslondes & 14 others attacked their slave "master" Andry Sr. (of the Andry Plantation in St. John's Parish) & killed his son. While Andry Sr. escaped, Deslondes & allies swept the plantation & fled into the Louisiana Territory. By January 10th their numbers swelled to 400-500. They successfully killed yet another slave "master", sending Whites from the area fleeing into New Orleans.
The governor of the Louisiana Territory assembled a militia of volunteers + 700 U.S. Army Troops & Navy Sailors to end to the rebellion after receiving intel on Deslondes' next move by the foolish few who betrayed Deslondes & Co in exchange for their own freedom.
Tumblr media
"His hands were chopped off upon his capture; he was shot in both thighs and bullets were riddled throughout his body. Before he passed, his body was shoved into a bundle of straw and he was roasted alive as a warning to other rebels and "free" folks. [Later, he was decapitated & joined the heads of other rebels that were put upon spikes posted along major roadways throughout New Orleans.]  - as described by the U.S. Navy.
We remember Deslondes for his unprecedented leadership & bravery that spearheaded the first & bloodiest rebellion on U.S. soil of his time. We remember him for his cleverness, courage, & heroism that inspired so many others to liberate themselves rather than beg for something that cannot be given by man. We remember him for his immeasurable suffering & for giving the ultimate sacrifice for the love of us.
We pour libations & give him his 💐 today. Offering suggestions: light a white candle, libations of water, & Haitian cuisine.
‼️Note: offering suggestions are just that & strictly for veneration purposes only. Never attempt to conjure up any spirit or entity without proper divination/Mediumship counsel.‼️

If I may vent a little...
Now that we are upon the 10th anniversary of the end of Pokémon's fifth generation and the dawning of its sixth, which also means the end of the Best Wishes anime series and start of the XY anime series, I have thoughts and feelings I wish to express. I still love Best Wishes for what it is, and respect XY for what it is, and will forever tout that both of them were crucial stepping stones in the anime producers' learning curve toward the greatness of the Tomiyasu era we're enjoying today (well, we who have good taste in Pokémon cartoon shows, anyway).
........With that said. Thinking about what they could have been really pisses me off.
As I've covered before, Best Wishes was planned as a Black/White-based series where every major running plot thread would ultimately converge in the third year and result in a games-inspired finale at the Unova League. Ash's quest to collect badges from the Gym Leaders, Iris' character arc and the Village of Dragons, Cilan's position as a Pokémon Connoisseur who evaluates how trainers have brought up their Pokémon, Team Rocket's covert military operation to conquer Unova, the legend of Reshiram and Zekrom / the Heroes of Truth and Ideal, and of course Team Plasma....all of that was to form a greater whole, and it would have been revolutionary for the anime. Unfortunately, Game Freak decided they were in the mood for doing something revolutionary themselves: making full-on sequels Black 2/White 2 rather than the expected Gray edition. This single-handedly destroyed the writers' big plan for the anime series, meaning the plot threads would remain mostly segregated.
And as much of a shame as this is, it couldn't be helped. What absolutely could have been helped, though, was how the third year unfolded even with the separate plot threads. @ultraericthered nailed it in this post - we could have had a Unova League that, while not entirely satisfying, is a step above the mess we ended up getting; we could have had Iris' arc come back in more meaningful ways than just some random filler arc episode with Clair and a post-series special episode tying into it; and we absolutely could have had the Myth Arc hodgepodge of BW/B2W2 material fleshed out into something that was truly great and that lasted the duration of the year. I love Episode N in a bottle, but when I step back and look at it in relation to the greater whole it aggravates me so much. The third year of Best Wishes that we ended up with aggravates me so much! Because there was no good reason for it to be as mediocre as it is; it only happened because Junichi Masuda started on the whole "worldwide release for new gen games on this specific date" trend that the franchise has suffered from ever since. And as a result, we get the year / season (called "Adventures in Unova - and Beyond!" in the international dub) that does little but provide all the valid justification that Best Wishes haters in the online fandom ever needed to justify their hate.
Speaking of which, both the fuckery that Best Wishes' production went through and the online fan hatred for it helped shape the following XY series into being the way it was: the darling of the online fan community but the bane of the Japanese target demographic...and thus the producers due to the free-falling ratings. And I can't help but imagine: what if things went differently? What if we had a series where Ash wasn't hamfistedly turned into the power fantasy his rabid online standom wanted him to be, if Serena wasn't in love with him and like her Pokémon Adventures manga counterpart pursued Sky Battles as her goal rather than Showcases (which makes infinitely more sense given that it's rebelling against her mother pushing Rhyhorn Racing on her and helps make her far less of a retread of May and Dawn), if the early kinks in Clemont and Bonnie's characters were ironed out and their father being a masked superhero made to actually matter, if Team Rocket's zanyness was reigned in and they were allowed to have more carryovers from Best Wishes while still keeping their humorous qualities, and above all: if Alain and Mairin's journey wasn't confined to four occasional side-specials but was the subject of entire episodes? Yes, what if the show had Alain as a dual protagonist and actually rotated his and Ash's stories on a regular basis, which would create less filler and build even more hype for when they cross paths? That would have been absolutely amazing, and set a natural precedent for Ash not being as much "the lead" as he used to be that gets followed up in Sun & Moon where he's part of a large ensemble and Journeys where he and Goh are co-leads side by side. The third year where everything comes together, XY&Z, would have been made even stronger this way and made the series as a whole even more cohesive. I honestly wouldn't dare argue the XY series was overrated if that was the XY series we got! I'd be right there in the chorus singing its praises!
But alas, we got a series where Ash was hamfistedly turned into the power fantasy his rabid online standom wanted him to be, where Serena was in love with him and she pursued Showcases as her goal because the writers wanted to do the May/Dawn formula again except far more gendered this time, where Clemont and Bonnie suffered early kinks in their characters and their father being a masked superhero was absolutely pointless, where Team Rocket suffered a drop in relevancy and competence while behaving crazy to an irritating degree, and where Alain and Mairin only got the four occasional side-specials prior to their involvement in XY&Z which helped make the preceding two years a pandering, formulaic and largely aimless slog. As such, it ended up as just another stepping stone to greatness rather than something great in of itself; forever stuck in the shadow of what it could have been.
Well, I've vented. Now to loop back around to end things on a positive note.

What's sparked the rebellion? Was it Katniss' volunteering for Prim, Rue’s death, the berries, or was it before all of that?
How does many THG victors joined or being recruited for the rebellion?
Thoughts?
Thank you 😊
@curiousnonny
What's sparked the rebellion? Was it Katniss' volunteering for Prim, Rue’s death, the berries, or was it before all of that?
i'd reject the notion that there's "the rebellion". if we talk about the capitol group around plutarch (and tigris and cressida and caesar) then we inevitably are talking about people who
"[...] have been, for several years, part of an undercover group aiming to overthrow the Capitol" (CF)
but that means little to bonnie and twill, where their home district has only been plotting since the 74th games, so roughly six months at best:
Ever since the Hunger Games, the discontent in District 8 had been growing. It was always there, of course, to some degree. But what differed was that talk was no longer sufficient, and the idea of taking action went from a wish to a reality. The textile factories that service Panem are loud with machinery, and the din also allowed word to pass safely, a pair of lips close to an ear, words unnoticed, unchecked. (CF)
in mockingjay, haymitch asks during what moment katniss alone had touched the rebels. many come up with different opinions, and while i'd argue it's the accumulation, the total sum of them all, that made katniss the mockingjay, personal rebellion, the want to revolt, can start at many different times:
"[...] So, let's all be quiet for a minute. I want everyone to think of one incident where Katniss Everdeen genuinely moved you. Not where you were jealous of her hairstyle, or her dress went up in flames or she made a halfway decent shot with an arrow. Not where Peeta was making you like her. I want to hear one moment where she made you feel something real." (MJ)
The moments begin to come thick and fast and in no particular order. When I took Rue on as an ally. Extended my hand to Chaff on interview night. Tried to carry Mags. And again and again when I held out those berries that meant different things to different people. Love for Peeta. Refusal to give in under impossible odds. Defiance of the Capitol's inhumanity. (MJ)
so i'd say there's many different moments for the 74th in particular, and for rebellion in general.
but i'd like to return to the captiol rebellion, because that's my small litte niche interest, and i'd like to point to several things here:
SC: Propaganda decides the outcome of the war. This is why Plutarch implements the airtime assault; he understands that whoever controls the airwaves controls the power. Like Snow, he’s been waiting for Katniss, because he needs a Spartacus to lead his campaign. There have been possible candidates, like Finnick, but no one else has captured the imagination of the country like she has. (Collins interview, 10th anniversary)
“Not just against the other tributes, but the Capitol, too,” I say. “You know they didn't expect that to happen. It wasn't meant to be part of the arena. They never planned on anyone using it as a weapon. It made them look stupid that he figured it out. I bet they had a good time trying to spin that one. Bet that's why I don't remember seeing it on television. It's almost as bad as us and the berries!” I can't help laughing, really laughing, for the first time in months. Peeta just shakes his head like I've lost my mind—and maybe I have, a little. “Almost, but not quite,” says Haymitch from behind us. I whip around, afraid he's going to be angry over us watching his tape, but he just smirks and takes a swig from a bottle of wine. So much for sobriety. I guess I should be upset he's drinking again, but I'm preoccupied with another feeling. (CF)
those statements have made me develop a theory, namely that plutarch gained inspiration from haymitch's games and the first bread crumbs of a rebellion began right then and there. haymitch's backstory is given a whole chapter in catching fire, and it feels a rather purposeful decision to give so much time to the second quarter quell. outside of the obvious "haymitch's end is shown as a warning to the younger generation and serves as a warning to katniss and peeta, too" i feel like the connection with the rebellion nonetheless exists: the forcefield. using the forcefield against the capitol happens in both, an it was enough to make me think:
what if plutarch gained inspiration from the second quarter quell, and in turn haymitch's games, and began to think on a rebellion through using the arena to his advantage? he is young enough for it to aid in his ambition to become head gamemaker--a strong enough person who can manipulate and aid from the outside.
katniss and haymitch are mirrors of the other, so why not a mirror in this regard, too? after all, we know that plutarch has been waiting for a mockingjay for at least ten years--since finnick's games, as SC mentioned him--so his initial inspiration lies before that. there's no other relevant event mentioned other than the second quarter quell.
How does many THG victors joined or being recruited for the rebellion?
this, again, is my personal headcanon.
other than haymitch, the other person of note we know existed back then was caesar flickerman. he's seen interviewing haymitch. i headcanon caesar to have been in his first years of his career, and having went from excited to reserved; he's noticed there's something off, that the capitol has been manipulating their perception on the games, and he's grown to resent what they present. with a closer touch to the tributes, plutarch decides on the brave step of recruiting caesar to the cause--not without some hiccups.
together, they are the mind (plutarch) and the heart (caesar) of the rebellion. plutarch does the planning, recruits the spies, finds opportunities to exploit the system where he can. caesar recruits the victors; he's always been close to them, always been kind (katniss herself observes that about caesar). caesar is the best person to ask for propaganda on both sides; he can let tributes rise and fall, he can determine who receives attention an who does not. he can use the interviews to the advantage of the rebellion.
out of all people within the capitol, katniss is in contact with people who are directly responsible to her district. her prep team. cinna. portia. effie. outside of those, she only really is in contact with caesar. and caesar, in contrast to the other ones, knows every tribute, every victor.
if you are planning a rebellion through the arena, you'd ideally want someone on your side who can read the tributes and their potential, and who would be close enough to recruit them without making it seem suspicious.
caesar is the only one who fits that bill, and he's the best person to recruit the victors.

Remembering #JuthikaRoy on her 10th death anniversary (05/02/14), the iconic bhajan vocalist celebrated as the modern-day #Meera during the pre-independence era. Renowned for her soul-stirring Meerabai bhajans such as "Ghunghat ke pat khol" and "Pag Ghunghru Baandh Meera Naachi Re," Juthika Roy carved a niche for herself in the hearts of many.
Her melodious renditions won the hearts of Hindi and Bengali cinema audiences alike, making her a celebrated figure in her time. Her voice captivated notable personalities, including Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, who were avid admirers of her work.
On the historic day of August 15, 1947, as Nehru journeyed from Teen Murti Bhavan to the Red Fort to mark India's independence, Roy's bhajans filled the air, broadcast live by All India Radio. After her performance, at Nehru's request, she continued to sing until the national flag was hoisted, adding a memorable soundtrack to a pivotal moment in India's history.
In her reflections, Roy shared an anecdote about Sarojini Naidu revealing how Gandhi found solace in her bhajans during his incarceration in Pune, making her music an integral part of his daily prayer meetings. She even had the honor of performing privately for Gandhi at his residence.
Embarking on her musical journey at just 12 years old with her first album, Roy was mentored by the renowned rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Her collaborations with the esteemed Bengali music director Kamal Dasgupta, especially the revered Narayan stuti "Narayan Shriman Narayan," continue to resonate with listeners.
Roy's versatile talent extended beyond Hindi and Bengali, as she lent her voice to songs in various languages, including Urdu and Tamil.
On February 5, 2014, the music world lost this luminary in Kolkata after a long illness. As we commemorate her legacy, we hope for her soul to find everlasting peace.
